A few weeks ago, Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow told reporters that the club is committed to picking a lane prior to the trade deadline. That deadline is now just over a week away, falling on July 30, and the Sox are still trying to decide on their approach, reports Chris Cotillo and Sean McAdam of MassLive.
The Sox have been hovering around in the Wild Card chase for most of the year but are coming off a three-game sweep at the hands of the Dodgers. That has knocked them down to 53-45, one game back of the Royals and Twins for the final two playoff spots, with the Mariners, Rays and Tigers just behind Boston.
Per Cotillo, the front office is considering all sorts of scenarios and is having exploratory talks with various other clubs. In those talks, Boston is reportedly focused on pitching and a right-handed bat, which aligns with what Breslow said to reporters a couple of weeks ago about his targets. Cotillo reports that this right-handed bat would ideally play multiple positions and that Luis Rengifo of the Angels is one target.
Rengifo, 27, is versatile in more ways than one. Defensively, he has played all three outfield positions and the three infield spots to the left of first base. He’s not considered an especially strong defender anywhere but that helps him slot into the lineup. In addition to that, he’s also a switch-hitter.
He struggled when first called up to the majors but is in the midst of a solid three-year run with the Angels. Since the start of the 2022 season, he has produced a line of .275/.325/.437. His 5.8% walk rate in that time is subpar but he’s also limited strikeouts to a rate of 16.1%. Overall, that production translates to a 112 wRC+, indicating he’s been 12% better than league average. He’s also stolen 34 bases in 36 tries in that time.
That includes a very strong line of .315/.358/.442 this year along with 22 stolen bases, though there are also some flags. His .349 batting average on balls in play this season is well beyond his career rate of .290 and the .289 league average in 2024. He also landed on the 15-day injured list two weeks ago due to inflammation in his right wrist and has an uncertain path back. As of a few days ago, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com relayed on X that Rengifo was fielding grounders, throwing and hitting off a tee, but without concrete details of his upcoming timeline.
What also could complicate matters is how the Angels are approaching the deadline. It was reported a couple of weeks ago that the Halos have a preference for only trading rental players while holding onto controllable guys like Taylor Ward, Tyler Anderson, Griffin Canning and perhaps Rengifo.
Whether that’s a true reflection of how the Angels are approaching the deadline or not remains to be seen. The club is clearly not good this year at 42-57 and there are reasons to suspect they may be challenged in being better next year. Their farm system isn’t especially well regarded and they are heavily committed to players like Anthony Rendon and Mike Trout, who continue to be held back by injuries as they age.
Rengifo is making $4.4MM this year and set for one more arbitration pass before he’s slated for free agency after 2025. He would be a sensible trade target unless the Halos really believe they have a chance at competing this year, though his current injury status might perhaps lead them to wait until the offseason or next year’s deadline. Players can be traded while on the IL but his status might impact the offers and lessen the chances of the Halos pulling the trigger.
For the Sox, their lineup leans heavily to the left side, with Tyler O’Neill, Connor Wong and Ceddanne Rafaela the only righties to be getting regular plate appearances this year. A righty bat therefore makes plenty of sense and Rengifo’s switch-hitting abilities allow him to slot into that need. He’s hit .279/.323/.452 from the right side in his career compared to .243/.308/.373 from the left side, leading to respective wRC+ tallies of 112 and 88. The split has been even more drastic lately, as he’s hit .328/.368/.555 as a righty since the start of 2022.
Whether Boston can pull the trigger on a deal there remains to be seen. Other righty bats with the ability to play multiple positions who may be available include Isaac Paredes, Brendan Rodgers, Gio Urshela, Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Nico Hoerner, Christopher Morel, Jonathan India and Abraham Toro.
Part of the reason the club is shopping in this market is due to the disappointing season of Vaughn Grissom. Acquired from Atlanta in the Chris Sale trade, he has missed time due to hamstring strains in both legs. He’s only played in 23 games for the Sox and hit .148/.207/.160 in that time. Per Sean McAdam of MassLive, manager Álex Cora indicated earlier this year that Grissom would be the club’s second baseman when he returned from his first hamstring strain. But now that he’s back on the IL with a second strain, he has no such guarantees.
“We have to take all the steps and get him stronger, get the athlete we envisioned,” Cora said. “If we get that, then we’re going to get the player and then the player shows up and we make a decision.”
In Grissom’s absence, Enmanuel Valdéz got a lot of rope but struggled and ended up optioned down to the minors. Much of the recent playing time has been going to David Hamilton, who is hitting .268/.321/.405. That’s exactly league average but his defense has been good and he’s also stolen 25 bases in 28 tries. Grissom recently began a rehab assignment and hits from the right side, while Hamilton is a lefty. Theoretically, Grissom’s return could negate the need for the Sox to go out and trade for a righty bat like Rengifo, but it sounds like their confidence in Grissom is at a bit of a low ebb right now.
Halo11Fan
The Angels should trade anyone who they can get value for.
Rexhudler86
Take him please .
Blackpink in the area
Mike Trout
For
Nick Castellanos
Taijuan Walker
Angels pay 5 million a year from 2027 through 2030.
Phillies get better now. Angels get better later and perhaps have a shot at being competitive before the decade is over.
Halo11Fan
Nope. Not even close.
Rexhudler86
@blackpink his no trade clause says it’s not happening. People want to spin he doesn’t want to lose well if he keeps missing more than half season it’s what it is.
Blackpink in the area
He grew up a Philly fan. The Phillies are one of if not the best team in baseball without him. They would be instant WS favorites with him.
If the Angels keep him they are not going to compete until his contract is over and that’s the year 2030. If they trade him they can tank for 2025 and 2026 and bounce back after that.
It makes sense. Not sure why an Angels fan wouldn’t want to do that deal.
SadHaloFan95
Walker and Castellanos and the angels pay 5M a year? Give it a rest Phillies fans lol. Trout has dug his grave. At least the grave has an estate in Newport Beach
Blackpink in the area
I am not a Phillies fan fella
The concept of the deal is very simple. The Angels take on bad money the next 2 years in order to get out of the end of Trouts contract which at this point looks like it’s going to be awful. The Angels would actually be able to compete in 2027. The way it is now they are gonna suck until 2031.
This makes sense. Would you rather watch Mike Trout try to stay on the field and perform in his late 30s or watch winning baseball?
sad tormented neglected mariners fan
Not even the Phillies would be willing to save trout with his uncertainty and albatross contract
This is an even worse Giancarlo Stanton situation but at least Stanton was coming off an MVP season in 2017 but trout hasn’t been taking the field
