This week, host Darragh McDonald is joined by Steve Adams of MLB Trade Rumors to discuss…
- MLBTR’s list of the Top 50 Trade Candidates For The 2024 Trade Deadline (2:20)
- The Royals acquire Hunter Harvey from the Nationals (5:45)
- The Mets acquire Phil Maton from the Rays (14:55)
Plus, we answer your questions, including…
- The Cubs are such an interesting case right now. They’re not performing well, but they’re also not built to sell. They’ve got a lot of players slated to return from the IL in the next few weeks and they’ve got an easy strength of schedule after the deadline. They’ve got a strong farm system and some positional surpluses that they could deal from, but they’re up against the tax that they’ve self-imposed as a hard cap. They’re not too far from playoff contention but they’ve got a bunch of teams ahead of them. What should they do? (27:15)
- With the trade deadline approaching fast and the Tigers’ recent play, could they be potential buyers if they continue this trend up to the deadline? (34:25)
- If the White Sox trade Luis Robert Jr., Garrett Crochet, Erick Fedde and Michael Kopech, just how improved could they expect to be? (40:40)

The Tigers have to play the long game and not make decisions based on the last 10 games. If they do make organization changes based on the last few games vs the last 10 years, there’s really no sense concerning ourselves with them

The last 10 days are definitely more relevant than the last 10 years.
tigerfan4ever
Not in the long picture going forward they’re not. The Tigers need to already have made up their minds on whether they’re buying or selling or a combination of both. We’ll see what the answer is in the next couple of weeks.

of course they are
don’t be absurd
tigerfan4ever
You don’t know that.

It’s more about the next 65 games than it is about the last ten, for two reasons.
1-10 games is too short. You are 3-2 in one-run games and 2-0 in walk-offs. Instead of 8-2, you could easily be 5-5.
2-More importantly, what is your expectations for the next 65 games. If the #3 WC plays .540, the Tigers need to play .623.
Slider_withcheese
That long game includes still owing a .179 hitter almost 100 million dollars.

Tigers are not going to be buyers, no matter what happens the next two weeks. Whether or not they sell will be affected by the next two weeks.

The Rays Could Deal Starters, Garrett Crochet, James Wood
I’m glad there’s a comma between Rays and Garrett.

How about this?
Dbacks trade Thomas, Lawlar, De Los Santos, Druw Jones, Yu Min Lun, and Yilber Diaz.
Tigers Trade SKubal.
Is that enough? Fair? I’m not sure
sad tormented neglected mariners fan
Dbacks would probably be overpaying by a small amount
Take out Thomas because the tigers would have a future outfield of Greene Clark and druw jones with this trade
Also would the snakes even need to acquire Tarik? They would rather solve the 3B issue
Tomas80
Not even close to enough.
zack novotny
Ok glad to hear I had no idea. If the Dbacks were to get Skubal what would they need to send? In your opinion?
the good donald
Only if the DBacks take Javy Baez, too.

Have the Rays called Chaim Bloom yet?

The Cubs are in an interesting spot for sure. As stated they really aren’t set up to sell. They can find a catcher they are one of the only teams who might be looking for a catching upgrade at the deadline. They need some relief help should be plenty of that available. 3b is a clear need but not as easy to find one of those. I think they could add all 3 of those things without giving up much of their future.
DonOsbourne
The Cubs are similar to the Blue Jays in the fact that what’s best for the team and what’s best for the current front office are probably different things.
Blackpink in the area
Yeah the Cardinals would be in a similar situation with a few less wins. At least the Cubs have prospects to trade if they want or need to.
Canuckleball
That may be to the Cubs detriment though. Neither the Jays or Cubs are likely to see the playoffs this year.
The Jays have a number of short term pieces they can auction off and try to restock for next year.
The Cubs roster is in a better position to buy then sell, and they are only 3.5 games out of a wildcard. The problem is they have to leapfrog SIX teams to get there. They have to be 4 games better then those teams the rest of the way to get there. All it will take is one of those teams breaking even with Chicago, and they don’t make the playoffs. With that many teams ahead of them, the odds are pretty good that at least one team will be able to stay ahead of the Cubs.
Any prospects they ship out will likely be wasted on a failed playoff shot. In the long run, they might be better to just hold and make no trades.

hoyer is an idiot so dont expect much to happen in the way of blockbuster trades. They’ll probably add a low level reliever or two and keep all the expiring contracts and those walk next year.

Every day I check this site to see if shapiro and his useless carryon baggage atkins have been fired in Toronto……at the very least useless atkins……to begin with….
jdgoat
Looking more and more like that’s not happening

JDGoat told us Jays fans to “trust the process” and shamed anyone who dared to question the regime. Staying on-brand, goes with the majority and pretends he never did such things.
CTS, it might happen soon or not until after the season. It’s not a good situation as what they need to do is drastic, and Rogers will not allow it.
