The Marlins announced their status as deadline sellers more than two months ago with their surprising early trade of Luis Arraez, and with the trade deadline now just 22 days away, their activity on that front should pick back up. While much of the focus has been on closer Tanner Scott, who’s a free agent at season’s end, Craig Mish of SportsGrid and the Miami Herald reports that there’s a “growing belief” Jazz Chisholm Jr. will also be traded. Mish lists the Mariners as a “club to watch” if Chisholm is moved and also suggests the Pirates and Royals could join the bidding.
Chisholm, 26, is enjoying a solid season at the plate, hitting .255/.326/.407 (105 wRC+) with ten homers and 17 steals (albeit in 25 tries). He’s struggled with strikeouts on the past, and while his 24.9% rate is still worse than average, it’s a notable improvement over the 29.2% clip he registered in the four prior seasons. He’s paired those improved contact skills with a career-best 8.8% walk rate.
There’s little doubting Chisholm’s raw tools and star-caliber upside. He’s averaged 26 homers and 32 steals per 162 games played in his career. However, he’s never topped 124 games in a season and has only reached 400 plate appearances once to this point in his major league career. Injuries have frequently hobbled Chisholm and caused him to miss significant time. Since establishing himself as a regular in 2021, Chisholm has missed time due to a shoulder injury, a back strain (which required a 60-day IL stint), turf toe and an oblique strain.
Chisholm is earning an affordable $2.625MM this season and is controlled for two more years following the current campaign. He’s been the Marlins’ primary center fielder over the past two seasons, though that move was borne out of necessity. Miami has been unable to develop a center fielder and has come up empty in its long-running attempts to acquire a controllable option at the position. Chisholm, a natural shortstop who slid over to second base early in his career, moved to center field last year and has drawn mixed reviews from most public defensive metrics. He was a plus defender in just over 1300 innings at second base before the move to the outfield.
All three of the potential teams listed in Mish’s report stand as clear fits in a theoretical Chisholm deal. Royals general manager J.J. Picollo has been open about his desire to add a bat capable of playing both the infield and the outfield — a need Chisholm would fill nicely. The Royals have fairly even platoon splits as a team, but the bulk of the team is right-handed — including Kansas City’s two best hitters, Bobby Witt Jr. and Salvador Perez. First baseman Vinnie Pasquantino and second baseman Michael Massey (who’s been limited to just 142 plate appearances due to injury) are the only left-handed bats on the roster who have turned in average or better production, by measure of wRC+.
The Pirates, meanwhile, have received sub-par offensive production from second base this season. Since being called up, former first-round pick Nick Gonzales has delivered roughly league-average offense (.269/.307/.414, 99 wRC+), but he’s been more productive against lefties than righties. Pittsburgh outfielders are also hitting just .227/.299/.352 as a collective unit this season. Chisholm could provide an offensive boost in either role or potentially split his time between the two positions based on matchups.
Both the outfield and second base have been weaknesses for the AL West-leading Mariners as well. The hope in Seattle was that the offseason acquisition of Jorge Polanco would have solidified second base, but the switch-hitter’s steady offensive output unexpectedly cratered this season; in 214 plate appearances, the former Twins infielder has slashed just .189/.280/.284 with a career-worst 33.6% strikeout rate. Their outfielders have combined for a .230/.285/.365 batting line.
With two and a half seasons of club control remaining, an affordable salary and another productive season highlighted by his typical blend of speed and power, Chisholm should come with a relatively steep cost of acquisition. Mish notes that a deal in the offseason is possible as well, if the Marlins don’t get an offer to their liking in the next three weeks, and suggests that even some current non-contenders could look into a deal for Chisholm (both now and in the offseason) as they look toward the 2025 campaign and beyond.

It’s so tempting to want his talent but I think the kid needs some work between the ears. I’m not insulting him, he’s a young guy and exuberant, nothing wrong with that. I just think he takes the ego a BIT too far at times. Not much, just a bit, and that’s all it takes.
User 4245925809
Bang on Sodo, Bang on.
Steve wrote an extremely complimentary article, describing all of the natural talent jazz has, plays and things he does and can do. Watch Marlins games and he will often times dazzle with tremendous defensive plays, then often enough make a boneheaded baserunning/defensive miscue.
Near top of the league talent wise, but thing some connections crossed up above and also think myself he’s one of the Marlin players have mentioned this year more interested in chasing personal stats than any team oriented approach which could bare watching as to what his actual trade value is.
Slider_withcheese
Move him to a team with higher expectations, a winning culture, clubhouse leadership, teammates that hold him accountable, and a manager that isn’t a lame duck, and watch how quickly he tones it down.
sad tormented neglected mariners fan
You just described the Yankees and they have a full outfield
However he could replace gleyber at 2nd
Mikenmn
You just described a sad reality–Boone doesn’t seem to be a lame duck and I just don’t understand it. Both he and Cashman should be looking…
Rsox
Do teams even consider him a Second Baseman anymore though? Even after trading Arraez they kept him in CF and he has played a single play at 2B since 2022
pileofsandwich
Betts switched to SS and 2B after not playing 2B for years, besides a handful of games and he he hadn’t played SS in like 10 years. Just not playing it for a bit doesn’t mean that he can’t anymore. I’d say that Jazz is capable of playing 2B, SS, and the 3 OF positions.
Michaelchavez22
Dodgers could use him at ss
Poolhalljunkies
Jazz was a terrible ss..and so far has negative dsr numbers in cf…2b might be his best position..but hes no gold glover there either

Chisholm would fit right in on plenty of teams. As a Cardinals fan I do question the fit personality wise but I am not putting the blame on Chisholm the Cardinals are ultra conservative and I don’t think it’s for the benefit of the team.
People from different walks of life act differently than others. Let’s be careful when we judge others because they don’t act like we expect them to act. If he’s doing criminal things that’s different but attitude is a subjective term.

