TODAY: Right-hander Colten Brewer is being placed on the 60-day injured list with a left hand fracture after punching a wall in frustration following his outing against the Angels yesterday, according to Patrick Mooney of The Athletic. The move clears space on the club’s 40-man and active rosters for the promotion of Bigge. Brewer, 31, has a 5.66 ERA in 20 2/3 innings with the Cubs this year despite a solid 3.12 FIP and a 23.2% strikeout rate.
July 6: The Cubs are poised to select the contract of right-hander Hunter Bigge, according to a report from MLB Network’s Jon Morosi. Chicago will need to make corresponding moves to clear space on both the active and 40-man rosters to accommodate Bigge’s selection prior to tomorrow’s game against the Angels.
Bigge, 26, was a 12th-round pick by the Cubs in the 2019 draft out of Harvard. He impressed in 16 innings of work between the rookie and Low-A levels of the minors the year he was drafted with a 1.13 ERA and a 34.4% strikeout rate in that cameo, but his developmental trajectory was thrown off course somewhat by the cancelled minor league season in 2020. The righty was assigned to the High-A level when minor league play resumed in 2021 but struggled with that assignment, posting a 5.66 ERA in 17 1/3 innings, and he struggled similarly in a 2022 campaign split between the High-A and Double-A levels.
Fortunately for Bigge, he started to turn things back around in Double-A last year. The right-hander posted a solid 3.50 ERA in 43 2/3 innings of multi-inning relief work at the level during the 2023 campaign, and he backed those numbers up with strong peripherals. His 28.8% strikeout rate was impressive and while his 11.4% walk rate was certainly elevated, he helped to make up for it by generating grounders at a strong 44.7% clip and allowing just three home runs. The 25-year-old’s performance was enough to earn him a call-up to the Triple-A level late last year, although he struggled badly in that assignment with an ugly 8.71 ERA in 10 1/3 innings that saw him allow more walks (13) than strikeouts (12).
Bigge’s return to Triple-A was slowed this year by an oblique injury that has cost him much of the season to this point, but after returning to the level on June 4 he’s done nothing but dominate. In 11 2/3 innings of work at the highest level of the minors this year, the righty has allowed just one run on a solo homer while striking out 44.2% of opponents. Walks are still a concern for Bigge, who has allowed free passes to 14% of opponents this year, but the Cubs clearly believe the 26-year-old is ready for his first taste of big league action and want to see how his high-octane arsenal led by an upper-90s fastball will play in the major leagues.
The bullpen has been something of an Achilles’ heel for the Cubs this year as they’ve scuffled to a 41-49 record despite the eighth-best rotation in baseball by ERA. The club’s top three leverage relievers from last season’s bullpen—Adbert Alzolay, Julian Merryweather, and Mark Leiter Jr.— are all currently on the injured list and have been joined by key offseason addition Yency Almonte. Meanwhile, top offseason relief signing Hector Neris has struggled badly with a 4.11 ERA and 5.02 FIP in 30 2/3 innings this year, leaving the club with very few reliable relief arms to lean on this year. That’s led the club to lean increasingly heavily on unproven youngsters like Luke Little and Porter Hodge to carry the load in the majors, and now Bigge figures to get a similar opportunity to prove himself capable of contributing to a big league relief corps low on quality options.

How about we call him the Notorious BIG instead?

Non move. More interesting will be the 40 man cut vs the call up.
Kilian started rehab also. I am far.more interested in Kilian getting a.real.shot as he has closer upside
mike127
40 man move can be real easy……Brennan Davis has a broken back–probably put him on 60 day. Nick Madrigal has broken hand—put him on 60 day (if you can put minor leaguers on 60) OR–since now we know this move is because Brewer broke his hand punching a wall—put him on 60 day.
drasco036
If you are on the 40 man, you can be moved to the 60 day IL but it also starts a players “service time” hence why Amaya cannot be sent down.

He punched the wall to save himself being DFA’d anyway. His last 2 appearances were as pathetic as it gets.

That’s the long and short of it.

