As Shohei Ohtani celebrates his 30th birthday today, let’s look at three headlines from around baseball heading into weekend action…
1. NL’s best square off this weekend
Possible playoff previews abound as the National League’s three division leaders and top wild card team are paired off in three-game series beginning today. The league-leading Phillies head to Atlanta to kick off a three-game set with the Braves, beginning with a fun Aaron Nola vs. Max Fried pitching matchup in tonight’s game. Philadelphia enjoys a healthy nine-game lead over Atlanta in the NL East race, though the Braves have won two of the three games between the two division rivals already this season, and 10 remaining head-to-head meetings gives the Braves some opportunity to directly chip away. Atlanta could be fortunate to be catching the Phils when Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber are both out of action, though the Phillies are 4-2 since their two sluggers were placed on the 10-day injured list.
In a battle of division leaders, the NL Central-leading Brewers head to Los Angeles to face the NL West-leading Dodgers. The newly-acquired Aaron Civale will make his Milwaukee debut in tonight’s start, taking the hill against a former Rays teammate in Tyler Glasnow. Among the storylines to watch in the series is the status of Jason Heyward, who will undergo an MRI today on his left knee after suffering an injury in yesterday’s game with the Diamondbacks. Manager Dave Roberts told reporters (including Jack Harris of the L.A. Times) said Heyward was hurt while jumping to try and snag Joc Pederson’s first-inning home run, and Heyward was pulled from the game prior to the start of the third.
2. Red Sox vs. Yankees
One of baseball’s signature rivalries is renewed in the Bronx this weekend as the Red Sox and Yankees open up a three-game series with both teams in a playoff position. New York is the AL’s top wild card team, while Boston has taken a half-game edge over the Royals for the third and final wild card slot. The two clubs last met in a three-game series on June 14-16 that now seems like a bit of a turning point for both sides.
After an 8-1 loss to New York on June 14, the Red Sox won the next two games to capture the series. That started the run of 12 wins in 16 games that has now firmly put the Sox back into the postseason hunt. Meanwhile, the Yankees have gone in the opposite direction, with a dismal 4-13 record in their last 17 games.
3. Shane Baz returns after two-year layoff
Shane Baz is expected to start for the Rays against the World Series champion Rangers tonight, marking the end of the right-hander’s long injury rehab. It was almost exactly two years ago (on July 10, 2022) that Baz made his last MLB appearance, as Tommy John surgery derailed his career and then his already-lengthy comeback trail was extended by an oblique strain this past spring. Formerly one of baseball’s top prospects, Baz posted a 4.02 ERA over 40 1/3 big league innings in 2021-22, showing just some glimpses of his potential. Nobody expects Baz to be a frontline arm right away, yet becoming a solid rotation piece and simply getting some Major League innings under his belt would be a nice result for the 25-year-old and his team.
A recent hot streak has got the Rays back over the .500 mark at 44-43, and they sit 3.5 games back of the Red Sox for the last wild card spot (with the Royals and Astros in between). Tampa Bay will be one of the more interesting teams to watch as the trade deadline approaches, as the Civale deal is an early sign that the club will be looking to both buy and sell in its constant attempt to both manage a tight payroll and build a contending roster.
Old York
1. Good to see some actual competitive games to watch this weekend. It was getting boring watching an uncompetitive Yankees squad get destroyed by the Reds.
2. I see the Yankees have started their second half collapse a bit early this year.
3. They’re not playing like the world series champions, though. Baz should be able to get through at least 3 or 4 innings without much problem.
GaryWarriorsRedSoxx
I look forward to the weekend series. Whichever way it goes someone will be happy lol. Hope it’s not too painful for the other guy. No one wants to be on the wrong end of a sweep.
Fever Pitch Guy
York – I’m certainly not going to defend the Yankees, but kinda silly to imply the Yankees typically collapse in the second half when they’ve made the playoffs 6 out of the last 7 years don’t ya think?
Old York
Fever Pitch Guy
I’m making fun of the past few years. Yes, they’ve generally done well in the second half but they’ve had some rough 2nd halves in the past 2 years. But over a longer period of time, yes their record is 275-209.
2023 second half record: 33 – 37
2022 second half record: 35 – 33
2021 second half record: 46 – 27
2020 second half record: 32 – 27
2019 second half record: 45 – 28
2018 second half record: 38 – 28
2017 second half record: 46 – 29

its_happening
Makes sense the Yanks had two bad second half performances given than 2022 they were playing way over their head, and both years saw some significant injuries. On top of that, AL East is generally the strongest division in baseball. 2022 they played more AL East teams with the unbalanced schedule.
I’m not ready to call this year a three peat for the Yankees.
Old York
@its_happening
In all honestly and seriousness, I don’t think they’ll completely collapse but it’s strange how just at the end of June and the switch to July, they’ve just struggled in every department.
Fever Pitch Guy
York – You know there’s 162 games in the regular season, right?
Here’s a link that is better: baseball-reference.com/teams/NYY/2022-schedule-sco…