You sold the Mariners when you mentioned his strike outs, he will fit right in with that club.

Funny, sad, and unfortunately, true.
User 1404051815
His strikeouts would also make him right at home in Pittsburgh and his .250-something average would place him as one of their top hitters
Biggest selling point for our “frugal” owner is his salary.
holecamels35
I thought Pittsburgh as well. My initial prediction was for them to trade for Josh Bell. Now I don’t really want it to happen because he’s hardly better than Rowdy. I think he’s a risky player though. Another Cruz type with potential that gm’s bank on and lots of times get in trouble with because they overpay for them.
greatwhiteangus
I would argue that Bell is NOT better than Rowdy at this point.
With Jazz being so affordable he would probably cost the Bucs more prospects than BC is willing to part with, and then Jazz would more than likely miss as many games as he plays.
User 1404051815
Depends on what pieces of course, but I’m inclined to agree. They have depth at middle infield and pitcher. They’re threadbare everywhere else. But a couple of those pitching pieces are looked upon as being the guys who join the staff here and make it one of the best
Now, if they could only hit
And Bell is certainly not the answer
panj341
Seems to miss a lot of games due to injury.
We have Hayes with his bad back so we don’t need another guy who can’t play everyday
WillieS
At this point meaning that he has had a better June than Bell! Before June 1st Tellez couldn’t hit a basketball and I certainly don’t want him to be our everyday 1B. They are both bench players but I agree that Bell isn’t the answer. Jazz should be our focus right now. He’s cheaper than Robert ( rumors to the Pirates?) and personally I like him better. Go get Jazz
Goku the Knowledgable One
I still like Bell.
Can get him for nothing and I think he helps
Jazz would be committing a lot to someone with issues on and off the field
User 1404051815
Problem is, he presents more of a problem line-up wise than help. Ok, he plays 1st against right handers. Then what? He can’t play OF. So do you cut into Cutch’s ABs as a DH? Because Cutch can’t play a lot of Of anymore, either
I get that the Marlins are willing to eat a great deal of his salary. That alone will appeal to our “frugal” owner. But he hasn’t shown a great deal in his time in Miami and the big question is, what would they want in return? This past winter, it was said they covered Nick Gonzales. The kid is one of the few Pirates who’s hitting the ball
User 1404051815

holecamels35
I don’t want us to trade for Bell, that was just my prediction based on the moves they make that barely move the needle. He could be had for very little but again probably not better than Tellez and doesn’t fit well into the lineup.
I feel like the Marlins could have interest in Henry Davis. They haven’t had a good catcher since they traded JTR.
Goku the Knowledgable One
I hope im wrong, but I think Rowdy just had a good month, nothing more.
Bell is a career 8.1 WAR and Rowdy is 1.0
Bell’s career shows a far superior hitter who usually gets hot in the 2nd half
Goku the Knowledgable One
Whelp Rowdy keeps raking , so now would target OF if they even add anyone

When posters make claims like how bad the Mariners are at striking out, I usually assume they are exaggerating the situation. Posters just like to say fantastic thing.
Not you, sir. With 950 Mariner bats struck out, they lead MLB. There’s even a somewhat significant lead against the second worst team at striking out; the Oakland A’s.
Chicken In Philly?
And the irony is the Mariners approached this offseason trying to add high OBP guys.

Maybe they can send him to Arizona and get Zac Gallen back?
sad tormented neglected mariners fan
I think Arizona won that trade…
CO Guardening
Trading from a surplus is awesome when you can sustain said surplus.
BannedMarlinsFanBase
Yep. The problem that makes this look worse is that, at the time, the D-Backs would’ve done the deal for Jordan Yammamoto. Unfortunately, he was valued more at the time by the Marlins. Pablo Lopez was too. Lopez or Gallen would have been a loss trade for Jazz. But had the Marlins budged on Yammamoto, dear goodness that would’ve been great!
SalaryCapMyth
Zac Gallen, one of the best starters in MLB. That Zac Gallen? You want to trade him for Chisholm? Someone who has only once hit significantly better than league average on a very injury shortened season? That is a really bad trade for Arizona.
Codeeg
I’m sure Atlanta can think of a way to get involved in the trade as well, but it’s gonna have to involve Ozuna and alcantara.
sad tormented neglected mariners fan
Trading ozuna makes no sense he is literally their only hitter that isn’t slumping
Unless you want to do the hypothetical funny what if he returns to Miami with gallen I don’t see anything
Get Stanton yelich and realmuto back too sure
Codeeg
Look at Gallens trade history, you’ll see the connection.
Melchez17
It happened before. 2019
Poolhalljunkies
You realize the marlins traded gallen for jazz right?
unglar
They were originally traded for each other. The joke is that the Marlins would want to get a do-over.
SalaryCapMyth
If Atlanta gets Zac Gallen, I would take that trade 10/10 times. Ozuna is a 33 year old DH on an expiring contract. Loosing Ozuna would pretty much gut the Braves line up but getting Gallen would be a win for 2025 and probably wouldn’t ruin a 2024 playoff spot.
I think everyone should stop and ask themselves how much an ace with another season of control is worth and why Arizona would want to trade him. Is it because at the moment they are only a .500 team? I don’t think last seasons NL pennant winners are ready to pack it in just yet. To pry Zac Gallen from Arizona it’s really going to hurt someones feelings.
Hell, I would LOVE to read some thoughts from some Arizona fans on these takes we’re writing.
Ghost Pepper
Our outfield is loaded and we have the starter at 2nd in the all star game. Gallen is one of the reasons we have another shot this season.
AZ just had a pretty good road trip ,
I’m sure we’ll add if we’re in a nice spot but I don’t see Jazz helping much.
User 1404051815
When I read things like this, I ask myself if trading a guy who can change a game literally every time he’s at the plate for a guy who may win every 5 days is a good trade off
I’m not a fan of either team, but if we’re looking at this season only, I say no
SalaryCapMyth
If you mean something like Ozuna for Gallen in some sort of way, the trade would never happen. But if the Braves went this way and the DBacks were crazy enough to do this, the Braves win the trade. Ozuna is a free agent after this season, is a DH because he has cement blocks for hands and is closer to 34 than he is 33. Gallen is younger and has an additional season of control. The Braves would suffer a little this season to be better next season and better for it in 26 as well.
User 1404051815
You miss my point
If the Braves are all in for a big run this year, the trade makes no sense
If it’s a longer term picture, I agree with you wholeheartedly
I’m an outsider but if the Braves make this kind of deal, they’re waving the white flag for this season
SalaryCapMyth
No, not waving it. I still think they would stand a good chance at a playoff spot. I don’t miss your point. I just think the over all benefit would be better for the Braves than worse.

