The Dodgers announced that they have reinstated Clayton Kershaw from the 60-day injured list, a move that manager Dave Roberts announced last week. To open a 40-man roster spot for him, right-hander Yohan Ramírez has been designated for assignment.
Ramírez, 29, came to the Dodgers from the Mets two months ago in a cash deal. He has since tossed 29 1/3 innings for the Dodgers with a 5.52 earned run average. He probably deserved a bit better than the ERA would indicate, as his .337 batting average on balls in play and 63.3% strand rate are both on the unlucky side. His 20.1% strikeout rate is a bit below par but his 8.2% walk rate and 45.3% ground ball rate are close to average. His 4.47 FIP and 3.95 SIERA each point to him actually being a bit better than his ERA would suggest.
Since the righty is out of options, he has bounced around the league this year, as he also spent time with the Orioles and Mets. Between the three clubs, he has 43 2/3 innings with a 22.1% strikeout rate, 8.5% walk rate, 44.4% ground ball rate, 5.98 ERA, 4.17 FIP and 3.76 SIERA.
It’s now possible that he will end up on his fourth team of the year. The Dodgers will have a week to work out a trade or pass him through waivers, but the waiver process takes 48 hours. That means they have just five days to explore trade talks and the trade deadline is also just five days away at this point.
There figures to be plenty of roster turnover in the coming days thanks to the deadline, with plenty of relievers sure to change hands. It’s possible that some rebuilding clubs will wind up with holes in their bullpens soon and may be interested in grabbing Ramírez to help fill things in for the final few months of the season. Though he is out of options, he can be controlled via arbitration for three seasons beyond this one.

About time!
Wren
honestly felt bad for the guy cause he had nothing and dave just couldn’t stop throwing him in games
Jerry Hairston Jr's Toupee
Dude has the stuff. That’s why he lasts too long. Unfortunately, he just doesn’t have the strong mind for confidence and intestinal fortitude. Had no problems with low leverage. Then management tried to see if he could handle high leverage, and dude choked….
BlueSkies_LA
Not sure if you noticed, but the bullpen has only so many pitchers in it and the manager doesn’t decide who they are. He also makes the decisions on who to play by the analytics. But yeah, the manager’s fault. Always.
dodgers32
@Wren. Had nothing?? His bloated ERA was due, for the most part, from his role to mop up and absorb beatings to save the rest of the bullpen. His performance was better than his ERA, as noted in the story. In several games when the starters s@&t the bed and other relievers were ineffective, he was asked to pitch multiple innings regardless of the outcome. He did what he was asked to do. If the Dodgers had a healthy bullpen, he wouldn’t have been a part. Hopefully he gets another shot with Oakland or the White Sox after the deadline.
Wren
well certainly his recent efforts left a lot to be desired. maybe i could rephrase that and say he had nothing to perform in the role the Dodgers were asking from him. yes he did what he was asked to do and that was clearly more than he is/was capable of. that’s why i said i felt bad for him. always going to be davey apologists but they did have other options besides tossing him to the lions unless they had decided to just use him up until others return. wish him luck.
BlueSkies_LA
Noticing how you avoided my point.
Wren
wasn’t actually addressing that to you but i’m aware you’re a roberts apologist since i’ve read it many times. yes it is his fault if he relies solely on analytics and if a guy is a gascan you don’t throw him in high leverage situations over and over. roberts has never handled his staff well and if you’re good w him then we disagree. your point doesn’t make another any less valid.
BlueSkies_LA
Completely false. I am nobody’s apologist, I just know how baseball works, especially today, and it’s always a little shocking to me to see how so many baseball fans don’t seem to get it at all.
Front offices construct rosters, not managers. Front office compile analytics, not managers. Front offices hire and fire managers and coaches, they don’t hire and fire themselves. Managers who don’t play the front office game plan don’t keep their jobs for long. This is the modern analytics game of baseball so many people claim they love. So love that, until it hurts.
Bottom line, the only person who has to be good with Dave Roberts is Andrew Friedman, and clearly he is good with him. And clearly if Roberts went Friedman would hire someone else who also implements his front office game plan. So fundamentally your point is not valid because it isn’t supported by the reality of the game the way it works today.
Wren
seems to me the champion Rangers just so happen to have a less than full analytic manager. saying that’s how its done now doesn’t excuse someone like dave robots from being part of the problem. since when does “just doing my job” become good enough? i’m not debating whether of not AF pulls the strings even though he denies it. thought it was all about winning but hey you’re the expert apparently.
BlueSkies_LA
Sigh. No, I’m not the expert, apparently or in any other way. I’m simply watching how baseball is played today and as someone who’s been a fan for a long time, it has changed. A lot. The change is the result of analytics. The Dodgers have invested millions, probably more than any team to build one of the game’s most sophisticated analytics operations. So go ahead, you tell me if a manager is expected manage by those numbers, or not, and how a manager keeps his job if he doesn’t.
Wren
sigh. typically what a Mensa member might say when a serf is wasting their time. doubt you’re a member of that club so suffer a bit more. no one is debating whether or not analytics is the bb du jour of the moment in the game. whats openly debatable if whether or not it should be used in all circumstances especially when guys are hot or not. robots goes to the r/l matchups etc every time. no one needs to guess and he’s out managed on the regular. you like him. i don’t and think he’s done less w more than maybe any manager not named Bobby Cox. he fills out the lineup and calls on the bp so yeah he still has something to do w success and failure regardless of the FO. btw why can’t anyone bunt on this team? that was a major part of dave’s game. he’s a middle manager doing what he’s told w zero imagination. that’s what i see. you see something else well God bless you and carry on.