So other than last season, they haven’t had a losing second half record during the 7-year span.
But hey, why bother with facts …. right?
Old York
@Fever Pitch Guy
You do know that in baseball, we mostly talk about 1st and second half as in before and after the AS game, correct?
But I’m not sure why you are making such claims when I literally provided the data to you already.
Fever Pitch Guy
York – The casuals do, not the true baseball fans.
Because believe it or not, the All-Star break isn’t on the same day every year. So you can’t do a year-to-year comparison of anything.
And also believe it or not, all teams don’t have identical games played on any given date. So you can’t do a team-to-team comparison of anything.
I’m not making claims, these are actual first half and second half records.
Old York
@Fever Pitch Guy
Which baseball league do you follow? I understand that but for decades, we’ve always talk about first half and second half before and after the AS game. And yes, it is on different days but so is the start and end of the season. Ultimately, it doesn’t matter. If the team had a poor second half, they collapsed from what they were in the first half.. That’s the basics of what I’m presenting to you.
Fever Pitch Guy
York – There’s really no reason to continue because your opinion of collapse is apparently different than mine.
For instance I believe being just one game over .500 in the 2nd half of 2022 is not a collapse. But like you said, if you want to compare it to being 35 games over .500 in the first half then I respect that decision … even though an equivalent 2nd half would have given them a 116-46 record which is realistically unsustainable unless they’re the 2001 Mariners. LOL
So agree to disagree.
Old York
@Fever Pitch Guy
Okay…
octavian8
With the Yanks payroll being what it is it’s kinda silly they don’t make the playoffs all 7 years and no world championships don’t ya think?
Fever Pitch Guy
octavian – You think big payrolls guarantee world championships?
All I can say about that is ….. HAHAHAHAHA!!
octavian8
I didn’t say big payrolls guarantee world championships. It takes wise use of those funds and good management also. A large wallet goes a long way.
Fever Pitch Guy
octavian – I totally agree with you there.
Brew’88
@Fever. Well, a big payroll doesn’t guarantee winning a WS but it sure helps! 15 of the past 16 WS were won by teams in the top 8 in MLB payroll those seasons.
Fever Pitch Guy
Brew – Absolutely! It’s like playing Monopoly and starting out with more money than most other players. Or it’s like spending twice as much on lottery tickets. There’s an obvious advantage in all three situations.
Very Barry
Have the Yankees now digressed to the point where folks are claiming playoff appearances as accomplishments????
I thought the point of being the “New York Yankees”, and spending ridiculous amounts of money on premium free agents, was to win championships.
Old York
@Very Barry
When your team hasn’t won in such a long time and they were used to winning often in the 90s and early 2000s, the fans will take whatever as a win now.
Fever Pitch Guy
Barry – Actually the discussion was their second half record over the past 7 seasons.
I have no idea why Octavian brought up payroll, postseason or championships.
KyleT
FPG sure is working hard defending the Yankees. Its almost as if he’s a fan of that team, and not some other team.
jmi1950
FPG is a TROLL.
IGNORE him.