LordD99
The acquiring team should move him back to second, where he was a good defender. Not the case in center.
ayrbhoy
SEA would do that. They wouldn’t move Julio from CF. SEA currently has the fecundity of prospects to make a trade if they are willing to gamble on his health. IMO they’re a perfect trade partner for MIA who can stock up on talent from a pool of 3 Top 100 SS/INF and a couple Top 100 OFers.
Personally- I would rather SEA used their Top 100 prospects to get a hitter who has spent far fewer days on the IL.
sad tormented neglected mariners fan
For a jazz trade (which we shouldn’t do) it would take probably a top 100 prospect and a lottery ticket, not a ton but nothing to sneeze at for a 700 ops outfielder
Lazaro Montes + Logan Evans would do it even though I wouldn’t want to do that since Montes will rise in rankings (I bet top 25 next year)
SodoMojo90
Montes is the one player they need to hold onto. If he continues to hit as he has this year, it won’t be long before he’s a top 10 prospect in MLB. Trading a package built around Harry Ford is the best route. He’s blocked and will have great value.
Phil253
Ford in a Chisholm is stupidity and the m’s already have a 2nd baseman, Bliss. Polanco is the piece that needs to be moved to make way for Bliss. Dude will continue to get better. Move Polanco, move France, move Haniger.
SODOMOJO
IMO, Laz is the only guy I wouldn’t be open to trading. But I concede that he’s our best chip, with Harry a not far behind him.
good vibes only
Both Montes (29) and Evans (80) are top 100 prospects right now according to Baseball America. That price is way too high for Jazz.
I love Jazz and I hope the Mariners get him and put him at 2b. Seeing him and Julio having fun on the same field would be incredible. But Jazz has not performed. His savant page is UGLY on both sides of the ball.. and he’s cheap this year but he only has 2 arb years of control left. The prospect cost is not going to be massive.
I bet he gets traded for much less than everyone thinks.
sad tormented neglected mariners fan
Shoot I didn’t know baseball America already had him at 29 and Evans at 80 I was using mlb.com
How about Cade Marlowe and Ryan bliss in a deal
ayrbhoy
Sad and… Mariners Fan-
This is my not so humble opinion- I would be shocked if the M’s trade Lazer Montes when:
1) he is developing into such a good hitter
2) he is exactly the type of hitter the M’s lineup will need for 2025 >
3) No disrespect to MiA fans but I honestly don’t think multiple contenders will be beating the door down to get Jazz Chisolm. I dont see that type of bidding war (to acquire 2.5 yrs) for a player who cannot stay healthy.
4) If they trade Lazer AND Logan Evans to MIA for Jazz Chisolm I assure you Tanner Scott will be included. Both Montes and Evans for Chisolm? Imo that’s a foolish over pay. A package of Montes and Evans should get you a lot more than you think…. FO’s put such an emphasis on the value of that 6+ yrs of team control.
SodoMojo90
Wasn’t suggesting ford in a jazz trade. I would be upset if they traded anyone for him.
good vibes only
Ford is the asset they should be most comfortable trading. Raleigh isn’t going anywhere and Ford’s bat doesn’t really play as well at any other position if he moves down the defensive spectrum.
Idk if Jazz is the best guy they can get for him tho
david justice
Impressive he has “17 steals in 15 attempts”.
CaseyAbell
Main issues are injury history and, frankly, underperformance compared to the endless hype. You’re talking about a guy who has produced 0.9 bWAR so far this year, which doesn’t blow anybody away. Wouldn’t give too much for him, but lots of clubs are looking for offense this year.
Easy as 1 2 3
My guess would be Guardians to sure up their CF issues. Dodgers could also be in the mix for his services.
I honestly see the dodgers being very active and blowing the farm this year to fix any holes- plus adds another lefty bat to a pretty rh heavy lineup.
Maybe Andy Pages for Chisholm straight up.
But definitely see them being active in the pitching market. Better to have too many guys then wind up with not enough.
myaccount2
Chisholm isn’t suring up anyone’s CF issues. His DRS is -6 after putting up -9 last season, his UZR/150 is -7.4 after -6.6 last season, his RngR is -3.3 after -1.9 last season, his OAA is 0, his arm value is 0. He needs to move back to 2B where he’s a solid defender (2 DRS, 3 OAA with some slightly below average metrics, but a decent passing of the eye test when he last played there) instead.
Shrutefarm
I would be very shocked and disappointed if the Dodgers traded for him. He does not move the needle at all.
Mojo37
Chisholm is not coming to the Dodgers. Dodgers want team players not self-centered egotists. I take it you are not aware of the history between Jazz and Miggy Ro.
myaccount2
Rojas was an idiot for that, and Jazz is by far the better player.
Dodgerfan74
How was Rojas an idiot? He was being a clubhouse leader and Chisholm didn’t like Rojas telling him what to do
Mojo37
Jazz is a jerk. Which makes two of you.
JRamHOF
Guards don’t want him
myaccount2
You might not want him, but you don’t know who in that FO does or doesn’t. Comments like this are always baffling. Being a fan of a team doesn’t give you any special insight to the front office’s thinking.
Samuel
myaccount2;
Cleveland is already using middle infielders to man CF:
Tyler Freeman, Gabriel Aria, and recently gave Angel Martinez time in CF. Plus Will Brennan will be coming off the IL and can play there.
The point is not that Jazz might not be better. The point is that Cleveland prefers to bring their players along from their farm system. Have a look at their roster. If they go outside it’s because they’re trying to dump a veteran salary and will take youngsters they can work with in trade.
Jazz is hardly an established player. The Marlins would want some good prospects with high upside in return for Jazz. If Cleveland thought they could work him in at CF, then sending back a guy like Aria – that can play 17 positions adequately, but can’t hit more than once a week – might be something they’d consider….but again, that’s not why the Marlins are shopping Jazz.
myaccount2
@samuel- Well, of course, bcause they’re a low-budget franchise. Those types of teams rarely make big trades because they can’t afford to take the hit to their farm. That doesn’t mean they don’t want him, it just means they might not pay up for him.
Jon M
The term you guys are looking for is “shore up”, not “sure up” lol

