The Pirates announced a series of roster moves this morning, headlined by the club placing left-hander Bailey Falter on the 15-day Injured List. The club selected right-hander Brent Honeywell Jr. to take Falter’s spot on the active roster, and designated left-hander Justin Bruihl for assignment to clear space on the 40-man roster for Honeywell. The club also activated catcher Henry Davis from the IL and optioned him to Triple-A.
Falter, 27, was removed from his start against the Mets yesterday after just two innings of work. As noted by Alex Stumpf of MLB.com, the club announced that lefty had been removed from the game due to left posterior arm discomfort. Falter was considered day-to-day after the game and received treatment from the club’s medical staff. The hurler seemed unfazed by the injury following the game, telling reporters (including Stumpf) that he wasn’t concerned and that they’d know more about the issue today.
It’s still not entirely clear how serious the injury is or how long Falter will be out, but the club will at least be without the southpaw for the next 15 days. That’s a significant blow to the Pirates’ rotation as Falter has provided steady back-of-the-rotation production for the club this year with a 4.08 ERA (100 ERA+) and 4.48 FIP in 90 1/3 innings of work this year. That loss becomes all the more significant given the club’s placement of right-hander Jared Jones on the shelf earlier this week due to a right lat strain, leaving the Pirates with just Paul Skenes, Mitch Keller, and Martin Perez as healthy members of their regular starting rotation.
Right-hander Luis Ortiz is scheduled to make his second start of the year later today in Jones’s stead, but to replace Falter in the rotation it seems likely the club would have to dip into their minor league depth. Right-hander Braxton Ashcraft is one of the club’s top pitching prospects and is already on the 40-man roster, but only just recently came off the minor league IL and may not be ready for a promotion to the majors. That could leave Pittsburgh to turn to a non-roster veteran such as Jake Woodford or Domingo German in search of innings.
In the meantime, the club will turn to Honeywell in order to deepen their bullpen mix. The 29-year-old righty signed a minor league deal with Pittsburgh back in February and is best known for his time in the Rays system as a top prospect. A lengthy series of injuries that included Tommy John surgery and multiple elbow fractures left Honeywell to pitch just 103 1/3 innings in professional games from 2018 to 2022, but the righty nonetheless managed to make to the majors last year with the Padres. He posted a decent 4.05 ERA in 46 2/3 innings of work with the club but was pushed off the roster down the stretch last summer and ended up with the White Sox, with whom he was lit up for seven runs in just 5 2/3 innings of work.
In Triple-A with the Pirates this year, Honeywell has a 4.85 ERA in 39 innings of work with a 19.6% strikeout rate and a 10.1% walk rate. Making room for Honeywell on the 40-man roster is Bruihl, who the club signed to a major league deal last month. The lefty enjoyed some success with the Dodgers early in his career, pitching to a 3.65 ERA and 4.47 FIP in 65 appearances for the club from 2021 to 2023. Bruihl found himself shipped to Colorado at the trade deadline last year, however, and was lit up for seven runs (six earned) in 3 2/3 innings of work for the Rockies. The lefty struggled similarly during his time with Pittsburgh, posting a 9.53 ERA across seven appearances in a Pirates uniform.
Meanwhile, Davis is set to head back to the minors after being placed on the concussion IL last month. Joey Bart returned from the injured list at the end of June and reclaimed his spot alongside veteran Yasmani Grandal in the club’s catching tandem, leaving no room for the first overall selection of the 2021 draft in Pittsburgh’s catching mix. He’ll look to get regular reps behind the plate in Triple-A, although he clearly has nothing left to prove offensively in the minors given his career .336/.472/.629 slash line at the level.

Where did he fit. Keller Perez Skenes Falter. Jones Gonzales coming back. Ortiz. That was 3 starters for 1 spot. Ashcraft Priester are waiting.
Goku the Knowledgable One
Huh?
Falter, Gonzalez, Jones & Priester are all currently hurt for multiple weeks
They don’t even have a 5th starter rostered as of today
YourDreamGM
Falter will see. Gonzales working back soon. Jones can come back if needed hopefully. If not he is done for next year as well. Priester who cares.
All I care about is Skenes Keller and maybe Perez. It’s trade deadline. Get whatever you need.
rodneyave
Typical pirates move. Ashcraft can help this team right now, but bring up a has been in Honeywell.
holecamels35
They have to start making moves with some urgency, their season is in the balance if their rotation and whole team starts to struggle, Quit bringing up these career minor leaguers who give you no chance. Not like he has to be up here all season long.
Buccoprojectory
I agree with you. Calling up this journeyman sends bad vibes ti pirate fans. Ashcroft would be the sensible call. But knowing nutroll Nutting, he’s only thinking of the 6 year crap on these young guys.
holecamels35
I’ve been laying off the hate for Nutting the past few years. For the most part, he’s done what’s needed to be done in terms of paying key players, the issue is there weren’t many guys worth paying and it’s simply unreasonable to expect them to sign Cole when he clearly wanted to be elsewhere and would command 300M. No owner will want to waste money on a team.
I think Cherington needs to step up and quit with the dumpster diving BS and get some more real talent. It’s tough to tell if he actually wanted to sign/trade for expensive players and was told no, but I don’t think so.
Now, the one capital they do have is young talent and a bit of payroll flexibility so they should make a few moves to make the team better this year and next.
TheMan 3
they can start making changes by kicking Andy Haines to the unemployment line at the break
This team ranks at the bottom of the league in runs scored
You will only go so far with elite pitching
User 1404051815
I have to begin by saying it’s nothing personal. You’re a Pirates fan and that’s ok with me
But your “season is in the balance” comment is laughable. Simply put, they can’t hit. And they won’t spend the kind of money that would bring a couple big sticks here to augment the few impact players they have
Add to this the fact they have little to trade when there are 18-20 teams still “in it”
I’m hoping they do nothing between now and October. Let Ashcraft, Bubba, Harrison and others mature on the farm. Hope that Termarr comes alive.
And have some type of epiphany that tells them they need to spend in free agency to bring a couple legitimate bats here
Until then, it’ll be the same story. This team as built simply cannot contend
TheMan 3
I agree with Tired, trading what little they have to finish at .500 isn’t worth losing potential talent.
This team needs far more than just a few impact players
Current players that were being counted on offensively have regressed. One is Hayes
Triolo and Jack have also regressed
They were counting on having 2 catchers who could hit and one is out for the season and the other is struggling to find his way back from last year
They essentially have far too many holes to fill to become serious contenders this year. They’re better off waiting ( again) until next year to make this team better
holecamels35
The vast majority of free agents are flawed and risky players. You can get someone to help your team or a tremendous bust, but at least you don’t lose prospects, just money. Selling or standing pat is just kicking the can down the road, and increases risk IMO. Tough to believe Reynolds will be better than he is this year. No prospects or major leaguers are guarantees, especially pitchers, so when you have something, you should take advantage. The Marlins had a mountain of pitching talent and lost nearly all of it in one season. They traded for and signed impact bats that did nothing (Garcia, Soler to a lesser extent), and when that happens, these teams are forced to rebuild again, they can’t keep going like the Padres and Dodgers.
I also don’t buy they don’t have the prospects to make trades. People really overestimate what it actually takes to trade for players. Arraez was traded for very little, Padres in general traded for an entire team and still have a good farm. I’d be shocked to see any team’s top 3 prospects dealt this deadline.
TheMan 3
The Padres have a good player development system, the Bucs don’t
Name the last player drafted recently who became a superstar or even just an all star.
The Bucs have had low or top ten draft picks for quite a few years and still can’t develop them into every day players.
Hayes was drafted and he’s having a horrible season
The jury is still out on Gonzalez but he could become a really good player
Most of the players currently playing every game originated from other organizations
User 1404051815
Your first line shoots a hole in your entire argument, hole. The idea here was to emulate TB. They drafted poorly and developed even worse. The minors are threadbare. Look at the stats
The Rays perfected the strategy. The Orioles did well with it. The Brewers and teams like the Royals have gone this route, had the same pockmarks that the Pirates have thanks to prospects not progressing and have addressed them with signings or trades for bigger names
The Pirates won’t
This team was never going to seriously contend. Now with Jones going down for a month, it’s even more problematic
Their minor league system is rife with pitching and middle infielders. What do you think they’ll bring back at this juncture?
Meanwhile, teams out of it are looking to rebuild by dumping salaries and guys like Josh Bell. I mean, they’re a big reason their teams are out of it to begin with
You’re suggesting putting a butterfly bandage on a knife wound
I respect your postings here. You always see the upside and I walk the ledge in trying to be clear that I’m not trolling you or something
But this team will continue to run in place and hover somewhere between 75-80 wins for the foreseeable future because it won’t go the distance
TheMan 3
Reynolds’ 2022 season was better than last season’s results so there’s no guarantee he won’t be better next year
And today he was chosen as a reserve player for the AS game
TheMan 3
by flawed free agents, you mean Rowdy Tellez, Michael A Taylor and Arnoldis Chapman?
All signed with the Bucs as free agents and only Tellez has made any impact and even that didn’t happen until a month ago
These are the lower tier free agents Cherington has been signing. It won’t change much next year either
holecamels35
I just do not want to see them regress and end up doing another rebuild and waste the careers of players like Skenes/Jones/Reynolds. I agree with all of your points here, I would just like to see the team stay afloat and be in the playoff hunt until the final week of the season, that was all I wanted from this year.
At this point, I totally ignore free agency because I just feel like the Pirates will never be players in it. The risk of signing big ticket guys who fall on their face (Snell, Monty) excludes them but I suppose they can sign middle tier guys, but like you said, they live and die by their player development. Getting good cheap years out of Davis, Suwinksi, Cruz (who’s swinging a powerful bat) etc will be worth more than any free agent.
Appreciate you staying classy as I try to discuss this stuff on facebook posts and it’s just a mess. Same crap, oh this team sucks, owner is cheap, Skenes to the Yankees in 2 years, it’s so tiresome.
TheMan 3
I completely understand your concern, holecamels35 but Cherington recently said that he would prefer the current players become better the next half season and doesn’t really want to make any trades
If Cruz is swinging such a hot bat why is he batting below .250 and has 107 strikeouts in 81 games that he’s played in?
People get excited about his raw power and while he has it, he doesn’t make contact enough for that power to be useful
Over a 162 game season he’s on pace to strikeout 214 times. That’s hardly a reflection of a hot bat
All of that said, I agree that they should try and make this team better, I just don’t see them trading for a player that can lead us into the promised land
User 1404051815
Agree with your thinking but I believe Nutting is a businessman first and foremost. I simply don’t believe he’ll ever open the purse strings even though it’s obvious to everyone that they need a power hitting corner outfielder and a good 1st baseman
Again, that really solves most of the issues here
But they’ll opt for more Tellez and Taylor types of signings. They’ll aim to “compete” knowing full well that it’s a buzzword to a segment of the fanbase while being fully aware that competing now means a .500 record
Cherington is again spewing PR. I’d say he’s been a complete and utter failure here but I don’t know what financial limitations he works under. Still, his scouts are among the worst and if it’s possible, his player development people are a step down from there. And he has a manager in place who wants to be buddies with his players. Jogging to 1st. Lobbing balls back to the pitcher, myriad other instances, it’s comical
Watch the young Orioles if you haven’t had a chance. Small market. Most of their kids came through their farm. Play with passion and fire. A manager who is on the ball. Then tell me about changing my tune and jumping on the Pirates bandwagon (Sorry, I’m alluding to a contrarian here)
Lastly, someone needs to reach Cruz ASAP. With so many Latin players, this team could have used a Joe Espada to manage and connect with guys like Cruz. His focus defensively is poor. His approach at bat, worse. And his lack of hustle is disturbing
I compare him to Gregory Polanco, a kid I had high hopes for. But I don’t remember Polanco ever dogging it
Like Dream says, in the Pirates mindsets, the rebuild is over. Unfortunately, it’s missing a great many bricks and two by fours
baseballer
8 save attempts with 7 saves this year? Has been? Honeywell had a 2 in spring. It’s surprising he didn’t make the team out of camp. I think he will be a good asset.
TheMan 3
facing minor league batters isn’t the same as facing major leaguers
Example
Priester has always been an effective pitcher at Indy. He can’t survive pitching into the 5th inning without getting shelled first
baseballer
My point exactly. If you look at the 1st half of Honeywell last year he pitched in the bigs with a 3. Then threw every 7-10 days out of the pen and numbers changed. Pen guys have to throw. As well as starters. Which is why they throw pens on the 3rd day before they pitch on the 5th. Heller for example. AAA shoving. Called up tagged. Trust me. I’m well aware.
TheMan 3
I don’t know you, so automatically I can’t trust anyone who says “ trust me “
But using your logic about what players did last year, why isn’t Hayes, Jack or Triolo repeating what they did last year?
YourDreamGM
I think I been around long enough to know what’s what. I’m proud to be part of AAG. I trust them. And I think you should too.