The only way trout will be able to exit Anaheim is if he plays well to his standards and is healthy
Blackpink in the area
The Phillies would be getting rid of 2 bad contracts. The money in 2024, 2025 and 2026 is very similar it wouldn’t increase their payroll. The bad part for the Phillies would be the years 2027 through 2030. But by that time Harper’s going to be getting old too and Nolas deal probably won’t be too pretty. I think Philly is screwed those years regardless but flags fly forever. And the fans would get to watch Harper and Trout break records so at least that’s something.
Halo11Fan
He may want to be traded to the Phillies, but that offer is laughable.
Blackpink in the area
Trout has major major negative trade value. Not sure why you would think otherwise.
Halo11Fan
That offer is laughable. Minasian, would laugh at that offer.
Rexhudler86
@black Because taking on bad salary and paying his contract down doesn’t make sense. If he really care about playing in Philadelphia he would’ve signed a contract with them. As a angels it’s tiresome hearing these rumors every year when he’s never said anything about wanting to be moved.
Blackpink in the area
I don’t care who wants what. This makes sense for the Angels it makes sense for the Phillies and makes sense for Trout.
If we are being real I don’t like how the Angels took the best player I have ever seen play baseball from my home team. But they got what they deserved. I would love to see the same thing happen with Trout but it’s not about my personal feelings. The trade makes sense.
JoeBrady
Trout has major major negative trade value.
========================
It’s about right.
Casty & Walker cost ~ $76M for about 4.3 WAR.
Trout costs $222.7M for about 21.8 WAR.
The difference is $146.6M for 17.5 additional WAR. That’s about $8.4/WAR. It makes sense for both teams. Phillies get an immediate upgrade and only start losing maybe 3 years from now.
LAA gets relieved a huge salary. They are unlikely to be good for another year or two, and the extra spending money will look huge in 2027.
In addition, there is a decidedly non-zero chance that either Walker and/or Casty revert to one of their good seasons, and the LAA could pick up some savings/lottery tickets at that point.
Blackpink in the area
Exactly Joe. It makes sense for both teams it really does. I don’t have a horse in this race I just like discussing potential trades.
As bad as Philly would be those last few years of Harper and Trouts contract at least they would get to see some records being broken. And they can remember the good ole days when(hopefully) they were the champs.
Halo11Fan
This is an example of dollars and cents not making any sense.
And if anyone exercises an ounce of common sense they’ll understand such a trade is beyond laughable.
Blackpink in the area
If the Angels did this trade they could compete again in 2027 and beyond. If they don’t the Trout contract is going to be weighing them down until the end of 2030. That’s the truth. Now if you would rather watch a 37 years old Trout play than watch winning baseball that’s your perogative.
Rexhudler86
@black your glossing over one big problem he has a ntc. I heard Rendon likes Philly cheese steak from a Bob nightingale report and he will waive his ntc for brandon marsh. Once again trout has never said he has wanted to be traded this means he won’t be traded.
Halo11Fan
So you are going to turn around and spend the money on free agents? That works out every time.
There is going to be a statue of Trout that will be outside the stadium long after you are dead. They are not going to trade him for that garbage. It’s laughable.
.
Blackpink in the area
The Angels signed Pujols to a stupid contract. I promise you there will still be a statue of Albert in St Louis. Probably already in the works.
The Trout contract is a bad contract. Your personal feelings and winning baseball games do not go hand in hand.
JoeBrady
Rexhudler86
If he really care about playing in Philadelphia he would’ve signed a contract with them.
========================
That’s pretty inaccurate, imo. Trout signed the extension prior to the 2019 season. They had Ohtani and a few other decent hitters, and the makings of a fine rotation. There was no obvious reason, other than Houston, to think they wouldn’t be annual contenders.
Now it is 5 years later, and Trout is almost 33. I wouldn’t blame him at all if he okayed a trade to Philly or Boston. In fact, I’d argue that it would be good for baseball. Just imagine Trout v Ohtani in the WS (RS) or the NLCS (Philly).
JoeBrady
It makes sense for both teams it really does.
=========================
I’d enhance that argument by saying it is good for baseball as well. And just imagine Trout going to the NYY or the RS. Even if it blows up in the end, it is an awesome amount of buzz.
Blackpink in the area
Yeah me and you aren’t fans of the Angels or Phillies we are fans of baseball. I want to see Mike Trout in the playoffs.
I get that these 2 are Angels fans. But if you are an Angels fan it seems like you would be tired of watching your team lose.
JoeBrady
Halo11Fan
This is an example of dollars and cents not making any sense.
==========================
I missed BP’s addition of $20M, but otherwise I think my numbers are spot-on correct.
How about simply explaining why it wouldn’t make sense? Virtually all trades involving a rebuilding team trading away an expensive veteran make some sense, even if you want to play around with the margins.
JoeBrady
Once again trout has never said he has wanted to be traded this means he won’t be traded.
============================
1-Trout doesn’t strike me as a player that would publicly ask for a trade.
2-Just because I haven’t asked for a transfer to the foreign currency trading desk doesn’t mean I would welcome the transfer.
If he went to Philly, he’d be a hero overnight.
Rexhudler86
@joebrady once again maybe or makes sense. Trout was ok’d to be moved if he chose too. Trout has never said anything to suggest he wants to be moved. Trout has a ntc. That makes sense. If he doesn’t want to be traded it’s not happening. Bs proposals don’t matter, or it’s a good for baseball doesn’t matter, or it’s saves them money because the angels are under the first tax. That’s facts
Blackpink in the area
The Angels wouldn’t trade him to save money dude. They would trade him then wait until after 2026 when all the terrible contracts run out and THEN spend like crazy. Then instead of Trout in his late 30s making 37 million a year you can spend that on a guy who still has some prime years left.
This will be the 9th consecutive losing season for the Angels. Aren’t you tired of watching losing baseball???
Halo11Fan
Save money? They’d eat 90 million dollars. And at 90 million less than what it is now, the contract is no longer upside own.
Really stupid post.
Blackpink in the area
Castellanos and Walker are overpaid not worthless. And yeah that contract is terrible they need to eat money. They would still save a ton.
Halo11Fan
He’d be a hero overnight? This is the city that booed Mike Schmidt and Santa Claus. They’d boo him too if he wasn’t worth the contract.
They would boo him all off season if he went 1 for 14 in playoffs. They’d boo him if he went on the IL.
He’s a hero in Anaheim now.
And it’s good for baseball when iconic players wear a single uniform. Ted Williams, Ernie Banks.
Blackpink in the area
You know what’s ironic? The Angels are the team that took Pujols from my team. They offered him a stupid contract and Pujols took it because his wife(now ex wife)wanted to live in LA. And now here is an Angels fan talking about how players should stay with 1 team blah blah blah.
Good gosh man.