For better or worse, Jazz is the face of the Marlins and it seemed crazy to me to trade him. Until I realized that he and Tanner Scott are literally the only players they have right now that would be worth it to trade in order to get any kind of decent return. The Marlins are a mess.
Pads Fans
What a sad statement. A below MLB average player that cannot stay healthy for a full season is the face of the franchise. That is an indictment of the organization really.
Samuel
duffys cliff;
How could the Marlins be a mess?
The baseball mainstream media was united this past offseason in pronouncing the female GM that resigned after they finally had a decent season in 2023 as some sort of genius for putting together that Marlins team. What? Suddenly the team got bad again?
Peter Bendix was with the Rays for 14 years. The ML team was successful. Worked his way up to GM, and was hired by the Marlins to be the President of Baseball Ops. The cupboard is obviously bare and Bendix is open to moving anything that might be of value to other MLB teams if he can pick up some prospects that he place
into the farm system he’s rebuilding.
duffys cliff
I didn’t say the farm was bad, the ML club is atrocious. But the farm is definitely one of the lower ranked farms too. I’m sure they are working to get better. But as of today, they are a mess.
Alex O.
Not sure if they would trade in the division, but it would be fun to see the Mets trade for him to take McNeill’s spot as 2B/Platoon OF.
User 1404051815
I’m a little confused. Just saw the Mets here in Pittsburgh and they have a lot of nice pieces. I thought McNeil was one of them. Am I mistaken?
Shrutefarm
McNeil just signed a new contract only to turnaround and have a bad year. I don’t think the Mets are going to move him at this point, but if they do, he has the pedigree to turn it around with a new ball club.
ayrbhoy
I’m a huge M’s fan….(jokes on me, I know,) McNeil sounds like the perfect fit for SEA.
Send him our way – Dipoto and Hollander are known in the industry as Second Base Whisperers. Theyll fix him. Guaranteed…. Just look at what we’ve done with A Frazier, (scratches that out,) eh….Kolten Wong (draws a line thru that,) ……ah …Jorge Polanco!!! …Yes SEA will sort out McNeil
Alex O.
I’m not sure that the Mets would be able to trade McNeil, but relegating him to more of a utility bench role seems likelier.
ayrbhoy
Alex – I suppose my failed attempt at humor re: a fictitious trade of Jeff McNeil can only be truly appreciated by Mariners fans. Trust me pal, even if McNeil is available they’re not touching that trade with a 10 ft pole.
Mariners fans would know that their Organization would never make a trade for another ‘2B like Jeff McNeil.’ Over the last 3 seasons they have made 3 consecutive trades for a ‘2B like Jeff McNeil.’ Those trades have not only failed miserably, statistically those players have had the single worst year of their careers (by a huge margin.) One of them – Kolten Wong had such a massive drop off in SEA he is no longer in the game at the highest level. They are anything but 2B Whisperers. Since Robbie Cano left in 2018 T-Mobile is currently where a good 2B “goes to die.”
bravesfan
He needs to be an Atlanta Braves. He fits perfectly both short term and long term. He even stated before he’d love to be in Atlanta. He can play OF or heck, try him back at short.
NashvilleJeff
Chisolm’s a terrible fit for the Braves. Would be of minimal use to plug an outfield hole for this season—and he’d have to play a corner spot (that he’s never played) when Harris II returns from the IL next week.. He wouldn’t play over Acuna, Harris II, or Kelenic next year. The Braves value up the middle defense too much to play him at SS and there’s no way he moves Albies off 2B. Nacho Alvarez probably gets the SS job next season (maybe sooner.) Good contact hitter on a rookie contract that will help the Braves w/luxury tax issues. Would be a terrible waste of assets to deal for a poor position fit like Chisolm. Can’t see AA even considering it.
bravesfan
Well, that’s a silly take. But ok. I respect ur opinion no matter how ridiculous it is
mlb fan
“that’s a silly take”…It seemed quite accurate to me. I can’t see A.A taking on an injury-prone, average player with the ego and bravado of an all-time great. The only thing that moves the needle with Jazz might be his dance moves.
greatwhiteangus
You literally said “heck, try him at short” and that’s NOT a silly take?
😀
ATLbravos
actually they would put jazz at 2b and move ozzie back to SS. he moved to 2b for dansby. so i like your take honestly.
NashvilleJeff
Ozzie hasn’t got the arm for SS anymore. They moved him to 2B because he broke his right elbow. He can barely make throws to 1B from there now. He’ll never play SS again.
hyraxwithaflamethrower
No surprise. They don’t look primed to contend, though a lot of that has to do with a ton of pitching injuries.ight as well cash in. They already traded Arraez, might as well go all out.
Chuck from Uniontown
Pirates make a lot of sense for a guy like Jazz Chisolm. Not a rental, and someone to slot into center if you trade away Michael A. Taylor. And before someone says Taylor sucks and won’t be worth anything, Austin Hedges is the only 2023 Pirate with a WS Ring. Defense always has value.
Monkey’s Uncle
I also think that being in the same clubhouse with Andrew McCutchen could be a very good thing for Jazz’s maturity… if he wants it to be helpful, that is. Regardless, I agree, the Pirates should be looking into this if they aren’t already.
greatwhiteangus
I’m sure they are looking into it, hopefully not too long though. He’s an upgrade, yes, but barely league average and can’t stay healthy. Biggest issue is that he has years of control left which means the Bucs will have to overpay for his mehhhhhh.
Samuel
“I also think that being in the same clubhouse with Andrew McCutchen could be a very good thing for Jazz’s maturity….”