Highly suggest subscribing to milb, at the least watching some milb games before making such comments.
There are some guys at AA/AAA who are VERY good and not at the mlb level only because they are blocked.
TheMan 3
I don’t need to subscribe to anything, I have been a devout Pirate and base all fan since 1966 and have watched every level live and on television
Maybe there’s players in other league teams who are being blocked from being promoted, that team isn’t Pittsburgh

User 1404051815
I agree with your points about minor leaguers, John. Systems like LA’s, Atlanta’s, Baltimore’s and Houston’s are deep with talent that’s blocked from coming to the big show
Problem for the Pirates is, no true contending team has a stupid or generous GM calling the shots. They want front liners in return, guys who can help them win now
So who do you trade that can help that kind of team? Reynolds? Keller? That would be suicidal for this franchise
TheMan 3
Yeah his 4.85 era will make him a true superstar in the majors
alwaysgo4two
Ashcraft just got off the IL yesterday. I’m pretty sure that they view him as a starter. Only has 18 innings. Needs more time.
User 1404051815
And why rush any young pitcher here? Why? This team is going nowhere. And unfortunately, they have no impact players on the horizon who can be the cavalry coming over the hill
TheMan 3

@theman umm, you will change your tune soon. I will be waiting to watch you and others jump back on the wagon again

We all remember the first time Cutch was here and those teams. I go back to Bonds, Bonilla, Van Slyke. And before that Stargell, Matlock, Parker. And before that Clemente, Stargell, Robertson, Oliver….
So let me ask you: what do you see here that reflects anyone changing their tune? I mean, we *want* the team to excel but I see nothing to get excited over
Please explain what I’m missing unless the bandwagon is for fans of a .500 team
I’m a lifelong yinzer. A diehard fan. I won’t apologize for being a critic of this train wreck that ownership is pushing here
They have pieces here. Nothing more. They could add to the pieces but refuse, unless Tellez and Taylor-types are something special to you
But explain, and do more than providing love for Skenes, Keller and Jones. We all see them as the upside here.
TheMan 3
If this team excelled at something other than striking out, I would already be on the bandwagon
But they reached double digits again today while only managing 6 hits; all singles
Apparently you, like so many others who post comments here are fine with mediocrity.
I apologize, I am not content with that level of baseball
User 1404051815
Today was one of their uglier losses
I keep hearing Mendoza in my mind, talking about how they needed to sign another closer
But $10m for Chapman still is mind boggling
He’s beyond erratic and often more concerned with staring down opposing batters than buckling down and throwing strikes
Meanwhile, if anyone watched Cruz’s AB’s today they have to wonder how he gets so much hype. They all had bad AB’s save for Hayes—a nice change—but jeez, his approach and understanding of both the strike zone and situations is something I wouldn’t find in Legion ball
TheMan 3
Cruz has managed to strike out 107 times in 81 games he’s played in
over the course of a 162 game season, that’s 214 strikeouts
If Cruz was the second coming of Dave Kingman and actually hit 40-45 homers in a season, that number could be acceptable
TheMan 3
When Chapman takes the mound in a save situation, my mind always goes back to the days of closer Mitch Williams
Mitch made each of his appearances nail biting
and kept me on the edge of my seat
mlb1225
Ashcraft just got activated from the injured list yesterday. They probably want him to get another start or two in before promoting him. But if it weren’t for that injury, he may have been ghe guy to get the call.

Wether he is MLB caliber or not.
rodneyave
I don’t disagree with you,but feel good stories don’t win games. Ashcraft helps this team now. Let’s see what he has. We know what Honeywell offers. His success in spring training and AAA has not translated to MLB. Ashcraft allows Ortiz to continue to be used in long relief and a spot start here and there.
Sideline Redwine
from reading the board, it appears pirates fans think they will win it this year, so no need for players that will not win it all now. interesting.
TheMan 3
I haven’t read one comment that says that the Bucs will win it this year

Looks like the Pirates are swapping out pitchers like a kid trading baseball cards—hope Honeywell Jr. brings some ‘sweet’ relief to the bullpen!
mlb1225
Ashcraft just got activated from the injured list yesterday, so they probably want him to start a game, maybe two before calling him up. Honeywell is just here to take Daulton Jerffries’ low-leverage role. He may not even make it to the All-Star break still on the Pirates’ 40-man roster. The Pirates also don’t need a SP until Falter’s spot comes up again. They’ll probably activate Marco Gonzales from the 60-day within the next week or two, and Honeywell will probably get the boot.
TheMan 3
and it still won’t matter because they can’t score enough runs to beat the opposing teams
YourDreamGM
“The Pirates also don’t need a SP until Falter’s spot comes up again.” Interesting. So what you are saying is that Falter is a starter therefore he is in the rotation. Therefore he won’t have to be replaced until it would be his turn in the rotation! Wow. Mind blown! Simply amazing! Did you come up with that all on your own? If so well done. Thanks for educating all us dum dums.

Lets play who said it better!
Article author Mr Deeds “Right-hander Braxton Ashcraft is one of the club’s top pitching prospects and is already on the 40-man roster, but only just recently came off the minor league IL and may not be ready for a promotion to the majors.”

