The Rangers selected reliever Daniel Robert onto the MLB roster for tonight’s matchup with the Angels. Texas optioned Grant Anderson to Triple-A Round Rock to clear a spot in the bullpen. In order to open space on the 40-man roster, the Rangers designated lefty Antoine Kelly for assignment.
Robert gets his first big league call a few weeks shy of his 30th birthday. Texas drafted him in 2017 as a 21st-round pick out of Auburn. Robert has pitched parts of three seasons (including all of 2024) in Round Rock. After struggling in his first two seasons there, he has posted excellent numbers across 25 appearances this year.
Through 30 2/3 innings, Robert carries a 2.35 earned run average. He has punched out more than 35% of batters faced while walking only 6.1% of opponents. It’s a massive improvement over last season, when he fanned 26.4% of hitters with a near-12% walk percentage. Robert has fanned 12 without issuing a walk in his most recent 10 2/3 frames.
His promotion bumps Kelly off the roster. The 24-year-old is a former second-round pick of the Brewers who runs his fastball into the high 90s. Milwaukee traded him to Texas at the 2022 deadline in the Matt Bush deal. Texas added Kelly to the 40-man roster to keep him out of last winter’s Rule 5 draft, but things haven’t gone well this season.
Kelly has walked 21 of the 91 hitters he’s faced in Round Rock. That’s clearly not viable and resulted in a 9.39 ERA. That pushed him back to Double-A last week and now off the roster entirely. The Rangers have five days to trade the 6’5″ lefty or put him on waivers. Kelly pitched to a 1.95 ERA with a 32% strikeout rate in Double-A last season. He still has a full slate of options and could find some interest on the waiver wire, this year’s control woes notwithstanding.

What’s his last name?
Canuckleball
There are 3 guys named in the article and all 6 names are technically first names.
hiflew
All 6 could be last names too.
Davis Daniel
Luis Robert
Mudcat Grant (I am surprised I had to go back that far for a Grant)
Tyler Anderson among many others
Merrill Kelly
Tejay Antone (yeah I fudged a bit on the last one, but I’ll live with it)

Roh-bare or Rah-ber-t?

Eovaldi for Giolito at the deadline. Who says “no?” How much salary would the other team need to eat to get to “yes”?
ButchAdams79
Eovaldi should be extended. Lorenzo, scherzer, and Heaney should be traded
westex87
Are you high? You don’t think Eovaldi would bring back a legitimate prospect and would only bring back an injured starter?
Texas Outlaw
Id rather extend Eovaldi too. Trading the other 3 might bring you back a mid level prospect.
ButchAdams79
I’m not worried about what eovaldi brings back. I’m looking at him as our best starter last 2yrs, I’m looking at fact he’s from here and pitched well here and would probably be open to extension. I’m looking at his age and thinking he’s got a good 3+ yrs left in him. And then I look at scherzer and see a 40 yo old pitcher on expiring contract that’s been hurt most of year but pitched well enough so far and has 2 more starts by deadline to have some value and a savings on payroll if nothing else bc they showed in off-season, they’re tapped

Texas is going nowhere this year. Giolito has two more years under control, at lower cost than Eovaldi. Seems like a good move for the future, unless Eovaldi can be extended.
Sox could use Eovaldi this year, and Giolito won’t be available.
One year of Eovaldi vs. two of Giolito? Maybe the Sox eat some salary?
Susannah
Giolito is signed through 2025. He will not be available until June at the earliest if he can comeback from UCL surgery. An expensive 2 year deal for the Red Sox. I am sure that he can be traded for Anthony Rendon or Kris Bryant. They can help this year and beyond. 😉
Dorothy_Mantooth
Actually, the Giolito deal is technically a one year deal for 2024 with a player option for 2025. Since he is out for the year and coming off of UCL brace surgery, it is widely expected that he will exercise his option but it is not 100% guaranteed that he will.
Susannah
Yes although it would be very unlikely Giolito and his agent will decline the option.

Trevor Hoffman? He is way past his time sir and a relief pitcher.

Which Trevor do you speak of? On BR, I search Trevor and it gives me 24 MLB players, 100+ Minor League Players and 100+ Other Players, Scouts, and College.
Please be more specific.

Daniel Robert’s call-up to the Rangers is a testament to his perseverance and hard work in the minors. Here’s hoping he brings that stellar Triple-A form to the big leagues and helps bolster Texas’ bullpen down the stretch!

If a deal can be made for cash or a very low level prospect, Antoine Kelly would be a great fit in Boston. Andrew Bailey and his team do a great job of reigning in pitcher wildness and concentrating on throwing strikes. What Bailey has done with this year’s starters is amazing when it comes to BB/9. I don’t have the stats but I’m willing to bet that Boston is in the Top 3 in MLB when it comes to the lowest BB/9. The only problem is that they would need to bump someone off of the 40-man roster and with Casas coming off of the 60 day IL soon, that would require them to open two spots on the 40-man if they want to add Kelly to the roster as well.

Next Up = Robert Daniel !!

I know Kelly has been awful this year but DFAing a relief prospect that had a 2 ERA and like 79 K’s in 54 innings last year for a 29 year old minor league lifer is insane to me.