Sure.
Look at the smart team player and force that O’Neil Cruz is turning into.
User 1404051815
I like Cutch but there are a lot of strange incidents that go on here that wouldn’t take place with a manager who doesn’t want to be seen as the nice uncle or veterans who aspire to better play
You know, like jogging out ground balls and pop flies, catchers lobbing throws back to pitchers, allowing aggressive runners to move up, cell phones falling out of pockets during slides or a fielder with a handful of sunflower seeds while the ball is live in the outfield
Maybe I’m just a dinosaur, but I’m not sure how Chisholm matures in that setting.
Goku the Knowledgable One
Considering the pirates have to pick and choose I’d pass.
We have enough flawed hitters that haven’t improved.
I’d prefer just a veteran piece like Tommy Pham if they close in on the wildcard
I like Josh Bell too. Him and Pham wouldn’t cost much and, speed aside, will give you similar ABs to Jazz

User 1404051815
Davis is the kind of player who unfortunately will likely blossom somewhere else. Management did a great deal of messing with his head last season and the beginning of this one. Lots of promises that were torpedoed by signing other catchers, playing him in the OF, DH-ing him and making him a regular on the shuttle to Indy.

Too bad the glove sucks, he’d otherwise be a perfect sleeper for Baltimore as an upgrade for Ced Mullins (arb-eligible) and two-year placeholder for Bradfield. Would also formally free up Cowser (overrated bat) as a piece in an SP2/3 deal.
Alas, Elias rightfully prizes up the middle defense. Don’t think Mullins sees regular starts next year, if he’s even on the O’s roster.

As long as it doesn’t cost one of the Big 3 (Teel, Mayer, Anthony) or Duran/Rafaela
User 401527550
Duran? Duran is a top ten baseball player in the league now. Why would he be brought up in trade conversation?
ellisburks
Probably not. They don’t need a CF and he hasn’t played 2B in 2 years.
CardsFan57
I doubt anyone needing a centerfielder is going to trade for Chisholm.
Rsox
Not likely. Middle Infield depth is not a problem for the Sox (if you even consider Chisholm a 2B anymore) and with Duran and Rafaela CF is well covered. Plus they already got rid of the biggest “me first” player on the roster with Verdugo last winter, why would they add another one?
swanhenge
I would hope they pass. He would be a defensive downgrade in the OF. They’ll need a 4th OF when Oneill leaves in the off season, but I doubt Jazz is the guy.
And the double play combo of Story and Wong next year is sounding more promising by the day.

This one belongs to the Reds
The Reds don’t believe in dealing for legit major league outfield talent so I know I don’t have to worry.
Big whiffa
With the reds injury prevention, he’d be out for the season before he ever step on the field lol.
I would like to see him in cincy but think the asking price would be too high. If you are going to trade off 3/4 top prospects, go get Vlad jr
sad tormented neglected mariners fan
The last thing the mariners need is (another) strikeout prone kind of slumping free swinging outfielder
Out of Robert arozarena and Chisholm I think Robert would be the only one that makes sense because he is more consistent when he is actually on the field
CGG12
Robert? As in Luis Robert who has played 70+ games in a season once?
Or are you calling Randy Arozarena “Robert”?
Mjm117
Robert Arozarena is Randy’s younger brother. I believe he was ranked outside the top 1000 in this years International Pool of players. .
BA gave him the same 30 grade hit and power tool but with a 70 grade in speed while FG gave him a FV score of 15.