Trout chose to stay with the Angels back when they had Ohtani and were mildly competitive. Now they are a cellar dweller with no hope for the future.
I hope the Angels are stuck with Trout for your sake. But for baseballs sake I hope he’s traded.
Halo11Fan
In terms of paying for itself, yes. In terms of his direct value to wins and loses, no.
This isn’t all that complex.
But enjoy. I look forward to someone writing a post dumber than yours. But by then Trout will be retired.
Halo11Fan
There is no hope for the future? Really? Texas lost a total of 196 games in 2021 and 2022.
But there is no hope for the future. You guys are a comedy duo that rivals Laurel and Hardy.

You are conveniently dropping your argument ?
Can we just drop this?
The point of all this is that the Angels as of right now are not going to trade Trout, nor is Trout, as of right now is not going to ask for a trade. It just isn’t going to happen. It would be a bad look for BOTH parties
You can present as many of your baseball card trades as you want, but the probability of a trade is nearly ZERO at this point.

Well, getting rid of Mike Trout is not going to help this teams future. So I’ll enjoy watching him play.
And you are obviously arrogant because even though you have no idea who the new owner or GM will be, you know the future of this team.
Because only teenagers are that arrogant, he’s making the assumption you’re a child. And for your sake, I hope he’s correct.
If you have this attitude as an adult, God help you.
JoeBrady
A bit of cognitive dissonance. My heart understands it completely. It took me a year or two to arrive at the conclusion that Pedey had to go. And Yaz could’ve played until he was 50 as far as I am concerned.
But that said, bad teams have to cut ties. I’m a big proponent of buying prospects. If I were the Angels, I’d ask the NYY, RS, Phillies, LAD and maybe SD what their package would be if I threw in Trout’s entire cost of $223M (or whatever Manfred okayed).
Assuming that Trout’s worth is maybe $150M, I’d be expecting $73M worth of prospects.
Nothing personal, just business.

Blackpink in the area
That was a decade ago. That was back when Trout was the MVP and Pujols was still actually decent too. Heck Hamilton wasn’t even too bad that year.
The end of the Trout deal is going to be like the end of the Pujols deal.
Halo11Fan
Just saying it’s not accurate. I’m not a big fan of hyperbole.

The didn’t win anything that year. And like I said that was a freaking decade ago. And the biggest reason why is they signed the former best player in baseball to a silly long term contract that ran until he was 40. And guess what? That’s EXACTLY what they did with Trout years later. The Angels couldn’t win anything when Trout was winning MVPs because of Albert’s albatross contract. So how the heck are the Angels gonna win with Trouts albatross contract and no MVP candidate around?
Halo11Fan
They won the American League West.. Again, I’m not a big fan of hyperbole.
Did the Red Sox not win anything with Ted Williams.
Did the Cubs not win anything with Banks, Williams and Jenkins?
Did the Ms not win anything with Edgar, Johnson, Griffey and ARod?
The best player of this generation is not going to be traded for two upside down contracts. Let alone the throwing in of millions of dollars.
It’s laughable.

Dude have the Angels even been to the playoffs since 2014? That was 10 years ago!!!
No Ted Williams never won it all. And that’s widely considered a bad thing. Doesn’t make Williams any less of a player but it’s still unfortunate.
Dude the Angels can keep Trout. I don’t care I don’t root for the Angels or the Phillies. But the trade makes sense.

The 2004 Cardinals were special. And they won the championship they should have won in 2004 in 2006 so it worked out.
The Angels were pretty good top back then if I recall correctly.

==================
You’re talking like a Trout fan. He’s played 266 games over the past four seasons. His once impeccable K/W is probably now below average. 5 & 6 years from now, you might be paying 10-15% of your payroll to a guy that might not even be playing.
socalbball
Angels need prospects. Why would they take Castellanos and Walker?
Blackpink in the area
Because they would get out of the Trout contract. That’s why.
They can still trade Estevez, Ward, Anderson and Rengifo for prospects. I imagine they want big league ready prospects. I am kidding. To the Angels all prospects are big league ready lol.
Rexhudler86
@socalbbball right let’s take contracts that are worse. Trout is still the best player in the mlb just can’t stay healthy.
Blackpink in the area
I don’t think he’s the best player in baseball anymore.
Halo11Fan
They don’t want to get out of the contract.
Rexhudler86
@black ward has play himself into another year with the angels doesn’t make sense to trade him now.
Blackpink in the area
You trade Ward now because he has trade value. You get prospects back that will help you win later when the Angels have a better chance to win.
That’s how this stuff works man.
Rexhudler86
@blackpink it doesn’t why trade him at the lowest value when he still has years and is hitting 2.30
Blackpink in the area
Lowest value? If Trout plays 150 games again next year his value will probably go up. But what are the odds that happens? He’s in his early 30s. His value is only going to get lower.
Halo11Fan
If the Angels can get prospects for Ward, trade him.
Prospects and talent are this team’s issue, not money.
YankeesBleacherCreature
@Blackpink Whether Trout is healthy or not to play, he’s still a large part of the Angels’ branding and identity. If the Angels trade him, that doesn’t improve the team and the downside is their fans become disinterested. Why disrupt a business model which works for Arte Moreno? It’s not like they actually want to compete for the foreseeable future.
Rexhudler86
@black I replied to you ward comment.
Blackpink in the area
If the Angels trade him it would improve their team in the future because they could use that money on other players who aren’t past their prime and are better bets to stay on the field.
I don’t buy this stuff about how fans care about Trout more than winning. But the comments so far have me questioning that for sure.
teddyj
Not even close. You gotta at least be on the field. Explain why Philly would want this trade?

Halo11Fan
That’s a non sequitur.. Which is typical of someone who knows he’s wrong.

socalbball
Angels need prospects. Why would they take Castellanos and Walker?
==============================
Because it is all about the money. As a RS fan, I’d be willing to throw in Abreu’s 5 years of control, or a prospect. But all that means is that LAA has to pay a much larger chunk of Trout’s salary.
But you could do it either way.
JoeBrady
To reduce the amount of money they’d need to kick in. I’d prefer to see Trout traded to the RS for a prospect, but then they’d need to kick in a lot more money.
rpoabr
Very interesting to me how divided people are on Trout’s value. Half the people think he’s got major negative value and nobody takes him regardless of salary retained, etc. the other half still think he’s going back to being the best player in baseball and might have big value.
Probably somewhere in between, but I do like the idea of doing anything they can to get him off the payroll. The next few years are wasted years regardless of if he’s here or not. Something like this just accelerates the rebuild.
Rexhudler86
@rpoab I agree, with both. But why would they trade someone with negative trade value to save some money when they’re under the 1st tax. Plus he can’t be traded. As far as the second point he still is one of the best players in the mlb. Nothing suggests otherwise he just needs to play more than 30 games.
Halo11Fan
The offer is the Phillies would have to pay four years of a six and a half year contract and get him in October.
They’d do it in a second.
As for the Angels, they absolutely wouldn’t do it for those two bums. They would not trade such an iconic player for that.
This isn’t about the value of Trout.
Blackpink in the area
Halo I don’t think you understand what you are talking about.