I was hoping the Cubs would start promoting some guys up to see what they have. They certainly have nothing to lose.
I haven’t seen much of Bigge – but I think it’s time to move more players (pitchers) up, in this time of need. Birdsell is another guy that could cover some innings until a few others get healthy.
Other teams in contention (Phillies, Dodgers and others) are calling guys who are not top prospects up, to make starts. Hell, even Keuchel is back. There’s no harm at this point in the Cubs using the 2nd half to evaluate guys for next year. But they also need to make room with trading some OFers to make room. A guy like Triantos needs to begin getting time in LF at Iowa.
Unclemike1525
Triantos needs to be in AAA and play in the IF. Should have been done when Bote came up but again Hoyer would rather sign castoffs than promote our own. Bigge has 100 in his bag. He also has walks in his bag like the rest of the young arms. Take the good with the bad. Birdsell is in AA and is a short armer. Think Carson Fulmer. They usually have control problems but Birdsell is pretty consistent there. Might be an exception but he’s not ready for Prime Time. Should have started promoting a month ago. Instead of promoting prospects like Triantos Hoyer has signed Bozo’s like Reinheimer and Hager. And before you ask yeah, Everyone is going Who?
16
He’s signing depth pitching because we’ve lost about 10 combined starters and relievers. You don’t promote players, especially pitchers when they aren’t ready. Biggs has earned a shot, and Horton would’ve too had he not gotten hurt. Others need to step up at AAA and AA and earn their chance. But when you have that many major league pitching injuries you need depth for the minors to patch the call ups.
Unclemike1525
None of the guys I mentioned is a P. Nice try.Except Birdsell and I said he’s not ready.
SeanStL
Horton wasn’t looking good. I wouldn’t assume a call up was in order.
Dogbone
uncle, why do you THINK Triantos needs to play in the IF.
He’s very unlikely to be Hoerners successor, he’s not a SS and Shaw likely is ahead of him in the pecking order for 3B.
Unclemike1525
How’s he going to play OF with Happ, Suzuki, PCA, Bellinger?, Caissie, Canario ahead of him? Remains to be seen if the Cubs will move any of them. He can play almost anywhere except SS and C and has for Tenn. He’s not exactly a great OF though. Break glass in case of emergency type. The Cubs might have to move Hoerner. If not he’s surely better than the collection of bench dweebs they currently use.
drasco036
We’ve seen Hoyer be aggressive with Morel and Hoerner, getting called up from AA. The Cubs brass could be looking at Triantos as a man without a home (much like Hoerner was and Morel) hence getting him reps in other positions. Could be, not saying he is. All I really know is Triantos isn’t said to be a very good fielder but has a monster arm.
seth3120
Yeah it may be a sign of how low they’ve sunk but that’s the reality. It’s too late to sign an aging veteran in hopes he can build trade value. The Cubs aren’t so bad they can’t compete in 25 so bring up some young guys that might fit their time line and see how they do for the season so they know where their biggest offseason holes to fill are. The Bellinger options really hamstring his value at the deadline. A straight one year deal they could move him for value kicking in some money but teams won’t wanna take the risk of paying him next year if he isn’t gonna earn his contract offensively. They have their center fielder in PCA who might be the best in MLB already defensively

Trade Happ while he’s hot(ish), seiya if you can get a buyer and Bellinger. Restock the monies and bring the kids up to play. Dfa Bote, Wisdom, Hendricks, masterbuoni while you’re at it. I would say Add Swanson but he is showing that he is horrible. This team blows so blow it up.

Yes, this team blows. Yes, time to DFA under performing vets. But blow it up? It’s possible. No baseball expert. Just a long time fan. My thoughts are a directive will come from ownership to cut costs at the deadline. Most everyone will be on the table. Happ, Suzuki, Bellinger, Tallion even Hoerner. Hoyer will try to get the best returns possible. Not all these players will be moved but I can see at least two. The Cubs will head into 2025 with plenty of money off the payroll and very likely a new President of Baseball Operations and GM. Time for a fresh start going into 2025.
Unclemike1525
The whole Front Office Dynamic needs to be figured out. Hoyer isn’t a good GM. Hawkins is an enigma. Hoyer doesn’t need to be fired but he needs to stay in his lane. POBO is his title and he needs to oversee not execute. They need a GM who can work the Cap, Tax whatever you want to call it. If you’re not going over it needs to be managed better and Hoyer is bad at it. The whole Minor League system, Scouting staff and Player Personnel departments are all top notch and need no changes. We need a GM who knows how to manage that and he needs to be given a free rein. Team lacks a direction. Play young , Old, Use the farm don’t? Right now it’s throw crap at the wall and see what sticks. And it’s not working. If you want to play under the Tax that’s fine with me. That’s not cheap that’s smart. The Tax is like 260 million. That’s more than enough to put a Championship team on the field, IF YOU SPEND IT CORRECTLY. They haven’t since the sell off.
drasco036
Hot-ish? Fifth most productive outfielder (not just left fielder) in baseball over the past month, over names like Judge and Soto.

Happ has to approve any trade. It’s easier said than done. Don’t know why they gave him a full NTC.

You should deny player the paid injury list when they do stupid things like this!
Prsabroso
We should never rejoice when a human being gets hurt. However, we can certainly rejoice that a player was stupid after being bad, and he did his own damage. Oh what the heck, enjoy this self-inflicted injury. At least we can see if another young guy turns out like Porter H or is more like Colton B…