Normally I’d say Jazz would be a hard pass in Pittsburgh. He just doesn’t play. He had one season where he’s played 100 games and in that season he was below average at the plate. He has had essentially no AAA time. Seems like those 7 games might be Rehab type situations?
That said. He still would be an improvement offensively over Jack and Taylor offensively. based on 2024 performance. Jazz has played this year. Jazz is “cheap” which also looks good on his bill.
Problem is what it would take to get him.
My opinion. I would probably call about him but likely pass. You could go to a Independent or Collegiate game, throw a rock in to the out field and if someone catches it, sign them. Offense probably would be about the same for their center field work. (/s)
If they’re pushing for 2024 then go for Scott even and if getting Jazz in a bundle doesn’t kill the farm take him too. Other wise find a rental and let jack try to work it out in AAA then make a decision in the off season. Davis Coming back and going back into the OF may throw another body at those trying to work it out if Endy comes back next year there will be a crowed Catcher position and Davis is probably the worst defensively.
If this is part of a soft push in 2025 then i’d probably stand back and wait to see what is available going into the last week. Pirates have enough iffy players going into 2025
That said I trust Bens assessment of talent more than previous Pirate GMs If they think Jazz can be healthy and play near league average. I wouldn’t freak out much.
bigdaddyk
I think they should focus on next year and beyond most likely even if they made the playoffs this season they would not have Jones and Skenes available because of inning limitations.
Trade Martinez Taylor and Chapman
whyhayzee
Maybe the Dodgers would trade Kiki for Chapman? Talk about opposites!
User 1404051815
Unless somehow they find a generous GM willing to take one of their many middle infielders on the farm or Chapman, I hope they do nothing until free agency
Let the remaining stud pitchers on the farm mature. Maybe Cruz, Hayes and Gonzales will grow up here. And maybe Nutting will have some sort of epiphany in the shower where calls his GM and tells him to go after a couple legitimate big bats
But they seem to be convinced being a .500 team or slightly below equates to being competitive. These days in the NL, I guess that’s possible
rct
As with any Marlins player who shows even a little bit of promise, it is ‘when’ not ‘if’ he will get traded. He’s got a lot of potential but health and maturity are big factors.
pando8888
The Marlins have wanted Gleybor Torres for some time. Maybe a swap and both the Yankees and Marlins benefit.
sad tormented neglected mariners fan
Jazz hasn’t reached his prime yet and gleyber has
It would be gleyber + prospects for jazz
CGG12
No it wouldn’t. A struggling 2B on an expiring deal wouldn’t make any sense for Miami. They will want prospects and prospects only. One of which they will want to be a more MLB ready arm.
sad tormented neglected mariners fan
Miami could reroute gleyber in a deal
Or Yankees just keep him on the bench
Rsox
At this point Gleyber is a rental and the Yankees would have to kick in at least a pair of prospects for a deal (though if I’m the Marlins i would probably ask for Ben Rice in the deal)
stretch123
They need to get a haul for him and nail the prospects that come back to Miami. Arraez deal is not looking so great right now.
joew
define haul. Given his history doesn’t seem like it would be a lot.
drasco036
AJ Preller is going to trade for him and put him at catcher, that way his team of converted middle infielders can be complete.

Might fit a need for the Braves.

He would have fit nicely on the 75 A’s. You got Vida and Odom along with Fingers snapping in the bullpen.

YourDreamGM
Jazz is above average offense with average defense.

No idea. Probably since he was 5 years old or whenever he started playing baseball. I’m only concerned about the future so don’t care.

Baseball Reference: dWAR of -0.3 this year and -0.7 last year.
No chance I’m paying up for a league average offensive player and below average defense. Maybe trade for a bucket of new balls and some peanuts & crackerjacks.
drasco036
I view JC as a watered down version of Luis Robert jr. Both guys are hurt regularly, they don’t get on base but Robert has a lot more power and is a terrific defender. Jazz to me is still kind of like a prospect because although he’s had some success at the major league level, it hasn’t been a lot and the there isn’t enough body of work to make a solid judgement. I certainly wouldn’t sell out my farm system for him they way I would with Robert.
Pads Fans
His defense is so bad in CF that Chisolm is only on pace for a 1.5 WAR in 2024. That is below MLB average. Add his injury issues to his extreme struggles in the field and Chisolm is not going to net the Marlins as much of a return as many think. My bet? A couple of mid-range prospects, top 10-20 in the trading team’s system, that are in AA or above.
Chicken In Philly?
Tell me you don’t understand WAR in under two sentences…
YourDreamGM
2 top 20 prospects for below average? With that below average 1.5.war just wait for them to dfa him!