Rexhudler86
@blackstink you keep forgetting he can veto any trade. So the angels will keep him. Conversation about a trade is null and void until he requests a trade. That last part hasn’t happened doesn’t matter if you think it makes sense figure out another far fetched trade. I’m currently working on Rendon for Ted Williams head.
Blackpink in the area
He’s from Philly you knucklehead. Maybe he’s tired of losing year after year after year. You aren’t but maybe he is.
Halo11Fan
The ol’ non sequitur again.
The Phillies would dump 75 million dollar of worthless contracts, get 15 million from the Angels, effectively paying for Trouts salary until 2027, and I don’t understand the trade? Got it.
So basically, the Phillies would get 6 1/2 years of Trout for 148 million bucks. And since they are ready to compete now, they’d do that in a nanosecond.
It’s you who doesn’t understand the deal, even though you proposed the deal.
Blackpink in the area
If those contracts are worthless then what’s Trouts contract?????
It’s Trouts age 32 through 39 seasons. Those aren’t going to be his best years dude. Remember Pujols? Of course you do. I believe he provided negative WAR during those same years. How do you watch Pujols weigh your team down for a decade and then not understand how Trout is doing the same thing now?
Rexhudler86
@stinkpink you keep saying the same things over and over. I’m glad you did proper research trout likes the Philadelphia eagles. The sky is blue, and water is wet. You give it a rest clown show. Both of you idiots are trying to gang up on me and tell me how right you are. Your team S U C K S. What your team is doing isnt working.
Blackpink in the area
Who is everyone? Its you and this other clown trying to make it seem like you represent the Angels when you don’t. It’s just 2 stupid fans. Can’t just let it go I was dine yesterday and I wake up and here both of you trolls are still commenting. Get a life.
Rexhudler86
@blackpoo in the lips. There was many more idiots that most likely blocked you. If you make comments like that I can’t disagree because the record suggests they infact do suck. Also another fact because it’s clearly not working. It’s not ganging up on you if you say something 199 times in a row and it gets shot down everytime you should stop especially because your sources are maybe, trade simulator, and trout likes the eagles.
Blackpink in the area
Trout has played in 3 total playoff games in his career. The Angels haven’t had a winning record since 2015.
Those are facts. Whatever you think you know you don’t. Your team sucks. My suggestion could help the Angels from being terrible for years to come. But you enjoy losing I suppose
AngelsFan1972
My point is no team is winning the WS 3-4 years in a row, and becoming a dynasty. I would hope that even YOU can admit that the Cards are not considered a front runner to win it all this year either.
Give a rest
JoeBrady
Probably somewhere in between,
=====================
It should always be somewhere in between, or else you’d have a whole lot less trading. One team has to view him as a declining super star while the other team has to think of him as someone slowly exiting his peak years.
JoeBrady
you keep forgetting he can veto any trade.
========================
But would he veto it? I’d bet that he’d be fairly happy to go to Philly. He’s almost 33 without a WS ring. And unlikely to get one in LA. I think he is a standup player, but he could easily rationalize that a trade could also be in the best interests of LAA.
AngelsFan1972
why why why why why
Anyone who brings up a “Trout trade” scenario should immediately be banned from MLBTR. It is beyond idiotic at this point. Even the idiots are mocking you!
Halo11Fan
1972, if Trout want to go to the Phillies, fine. But to think that the Angels are going to trade Trout along with millions of dollars for those two dregs is the dumbest thing I’ve ever read on this board.
I guess this guys argument is a team can’t be competitive spending 37 million on Trout. Yet, the Phillies are competitive spending 38 million on two dregs.
It’s the dumbest thing I’ve read in a long, long time.
AngelsFan1972
Halo11Fan
I am more annoyed that he continues to support his argument when it is clear that he is the minority, and by a long ways.
And….
Give it a minute a new ‘dumb comment” will arise soon!
GoogleMe
Angels should not trade everything they can get value for. They should keep players like O’Hoppe and Neto and build around them.
They should have traded Ohtani, but didn’t. Instead, they traded what little they did have in the minors last year for players like Giolito, Moustakas, Escobar, Grichuk, etc.
Angels would be looking to rebuild if they were able to trade Trout. They would trading for young talent. Walker and Castallenos do not fit the bill.
Halo11Fan
People love doubling down and sticking to their guns.
The Angels won’t be able to compete spending 37 million on Trout, but the Phillies can win it all spending 38 million on those two dregs?
The take is beyond dumb.
AngelsFan1972
Google
I agree.
They should look to trade ANY RENTAL, or player over 28 years old.
They SHOULD build upon players like Neto, O’Hoppe, Schanuel, Crouse, Joyce and Soriano. I am on e the fence about Detmers, Adell, Moniak and Paris
Halo11Fan
I highly doubt the Angels are going to get value for O’Hoppe and Neto. That’s nine years of team control. They will not get more value back.
They should have traded Ohtani. And if the Angels can get value for players that are not under team control for the next three seasons, they should trade them.
Blackpink in the area
The Phillies are a good team. The Angels had both Trout and Ohtani in their prime and couldn’t compete. So now with just Trout in his mid to late 30s the Angels are going to suddenly be competitive? I doubt it.
Blackpink in the area
It’s nice that you Angels fans are having a chance to bond over something. Winning can do that but I guess you take what you can get.
Blackpink in the area
Googleme how do you not understand this? The Angels would get out of the end of Trouts contract. That’s what they would get out of the deal and that’s extremely valuable. If they keep Trout he’s going to be making 37 million a year into his late 30s. That’s the point of the deal.
AngelsFan1972
Blackpink
Give it a rest. You are clearly in the minority yet you defend your hypothetical and unrealistic trade.
Before you go off and defend yourself ONCE AGAIN, let me remind you Trout ahs a NO TRADE CLAUSE and he never publicly stated he wants to be traded.

YankeesBleacherCreature
@Blackpink Your misguided premise is that you think the Angels actually want to take the necessary risks to compete. The Angels haven’t signed a starting pitcher to a long-term contract since 2011 in CJ Wilson. Moreno is perfectly happy taking in the profits yearly without taking big risks. Offensive players ideally play every day and star pitchers don’t. The Rockies operate in a very similar way.
Halo11Fan
So your argument 37 million bucks they spend on Trout is going to prevent them from winning three years from now?
Keep digging.
Halo11Fan
It’s nice that people with no common sense, like yourself, can bond as well.
Halo11Fan
And you have just shown that a team can easily recover form two bad contracts on players that couldn’t carry Trout’s jock.
The guy who buys the Angels can easily pay for Trout and build a team. The money is inconsequential.
But no matter how easily that is to prove, you still won’t get it.
Halo11Fan
The Angels have a bad GM and a bad owner.
Both will be rectified shortly.
But even with a bad GM and bad Owner, no one is stupid enough to make that trade.
teddyj
Why would Philly want that and the years of less than 100 games played until then?
Blackpink in the area
The idea is the Phillies would hope he’s healthy when it matters most. Heck the Phillies will win the division and most likely get a first round bye without his help. But with his help I think they are the WS favorites. At least for the next few years.
YankeesBleacherCreature
You’ve got knowledgeable fans from both sides of the trade that tell you that it’s not a feasible nor realistic trade yet it’s the hill you choose to die on. Phillies have the best team right now and they don’t need to do this trade.
Halo11Fan
The Phillies would get Trout and not have to pay him until 2027.
Flags fly forever, I have zero doubt they’d take that trade in a second.
And no. The trade is a joke.
Angels wouldn’t do it.
Blackpink in the area
The Angels would have Walker and Castellanos and hope one or both bounces back and they could then trade them for salary relief or prospects.
Most importantly the Angels get out of paying Trout from 2027 through 2030 his age 35 through 39 seasons. That’s the benefit.
How long has it been since the Angels didn’t have at least 1 terrible contract weighing them down?
Halo11Fan
They would be irrelevant to this team. The Angels will have all the money in the world in 2027. They don’t need to offload his contract. No one on this team will be making any money in 2027. No one is good enough.
Getting rid of Trout will not help them compete. If Moreno goes, the new owner rebuilds the infrastructure of this team, and they hire a competent GM, only then can they compete.
Trouts contract is not much of a factor. That extra 37 million bucks will hardly be noticed.
Blackpink in the area
Lol OK then. Good luck.
Halo11Fan
I don’t know why you have the LOL.
You think the new owner is going to care about that 37 million bucks?
Anyway, it doesn’t matter. No way the Angels would ever consider such a trade and the Phillies would do it in a nanosecond.

=========================
I’m on the side of the numbers. To me, it makes an abundance of sense for the Angels to trade Trout. And I said that back when Trout had a lot more value. And I said the same thing 2 years ago about Ohtani at the trade deadline.
One can argue about a proper return, but I see no argument for wanting a 38 year old Trout at $37M.
JoeBrady
No one has unlimited money. The NYM and SDP spent a gazillion $ and then backed off. They NYY are hesitating about spending. The RS dropped well under the cap.

