With just three weeks until the trade deadline, here are three things we’ll be keeping an eye on around the baseball world throughout the day today:
1. Phillies getting healthy:
The Phillies are expecting to welcome slugger Kyle Schwarber back from the injured list today, and he might be joined by veteran superstar Bryce Harper. The duo were both placed on the injured list late last month due to a groin strain and hamstring strain, respectively, though both issues were described as very mild. Per reporting over the weekend, Schwarber has been running at 100% intensity for several days now while Harper had been running “either at or close to 100% intensity.”
The return of Schwarber and potentially Harper figures to transform a Phillies lineup that has dealt with not only those losses but also the loss of catcher J.T. Realmuto in recent weeks. Schwarber has enjoyed a strong season that’s become typical of him during his time with the Phillies, slashing .250/.373/.447 with 17 home runs in 367 trips to the plate this year. Harper has been even better at the plate, turning in a massive .303/.399/.582 line with 20 homers in 336 plate appearances.
2. Red Sox 40-man move incoming?
The Red Sox optioned left-hander Cam Booser to Triple-A following last night’s game, per a team announcement. Chris Cotillo of MassLive reported last night that Booser’s departure is likely to lead to the Red Sox selecting the contract of right-hander Trey Wingenter today. Wingenter, 30, was acquired by the Red Sox in trade with the Tigers over the weekend in exchange for minor league reliever CJ Weins.
Wingenter, who’s pitched in parts of three big league seasons, has struggled to a 5.28 ERA in the majors despite a much stronger 3.82 FIP. He’s posted strong strikeout numbers but also an elevated walk rate. The deal was reportedly prompted by Wingenter triggering an assignment clause in his minor league contract, meaning the Red Sox would have to add the righty to their 40-man roster shortly after the trade. That’s now expected to happen today, and the Sox will need to clear a 40-man spot for Wingenter.
3. MLBTR Chat Today:
We’re now just three weeks from the July 30 trade deadline, and the earliest trades of the summer are now starting to take place, with Aaron Civale, Austin Slater, and Alex Young now having changed uniforms. If you have any questions about the upcoming deadline or your team’s direction with the All-Star break just over the horizon, MLBTR’s Steve Adams will host a chat with readers at 1pm CT. You can click here to ask a question in advance, and that same link will allow you to join in on the chat once it begins or read the transcript after it is completed.

My sources are telling me Crochet and Robert will be Dodgers soon. Dodgers will trade 3 or 4 good prospects.

He’s waiting for a reason.

Yes. Discrimination.

Phillies getting healthy just in time for the playoff push. Magic number is down to 69 for the Phillies to take the NL best record with 72 games left to play.

@Chooch Ruiz
I could see the Phillies going on a 69-game win streak.

Nicely done, @Chooch!

This article was written on 7-9 and it says the Red Sox will make this move after the game last night: they didn’t play last night. They need to DFA the guys that gave up 3 homers to Ben Rice and 14 hits and runs to a wankee team that only scored 3 in the other 2 games combined. A pitching machine would be harder to hit. The Sox hitters also couldn’t get a hit off Tim Hill in 2.2 innings and he was DFAd from the White Sox. Seriously?
letitbelowenstein
Hitting hasn’t exactly been Boston’s strong point this season. A Sox team that ranks as low as they do in homers, batting average and runs scored is an embarrassment. I know Casas and Story have been out, but they shouldn’t be relying on guys like Valdez, Hamilton (who I like a lot) or Refsnyder to carry the load. They seriously need to get cracking during the off-season and bring in some boppers.
whyhayzee
There’s a name for teams that lose 1/3 of their games by a lot and win 2/3 of their games by a little.
Champions.
ellisburks
they are 7th in runs but they are 4th in avg(almost irrelevant) OBP and 5th SLG and above average OPS+ and 2nd in SB. Their offence is fine.
Poolhalljunkies
Where are you getting your stats and what team are you watching? The red sox are currently tied for 10th most home runs by team in all of mlb…thats not low at all..some would consider 10th out of 30 high…maybe check the actual stats first as hitting and pitching have not really been a major issue..its thier lackluster infield defense that causes them to lose most of the time
whyhayzee
Well, defense has been subpar. And probably has been costly as well. But I think it can improve somewhat as they get a little more consistency in their lineup regarding positions. I feel like getting everyone healthy and hitting will help that. Not because Casas is any great shakes but he’s better than Smith, I think. Getting Abreu back helps the outfield.

You are annoying as heck.

Happy to get Swarb & Harper back, now someone needs to find out why Ranger is suddenly very hittable.
RunDMC
Or maybe he’s just normalizing. Is it a coincidence that he’s going less IP as its gets deeper into summer where its warmer and the teams that he’s worst against (last 2 starts: ATL, MIA, respectively) are most familiar with him? I get the personal side of his situation, very little chance he was going to maintain that start. That being said, only 2 starts where OBA is over-.200 with that offense means he’s still in for a lot more wins even if he’s not as good as the first 2 months.
Bart Harley Jarvis
Sometimes a bad outing or two is just a bad outing or two.
Look at Fried’s start vs the Phillies this past Friday. The thought of his big payday with the Dodgers must be weighing heavily on his mind, but he’ll most likely bounce back in his next start.

Piss poor job of trolling

A major league team should sign Bauer. With so many players signing creative contracts with opt outs and deferrals, Bauer’s contract should stipulate that if he becomes a problem in the clubhouse or if the fans show absolute and utter hatred for him, his contract will be cancelled.
Scott Kliesen
I’m sure MLBPA will waive their bargained for right of guaranteed contract willingly for this dbag.
acell10
or maybe instead of attaching all those caveats a major league team should not sign bauer?
Bart Harley Jarvis
He’s tired. His family finally arrived from Venezuela, so he’s on the hook for household duties he never had to previously handle.
Bart Harley Jarvis
Beautiful family, though.

Is Trevor getting bored yet with all that waiting?
mlbtrcommenter01
Do the Trevor Bauer simps wake up everyday and think “how can I get him signed, this is an injustice!” The trolling is turning into cringe over the undying loyalty to a man that’s never going to play professional baseball ever again.
Liberalsteve
Well, got news for you. He has played pro ball the last 3 years.

If a Pitcher throws a pitch and no one sees it, did he really throw it?

All they have to do is announce the accuser being indicted for felony fraud and extortion and we’ll call off the dogs. Simple as that.
riffraff
padreswschamps2024 – Thank you…its been a rough day and I truly needed to laugh like I just did. We’ll call off the dogs?..exactly what dogs are you calling off? You’re not shutting down anything..not shouting down some GM giving a Q&A somewhere..not changing the world. At best you mildly annoy strangers on the internet who can simply mute you.
Again..thanks for the laugh and good luck with the Pads
PadresWSChamps2025
Part of being a man is being able to admit when you were wrong. They posted an article when Bauer was accused by the fourth woman, effectively bringing more eyeballs to her accusations knowing full well that people would automatically assume he was guilty. If it is their responsibility to do that, then it is equally their responsibility to bring more eyeballs to the exonerations.

Transform the Phillies lineup? Schwarber and Harper missed like 9 0r 10 games. Not like they have been out long… Restore, more so than transform.
Johnny Devil
Players don’t want him in their locker room. Owners don’t want him on their teams. Society has lots of different names for it. In baseball terms they are saying ” Yer outta here “!!!.

looks like waiting for trevors posts have been removed. not that I’m complaining mind you.