CBeisbol
HB
“Tell me you don’t understand WAR in under two sentences…”
Explain?
Chicken In Philly?
An all-star player has 3-6 WAR over a season, typically. If he has 1.4 right now, he’s on pace for a near all-star season. That is above the average major league player. By the end of a season, the average is certainly lower than 2.8.
BaseballisLife
Pads Fans is slightly off on this one but he’s much closer than you are Holden
Chisholm has 1.1 WAR after 57% of games have been played. That is a 1.95-2.0 WAR pace.
baseball-reference.com/players/c/chishja01.shtml
All Star level is 4+ WAR for a season.
Average is 2.0-2.2 depending on the season.
Chisholm is average or below average per WAR. His hitting this season is 12% and his defense is among the worst in baseball in CF.
drasco036
I think you just told the board that you are the one that doesn’t understand WAR.
Chicken In Philly?
Explain, buddy. I know exactly how WAR works. I did misread that he is on pace for this WAR; I thought he’d already attained it. However, he’s still plays above replacement level.
drasco036
He is playing above a replacement level but he’s barely produced above a back up level.
Chicken In Philly?
But he’s also playing out of position, which has to have an impact, and also on a club that isn’t trying to win, which shouldn’t have an impact, but it does. And by shouldn’t I mean ideally; I think many of us who’ve experienced professional arenas where everyone is just hanging on by a thread know this has a negative effect. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Jazz hit the marks evaluators set for him if playing SS or second base and on a contender.
BaseballisLife
Replacement level is 0.0 WAR. That is calling up the average guy from AAA. I would certainly hope that he is better than that.
coachsixstring
Kansas City has a history of Jazz. Sounds like home to me.
Chris Lee
Clever post, but Royals do not need another 2B/CF. They need a traditional corner OF who has some thunder in his bat. Unless you believe in Melendez and Renfroe.
Chicken In Philly?
He’s not a below average player. He lacks that important sixth skill: health. As pointed out, he’s nearly a 30/40 player when looked at over 162 games. He is also playing out of position. The hate this guy gets is unreal.

Being on the Marlins and having value is a trade waiting to happen of course. They have to maintain the ever lasting rebuild. Can’t pay arbitration money. Maybe let’s try another GM. It’s been like 8 months.
ActionDan
Like that’s really a secret. That’s what Miami does. When their star players get closer to FA they trade them for a bunch of prospects so they don’t have to pay them. They are one of the cheapest teams in baseball. I feel bad for their fans. The Heat are good and the Dolphins are good and the Panthers are good so not all is bad for them..
Rays in the Bay
That basically describes TB as well! It’s nice to have an owner who can pony up, cares about fans and community, and is competitive in the right window. The Rays are not included in this
dream_dragon
I love his youth, production, and potential! …Just not for the M’s. We have enough of this type of player.
good vibes only
Would love to see Jazz on the same field as J-Rod. Talk about good vibes and joy of the game. His defense is probably passable at 2B. The bat can’t be worse than Polanco.
Prospect cost has to make sense though. Jazz is a very risky asset. The upside is sky high, but he hasn’t done it and he’s not even that young anymore. His savant page is all blue. I don’t think the prospect cost will be that high.
I don’t think he’s the answer to the M’s problems. They’d need to go get another big bat too, like a Vladdy or a LuBob to hit behind Julio in the 3 or 4 hole. I’d bet my bottom dollar the M’s don’t make any moves and continue to build their prospect hoard because it’s cheap and we’re winning 54% already.
Go Go Power Rangers
@goodvibesonly love that you threw in that last part lol!
Rays in the Bay

Chisholm would be a decent fielder, but unfortunately has jazz hands. Hard to maintain focus in the midst of a bang up song and dance number.
Chris from NJ
One of the most overrated players in the game today. He can’t stay healthy and I don’t know what the metrics are but he looks like a defensive liability out there and way to inconsistent with the stick. Maybe a change of scenery will unlock the tools. It’s gotta be rough playing in Miami.
dpcollects
I won’t say it makes zero sense for the Pirates because they need offensive help, but I don’t see this team competing this year. Do they have 3 excellent starting pitchers? Yes! Do I think they will limit their innings or shut 2 of them down? Not one doubt! Build for 2025. I haaaaate saying that (I want to win NOW, all of Pittsburgh does) but this isn’t their year. They need longterm help at 1B, CF/RF and (like almost all teams) RP.
Blackpink in the area
Chisholm for Davis. I agree it’s not the Pirates year but that deal could still make some sense.
bigdaddyk
I highly doubt the pirates move on from davis this quick they probably move ashcraft has the headliner
Blackpink in the area
Who the heck is Ashcraft?
Dice 66
No on trading Davis or Ashcraft! Ashcraft going in rotation soon.
bigdaddyk
Is he going to the rotation soon? Ortiz deserves another start . Gonzales is probably getting out into the rotation before him. Perez is getting traded but skenes is definitely going on il after the all star game
User 1404051815
You’re all over the map here but I agree, they’d be crazy to deal Ashcraft. Or Chandler. Or Harrington.
Gonzalez just got hammered at Indy and looks suspiciously like the dud we all thought he was. You’re right about Ortiz
But this team can’t hit and is going nowhere
While I agree with dp, it’s hard to imagine Nutting bringing in the kinds of sticks he should.
Blackpink in the area
I don’t think Pirates fans understand what being a buyer at the deadline entails. Teams that want to win dont start talking about how their prospects in AAA are great and need to stick around.
LFGMets (Metsin7) #ConsistentlyBannedBaseballExpert
I wonder if the Marlins would accept a Baty, McNeil, Vasil, Houck package for Chisholm. I’d make that trade in a heartbeat and then extend him. Can even switch Houck with Acuna, I wouldnt mind
Card AG
If he were to go to the pirates he’d be an outfielder.
No need to platoon him with Gonzales at second base. He’s a talented rookie that I think will be fine.