Does Breslow bust out the Lambo down the HOV or the Kei truck? So much anticipation.
Joemo
I wonder what Boston would have to give up.
I’d almost prefer a pure rental as there’s so many potential MI solutions next year. Yes prospects don’t always pan out but: Story, Mayer, Hamilton, Yorke, Campbell, Grissom, etc.
Long winded way to say: if he’s cheap enough sure, grab him (1:1 for Yorke? Maybe add a low-A flier?). Otherwise waiting it out. Spend those resources on a pitcher.
Blackpink in the area
I think Rengifo is worth 15 to 20 million in surplus value. He’s playing really well hitting 315 that’s impressive. Perhaps a prospect in the 60 to 80 range overall which off the top of my head would be someone like Teel I think. But they don’t need a catcher. Perhaps a couple prospects ranked lower.
KingKen
You’re insane if you think any team would give up a prospect like Teel for someone like Rengifo.
Blackpink in the area
Dude calm down. I said off the top of my head. I looked it up and he’s not in the 60 to 80 range right?
Right
teddyj
Black pink is just trolling or either clueless
Blackpink in the area
What do YOU think is a fair trade for Mike Trout? He’s old. He can’t stay on the field. And he’s making 37 million a year.
Good gosh folks. Don’t you want to watch winning baseball again?
Joemo
Something to keep in mind is Rengifo will be under contract (arbitration) through next season. So he’s not a pure rental. He’s going to be more expensive than a typical rental.
I went back a few years and looked at who was ranked in 60-80 in 2018 and boy there’s some good ones. There’s also some real bad ones.
bkbk
You’re overvaluing your prospects.
Blackpink in the area
I was using trade simulator before they started charging money for it. Again I think Rengifo has 15 to 20 million in surplus value and that counts 2025. And that is typically a prospect in the 60 to 80 range and yes those guys sometimes perform and sometimes do not. Since the Red Sox don’t have anyone ranked in thst range it probably takes 2 or 3 lesser prospects.
Halo11Fan
So trading Trout for nothing is going to help them win?
You think the new owner is not going to have the money and that Trouts salary will be a drain?
It’s laughable.
Blackpink in the area
Trout is making 37 million a year from now until the end of 2030.
Do you think he’s going to earn that money?
I bet he doesnt.
Rexhudler86
@teddyj every angel post there’s a idiot that says trade trout. Pretty sure he changes names or has multiple accounts.
JoeBrady
They aren’t getting any of the top-3 or even Yorke. He is a nice fit, but your basic 2.0-2.5 WAR player. I would take a look at Yorke at 2nd before I’d trade him for Rengifo.
Blackpink in the area
Rengifo for his career is a 2 or 2.5 win player. But this year he’s twice that. So he certainly could be that moving forward don’t know for sure but he could be.

There is zero chance any of Mayer, teel or Anthony are getting moved. Breslow would hang up the phone if that was the ask
chalk73
Wikelman Gonzalez or Luis Perales
rmullig2
I would say Hamilton and Yorke would be fair value.
AngelsFan1972
I would hope that whoever the Angels trade, they get above market value.
The other teams are coming to the Angels, it isn’t the other way around. It is a rare change of events, but for once, the Angels have leverage at the trade deadline.
bostonbob
Noemi and throw in Bobby D. He useless, unless he is in Worcester.
Rsox
Sox need pitching, not another Infielder
Fever Pitch Guy
Rsox – This trade would represent the big RH bat they are seeking.
But the bottom line, I cannot believe ownership hasn’t committed to buying yet. Regardless of how they are expected to perform in the second half with the tough schedule, they have already EARNED a commitment from ownership to GFIN.
They are 8 over .500 and will likely go at least 4-3 prior to the deadline, what a slap in the face it would be to sell.
Joemo
Fever – it takes two to tango. Unless a team gets blown away by an offer, they will probably wait for closer to the deadline before making a trade to maximize return.
I also assume FSG is waiting until the last possible second to OK anything, as they’re looking for any and every excuse to not spend on the team.
Fever Pitch Guy
Joe – I agree on waiting before trading, but the Angels would be risking the possibility he gets injured before then.
And you’re 100% right about FSG, they are probably hoping the Sox go 2-5 to further “justify” selling. Such a shame, they really did already earn ownership’s commitment.
all in the suit that you wear
I think most deals this year will come right down to the deadline as the sellers try to get the most they can and the buyers try to wait them out.
KingKen
Every comment I’ve seen from the FO lately is that they’re looking to acquire players for this year’s team. If you’re expecting someone from the team to say “we’re definitely going to add someone regardless of the cost in prospects” you’re never going to get that.
Fever Pitch Guy
Ken – As we have learned quite often the past few years, we can’t believe Sox management will do anything until they actually do it.
Sure they are “exploring” the acquisition of players, just like they “explored” signing free agents last offseason. And what did they say afterward? The usual BS about not matching up or not lining up or whatever.
MassLive is a reputable source, they wouldn’t say the Sox haven’t chosen a lane yet if they had already chosen a lane.
Trollfree
Fever – I have been complaining about Wong and other pretenders batting too high in the order while dummy Cora has Rafaela batting down in the order despite have one of the highest RBI totals. On a whim I went to the old reliable stats source and found out the hot hitting Wong is actually hitting .205 after hitting .343, .317 and .323 in June. Can you say second half swoon?
Rafaela while starting slowly with a .186 and .239 average in April and May he’s hit .315 in June and is at .298 in july. Which pattern reminds you of Casas in 2023? It’s a good thing Cora at least hit Casas in the top 5 not 8 or 9 like he does Rafaela.
Cora has to go to give Boston a chance in 2024. They have already dropped out of a playoff position with the sweep in LAD thanks to Cora.
Fever Pitch Guy
TF – Can you believe they lost yet another game, this time to the lowly Rockies after leading them twice in extra innings … including a 2-run lead in one of the extra innings.
Once Cora used up his entire bench early on I knew they were toast, but the pitcher management was fine for once. It was just the errors (Rafaela & O’Neill) that proved to be very costly. Houck looked awful again, seems like teams have learned how to adjust against him.
Now today is a bullpen game for the Sox, so crossing my fingers Criswell is on his game and can give 5 innings because I doubt Kelly will be available and right now there’s nobody else in the pen that I really trust except maybe Boozer.
Can you imagine if the Sox lose this series before beginning the brutal 28-game stretch starting with the Yankees? The Sox are now 2 games out of a WC spot and Houston is just one win behind them and both Tampa & Detroit are just 3 wins behind them. The pressure is on.
medic87
yes they need pitching, but they also need a middle infielder who bats righty.
Rsox
Actually they need a 1B/DH bat that hits righty. They had a Second Baseman playing First Base the last two nights in Denver against LH starters
prov356
I doubt Moreno will let him go since he has one more arb year. A typical Moreno move would be to not trade Rengifo this year, Rengifo continues to play well next year. Moreno doesn’t trade him next year when we stink again. Then we lose him to free agency for nothing.
Halo11Fan
Moreno is the reason he’s here. Rengifo and the rumored Ward were going to the Dodgers for Stripling and Joc Peterson.
Moreno vetoed the deal.
bkbk
I hate Moreno but talk about a good move
Halo11Fan
I don’t hate anyone. Most people are mixed bags. Moreno has done some good and bad things.
My biggest gripe with him was destroying the infrastructure of the minor leagues and not hiring a team President.
prov356
I’ve not always been a fan but I’m glad we still have Rengifo. By all reports, there is no way we will be competitive in 2025. We should get what we can in young talent by trading guys like him. I don’t think Moreno will. The only way smart moves will begin to take place is if you are correct about a buyer for the team.
prov356
I don’t know that Moreno vetoed the deal because he is a brilliant baseball mind. I think he hates trading with the Dodgers so he did it out of spite. It just happened to work out.
Halo11Fan
He nixed the deal out of pride. It had nothing to do with his baseball acumen.
Rexhudler86
@halo11fan kinda glad he did. I believe it was because the Betts trade was reworked, and the angels were going to get someone else that went to the red Sox. Either way everyone the redsox got fizzled out.
Halo11Fan
It was something like that. Dodgers made a trade to the Angels, something the Dodgers were doing fell through, and they wanted to get that part done before the Angel trade.
Arte felt slighted and nixed the trade. All pride.
Rexhudler86
@halo11fan I believe the guy they wanted is the last one standing in Boston, but not spectacular rengifo can get more value if he comes off the dl before the deadline, and I say keep ward because we don’t have any outfielder knocking on the door. Trade him next year because he still is scared of getting hit. Last night’s game is showing he could bounce back.
Halo11Fan
I’d be curious to see what the Angels could get for Rengifo. I would think he’d net a prospect that might be on the top 100 list.
teddyj
Bosox bats got too many holes in them , struck out 7 times against Paxton (who is only fanning 16.4 of batters) and 14 for the game. Two blown saves in one game and gave up homer to tie the game and single to win the game to Keke who was hitting under.200. A completely lost weekend in LA