Mendoza Line 215
Dream,or Primate-Honeywell cannot close because according to Tired you only need one closer.
User 1404051815
I guess I’d ask you this. In those last couple years where Bednar had 30+ saves, how many other closers did they have?
In fact, I can go back to Dave Giusti , or Teke or even The Mad Hungarian, Bruce Sutter, Rollie Fingers, Goose Gossage or Lee Smith and ask the same
For this team, it’s a luxury they didn’t need and couldn’t afford. That’s all

Hayes leads off bottom of second, reaches on error, advances to second on a wild pitch and never scores.
Because this team only plays the worst in baseball
Olivares pops up in the infield, Triolo hits a liner for an out and Bart strikes out without ever taking the bat off his shoulder
Sideline Redwine
maybe if he switched to all caps he could be more effective as a manager.
TheMan 3
right handed hitters are batting .172 against this Mets pitcher and .274 from the left side
Maybe Shelton shouldn’t have 9 batters in the lineup batting right handed
mlb1225
Tellez is batting below .100 against lefties this year. Idk if that’s the guy you want to face a lefty, regardless of how good/bad the pitcher is against lefties.
TheMan 3
Cutch isn’t much better this year against lefties yet he’s in the lineup and has struck out twice already
In fact, in 5 innings the righties only have 2 hits, both singles
Point being even batters who you would think would hit well against lefties, aren’t in this game
If Shelton wants to be competitive, he needs to take some chances
Apparently you’re happy with right handed batters not getting hits off of lefties
TheMan 3
did I mention Tellez? Olivares isn’t a regular yet he’s playing
Cruz and Jack have been known to hit lefties
I can see why Dream gives you his number often
YourDreamGM
Only because he has me muted and can’t see what I say. Otherwise I am a pretty nice person and would usually just ignore the fact that all he does is copy paste what the mlbtr writers said in their article and captain obvious statements.
*I can see why Dream gives you his number often” I really hope this doesn’t inspire him to unmute me to see what I am saying. It’s much more entertaining to make fun of him then have to try and actually talk baseball with him.

TheMan 3
my apologies, Dream, I wasn’t aware that he had muted you

It’s ok Paul. I don’t remember ever absolutely destroying him. I seen maybe you and definitely Tom talk to him much more harsh than I ever did. I believe he just can’t handle having someone of super intelligence and baseball knowledge in his pond. So he muted the big fish. He should have muted a lot more people. Him and Piratesfan1981 could have become besties.
If anything I gave him the greatest compliment he could receive. He could never be more intelligent than I am but I told him of all the man animals he was the smartest. He was the only one capable of seeing the Jack Joe All star.
It’s been all down hill since then though. Sad story. Those Custards (mlbtr doesn’t allow the b word that rhymes with that) got their dirty paws on him and lobotomized him. He’s now one of the 5 weakest members of mlbtr.

YourDreamGM
I made a lot of great calls. But choosing primate1225 as my assistant dream gm might have been my best one ever.
TheMan 3
today’s loss can be attributed to two factors
An offense’ inability to get enough hits to score runs in the first 7 innings and a manager who can’t see the forest from the trees deciding to allow the closer to throw more than 30 pitches in his lone inning
It was obvious Chapman was throwing far too many pitches by the time he had scored an out, Shelton should have had someone warming up in the bullpen to replace Chapman to save the win
But then again when your offense only manages 6 singles, you’re lucky to have scored any runs at all
User 1404051815
The Mets have a nice pitching staff but a number of the Pirates ABs were among the worst I’ve seen. Granted, the umpiring was horrific, but who watches a game like this and says just wait, you’ll be jumping back in the bandwagon soon?

If it’s so difficult to bunt 97 then maybe not do it vs someone who throws 97? What if they throw 98 99 100… Is 96 not difficult? Please elaborate more Mr Young. How about a guy with a breaking ball that moves 2 feet?
User 1404051815
Exactly, Dream
Jeez. You’re really coming around
His defense of the inability to swing was hilarious. Somewhere, a group of fans is embracing that rationale. “Well he CAN’T bunt. The guy is throwing 97”
Yeah. KY. Walker. Block. Wehner. Even Walk, anymore. “Don’t believe what you see, gang.”
Capps is about the only truth teller they have
YourDreamGM
I’m not coming around. I never moved. Just call it like I see it. Taylor was a glove only guy with a declining glove because of declining speed. I said the 20 hrs was a fluke. His hitting including strike outs is just as I expected. I think I even said my grumpy old friends ain’t going to like all these strike outs. Only thing I liked was the price as other teams paid 10 million for the same player type.
User 1404051815
Inability to bunt. Sorry
User 1404051815
I was referring to the Inability to bunt comment
That’s the broadcast idea of the 21st century: sell tickets. Don’t rag on players
Grew up with Gowdy and Kubek. Kiner and McCarver. Then there was Jon Miller and Joe Morgan.
Doesn’t matter if it’s national or local, it’s the same approach. No critique, just propaganda. And needless drivel about golf games or who’s picking up the dinner check
They say, “Well, if you can do better…”
Truth is, as a broadcaster or writer, I can. And it’s not even close
YourDreamGM
Generally I never want to see a bunt. Numbers say don’t do it. And players today can’t. If someone has the ability and in certain situations sure.
How about getting a real cf who can hit?
Mendoza Line 215
Tired- I have to reply to your comment on Chapman down here because this site hides replies.
I was too surprised at how much they had to spend on him but as I have said before and others before me the Pirates have to overpay to get quality players. This is the money that they planned to spend on a starter but got two deals instead.
I know that you do not like him but he has the most strikeouts EVER for a left handed reliever so he must have done something right.
I still say that any decent to good team needs a second closer when the first will be overworked or injured. The alternative is Dennis Santana.
Paul is right- he reminds us of Mitch Williams. His performances are like a box of chocolates. And shame on Shelton if he did not have someone else ready because of that.
But he was the only choice that Shelton had to start the ninth.
User 1404051815
Mendoza, I wrote this as a reply above but in case you missed it….
That’s all
TheMan 3
Elroy Face was a closer and an effective one with his signature forkball
He has 193 saves in his career with the Bucs and holds the major league record for highest winning percentage .947 when he won 18 games with 1 loss as a reliever with the Pirates and he also had 10 saves that season
Mendoza Line 215
Last year Bednar lost two games to the Braves when he was overworked.
Overwork sometimes equals arm injuries, and the Pirates are deathly afraid to overwork anyone.
The Pirates did not have a winnng record last year.
They are supposedly trying to have one this year.
You are living in the past.
All of those pitchers played when you and I were young men and that is more than a few years ago.
Bednar got hurt this year Hopefully it does not last.
I give credit to BC in realizing that he needed someone else.
YourDreamGM
I do find it both sad and strange that most have given up on this season. 4.5 games back isn’t that bad. Only 2 loses back. They have the most in demand most expensive thing to buy, pitching. I really think all the years of losing and hearing the same thing from management has effected fans mindset. This should be the year. Most of you do think there is hitting help coming. There is pitching help but it isn’t much better than Falter Perez Gonzales Ortiz Ashcraft who are here now! Not even close to being Skenes Jones Keller. Nutting is opening up the spending. There is nothing better happening in 2025. No better time to contend than right now. Next year on paper will be exactly the same. On difference is health. Right now Skenes Jones Keller don’t need surgery. Reynolds Gonzales Cutch aren’t on the IL. Next year who knows?
I’m supposed to be your dream gm. You should be wishing I was running things and fighting to get your team into the playoffs. You have a all star LF I would go out and get you a all star CF and RF to go with him. Heck a sweep of the Brewers or even just a good two weeks vs other teams and we are pushing to win the division. If the renegade was healthy today then they could be 3.5 or only 1 lose out of wild card.
User 1404051815
You’re either flip flopping or playing devils advocate for effect here, Dream. In reading your posts over the past couple threads, you were pretty much on the same page about this season
The NL has a lot of generally bad or average teams still in the hunt. The Pirates can’t hit but are one of them. It’s not that I’ve given up but the reality is what it is.
I get the idea that any team in the playoffs is dangerous in a short series. Maybe that’s the bandstand that one guy here thinks I’ll be jumping on and subsequently changing my tune
Not likely.
Give me the Pirates of 12 or 13 years ago, sure
As you’ll remember, those were wild card teams
I responded about Chapman above, Mendoza
YourDreamGM
I don’t think so. I been seeing a playoff chance all season long. If Cherington doesn’t go for it he needs to be replaced. Just like Boston did when they brought in Dave and won the world series.
TheMan 3
Making the playoffs is one thing, not advancing is another and this team doesn’t have the talent to take them to another level
Unless the current bit players go on an offensive trajectory going beyond the first round of the playoffs is a pipe dream
One traded for player won’t be enough, there’s too many holes to fill
YourDreamGM
Analytics likes their chances to win playoff series.
TheMan 3
Cherington and Shelton use analytics. They haven’t helped much
YourDreamGM
I know what you’re thinking. I thought what you thought. Some things are just too good to be true. Just like you I thought analytics had to have some kind of catch. Just a way for the banks to get your house right? Well then I did some homework. And I found out it’s not any of that. It’s not another way for the bank to get your house. And it’s also not too good to be true. Analytics is a simple idea really. You turn your players equity into cash and you pay it back by investing it into better areas. Most people use the money to find better prospects, make trades, sign free agents or even upgrade their facilities. And just as importantly you still own your team. And you make no monthly mortgage payments!
Mendoza Line 215
Tired- Dream does not flip flop.
He does change his tune,however.
YourDreamGM
Let me go get Winker so you can have a all star in RF to go with the one you have in LF
YourDreamGM
Billy Beane I believe or someone who likes giving fancy quotes said something like this. that baseball seasons are broken down into 3 parts. The 1st third of the season is to find out what you have. The 2nd third is to get what you need. The final third is when you play with the team that you want to play with. 2 entire months of playing with the team you want that is built to win.
YourDreamGM
Here are some actually quotes I googled of his allegedly. These seem like standard stuff and nothing super original so don’t know if he said them or it’s something he would say. Website said they are his but i dunno. Anyways good quotes.
“The ability to change is the capacity to succeed” Winker Joe is a all star
“Big dreams require big actions.” That’s what I am saying.
“Don’t be afraid to challenge the status quo, even if it means going against popular opinion.” I like that one
“Success is not about the resources you have, but how resourceful you can be.” Cherington Nutting I bet are fans of this one.
“The world is filled with smart people, but it’s the ones who are willing to work the hardest that will succeed.”
“Empower Your Mind Anywhere Anytime.”
“Failure is not the end, but rather a stepping stone towards success.”
“Never underestimate the power of data and analytics.” I might have to use this one!
“Innovation is born out of necessity and the willingness to take risks.”
“You don’t have to follow the traditional path to achieve greatness.”
“Vision without execution is just a hallucination.” Someone needs to tell Cherington this.
“True leadership is about empowering others to reach their full potential.”
“Surround yourself with people who are smarter than you, and learn from them.” The pep boys have this one figured out.
“The only way to find out if something works is to give it a try.”
“You can’t control the outcome, but you can control your effort and attitude.”
“Success is not about being lucky, but rather being prepared for when the opportunity arises.”
YourDreamGM
These have to be Billy originals. But it is the internet. Don’t read unless killing time but some good ones imo.
“Smaller markets teams, when you hit bottom, you hit with a thud.”
“Why do people care about anything we do? We play in a crappy stadium, in a market that we share with another team, with one of the lowest payrolls in the game. Really, I’m not that interesting.” I appreciate brutal honesty.
‘In baseball, you can do something poorly and still get credit. A pitcher could throw a bad ball, the batter hit a screaming line drive, and an outfielder make a fantastic diving catch. Yet, when you look at historical databases, 80% of the time when a ball is struck with that trajectory and velocity, it is a hit.” Stuff like this got me into analytics.
“We try to create a situation where we’re the casino. It’s like how an actuary would set insurance rates. Predictability, predictability, predictability. What’s the path to least risk? What’s the greater chance of getting some return on this asset?” Into Cheringtons and any gms mindset.
“We’ve got to use every piece of data and piece of information, and hopefully that will help us be accurate with our player evaluation. For us, that’s our life blood.” How I feel.
“The math works. Over the course of a season, there’s some predictability to baseball. When you play 162 games, you eliminate a lot of random outcomes. There’s so much data that you can predict: individual players’ performances and also the odds that certain strategies will pay off.”
“I don’t want a lot of guys like me who played the game. Quite frankly, I want blank canvases; I want people to come in with new ideas. I don’t want the biases of their own experiences to be a part of their decision-making process.”
“When I first came into baseball, people didn’t want to hear that a team was a business. But it is. And the better the business is run, the healthier the team on the field is going to be.” Bob likes this one!
User 1404051815
Ah yes, the great thinkers. Kafka. Plato. Billy Beane.
I was going to post a number of Yogi Berra quotes to offset this entry but I figured I’d allow you to introduce Beane as the great baseball pontificator of his time to Pittsburgh audiences.
TheMan 3
One day long after he’s gone as the Pirates hitting coach there will be quotes available that Haines will explain how he was such a failure in his position with both the Pirates and Brewers