Old York: I never get tired of seeing the Reds or anyone else destroy the Yankees.
Blue Baron
Old York: It’s not early. They’ve played 89 games, so they’re well into the second half.
Old York
@Blue Baron
True, but I’m thinking more of like first half before the AS break and second half after it. Sure, we can split it by actual # of games and half that
Blue Baron
The All-Star break always comes 2-3 weeks into the second half. I don’t know why it’s considered the midpoint. Perhaps it was at one time.
But the implosion of the death star is always a pleasure to watch whenever it comes, lol.
Fever Pitch Guy
Blue – You are correct, the regular season used to start 2nd or 3rd week of April.
Saint Nick
Calling the Braves an “NL Power” is kinda funny.
Sid Bream Speed Demon
Six straight division titles and currently a dominant lead for the first WC spot is funny?
Blackpink in the area
Dominant lead? They are 2.5 games ahead of the Cardinals who currently are in the last wild card spot.
Saint Nick
Barely clinging to a WC spot, 28-31 in their last 59 games, and a whopping 0 wins since April 17th when their opponents score 4+ runs. Yeah…doesn’t scream NL Power to me. The NL is the Dodgers & Phillies and everybody else is just kind of mid.
letitbelowenstein
Sadly, fans in at least 20 other cities would love to have the Braves.
Old York
@whyhayzee
And yet, you still tuned in to watch.
whyhayzee
Listened to the first 20 minutes driving home, that’s all. Unwatchable.
olmtiant
While the Yankees just got swept and the SOX just swept ,this weekend series is still as they say in horse racing “a huge step up in class”
Old York
@olmtiant
They were playing the Fish. Everyone sweeps the fish. Even Pittsburg and Washington (twice) have swept the fish.
olmtiant
York.. exactly the Sox just won a 5000 claiming race and now are in the Belmont stakes…
Fever Pitch Guy
olm – Why have you never mentioned horse racing before? I’ve been into it for most of my life!
So is this weekend’s series being moved to Saratoga because of renovations on Yankee Stadium?
olmtiant
FPG… oh dear GOD… before my plates became reddsox 1 they were Derby 73!! Went to derby 88-99 and a couple of breeders cups at Churchill.. brother and other fellas have gone from 70’s on missing zero!! If you are on who wants to be a millionaire and question is on Secretariat I’m your guy!!! ( or on Brais) 4 pics of Big Red ( two signed) by Ronnie. When he was at Derby museum signing his book years ago!! In foyer of Residence with cement lawn jockey with Silks of Big Red custom painted.. I had money before marriage..LOL
olmtiant
FPG.. trainer?? Handicap expert??? Hot walker?? Or like me a broken down horse player!! The theme of my and Mrs Brais wedding was horse racing .. tables were named for famous thoroughbreds… Mrs said poor guy just opened a huge can of worms now talking horses with you…
Fever Pitch Guy
olm – Very cool !! If you ever wonder what a Giacomo is, I’m your guy …. he’s the horse that got me deep into racing.
But my proudest moment was the 2022 Derby. I think I told you this before, my favorite number is 21 because of Rocketman and my favorite underdog is Sandy Leon. Yep Exacta and Trifecta, I won’t say how much in case there’s any IRS folks here. LOL!
Fever Pitch Guy
olm – Nothing in an official capacity, although I’ve met Baffert a couple times at Pegasus. I’m just someone who knows some people, that sorta thing. One time years ago I was sitting in the The Big O watching Pedro pitch against his former team and this guy next to me who I would meet a few times later at Woodbine (yeah I’m international) really wanted me to be a runner for him. Even though he didn’t need an interpreter, I declined the very generous offer.
And yes I’ve been to Churchill but never for the Derby, hopefully someday! BTW did you ever meet Julie Krone? Very, very nice woman.
olmtiant
FPG… awesome.. man you’re won more on giacamo than I did on all derby’s combined!! Have gotten pictures with Pat Day/ Mike Smith/ Chris McCarhon/ and my favorite Jerry Bailey!! Day before derby races on Friday jockeys would stop on way to paddock For pictures if asked nicely… hilarious as I’m the size of three of them lol!! Never met Julie.. first woman to win triple crown race( Belmont) only one still I believe… and Woodbine is answer to last track Big Red ran on!!!