Crazy how this guy stuck around so long considering how fast we’ve turned and burned relievers over the last few years. Adios Yohan.
mlbdodgerfan2015
I think the whole world knew this move was coming today. He ate some innings up and lost plenty of games for the Dodgers.
Shrutefarm
While we could argue he never should have been on the roster to begin with except for ravaging injuries to the bullpen, I will point out that in the previous 21 appearances prior to the start of his last 4 appearance meltdown, Yohan Ramirez had an ERA of 2.18 with 1 save and 3 holds.
It wasn’t all bad for him.
With that said, it appears his shelf life has expired. I wish him well.
Mendoza Line 215
When Ramirez was with the Pirates those were his results too.
He would look very good for a few games then be bad for a few games.
He has really good stuff but no consistency and walks enough that teams eventually pull the plug.
BlueSkies_LA
And I would point out that his career stats are mediocre so expecting something other than mediocrity out of him is a fool’s errand.
baseballer
Well since you know so much he will be claimed and will continue pitching in the bigs. If not claimed now he will still pitch somewhere in the future. His stuff is actually good. I know he hasn’t been good with walks and hits lately that comes with not throwing enough strikes. But his stuff is actually good. As well as the “dumpster diving” on Honeywell. Sheesh. You sure know baseball.
BlueSkies_LA
When I don’t know something I look it up. You could too, and then you too would also know that his stuff is mediocre. Strictly a fill-in journeyman type. Honeywell. is also below average in every pitching category. These types catch on with teams as stopgaps. That’s how they get to be on five teams in as many seasons as Honeywell has, or seven in five as Ramirez has. They are not keepers. You could look that up, too. So sheesh, yourself.
baseballer
lol keep sitting on your couch. It appears Honeywell is carrying the Dodgers pen right now. Crazy. You were wrong from the beginning and you are wrong now. Below avg pitchers aren’t in the bigs hahahaha. Wannabe GM. Bet your chair smells. Looks like Honeywell had another good one today. Are you happy about your team winning or do you hate that too?
baseballer
Hey Ramirez to the Red Sox! Stuff is too nasty. Since it’s below avg. you know a lot. His sinker runs 20 inches. You don’t know anything. Stick to the couch
fox471 Dave
Hard to believe he lasted long enough to lose three games singlehandedly, including last night. This guy was toxic. I figured he had pictures of Roberts doing something naughty. Nothing else explains his continued use.
BlueSkies_LA
Since when do managers hire players? Please explain your theory.
fox471 Dave
Gee CB, your unnecessary snark hurt my feelings. Then, I realized that your attack probably was just you having a bad day. I get it.

Didn’t have my glasses on so it looked like a photo of Bauer walking off the mound. Then I reminded myself that scumbag will never be on a MLB mound again and that made my day…
Sorry not sorry, incels.

Yes! It’s always unfortunate when something like this-DFA-happens. But that’s baseball. He’ll either get picked up by another MLB team, or he may have to go down and tweak his mechanics or something. He throws hard. But my Dodger’s simply can’t tolerate his 100mph beachball anymore.