First off I replied to you in the previous article about extra $ no boss side hustles so just making sure you seen it and didn’t think I was ignoring you. I could probably come up with more ideas but you know how my mind works. I just brainstormed and rambled off as many things that popped up as fast as I could.
For a small fee $30 bucks a year? Somewhere around there, you get to be a mlbtr PREMIUM member. You get access to additional articles only for members. A weekly chat. And that little tr badge. It also removes advertisements. And it helps support their writer’s.
I know. It sounds too good to be true. But it’s not some way to steal your home. It’s just a premium membership like any other.
Tell them dream gm sent you and you will receive a 0 percent discount.

YourDreamGM
My favorite Cherington quotes. All from the last fews days and weeks.
“I still believe that there are players on this team that not only are capable of it, but are going to have better second halves than first halves. I believe that.” I bet Paul is foaming at the mouth like a rapid dog in anticipation of Jacks Joes Taylors Grandpals Triolos 2nd half!!!!
“I still believe we have players that are capable of more. I’ll continue to say that because I believe in them. We’ll continue to focus energy internally, as far as how we can continue to get better.”
“We have more players that can improve by far than the number we can acquire,”
“If we believe in those players, then we got to sell out to that belief and believe that the time that they’re getting in the major leagues,” Cherington said, “the development, experience they’re getting is going to pay off.”
“We need to sell out to that because, again, the numbers say that if that group improves as a group,” Cherington said, “it’s still going to make a bigger impact than any single external acquisition we can make.”
“If we’re in it at the end and pushing into the postseason, it is most likely because we’re a really good run prevention team, and we can win close, low-scoring games,” Cherington said. “That’s probably how we’re going to do it.”
“We just think about the math. How do you get better? How does that all add up? The opportunity to get better — for every team, not just for the Pirates, but for every team — is always going to come more through the players you already have than players you might be able to get.”
“We are relying on young players, and we’re always going to do that here in Pittsburgh,” Cherington said. “That’s really important. We embrace that. It’s exciting. It’s a part of what we’re going to be as a team.”
The coaching staff needs to get as much out of the lineup as possible: “Being very intentional, urgent about the strategies, the coaching strategies, the interventions necessary to help players get better,” Cherington said. “Believe in the power of the total group to get better over the course of the second half of the season. … That’s the way we’re going to think. There’s a way forward. It can be better, and we need to sell out to that because the numbers say that if that group improves, it’s still going to make a bigger impact than any single external acquisition we can make.”
To be fair he said the standard stuff he always said. Have to be open to improving the team any way we can. Prepared to trade for a player to help us in future years. Won’t shut door on requiring a rental.
But a lot of quotes left the door open for him to do exactly what pirates fans want him to do. Kick that can down the road to 2025. Keep our amazing prospects. Skenes Jones won’t have innings limits. Nutting will open up the wallet. That does sound like a beautiful world.
TheMan 3
I gather from the quotes you provided is Ben prefers to not making a trade to improve the game because he ( while living in fantasyland ) expects the current players to turn it on and have career years in the second half
YourDreamGM
What if…. When Falter said he was exhausted the Pirates skipped a start or two? How bad does a pitcher have to feel to say that? Would he still have got hurt after the rest? Or was that his body warning him something is wrong and it needs rest? Food for thought. I’m calling it a day.
panj341
Did anyone notice Hayes not running hard to first and then turning left after crossing the bag? Just luck getting back to the bag.
Two reasons to be benched, Billy Martin would have sit his lazy a**.
TheMan 3
That hasn’t been unusual with these players this year, panj341
Remember when Tellez crushed the ball that hit the top of the center field wall and he just stood at home plate admiring what he thought was a homer?
It wasn’t and because he didn’t hustle out of the box he missed being on 3rd with a triple and instead got a double
There doesn’t appear to be any urgency with some of these guys, and discipline is even worse from Shelton
TheMan 3
Cruz often times doesn’t run out ground balls yet with his long legs he could probably beat the throw to first if he wasn’t such a spoiled brat and made a real effort
They ( management) baby him because on occasion he will hit the river with one swing of his bat
Mendoza Line 215
Pant- Hayes has generally just gone through the motions most of his career.
Chuck from Uniontown
Dippin back into the Honeywell
TheMan 3
Hayes, one of few players who didn’t strike out in yesterday’s game plus hit 2 singles and stole a base is sitting today in favor of Triolo
Shelton reminds me of a manager that really doesn’t want to win games
This is a team that is failing to score runs beyond a few every game yet the lineup looks like it was written by a rookie
In my opinion, Cruz strikes out too much to be in the #3 hole
Reynolds, arguably their best player hasn’t even scored 40 runs yet for the season. It’s indicative of the hitters’ inability to drive him in when he is in scoring position
YourDreamGM
Hayes .187 vs RHP. If trying to win it’s best he doesn’t start vs RHP. Should never sit vs LHP unless his back is bad but it shouldn’t be because there is plenty of RHP to bench him. Not that his replacement is better so vs RHP it doesn’t matter.
TheMan 3
Hayes got a single today against a right handed pitcher
YourDreamGM
He’s an all star!
TheMan 3
no hits or base runners after the first three innings, does that qualify for me to jump on the bandwagon?
Buccoprojectory
Pirates are wasting another sparkling pitching performance by keller. Pirates no hits through 4.
Pathetic coaching and managing. They will never win under the current MORON AND HIS COACHING STAFF. watching the MORON MANAGE IS like watching and listening to you KNOW WHO. Orange hemoglobin. Both losers
TheMan 3
So much for getting on the bandwagon, at least so far, but it doesn’t look very good since after 5 innings the Bucs only have one hit
Looks like they will be sellers at the deadline because if they lose today they will be 6 games under .500 and are highly unlikely to go on a 10 game winning streak
YourDreamGM
That will make Cherington happy. By his sound bites he is foaming at the mouth like a rapid dog to trade all these rentals off in a seller’s market. And I agree. Anything more than 3 or 4 games out of a wildcard they should sell. Over 5 absolutely. Still a ways to go though until deadline.
TheMan 3
The 5 run outburst was exactly what this team needed, now they must keep the Mets at bay and most importantly, let Keller pitch a complete game
YourDreamGM
Where’s bright eyes and rapid dog?
YourDreamGM
Since my closest friends don’t believe in analytics and are older Americans I have been studying how best to talk to them to help them understand the benefits of analytics. Analytics aren’t some way to steal your home. It’s a way to put tax free $ in your pocket right now!
User 1404051815
This next two series are huge for them
Split or less and the writing is on the wall
Sell what you can
I don’t put any stock in them playing the ChiSox after the Brewers and waltzing to a sweep or even 2 out of 3. This is the team that got swept by the A’s twice over the past two seasons
You miss the point about analytics.
It’s not that we don’t believe in them but rather, that they are given way too much importance
Put me and an analytics guy at field level, watching young players. I have my eyes. He has the iPad. I’m telling you that I’ll foretell a player’s potential and trajectory, his value, his positives and problems, much better than his analytics.
But believe what you want
And go watch “Trouble With the Curve”
TheMan 3
Trouble with the curve is yet another great baseball movie
TheMan 3
the teams that they should beat, often times they don’t
Much like the Steelers who tend to lose to teams that they should beat handily
YourDreamGM
A good fantasy movie. His computer could have easily told him the kid couldn’t hit the curve. Remember when even bright eyes figured out Gonzales struggled vs breaking pitches? If bright eyes can figure out a computer can. I’d take a Commodore 64 over bright eyes. That old man needed put out to pasture. Hardly anyone throws curve balls anymore and if they do it just a show me or get me a strike pitch. That old washed up scout wanted to pass up on a generational hitter because he couldn’t hit a pitch that nobody throws anymore. You just made a strong argument for analytics! Movie should have been called trouble with the slider!
User 1404051815
Curves, sliders, who cares? Spin pitches. Pitches that move. That was the point
Put anyone up against a straight fastball pitcher and sooner or later he’ll get the timing down.
And on the contrary, analytics nerds would no doubt have suggested that the smirking punk gets the attention after amassing all of the numbers, mashing similar pitchers and pitches over X amount of games
That’s the point. The old scout and his daughter knew better than the numbers
Cue Jim Bouton
YourDreamGM
And they must have had Andy Haines as their hitting coach. Trade him to the Rays or Dodgers and he will be crushing those curves. Well the 2 of them he sees a week.