What’s going on with Mayer? Is he not ready to come up to help Boston?
all in the suit that you wear
I’m guessing Mayer will be promoted to AAA soon as he is doing really well in AA.
Trollfree
All – Is he? Really?
His average has fallen 41 points between June and July
He has 1 of his 13 SBs in the last month
He had 15 RBIs in May, 12 in June and just 2 so far in July.
About all one can say is that his 2024 is the best he’s done since he got picked 4th in 2021. That way nobody realizes that his 2023 was miserable.
Historically, prospects over hyped do get promotions quicker than they deserve so you may be right but is 74 games enough to suggest that his hot streak in May suggests he’s good enough to be promoted or should his dropping stats be a point of concern and slow the hype train down so he’s ready for AAA and doesn’t end up like Jeter Downs?
all in the suit that you wear
KD: Mayer is leading the AA Eastern League in batting average (.306), is 5th in slugging (.481) and is 6th in OPS (.852). Teel is 2nd in batting average (.305), 7th in slugging (.470) and 4th in OPS (.861). I think they will likely be promoted soon so they can be challenged.
Bruin1012
All in my guess Mayer is up in AAA Worcester very soon probably August 1st.
Troll don’t know where you are getting your facts but here’s the reality from June 1st to current Mayer has slashed .324/.423/.457 he’s also walked at a 13.8% clip and struck out at 15.4% clip. His numbers are actually getting better as the season goes along. April he was very fortunate babip wise but know he’s really hitting the ball well. He’s only played 6 games in July but he has hit well in July as well. Not really sure where you are getting your numbers but assure you Mayer has and continues to hit the ball very well. Stolen Bases are not going to be a big part of his game but he’s an excellent base runner with a high baseball IQ so he will always probably pick and choose. The only issue and the only reason he’s still in AA is his left on left he needs work there but he will get that in AAA Worcester no reason for him to continue to be in AA and he won’t be soon.
Bruin1012
Troll it’s looking more and more like Mayer’s 2023 was due to injury. The fact is Mayer was slashing .337/.414/.582 before the injury. He slashed .190/.256/.366 after the injury.
Trollfree
Bruin1012 – I presented numbers by month which is non biased. You picked June first for a reason and it’s completely biased to support your point. Picking segments rather than using all the facts has been a difference that has existed between the two of us for years. People can manipulate numbers to pretty much say anything they believe.
Funny thing is I specifically told you where my numbers came from. Go into Baseball Reference and look up Mayer and choose splits. It shows the data by month. It doesn’t get any more unbiased than that. Every single thing I wrote was a fact whether you believe it or not. It’s documented.
Look at the ACTUAL trends in his data, don’t choose what supports conveniently supports your argument. You always introduce bias when pick your time segments to match your argument.
Also, saying somebody is hitting the ball very well is meaningless without defining very well and when he is hitting it very well. If a player’s performance by month is declining is he really hitting the ball well or was he doing that in May and he’s tailed off?
When you look at the page I am referencing so you can see the full set of facts not the segment you chose to create the mirage of a player doing better than he actually is, you will notice his average with 2 outs and runners in scoring position is .233. Is that what is expected from the fourth pick in the draft at AA as a 21 year old? You seem to be missing the point. I’m not saying he’s bad, he’s just a lot less than one would expect from the fourth pick in the draft. This is now his fourth season since being drafted and this is his best season and it’s still not more than slightly better than league average. Is this going to be like Devers’ fielding where you justified it for years as being acceptable despite in being 30 to 40 points below league average. Mayer is a wasted pick at 4 based on his numbers but had he gone in the 3 to 5th round he’d be performing well.
Now you are saying stealing isn’t a big part of his game but historically it was. Fast and smart base runner becomes just a smart base runner. OK. Again, not leaning toward above league average in that area either.
Check his errors. I know people have distorted viewpoints on what an error means in a game and they can justify them if the person has good range which is a total joke but this 4th pick in the draft is nearly as bad as Devers’ at fielding in the minors. As a AA shortstop he has 10 errors in 206 attempts for a fielding percentage of .951. At AA Devers’ fielding percentage was an abysmal .930. Maybe he has fielding to work on too before he’s ready for AAA.
Since you pointed out the 6 games in July I would have thought you could have read the entire stat line which clearly states a .292 average down from June’s .333 (which is what is expected from a 4th pick in the draft) When you do the math it is 41 points down from the previous month. This is not shocking despite only being 6 games because the last week of June ended with an O for every other day. that amounted to 5 for 23 or a .217 during the last week of June.
Much like Abreu, one of Mayer’s tendencies is to have big games against bad pitching and dry spells against good pitching. In July, two 0 fors, 2 1 fors, a 2 for and a 3 for 3 game. Just like Abreu, he keeps his average artificially high by roasting bad pitching and having that make up for what he does when he faces good pitching. That’s not a winning formula in the end. These are all reasons I consider Mayer a league average type player who got drafted 4th by a GM who had no clue how to spot talent. I bet his staff in TB are laughing the rear-ends off because they fooled Henry into thinking Bloom had a clue thanks to their choices.
The scary thing is I believe you are right that he will be prematurely moved based on marketing hype and farm system coaches who lie about his performance just like they did for Devers. AA coach publicly stated for Devers that his defense was much improved yet it was the season he had the most errors while in the minors. This isn’t a new story in Boston. Mayer likely will get promoted before he’s ready. You put enough people publicizing his achievements like you do and they can justify it without using any facts, just selected segments of data that spins a lie to the public.
I saw him flounder in the Futures Game when Teel excelled. The data supports that fact on true performance of the two prospects. One is above league average and the other isn’t and is simply riding the hype train.
Trollfree
Bruin1012 – Not sure where your theory fits in the facts. Here is what Ian Browne wrote.
Mayer struggled when he moved up a level, which isn’t surprising for a player who was drafted out of high school just two years ago. In 169 at-bats across 43 games before he was placed on the injured list, Mayer had a line of .189/.254/.355 with six homers and 20 RBIs.
What Browne NEVER says is that he was injured during those games. The injury happened right before he went on the IL at the end of July supposedly.
FYI… After being hurt at the end of the 2022 season and losing playing time, he came back in 2023 and hit .290 in Hi-A (just 35 games) then got prematurely promoted to AA and played his first game on May 31st. He went 0 for 5. Then 0 for 3, 0 for 3 and 0 for 4. Fifteen at bats no hits showing the promotion was premature. He faced bad pitchers on June 4th and got 3 hits just like he did at Hi-A to keep his average artificially higher than his true skill level. The reason his season was so bad, he didn’t have many multi-hit games which he had always counted on to keep his average up. He had 3 in the 23 games in June of 2023. He had four more multi-hit games through July 17th then went 6 for 41 to finish the season at AA and landing on the IL. Some say he was hurt like 2022 and had to miss the rest of the season or maybe it was the organization stopping the skid to maintain his ranking. Either way, the injury didn’t create a bad season, he did because he got moved to AA too soon based on his real skills. He’s a hype machine which demands climbing the farm system at a rate that exceeds his skills.
His 2024 performance includes an April where he had 2 three hit games and 5 two hit games and just 2 0 for games. That suggests he was finally for AA ball nearly a year after he was first promoted.. It’s only 18 games but it’s much more like we expected as a fourth pick in the draft.
So the injury in 2023 was not why he failed to meet expectations of a fourth pick in the draft, it was because the Red Sox prematurely promoted him from Hi-A after too small a sample size. If his two injuries are legitimate it explains why he’s behind his scheduled development. He needs more time in AA to see pitchers from both good pitching staffs and bad pitching staffs. If he can hit .333 against both, he’s ready for AAA. If he can’t, there will be another excuse when he fails at AAA in 2024 and gets reset at AAA in 2025 hoping his low numbers won’t carry forward. A late arrival in 2025 is a reasonable expectation if he can handle good AAA pitching but my guess is the Red Sox will move him to the majors before that happens and you’ll see a repeat of Duran, Casas and Rafaela. A slow start and a best case scenario of him improving by the end of the season in 2024. Maybe even a batting average of .240 before 2024 ends. That’s best case scenario. Back at AAA is worst case scenario or maybe yet another injury for what appears to be an injury prone player.
Fever Pitch Guy
mlb – If ownership decides to sell, I can see Mayer and Yorke being called up in August or September. Until then, and with Grissom’s status uncertain at the moment, it’s impossible to free up roster space for promotions.
I think they also want to see what they’ve got in Hamilton, who right now is looking more like Billy.