Blue Baron

Fever Pitch Guy
York – This weekend’s series in Miami will be EPIC!!
ChiSox vs Marlins – Must see TV!!
avenger65
National Media Bias Update: Counting today, 89 games in for both clubs, the Yankees have been on national TV 47 times. The Dodgers have been on 49 times. That’s over 40% for each. Most of those have been on MLB Network because they broadcast more games than any other station. And, in their defense, they show every team, even a White Sox/Rockies game, just not anywhere close to the LAD and nyy.
ChuckyNJ
You weren’t paying attention last weekend. AL East leader Baltimore hosted World Series winner Texas, yet Fox sent the Dodgers game to Philadelphia and all of Florida. The O’s and Rangers did get the ESPN Sunday-night slot.
Fox is more generous this weekend as Philly-Atlanta goes to all of the East Coast and Deep South. [With ESPN obviously taking Yankees and Red Sox.]
Fever Pitch Guy
avenger – I’m pretty sure it’s because they’ve got the 4 best hitters in the game.
Prospectnvstr
Actually CLEVELAND has the BEST HITTER in the American League. His name is Steven Kwan. I’m a Braves & Pirates fan & even I know this.
Fever Pitch Guy
Prospect – Yes I’m sure there’s 20 different stats that “prove” there’s 20 different best hitters in the league. Kwan is obviously having a great season, but he will need to hit for more power and produce for longer than 3 months before he replaces the guy who leads the majors in OPS and set the league HR record just 2 years ago.
avenger65
Fever Pitch: I’m pretty sure it’s because the national Media thinks we all want to see the Yankees and Dodgers. I’m sure the suits were soiling themselves when last year’s World Series didn’t include either one.
Prospectnvstr
He’s been “PROVING IT” pretty much since he’s been called up a few yrs ago. I know that there’s a lot of people who say that “BA doesn’t mean anything” & that “BA is overrated”. Give me the player who has a high BA, who is also ABOVE AVERAGE when it comes to XBH and situational hitting + EXCELLENT DEFENSE over the lower average, power hitter who is OK or even a little above average defensively.
Prospectnvstr
Just for the record I’m more or less responding to the comment of “the best 4 hitters in the game”. If you’re meaning HR’s only or “power hitters” only, then I agree that Kwan doesn’t fit. However, when you use the term hitter it’s a different conversation. If my “dream team” is down by 1 run with 2 outs in the 9th & the bases loaded I’d choose either Kwan or Freddie Freeman to be my last batter over Judge, Ohtani or anyone else.
whyhayzee
I’d choose Yoshida.
Fever Pitch Guy
Prospect – I know it’s purely subjective, but if you’re now saying who is the best clutch hitter in the game it’s DEFINITELY not Kwan. He ranks only 56th in OPS with RISP while Soto is 2nd and Judge is 5th.
Even if you take away power and walks altogether, Soto leads MLB with a .406 BA when there’s RISP and Kwan is only 47th with a .304 BA.
So no, Kwan is NOT who I would want at the plate in the situation you described. And as we said Kwan sucked before this year, batting just .268 with a .710 OPS last year. It’s highly unlikely he will sustain his performance thus far this season. Sorry, just telling it like it is.
Blue Baron
avenger65: I don’t believe anyone is being forced against their will to watch these games.
avenger65
Blue Baron: The point is, not every state or region has a major league team or shows all of their teams games on TV. If someone wants to watch a game from a certain region, like the West, there are 7 other teams the networks can show besides the Dodgers. In the East, there are 8 other than the Yankees. With the exception of MLBN, which shows every team but still overloads on the LAD and nyy, there are other games TBS, Fox, ESPN, etc. can show. I would guess that those two teams are not the number one choice for everyone in the country.
Blue Baron
avenger65: There certainly are other games they could show, and they would if it were profitable enough.
However, these networks are private companies that are about the business of maximizing profit, so they choose the games that draw the most eyeballs and help them accomplish that.
They’re not public entities or utilities charged with doing what is fair or equitable for all players in the market.
Complaining about it won’t change that reality.
JoeBrady
I’m not sure what the point is. When I was growing up, my Raiders were on TV every other week. Now they are not, because of about 20 years of ineptitude.
olmtiant
Well said JB… Hence why a kid in suburban Chicago grew up a Dallas Cowboys/ Boston Red Sox fan in the late 70’s early 80’s and still is… That and all the concussions I had from Skeetching on bumpers of car in the winter…
The Saber-toothed Superfife
Someone should be on the phone RIGHT NOW, stiring up a bidding war between the Yankees and Red Sox….
Or is this all talk about the new Wild Card set up and teams wanting to be in it……just all talk.
Fever Pitch Guy
Most of Red Sox Nation isn’t buying into the 12-4 streak just yet.
9 of the 12 wins were against teams that have losing records, and 2 of the other 3 wins were against a team that’s currently struggling badly. It’s the exact same pattern as prior years, and we all know how they ended.
Until the Red Sox improve on their 18-28 record against winning teams, Red Sox Nation will not view them as true playoff contenders. We will know more after we see how the Sox perform this month with 15 games against the Yankees, Royals, Dodgers and Mariners.
olmtiant
Fever… start a go fund me for away games… I would love opportunity to expand on my 2-0 record!!!
Fever Pitch Guy
olm – How about you attend the 10 games in New York? Plenty of free hotel rooms there ;O)
all in the suit that you wear
Currently, only 7 teams in MLB have a winning record against teams >.500. The DBacks and Rangers both had losing records against teams >.500 last year and went to the World Series. I don’t take that stat too seriously.
Longinus
They’re clear playoff contenders, but only because MLB has lowered the bar for meeting that designation (sigh). In terms of being pennant contenders in the way that we traditionally view that…nah, and I don’t see that changing this year barring major additions. The roster just has too many soft spots, further aggravated by too many injuries.
Definitely it would be nice (from a Boston fan perspective) for the team to make the playoffs no matter their level of underlying quality, but what has mattered much more (even before the recent stretch) is that this year’s team was presenting some foundational pieces for the hoped-for (and soon?) eventual return to true contention. Last year’s team felt like spinning wheels, and that sort of limbo mediocrity is painful because of the lack of direction.
Fever Pitch Guy
Long – Well said!
I think decisions they make at the trade deadline and offseason will determine their future. They will have some really big decisions to make as injured players return and top prospects get promoted.
Remember, they tried hard to trade Duran prior to the season. If they had succeeded, they’d probably be at least 7 games worse than they are now.
Will the pitchers continue to decline?
Will they trade Pivetta, O’Neill, Jansen and Martin at the deadline?
Will Casas return and be able to swing like he used to?
As they say, stay tuned!