Mendoza Line 215
Dream- I was using data analysis when you were in diapers.
Some of the analytics are more useful than others.
As an engineer the answers have to make sense.
But baseball is still played by people and the total use of analytics to make decisions is like saying my dog,or in your case my monkey, ate my paperwork when the analytics do not provide a successful solution.
YourDreamGM
I don’t rely solely on them for something important.
YourDreamGM
Uh oh just checked the score. They are back! Season is still on! Call the Nats! The Haines her way approach worked. Keep striking out to increase the starters pitch count and get to the bullpen!
TheMan 3
I give no credit to Haines for the 8 runs they scored today. Why? Because they don’t generate enough runs in other games to make a difference
Still a good all around game
YourDreamGM
So much for Suwinski being hot! 0 for 4! Shows what you know… Not much.
Mendoza Line 215
Suwinski is in a slump if he went 0 for 4.
User 1404051815
7 Phillies, 6 Dodgers to the All Star game. Overkill. How Keller isn’t there is ridiculous
I mean, today just proves it
Every so often, you see the young pieces come alive here and again, you say to yourself, wouldn’t it be wonderful to have a couple bombers around them in the lineup. Today it was Cruz and Gonzales. Maybe ownership will wake up someday
Have to say that if nothing else, Palacios sure injects some enthusiasm in that dugout
YourDreamGM
Who are kicking off for Keller?
3.48 era 96 strike outs so what pitcher is weaker? There might be one but I ain’t looking to see who.
User 1404051815
Not my call. But “all star” should take it all into account. Keller has 10 wins for a team that can’t hit. That should act as a trump card
TheMan 3
You failed to mention the 49 consecutive starts going at least 5 innings
The last pitcher to accomplish this was AJ Burnett between 2012 and 2013 also pitching for the Bucs
Keller should have been selected to the AS game
YourDreamGM
Name a replacement? What pitcher is worse than Keller that you are replacing? If you don’t have someone in mind you’re just talking out your as. It’s first half of 2024. They don’t give a crap about 49 starts going back to last year. Skenes didn’t even pitch last year. 10 starts! Take Keller over Skenes. That’s fair.
User 1404051815
So in contrast then, you can list how every pitcher on the all star roster is more deserving than Keller, who has 10 wins for a poor hitting team, right? Or are you just playing devil’s advocate again and talking out of your as?
YourDreamGM
Why would I need to do that? I never said he wasn’t worthy. You are the ones who said he should have been an all star. I just asked why? What worse pitcher made it? If you said Skenes because he only has 10 games I would have said that’s a fair argument. Skenes would have made it with 5 starts because of $$$$$. I haven’t even looked at the roster enough to even remember who made it. Just pointing out societal problem of yapping before researching. Nothing against you guys. Just look at the all star articles comments sections. Keller could have been snubbed. I have no idea. I thought you guys seen someone who was obviously not as good. I wanted to know who so I could take a look.
TheMan 3
Jeff Hoffman a reliever for the Phillies, only pitched in 37 innings but has an era of 1.21
Still s starter with 10 wins pitched in 115 innings and has 102 strikeouts is more worthy of the honor
YourDreamGM
There you go. A starter is more valuable than a reliever. No argument there. But…….
Now we can play devils advocate. If Bednar had a 1.21 era and didn’t make all star game would you be happy? Let’s put the shoe on the other foot.
Springer’s final thoughts. Starters are more valuable than relievers. But on a team you have 5 starters and 8 relievers. More relievers than starters. Should the all star game be made up of all starters? How many relievers should their be? What’s a healthy balance?
I appreciate your argument. But I mean it’s a 1.21 era! That’s pretty good is it not? I think I would go with Hoffman.
YourDreamGM
Lets say I agree with you. Starter over reliever. This starter Cristopher Sanchez has a under 3 era. This guy Jake Irvin has a under 3 era. Now if it was Mitch Scherzer or Mitch Verlander I might go Mitch. Mitch Keller I won’t. I will take the 2 something era guys. Need to find me 2 more all stars to remove.
YourDreamGM
This guy has a 1 something era as well and 18 saves Trevor Megill. Might be up to 3 players
YourDreamGM
Look. This isn’t my first rodeo. And let me tell you something. I wouldn’t be here if I thought snubbing Mitch Keller took advantage of any American senior. Or worse that it was some way to take your home. I just don’t believe be is an all star this year. Certainly not a tragic snub.
TheMan 3
Over 37 innings I think the comparison is unjustified
Hoffman only has 3 wins but also has 8 saves and it shouldn’t matter what the breakdown of starters vs relievers are, the selection process should be based upon the best pitchers
YourDreamGM
Fair enough. But I gave you 2 starters with much better eras. Doesn’t mean I think they are better pitchers than Keller but management was looking at April May June of 2024 and that’s it. And like I said Mitch Kershaw probably would have been an all star. Mitch Keller misses out.
YourDreamGM
Don’t just blindly trust me or anyone. But I believe you guys know I am a really neutral person and I think you might have your black and gold tinted glasses on for this one. Keller’s in the conversation and might make it as a replacement in the coming days. I think they got it right.
YourDreamGM
You believe best pitcher and no or extremely rare relievers. That’s fine but just isn’t how it works. You can choose your own all star team every year though.
YourDreamGM
Kellers been great recently. 10 wins. I think he has a strong chance of replacing someone if a spot or 2 opens up. They ain’t passing on a 1.21 reliever unless it’s for the other reliever with a 1 something era and 2 and a half times more saves.
TheMan 3
We both made our arguments and I respect yours but I never said Jack was hot so I couldn’t be wrong
User 1404051815
TheMan3, you got your little badge. Congrats
Dream tells me that when you get the badge, the air feels more pure, water tastes better and beautiful girls wink at you on the street
Is that true?
It’s funny, because Dream doesn’t have his little badge yet.
It’s either the badge or a few Mexican cigars for me
User 1404051815
Look Dream, TheMan3 will bear out that like him, I never considered Keller one of “the best” pitchers in MLB. He’s been inconsistent as recently as last year
But again, he’s 10-5 on a team that doesn’t support him much
“Keller should be in the All Star game” is a general blanket statement. I don’t have the time or enough beer to go through the stats of every NL player, nor do I care to dissect selections. The young man has had a helluva run so far this year. That’s all
YourDreamGM
Tom. You need to find someone to get you the Cubans.
Now I expect you to check in a few times a day while you are gone. I don’t care how hot the ladyboys are, you can take a 5 minute break once a day.
User 1404051815
Ladyboys? Jeez. Hahaha. If you only knew me back in the olden days. While you were lighting sparklers to impress the neighborhood kids, I’d be sidling up to your wife to ask her, “Come here often, baby?”
Aw, the good old days. When men were men. And women were glad they were
I’ll try to log on here. It’s my charm and obvious good looks. As Bill Murray said when asked to describe himself in Stripes, “Chicks dig me”
YourDreamGM
I don’t either lol. I just googled all star snubs and those pitchers names came up. And for what it’s worth Kellers did not. I am sure on Cards Mets sites they are saying Reynolds shouldn’t have made it. I think those arguments would be weak.
YourDreamGM
I wouldn’t judge. Going to Thailand and not spending a evening with a ladyboy is like going to Cuba and not smoking a cigar (no pun intended). What happens in Bangkok stays in Bangkok. They call it Bangkok for a reason.
YourDreamGM
RapidDog1981 “I came here to talk about Bailey Falter a week after the article was posted and dreams talking about Bangkok”
YourDreamGM
Going to Thailand isn’t cheap. But do you know with a reverse mortgage you could get $1,300 of tax free $ each month?
User 1404051815
Uh, I’m just going to say, I’ll take your word for it. Cough
Heres the problem with Cuban cigars: unless you go to Cuba, or know someone who did or lives there, you’re likely smoking a cigar that was rolled in the Dominican or Nicaragua.
Knock offs are common. And the labels—especially Cohiba—look exactly the same
Mendoza Line 215
Dream-For once I agree with you!
FWIW,I think that the selection process is now leaning to relievers since there is only one starter starting and the relievers are used to coming in.
Also, these starters who pitch just before the AS break will not be pitching in the game and a substitute will be chosen.
Maybe Keller gets in that way.
Several players usually get the shaft on selection anyway and always have and many are about equal and they cannot pick them all.
YourDreamGM
“For once I agree with you!”
That’s because I started talking to you guys like Tom Selleck trying to steal your home. It’s works! You are agreeing with me. Tireds going to Bangkok. Paul said Jack Joe was productive last year. Heck I even talked him into a reverse mortgage… I mean premium membership.
This Tom Selleck is like a jedi master with his mind tricks.
TheMan 3
Excuse me, you’re the one that said that the combination of Joe and Jack’s season last year was good. I just agreed with you
User 1404051815
Uh, I can assure you that Tired is not going to Thailand or anywhere near Asia. Uh, especially after your comments here