Troll are you aware of the saying “ Pot, Kettle, Black”. Are you seriously arguing that the trend for Mayer is down in a month he played 6 games so far and you have the balls to tell me I’m using biased information. That’s hilarious, the fact is you manipulate facts all the time for your narrative. It’s really hard to take you seriously when you spout untruths. If you are going to state that Mayer feasts on bad pitching then prove it. That’s just your extremely biased opinion. In fact anything that Bloom has done you can’t be objective on because of your bias. You are so biased you can’t acknowledge an injury.
Here’s Marcelo Mayer numbers by month and since the beggining of the season:
April 18 games 84 plate appearances he slashed .308/.345/.474
May 28 games 119 plate appearances he slashed .287/.336/.509
June 22 games 96 plate appearances he slashed ..333/.438/.444
July 6 games 27 plate appearances he slashed .292/.370/.500
Those are facts and they are indisputable and they add up to one of maybe the best overall hitter in the Eastern League this season. You are quoting rbi and stolen bases to support argument in 6 games I don’t even have to tell you how ridiculous that is you know it or at least I think your intelligent enough to realize how stupid that argument is.
Talk about finding a narrative to support your theory all I said was Mayer slashed .337/.414/.582 before his shoulder injury and that’s a fact. He slashed .190/.256/.366 after the shoulder injury and that’s a fact.
Numerous interviews with Mayer he pointed out when the injury happened it was May 7th 2023 he was 3-3 and triple away from the cycle he hit a ball in the gap took an aggressive turn around 2nd lost his footing and fell awkwardly on his shoulder. This isn’t something I made up it’s a fact that you can verify pretty easily. He woke up the next morning and couldn’t raise his arm above his shoulder and then these are his quoted words not mine. “My swing was just giving out every single time” “The littlest thing can impact your swing you start compensating somewhere else, which is not a good thing, which is why I learned a lot from this experience. But as a player there is one place you want to be and that’s on the field”. Let’s fast forward to this season he’s now healthy and for the season he’s slashing .306/.371/.481.
In the future if you want to make a trending argument you should probably start it out by acknowledging the small sample size of your trending argument and then state that despite the small sample size my opinion is based on 6 games in July Mayer is trending down. At least that would more factual.
It’s truly hard to take you seriously you regurgitate statistics I’d venture to say you haven’t watched him at all and you manipulate said statistics to further your narrative on how bad Bloom has been. Your blind hatred for anything Bloom clouds your judgement. I have news for that Bloom guy drafted arguably the steals of the 2022 and 2023 drafts when he drafted Roman Anthony and Campbell but your blind hatred can only see the negative in fact I think you wish for these guys failures and simply because Bloom drafted them. You’re by far the most biased poster on this site. It’s really hard to comment when you haven’t even watched the guy your spouting your mouth off about play. It’s why I don’t like to talk about guys in the DSL and FCL I haven’t watched them play. Sure I could look at a guy like Cespedes or Arias in the FCL and regurgitate stats but stats sometimes lie especially with prospects. I hope you have a good day KD and maybe I left you some food for thought.
Bruin1012
On a different note finally get to lay eyes on Franklin Arias he was promoted to Salem today he slashed .355/.471/.584 as an 18 year old in the FCL He slashed .350/.440/.453 as a 17 year old in DSL last year. With Cespedes out for the season with a broken hamate bone it makes sense to promote Arias not much else to prove in the FCL.

