The Orioles are calling up pitching prospect Chayce McDermott to start tomorrow’s game in Miami, manager Brandon Hyde informed the team’s beat (X link via Andy Kostka of the Baltimore Banner). The O’s need to add him to the 40-man roster.
It’s the first MLB call for McDermott, who turns 26 next month. The Astros took him in the fourth round of the 2021 draft out of Ball State. Houston shipped him to Baltimore as part of the three-team Trey Mancini deal the following summer. The 6’3″ righty has since developed into one of the O’s more talented minor league arms. Baseball America ranked him as the #6 prospect in the Baltimore system coming into this season.
McDermott had combined for a 3.10 ERA while striking out nearly 31% of batters faced at the top two minor league levels a year ago. He has spent all of this season with Triple-A Norfolk, working to a 3.96 earned run average across 20 outings. He easily leads all Triple-A pitchers with 129 strikeouts, fanning nearly a third of opponents.
BA credits McDermott with a mid-90s fastball that plays especially well at the top of the strike zone. That’s the best offering in a five-pitch mix. Whether McDermott sticks as a starter will be largely dependent on his command. He has had a hard time finding the strike zone this year, walking more than 13% of opponents. Free passes have been an issue throughout his minor league career and could point to an eventual bullpen role.
McDermott’s first look comes from the rotation, though it might not be more than a spot start. Baltimore could add a starter to slot in behind Corbin Burnes and Grayson Rodriguez before next Tuesday’s deadline. The O’s could then option McDermott back to Norfolk or give him an opportunity to carve out a bullpen role for the stretch run. They had needed to add him to the 40-man roster by next offseason to keep him out of the Rule 5 draft. Their 40-man is at capacity and they don’t have any candidates for a move to the 60-day injured list, so they’re likely to designate someone for assignment tomorrow.
For whatever reason I saw the name “Vance Honeycutt” out of the corner of my eye.
Why tell us?
Also, 100% on the bootie hole comment.
Gotta do something. Suarez and Kremer are God awful.
They don’t get much Chayce on their pitches.
Kremer is NOT god awful. He’s a perfectly good number 5.
13-5 last year, 4-6 this year, ERA half a run higher this year. That doesn’t cut it in the AL East, no matter what you and the 3 clowns who liked your post seem to think.
Still cannot believe they got a combined 6 bodies for Mancini and Lopez!!!
Cano, Povich, and McDermott could all impact the club for years too.
I think McDermott is a reliever long term but we desperately need someone else. Suarez looks like he’s been figured out. Great little run he had but we were lucky to get so much production out of him.
I wouldn’t even mind kicking the can on James Paxton. We need at least 2 starters to get us through the season.
Know when to hold ’em and when to fold ’em. Desperation deadline time for contenders, Mancini and Lopez not fully collapsing until joining their new teams, with previously lousy Cano getting upcoached in return. The two teen pitchers from the Twins are still rough works in progress, and they knew Johnson would be on the shelf for quite a while and this a gamble.
Astros got stars in their eyes looking at Mancini’s bloated power numbers in Camden Yards. It’s known as the Jonathan Schoop Effect.
Except the wall had already been moved and his power numbers were down. Mancini was unfortunately mis-served by the 2019 juiced ball stats.
Who’s getting sent down? Irvin
Nah. I’d say Burch Smith or Vinny Nittoli…
Vinny Nittoli pitched couple scoreless innings tonight. He’s probably staying
DDDD would be proud of these dumpster dives!
Brian Baker…please.
Baker, Smith, and Nittoli all pitched tonight…and all did well. It’s like they knew something….
Smith looked fantastic tonight.
Could see Baker as well. Almost included him…
Nittoli I’m guessing.
Winner, winner…
Unless he’s dreadful I would expect at least two starts from McDermott. The O’s have a double-header with the Jays on Monday and without using McDermott a second time either 1) a buillpen arm will take the start or 2) one of the other four starters will end up taking the mound with less than regular rest.
Potentially complicating matters is Suarez and Mateo both exited with injuries, while Urias was supposed to get the day off with a neck issue.
Mateo’s arm injury is probably more serious than Suarez’s, but not likely to land him on the 60-day IL.
Maybe DFA somebody like Colin Selby who’s not been great either at AAA Omaha or Norfolk.
Interesting. You suppose the Tigers will have a couple scouts in attendance?
Why is Holliday playing? 😉
MCBB is insufferable and annoying
And you are no fun and obnoxious. It was a joke.
Please designate the “master Baker “!
No pressure. But the team really needs you to perform well.
Pretty sure him and Povich are a year early to be used as rotation pieces. NO pressure there. Gulp!
These guys are 24 and 26 years old. They’ve had plenty of AAA success. Time to throw them in the fire. They don’t need to win another AAA World Series at Norfolk.
They are here a year early because guys like Bradish, Means and Wells are suppose to be here this year. That said; agree that they’re old enough to “throw in the fire”. Fingers crossed.
Interesting trade this was for the Orioles to get McDermott.
To Baltimore – Chayce McDermott (TB) and Seth Johnson (HOU)
To Tampa – Jose Siri (HOU)
To Houston – Trey Mancini (BAL) and Jayden Murray (TB)
Not a bad trade for the Orioles.
Speaking of Seth Johnson, even with a bloated BB rate, his ERA is below 3.00 as an SP at AA. He should be getting close to his seasonal innings limit. What number of innings he has left, let him finish up as a bullpen piece with the parent club?
Who knows about Seth Johnson. He only threw only 10 or so innings last year. His walk rate was higher in the start of the season than now. Good news for him is that he seems to have recovered from the UCL surgery.