Tired-Joshua has been a real plus but he will come down to earth soon because the computer says so.
YourDreamGM
Huge series coming up. Skenes is a obvious huge advantage over Civale but the other 2 starters are 3 era guys. Perez can hold his own. Tomorrow is tbd. With Keller going 8 does that mean they are going to go with a famous Shelton bullpen game? Or Priester?
This is exactly why I want someone like Winker. 3 RHP in a row. Makes Joe below average .652 ops Olivares awful .566 ops unplayable. Palacios hasn’t shown to hit RHP. He was slightly below average vs both sides last year but I imagine he will play a lot this series. Winker though is a all star vs RHP .865 ops. All star Reynolds hits .850 ops vs RHP. So yeah I would prefer an additional all star in the lineup over below average player. 1 man can make a difference.
Nats probably aren’t ready to sell yet but when they are and if Pirates are still hanging around might give them a call. Or do as Paul says and just sit back and let them call you. Either way have a discussion.
If Brewers sweep it would be a brutal blow. If Pirates sweep they are back in the division hunt. Any other result doesn’t do much. 2 wins better than 1. That’s my bright eyes commentary there.
TheMan 3
I joined this service primarily because of your suggestion Dream.
YourDreamGM
Hey. I will take the credit. I will tell mlbtr I didn’t help than any personally but I got Paul to sign up so it’s kinda like I did!!!
Just for the record though. In case you think it doesn’t provide value even though it cost so lil I think you will survive. I didn’t recommend it. I just told you what I knew about it. But congratulations.
TheMan 3
I had been contemplating it before you mentioned it to Tired and I have come to enjoy the sometimes hilarious moments that you provide especially when you brag about how good of a player Connor Joe and Jack Suwinski are
YourDreamGM
They aren’t good on their own as individual players. And wouldn’t be good together this year. But if you combined their strengths last year they were good.
TheMan 3
Yes, last year combined they were very productive but this year and is the one that is important, combined they stink
YourDreamGM
All star level productive! Higher ops than Reynolds this year. Jack .856 Joe .820 Reynolds .828 And that’s their end of year 2023 numbers. I believe before the all star break they were even higher. Joe might have been in the 900s.
Do I have a bright eyes 2.0? Did Paul go from muting be just days ago to being my assistant dream gm? You wanna trade for Winker?
YourDreamGM
That lil gold badge increased his baseball iq by 10 fold. I dunno if I could handle that kind of increase but might have to consider it. Impressive.
User 1404051815

Yep. Unfortunately I seen it before. Paul will be like don’t worry guys, I will still talk to you even though you aren’t “Premium”. That might last for a week and he is gone. Has his own people now. Vip chats.
Nice knowing you Paul. I hope you know that you joke with, roast and prank people you like. Well except mlb1225.
We”ll miss you buddy.
YourDreamGM
If Paul tells me Jack Joe was a all star last year I might be joining him in the vip lounge. If they let me! Paul will be like want me to recruit dream? No no no. Why do you think we went vip in the first place!
YourDreamGM
I might join Paul but if I do I will wait until off season or January 1st. If Pirates sell and kick the can I won’t be around much to use it. 30 bucks is nothing but I spend way too much time here already. Don’t need even more articles! It might be toxic for me adding to my addiction. And I only come for comments. Just have a title that says Pirates trade such and such prospect for Winker. That’s it. All i need. I already know the prospects. Already know Winker. If I didn’t I could look them up. Besides bright eyes is going to tell me the same thing the article said anyways.
User 1404051815
The funnest time with this team is when they make trades or sign players from the Do Drop In Community Trough and Pizza, home to all kinds of guys and gals who had a taste of the big time and want back. Cherington is a regular visitor.
I can only imagine what’s going through his head at this point. Buy? Sell? Invest in more pierogis? They’re off field drama is what I look forward to most. Trade deadline time is like the swallows returning to Capistrano. Sure, the town is covered in bird poop but it’s a tradition. In a baseball sense, it’s the Pirates at deadline time.
The anticipation is almost too much
I haven’t looked at all of the eligible free agents for this winter but enjoy looking at MLBTR’s annual poll and realizing that the guys almost no one wants will end up here
Something reassuring about that. Three Rivers. Primantis. Pirates transactions.

I am a strong proponent of free speech, and while this particular website doesn’t cost money to post opinions, in order to get the most they offer, you must be a paid subscriber
I watch very little local news and am more interested in what is going on nationally and internationally, and the only true source for information on these levels is subscribing to national media outlets
The Washington Post and New York Times
I joined this site because I support free speech and am tired of the advertisements that pop up when I am trying to write a comment
TheMan 3
There was a place at Fort Meade where I was stationed at during my first three years in the military called “ Dew Drop Inn”.
It was a place where you could get a free meal after regular duty hours for service members who had the munchies.
Vietnam was still ongoing when I served and Fort Meade was a station that was selected to allow veterans to serve their last few months.
Most Vietnam veterans smoked a lot of marijuana and the station did their best to accommodate the veterans and their needs
User 1404051815
Given how both The Post and Times lean right—far right-with their reporting these days, no thanks. The media demonized a candidate in ‘16 and here we are again
Facts, actions and actual sound bytes/quotes are all one needs to make opinions these days
How media of all forms have shifted their energy into putting corporate profits over integrity and responsibility is shameful
User 1404051815
I’m hitting the road here in a couple days in the exact opposite direction of Thailand. But when I return consistently in August, well, you sold me. I’ll take the plunge and get my. badge.