All – So the numbers and games played don’t matter it’s simply a case of being the best players in a weak league?
Do you ever look at the path each one has taken to determine if they are ready?
Teel is 10 months older than Mayer but went to college and played 177 games versus better competition than Mayer and his numbers were .343/433/.547/,979, Outstanding numbers for an ACC player. He graduated last year and was so good that in three games of ROK ball he showed the college competition was far better than ROK ball so he got promoted and it was justified. He went to Hi-A and his average of .429 in ROK dropped to .377!! Yes, Hi-A pitching was nowhere near as good as the college pitchers he faced so he got moved once again after just 14 games and it was justified. He moved to AA for 9 games and hit .323. These are the numbers of a first round draft pick.
In 2024, a year after college, he starts in AA after hitting .323 last year and he’s now hitting .305 after 68 games. Since he has dominated at each level, taking a chance on promoting him is a safe bet. AAA will be the first time he is challenged since college. It makes perfect sense that he be promoted soon.
Mayer’s story is ugly compared to Teel’s. Drafted in 2021 with the fourth pick he plays 26 games and hits .275 while Teel is facing better pitching in college and is hitting .335. Then in 2022 Mayer makes a stop at A ball which Teel skipped and he plays 66 games and hits. .286 while Teel is hitting .276 in the much tougher AAC conference. Mayer gets promoted to Hi-A where he finishes the year with a .265 average in 25 games. That’s the same league where Teel hit .377 in 14 games and proved he didn’t belong there. Mayer returned to Hi-A to start the 2023 season so his .290 average was achieved while Teel was hitting .377 and smoking the Hi-A pitching. Eventually, 35 games later, Mayer got moved to AA where he .189 while Teel was hitting .323 at AA.
So at this point does it seem like these two players are similar in skill level to you? I don’t think so. One guy performs and the other guy continues to struggle. That’s how 2023 ended. Teel was a stud and Mayer was a dud.
Both players start 2024 at AA. Mayer has played 74 games and Teel has played 68. 6 less games because Teel is a catcher. There numbers for this short 70 game segment are close to identical. Is your opinion that their skill levels are nearly identical now after several years of a huge imbalanced between the two? Should Mayer finally playing better be viewed as if he dominated like Teel did since he graduated a year ago?
My view is that Mayer needs to spend more time establishing that he can maintain his current level of performance while Teel is ready for the next step based on his full history.
Point in time analysis does not reflect history. If a batter gets 3 hits on a day when the other batter gets 3 hits that doesn’t mean they have comparable skills or maturity. Mayer has a lot more to prove than Teel does. The futures game showed the huge difference between the two. They saw superior pitching in that contest and Teel handled it and Mayer did not. So, for me, Teel is ready and Mayer is not. Now consider how bad Mayer’s defense is and I can fully justify him not being promoted for some time or possibly finding a new position where he can field at the MLB league average level so we don’t have two Devers on the left side of the infield.

Bruin1012 – I presented the facts and they are identical to what you just wrote. Why do I need to point out there were only 6 games when it’s right there on the page for everyone to read?
So if this injury theory is true not just another excuse, why is it when he got hot in June a month after the injury he couldn’t maintain it? Did he get yet another excuse injury or was he simply not hitting? He might have had a short time when he was impacted by the fall say 2 games right after it where he went 0 for but then he went 6 for 12 against a team with bad pitching. So was he taking some magic beans or something that helped him suddenly recover and then he lost the beans when he started to stink it up again. Did the injury come and go? hahaha You have no credible evidence that there was an impact to anything but the two games after it happened. He had hot streaks and cold streaks afterward and it just so happened the cold were more than the hot so his numbers sucked. That’s on him not some injury he’s using as a crutch to explain poor performance. You wait, he’s got a pattern to his hot and cold streaks just like Abreu. He’s a pretender and it will come out eventually, just like it did for Jeter Downs.
Presenting all the data, by the way, allows all individuals to evaluate the data on their own. You prefer to suggest to people what things mean and produce stats to justify your opinion. Your argument was totally lame that I did anything biased. The facts are the facts and somehow you think repeating the facts and then declaring your opinion is the non-biased way evaluate stats. hahaha
Mayer is in the middle of his best streak to date and that’s happening in his 4th season and Teel did well in college against better competition and has hit the ground running just like a first round pick should. Huge difference in skills, durability if the injuries were legit to Mayer, huge difference in experience playing college ball to the lower minors.
Lumping these two guys together because one is playing the best he’s ever played and the other is bored waiting for the next level is a travesty. One will be an all-star and the other if he learns how to field with be a league average player.
JoeBrady
Great stats. But if you are arguing with someone who bases their opinion of a prospect on who drafts him, you’re probably wasting your time,
Bruin1012
Troll what are you talking about his injury was on May 7th 2023 and in June of 2023 Mayer hit .186/.267/.419. I’m not quite sure what you are talking about. Mayer, to my knowledge, hasn’t been injured in 2024. This is why imo he has looked much better.
Your argument is ludicrous if you are saying in July he is faltering in 6 games. Just quit while you’re behind. It’s not like Mayer has fallen off a cliff in July he’s still slashing .292/.370/.500 in those games good for an .870 ops in July slightly down from the OPS in June.
You should probably at least do enough research to at least know when and how I got injured the dates, the facts, etc. Mayer’s numbers have been remarkedly consistent this season and that consistency adds up to arguably the best hitter in the Eastern League.

Bruin – I sure hope he’s not related to Jodi.

Article says plays many positions ,but not great defensively???? Welcome to Boston Sir…

olm – Maybe they’ll bring back the “versatile” Danny Santana!!!!!

If you’re a billionaire searching for a team to buy, LAA would be on your radar. If you’re a player for LAA, anywhere else should be on your radar. LAA sucks the life out of players. Rengifo, Adell, Neto, etc., would all do better with other teams. LAA can keep Rendon.

No one is going to pay full price for the Angels right now. No long term stadium solution. 4 more years, before the Angels have to move. No new stadium site picked out yet. No television deal after this season..
Halo11Fan
Oh goodie, more hyperbole. What would a board be like without it. Langston, Salmon and Anderson are in the broadcast booth. Weaver posts on X just about everyday. And the only Angel I’ve heard say a negative word this century was Lackey, and he didn’t insult the team, he said the fans were too laid back.
chemfinancing
I was thinking they would’ve been a great fit for Chisholm, if not the best fit, but of course tight wad Boston ain’t gonna pony up (Mariners or Pirates for Jazz)
Johnny Bravo
I’m a big Mike Trout fan since Arte Moreno is wearing the Satan suit on I am in favor of Mike Trout going to Philadelphia Phillies a chance to play in the World Series, even if we don’t get nothing back for him, I’m OK with it you know why because we didn’t get nothing back for Shohei Ohtani Philadelphia freedom
Bob_Laublaw
I wonder if the Angels would be interested in package featuring Yoshida if Boston ate the bulk of that contract. He’s not nearly bad enough to DFA but he is untenable on the RS roster going forward. If it were just the matter of him being a DH it would be one thing but this team needs to balance its lineup even the best prospects in their system are lefties. They can’t afford to play a full time lefty DH who can’t field or run. If they need to package him and cash with an ok prospect or be part of a multiple player trade, so be it. No idea if he fits the Angels either just hoping some team would take a chance on him as a change of scenery player
AngelsFan1972
Bob,
Boston would have to throw in some HIGH END prospects for the Angels to take on that contract as an adder to such a trade.
The Angels have the leverage at this point, so the only way they take on an albatross contract is if Boston sweetens the deal substantially.
Bruin1012
Reading comprehension is important. Bob said if the Red Sox eat the bulk of the contract.
AngelsFan1972
yeah and??????
I was simply adding additional thoughts to what was stated.
Reading comprehension is important, it goes both ways.
angelsbroncosfan
Bob we will take that contract, when Boston takes Rendon and throws in a reliever prospect
Fever Pitch Guy
bronco – Yeah a player who hates baseball playing in Boston, what could possibly go wrong?
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
I think getting this guy is a huge mistake for the Red Sox. We dont need him. We need pitching, and frankly, I think we miss the postseason this year anyway. In either way, this guy does not tip in our favor.

What’s amazing is how this imbecilic trade proposal keeps evolving to justify the imbecilic trade proposal.