The Braves aren’t hitting at all. I don’t have a lot of confidence in them this weekend.

1) trolling noted
2) good point you lucked into – ERA never shows anything

Yankees will be lucky to have a .500 second half. The talent just there. There are plenty of reasons for it, but they need a different approach, in the clubhouse, and in the front office. Older, poor-performing players, younger players that don’t reach their potential–it maybe they do–and a bloated payroll that requires them to give away useful if not stellar talent just to bring in someone who is older, more likely to be injured, and on the back side of their career.
Yankee Clipper
I agree. As I’ve said for years, this team won’t win with Aaron Boone at the helm. Boone is not a manager that can take the team to the next level. It’s not his fault, it’s just not him. He’s more concerned with individual success than team success (if not, that’s certainly his decision-making). Case in point: Volpe up in the ninth with two men on, down by one run, and nobody out. If Volpe bunts, Soto is up with 1B open and the winning run on second; so they either pitch to Soto or walk him. Either way, you put the bat in Judge’s hands with the winning run in scoring position.
Add Boone’s limitations into Cashman’s years of poor offensive roster construction and we are doomed to fail.
Bottom line is that the Yankees typically do well because teams pitch to Judge/Soto during the season. In the playoffs they’re not going to pitch to them, and when they teams don’t, the Yankees cannot score.
Fever Pitch Guy
Clip – Next year when Cora is managing the Yankees, you might be wishing Boone was still with them.
The trifecta would be Cora managing the Dodgers after his managing stint with the Yankees …. then he could brag about managing every team that he screwed in 2017 with his cheating scheme.

Hope your your doing well and happy 4th. I wonder if some of nyy 2nd half problems have a lot to do with they have some older players that hit a wall once the dog days of summer approaches. The dog days plus those nagging injuries take a toll on a person, I know I can relate being in construction and in my mid 30s between the nagging injuries and the brutal summers can really kick your @$$

One good result of the new Speed-The-Game-Up rules is that those tedious 5-hour Red Sox/Yankees games won’t take so long.
I say a zippy 3:30 is the new norm.

W/L records last 10: HOU 8-2; Minn, Bos, TB 7-3; Bal, KC 6-4;Cle 5-5; Sea 3-7; NY 2-8. Any of those teams that make it to the playoffs could get hot and win the AL. Hell even a Tex/Az WS repeat is still possible.

Yankees went 44-16 in the first 60 games of the 2022 season and would go 18-11 in the 29 games that followed. Through 60 games this season the Yankees were 41-19 and have gone 13-16 since, including a 4-13 run since the two teams last met. It will be interesting to see if the Sox can keep the momentum going and take another series

I’ve been waiting all season to throw in the towel on the Sox, but they are playing scrappy if not inspired baseball. And without many key players at that. I don’t think we’re at “Why Not Us” status, but this team is fun to watch. The kids are progressing, the staff is solid and dammit that Refsnyder is nails.
Casas (definitely) and Hendricks (hopefully) will be solid additions because, let’s face it, there will not be any significant trades made by this front office.
And while I’m blabbering… I really like the proposition I read the other day about Wong going to 2B after Teel gets the call. Talk about great fortune… the throw-in from the Mookie trade turns out to be the best of the bunch.
Go Sox.