If you only watch fox news or only watch msnbc or only read one parties paper you aren’t looking for the best news. You are looking for people who share the exact same beliefs you do and to feel good because they tell you what you want to hear. Sure they might have a few people who lean the other way or at least pretend to but come on.
I recommend Bill Maher and Greg Gutfield. You here both sides news in a entertaining way. Even better are independent journalist who still have some integrity and don’t have to bend the knee to their corporation over lords.
Post and times though are famously a joke these days for being wrong and flat out lying.
TheMan 3
I subscribe to HBO primarily for Bill Maher and who I saw at Heinz Hall in 2016

I’m rooting for your team. No I am not a fan of brain dead zombies. Just the only hope this country has is for things to get so bad that people wake up. The orange guy can’t prevent this but would provide a speed bump. Faster it gets there the better. Probably will be too late but there’s a chance.
User 1404051815
I’m not thrilled about either candidate or really either party,to be truthful. But anyone with an ounce of intelligence knows this is a choice between the lesser of two evils. By far
I’m not surprised by the stupidity of any cult. People followed Jim Jones. John Gotti was loved. Al Capone could have run for mayor of Chicago and won by a landslide.
I’ve heard younger people say that thanks to age, all we have to do is get through this election and finally, a new generation will govern. But when you have a candidate talking about his willingness to be a dictator and a great many complicit, corrupt support staff concocting doctrines to that end, you have to worry about the future.
The brain dead zombies have always been here. They’ve just been able to crawl out from under their rocks thanks to a human stain who lends credence to their gripes.
TheMan 3
This potential dictatorship is one reason I am glad that my younger years are long gone and that if his promises come to fruition, I can become a hermit and never show my true feelings in public again
This way it will be easier to focus the remainder of my life on how cheap Bob Nutting is and enjoy deep conversations with my friends here
TheMan 3
The orange guy said that he would rip up the Constitution on day one
If you like freedom, he’s not your guy and that would include freedom of the press
YourDreamGM
This isn’t my first rodeo. I wouldn’t lose any sleep on the dictatorship. Guy lost and left. Didn’t want to I am sure but did. He’s 1 old man. What’s he going to lock the oval office door? They’ll get him out of there if need be.
YourDreamGM
Did he say that? I have no idea. Media said he said so many things that I did fact check and found out they were lies. I gave up checking a long time ago. Gave up trusting media long time ago. Nothing I can do. Voters choose the dumbest most awful people in the world. Candidates aren’t the problem. It’s humans. Why I am working on the primate super race. You maniacs! You blew it all up! Damn you all. Damn you all to hell.
User 1404051815
The devil’s advocate shtick won’t work here. There’s no in between
You said something earlier about not reading or viewing just one source. True. Mainstream media demonized a candidate in ‘16. They’re trying to again. Ask yourself why
I used to start off my journalism class each year with this quote: ““The job of the newspaper is to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.”
That’s totally laughable now as journalistic integrity and responsibility has been replaced by payoffs and persuasively slanted writing or reporting meant to push the unwashed masses into a particular direction.
War sells. So does grotesque, unfiltered, gutter level speech meant only to incite
Me? I prefer reading or viewing court proceedings. It’s not that I think justice in this country is beyond reproach—the Supreme Court proved it’s part of the cult—but it provides fact and testimony that’s about as real as possible.
Chalk that up as another reason why this election is a vote for the lesser of two evils.
YourDreamGM
No devil’s advocate here. Don’t know what the guy said. It could be a lie or I wouldn’t be shocked the slightest if he did say it. I just don’t care. These 2 men I guess they are men can say or do anything and their fans will vote for them.
But yeah if you did care don’t just believe the source. Just don’t believe the clip. Watch the entire part of the speech before and after to know the context then decide. I just don’t care. If I happen to see it talked about by a really reliable source I will report.
If you guys post a video link of him saying it I will check it out. If it turns out he never said that will you vote for him? If he did say that is your neighbor that was going to vote for him gonna change their mind? Don’t think it matters.
TheMan 3
He says these things at his rallies! Out of his own mouth
Can’t get any more authentic than that
If you get some time, google Project 2025, it’s the Republican platform for this election and was written by the Heritage Foundation
That is not a lie
Seems Keller might be added to the AS squad after all.

I don’t watch his rallies. He was a interesting and historic politician. I liked that he was a business person and not a career politician. Ignoring his personality I think he is the best president since Reagan. I think Clinton was 2nd best. I find them to be awful people. No interest in hearing him talk. Only thing I have in common with that guy is the love of giving people nicknames.
I personally thought Bernie Tusli even RFK were better. Other side give me Ran Paul, old man Ron Paul, Vivek, even lil Marco. But what did they do? The push another Bush. Hey 2 of our worst presidents of all time but 3rd times a charm!!!! Then Desantis yuck. Give me rapid dog or bright eyes. Anyone but these 2 clowns. Don’t care what either one of them said. I’m going to move on from the political discourse here. You’re only right about one thing, and one thing only: no one is going to change their mind at this point.
And that’s about all you’re right on
YourDreamGM
I am usually right most of the time. Just 98 percent of people aren’t capable of seeing it. And that’s ok. They can’t help it. Not their fault.