If Cincinnati didn’t just call up Rece Hinds or trade for Slater Jazz would have been a fun fit. Yankees or Phillies may make the most sense to me.
This one belongs to the Reds
Barry Larkin is a Jazz fan so I could see that. But they went the cheap route as always and you have seen the results previously of that kind of thinking.
b00giem@n
Below I posted that Cincinnati should think about moving Marte and Strand, I believe both will disappoint. Jazz would make sense and though I like Fraley and Friedl they’re often injured. Fairchild plays a good defensive but OF is a concern, losing Strand and Marte when you have Collier and Arroyo waiting makes sense.
Goose
Depends on the price. Chisholm seems to be one of those massively talented guys who underachieves. He was the SS of the future, then 2B and now CF. He hasn’t taken any position by the horns and he hasn’t cut his K’s. If he put it together he could be another Soriano and pull off a 40/40 season just like him. It seems like he can’t stay healthy or make any adjustments.
Rays in the Bay
Welcome to the Bendix era Miami. Don’t get too attached to players
BannedMarlinsFanBase
This doesn’t look good. I still say that the Arraez trade was just plain stupid, but clearly this is a puzzling teardown for a rebuild. I don’t think I’ve seen a rebuild that involved proven or improving players in their ages 28 and younger phases in their career. When you make the playoffs mainly with players in that range after a rebuild, you don’t rebuild again.
Again, this is stupid.
So, we had our starting pitching and we had a few offensive pieces to continue building with (Arraez, Jazz, De La Cruz, Burger, Sanchez), but we decide to rebuild when it’s clear where changes need to be made to bring us consistently into contention gpoing forward?
Seriously, we’ve needed a LEGIT Closer…period. And we would have entered the offseason needing a starting Catcher and Shortstop. Then two more position players based on where you want to play Arraez and Burger – if they are you 1B/DH duo, then you needed a 2B and 3B piece. This was absolutely manageable because the Arraez, Jazz, Burger, De La Cruz and Sanchez comboe is a solid group that are cheap enough to allow for strong pieces at a couple of the other positions, and for a Closer.
Again…ridiculous!
Rays in the Bay
Bendix has only been with the Rays since he entered MLB. His brain is computerized. He also made some bad decisions with drafted players. It seems like he played favorites instead of trying to make the team better. Of course, this is all just what I think, but despite the Rays being trash this year, I’m glad bendix is gone.
BannedMarlinsFanBase
It’s a fair assessment and feedback about what you saw when he was there.
For me, he has to hope that the pieces he got for Arraez amount to something. If not, that trade will be remembered as a big part of the Bendix Era here. Not good for him. He won’t live it down any more than Mike Hill can’t live down the Miggy and D-Train trade as well as the Yelich trade. When you trade star players, you have to make sure you don’t come out with a majorly failed return.
And as a Marlins fan, I’m seriously concerned that we have gone from Mike Hill to Kim Ng to Peter Bendix. If Bendix fails, that makes three consecutive poor GMs running the team. It’s crazy considering that we had Dave Dombrowski once upon a time until John Henry ruined things.
Dice 66
Pirates should go after Ward from Angel’s, forget about Chism.
Motor City Beach Bum
Ship Jazz, Berry and Sonoja to the Tigers for Tork, Madden and Bigbie. Lots of guys having down years there on both sides but who have potential. Jazz could play some corner OF with Greene, Meadows and Perez handling CF duties, but mainly 2B with Keith shifting to 1B where some say he will end up anyway. Sonoja looks like a good utility guy at least and Berry, like Tork, might benefit from a change of scenery. Madden and Bigbie hit speed bumps this year but have profiled as everyday players up until then.
b00giem@n
Cincinnati should abandon ship in Strand and Marte now and send them on over.
UncommonSense
Seems like a fit for the Dodgers
Buctober 2
I’d be okay with the Pirates adding him to play RF. He’s a below average CF, and is probably better suited for Second Base, but RF at PNC Park is pretty small.
Pirates don’t need a Second Baseman, they need an Outfielder. Nick Gonzales is fine at Second Base, he’s playing at a 3+ WAR pace since being called up. I’d rather the Pirates pursue someone else, but if he doesn’t cost a lot I’d be okay with Chisholm. They need bats. Play him in RF and platoon him with Olivares.

Was a fan until recently. He did an interview and was pretty nasty airing clubhouse dirt and throwing former teammate under the bus. That and the fact that he has the mentality of a ten year old has turned me off to the dude.
BannedMarlinsFanBase
I understand this. We all have seen the talent, but we’ve also seen the lack of maturity. We also saw this from another talent in our division – Ronald Acuna.
Do we take the risk in keeping him and wait for the hope of him maturing or do we cut bait because something says this is another player that won’t “get it” to do himself and his team any good.
BannedMarlinsFanBase
I wonder who are the people with the “growing belief” – credible people that have spoken to Marlins personnel, fans of other fan bases with pipe dreams, etc? Can go many directions with a comment like that for an article.

“There’s little doubting Chisholm’s raw tools and star-caliber upside.”
He has no ‘star-caliber’ upside. He can’t stay on the field *in his early and mid-20s.*
A MI worth at most 2 WAR whose price is going up thanks to arbitration won’t get you anything like a top prospect. The Mets might want to see if the Marlins are willing to take Brett Baty and one of their #mid-teens starter prospect, though that might be a little insulting given Baty’s MLB numbers to date.
LernersWallet
No thank you

As every M’s fan this season, I’m disappointed with the teams offense thus far, but one average bat is just that. An average bat. I would like to see them pick up a top end left handed reliever. Stanek has done well, but with Brash out and Santos still a bit of a question mark, they need another back end reliever. The optimist would say they have Munoz, Santos and Stanek on the back end, but they are all right handed. Throw in a top shelf left handed reliever and I’d feel a lot more comfortable. One bat is not going to fix the offense. The offense needs to fix themselves at this point.