In this universe/timeline you never seen or even heard of Oneil Cruz ok. Cruz has been thrown fastballs 46.8% of the time and has 33 strike outs batting average .269 slugging .492 alright. Now pitchers have thrown him breaking balls 35.2% of the time and he has 53 strike outs and a batting average of .189 and slugging of .330 hmmm.
I’m gm. I’m good. I have came to the conclusion that Cruz has trouble with the curve. If my assistant gms want to travel the country bunking up in roach motels and sit out in the sun with your lil plastic radarguns knock yourself out.
In the movie was the team the Pirates and the arrogant guy Neal Huntington? Clint Eastwood is like not only can’t he hit the curve he chases players in rundowns between home plate and first base!!!!!
TheMan 3
For those Pirates fans ( you know who you are) who think this team will be adding players at the deadline, John Perrotto has an article in Pittsburgh Baseball Now about how the front office is “ furious “ with Nutting over his comments on June 21 that he was open to increasing the payroll by way of trades before the deadline this season
Ben Cherington says that he was told otherwise and by making the claim, Nutting is just leading fans on
And Arnoldis Chapman is already being shopped around. Trading a player just to dump his salary doesn’t sound like they are adding players to take them into the playoffs
YourDreamGM
John Perrotto is probably better than the times and post but who is he again? How does he know this? Is it speculation or even worse a unknown team source?
TheMan 3
Can you prove Perotto wrong or is it just personal speculation, Dream?
See how that works?
YourDreamGM
I have something called common sense. If I was a inside source and wanted to make waves would I call some no name local clown who the only people hearing it are people seeking him out to hear what they want to hear. Or would I call a national big dog and it would be a real story. You know like earlier in the year with Ken Rosenthal and the athletic.
TheMan 3
Which big dogs exactly would even care about this considering everyone in America that follows baseball knows how cheap Nutting is and the probability that they wouldn’t be making trades to improve the team?
Unless you’re talking about the Post Gazette
Mendoza Line 215
Paul-Believe half of what you read and none of what you hear.
TheMan 3
The Fan is at this very moment talking about the article written by Perrotto saying that it’s true and mentioned the possibility of trading Hayes to get out from under his contract
YourDreamGM
The Athletic did just this in February or March. Got a lot of press. Pretty big story.
The fan. Slightly up the food chain. These are nobodies. Who do they know? Who’s the source? If Cherington does feel this way why would he share it with anyone that isn’t in his closet circle? If they leaked it why aren’t we hearing this firing news? Why hasn’t Nutting fired Cherington? If you just want to keep gobbling up all this “news” that’s cool. Just don’t expect me to dine on it. This isn’t my first rodeo. If it’s true someone of significance should have been fired or will be soon but should have already. Or maybe Cherington is such a moron he will keep someone he can’t trust employed. If what he said was true and he said it to anyone other than Williams he is a moron. I don’t know if I would go that far with his intelligence.
User 1404051815
There aren’t many guys here who should be untouchable. That includes Hayes. I think he’s a good defensive player. So is Alika Williams. And I don’t think either will ever be hitters
User 1404051815
Chapman probably had his optimum value a week or ten days ago when he was hitting 103-104 on the gun and showing consistency.
Then there was his outing the other day. Yikes
Will be interesting to see what they get for him
TheMan 3
Pirates payroll is second lowest next to the Athletics with $84 million
It’s never going to get better until there’s new ownership
YourDreamGM
Has anyone told Bob Nutting the benefits of a reverse mortgage?
Mendoza Line 215
He has so much money he does not need mortgages.
TheMan 3
Dream, you can read that article by googling Pittsburgh Pirates and looking for the article below the website
YourDreamGM
That’s ok. When Nutting fires Cherington for making this public I will read all about it on here. As a business owner when an employee gets furious at you well you fire them. Especially if they make it public. Nutting has certainly fired him already. Strange no one is reporting it after all this time.
TheMan 3
With both Jones and Falter out, will Priester be brought up to pitch tonight or will Shelton play one of his bullpen games?
They have 6 games left before the break, if they are serious about making the playoffs, they need to win all 6. A split won’t do anything
YourDreamGM
What? You don’t know who is pitching tonight? Seriously? You follow people who have sources at the highest level of the front office but they can’t even tell you who is pitching tonight? That don’t sound right. They should just ask their unnamed source.
TheMan 3
I never claimed to have a source, I was just repeating what that article said
I know by now that you enjoy riling people up with accusations but I have learned from my own experiences it’s not worth an argument
YourDreamGM
We agree again! Because I never claimed you have a source either. John Perrotto does apparently.
TheMan 3
Priester was activated from the IL and Olivares was optioned to Indy today
I guess having Palacios on the roster, Olivares became expendable
Who’s going to Indy after the break?
Bae is batting .366 in 40 games at Indy. Maybe send Jack down and bring up Bae
YourDreamGM
John Perrotto has sources. Ask him!!!! Bright eyes works in the scouting department for MLB. Goku the knowledge or someone in here used to work in mlb ask them.
Just don’t ask me. I don’t have sources. I never worked in baseball. I can’t compete. All I can do is offer my awful opinion that will turn out being wrong.
TheMan 3
you are permitted to have opinions, Dream and if you have doubts about what Perrotto said, that’s all good. You won’t get an argument from me
( didn’t expect that?)
I was wrong, Shelton doesn’t want to win tonight, it’s a bullpen game with Fleming as the starter
Plus the lineup consists of players who strike out frequently
YourDreamGM
That why Cherington went off on Nutting! They aren’t trying to win!
Fleming? Priester? Does it really matter?
YourDreamGM
Olivares is expendable but he was more expandable right now because I believe it was John Perrotto who reported yesterday that Milwaukee has 3 RHP lined up and Olivares is awful vs RHP. He wished they had Winker who was a all star vs RHP.
User 1404051815
If bright eyes truly does work in the scouting department, then it’s all crystal clear as to why this franchise is in the shape it’s in, prospect wise.
Dear God
Mendoza Line 215
In that case I think that your new assistant is John Perruto,
Mendoza Line 215
Paul- They should swap out Bae and Suwinski as you say but this may be Bae’s last chance.
TheMan 3
why could it be Bae’s last chance when Jack has been given far more chances and has consistently failed?
There’s a few players who have been given chances and haven’t produced which is my point
YourDreamGM
Jack can catch a fly ball. Jack can hit a ball over the fence. Jack for 1 season was good.
TheMan 3
what Jack can do with consistency is strike out on pitches nowhere near the plate
The other center fielder who also strikes out with consistency, Michael A Taylor was decent in his previous seasons, just not here
Mendoza Line 215
You beat me to the punch.
But I thought that you were grooming your assistant for this job.
And Suwinski was decent his first year too.
I hope that Bae makes it but he has to learn how to bunt and hit. They have at least given him some reps in CF.But if Suwinski gets his confidence and stroke back they will need his power in the OF somewhere.
YourDreamGM
That was the assistant. This is primate1225 now. This job is so easy that I can do it.
TheMan 3
considering all Taylor seems to do is strike out, Bae could play center and Jack in right against righties, Palacios in right and Taylor in center against lefties.
Or dfa Taylor and find the correct combination including using Joe somewhere
by the way Tellez’ homer in last night’s game came against a lefty
TheMan 3
Ever read the book “ all the presidents men? or just see the movie
It’s about Watergate and how 2 journalists from the Washington Post investigated the scandal that broke up the Nixon presidency as a result of the break in at the DNC headquarters
Only the Post conducted the investigation and no other media outlet
point being just because Perrotto reported that information doesn’t mean it’s not true
YourDreamGM
I haven’t.
You believe the post is as ethical and as good as they were 50 60 however many years ago? If you do that’s cool. I would have my doubts. I found their Russian collision coverage interesting.
TheMan 3
Watergate happened in 1972 and under a different ownership and publisher
The Republican Senate in 2017, and under the committee majority Marco Rubio confirmed that Russia indeed interfered in the 2016 presidential election following their investigation
I guess Republicans aren’t ethical either
YourDreamGM
Wno said they were? Why are you commenting this? I don’t vote. If I did it would be for a independent libertarian green party anything over a republican. I get the feeling Tom is a dem that isn’t thrilled but definitely not a pub. Mendoza i haven’t noticed. Haven’t noticed him chiming in. Doesn’t matter. You aren’t going to change his mind or anyone’s. Everyone has seen plenty of both. And majority of people vote r or d no matter what. No need to sell anyone here. But yes generally speaking republicans aren’t ethical either. I don’t think anyone here is making the argument that they are.
TheMan 3
I have no desire to change anyone’s mind when it comes to politics, I just want to provide information on who I won’t vote for
so, Dream, do you think the Bucs will be sellers or buyers this deadline?
YourDreamGM
I think it comes down to 2 things. Standings. If they are 3 games or less out of the wild card and the 2nd wild card they are like 4 or 5 games back then they should buy and I would go with they will. If…. And here’s the 2nd thing, health. If Falter and more importantly Jones are done for they will sell.
What would I do? I would have traded for Winker. He is affordable with only 2 months of contract remaining. He is more valuable to Pittsburgh than any other team in baseball. He is a perfect fit. And guess what. End of July I am 6 games out of wild card I simply trade Winker. Cost me nothing to get him unless he gets hurt.
Might trade Chapman no matter what. He makes real $. If someone wants him he is gone.
Guys that are under contract for years 2025 2026 I can trade for now and at the same time trade a Taylor, Perez etc. I could trade for Alonzo and trade Rowdy.
Buy or sell? Why not both?
Mendoza Line 215
I chimed in but they deleted my post.
I am an independent and voted for a dead man last time and a third party candidate the time before.
I find it interesting that they have allowed any political commentary at all.
YourDreamGM
Paul’s a VIP now. And they don’t pay these guys enough to read all my post. They are here to write articles.
Use brain dead zombie instead of the pres last name. Dudes been that way for a decade but for some reason half the country just now realized it so it’s ok now. Some reason you can trump trump trump all you want. Ok to bash him. Just don’t say the other guys name.
Best not to talk anything political at all in a new article. Best not to talk about it. No one cares. They support and cheer these political parties like their sports teams. Way more so imo. Total fanatics.
Talk all you want to me but you are wasting your breath. I do find it hilarious that people have disowned family members arguing over what old man is more awful.
Mendoza Line 215
Paul- Think about it though.Dream is exactly rightIt does not make sense unless BC is fired very quickly.
Always take everything with a grain of salt.
TheMan 3
You’re probably right, Mendoza, but with this franchise nothing would surprise me
in other Pirates news, Cruz is nursing a hamstring injury he sustained in yesterday’s game and Alika Williams has been added to the taxi squad and is in Milwaukee in case Cruz goes on the IL
Triolo is at shortstop tonight
YourDreamGM
I’m not saying John is 100% wrong. I’m just saying if you do a lil math it doesn’t add up. Bright eyes might be working in mlb scouting department. Anything’s possible but how probable?
Nutting fired his last management staff. Paid them millions to sit at home and do nothing. After 5 years and still under 500? My guess is Cherington is walking on eggshells yes mr Nutting, absolutely mr Nutting. Pick up that dog poop Ben. But I don’t have a scoop. Use your hands!!!!! Yes mr Nutting.
TheMan 3
I get your points, Dream and they make sense
If Cherington is walking on eggshells, would the same hold true for Shelton and even more, Haines?
Personally, if’s my belief, if they at least don’t finish at .500, everyone should lose their jobs at the end of the season
YourDreamGM
Who knows if he is even on eggshells. Nutting could have extended him and never told anyone.
Nutting is slow to move. Would probably take something like Johns source claims to get him fired right now.
You would think they put the blame on Haines for this year. Shelton next year. Then Cherington goes. If they don’t win next year I would send Cherington off as well. That would be 3 years of failure to contend. I will give him a pass for last year even though he didn’t fire Haines. But no injuries this year and losing continues. Unless 2025 is a injury disaster like 2023, he better win. Unfortunately I can see Nutting being slow to move.
Mendoza Line 215
I think that if they do not win this year Shelton and Haines are gone as they should be.
Mendoza Line 215
I looked at the twenty comments listed after that article and only one made sense.
I mentioned to Dream before that Nutting was talking like a politician saying he would spend money or have BC make a trade well before the deadline.
I remember that last year BC said that they were under pressure to start winning.
Nutting did not say that he would spend a lot of money.
The commenters got on Nutting for not spending anything.
The article was clearly wrong in saying that he did not make trades at the trade deadlines in 2013,14,and 15.He did.He will if the Pirates prove that they have a good team.
They even added at the 2012 trade deadline.I forgot his name but he was a first baseman who had played for the Cubs and Dodgers and hit very well for the Pirates in 2012.
He then retired rather than play for the Pirates.

If you go back and look Nutting said nothing about making trades early. He just said they were prepared to. Didn’t say anything about spending more $. Just said he would make more funds available to the baseball ops department. Politicians lie a lot. Nutting is beyond what we know as politicians. He tells the people what they want to hear without lying! Incredible. I never voted in my life but if Nutting runs as independent he will have my vote. Guy’s a freaking genius. Read my lips, no new taxes. Nutting be like I’m not prepared to raise taxes.

They added Justin Morneau who played first base

why would Nutting raise taxes? He’s independently wealthy and if anything he would lower taxes

Morneau had like three rbi’s for the Pirates so they did not sign him in free agency but with Colorado he led the league in batting average the next year beating out Josh Harrison.
