The Cubs have acquired right-hander Nate Pearson in a trade with the Blue Jays, according to ESPN’s Jesse Rogers and Jeff Passan (X link). Toronto will receive minor league outfielder Yohendrick Pinango and minor league infielder Josh Rivera in return. The Jays also placed closer Jordan Romano on the 60-day injured list.
Pearson was selected 28th overall in the 2017 draft, just one pick after the Cubs took left-hander Brendon Little (who currently pitches for the Jays). A broken arm and an oblique injury limited him to just 1 2/3 innings in 2018, but he re-emerged with a vengeance in 2019, rocketing up the minor league ladder to Triple-A Buffalo by season’s end and establishing himself as one of baseball’s top pitching prospects. MLB Pipeline and Baseball America both ranked him within the overall top 10 of their preseason prospect rankings in advance of the 2020 season, and that year saw Pearson make his MLB debut in the form of five appearances for the Jays during the pandemic-shortened campaign.
Since pitching 101 2/3 innings in the minors in 2019, Pearson has barely topped that total in terms of big league experience, with 115 2/3 frames on his resume in the Show. Pearson has posted a 5.21 ERA, 25.2% strikeout rate, and 11.6% walk rate in the majors, with a 15.1% homer rate contributing to that unimpressive ERA.
All but five of Pearson’s 93 big league appearances have come as a reliever, as Toronto shifted Pearson to the bullpen in an effort to keep him healthy after a number of injury setbacks. From 2020-22, Pearson had to deal with such varied issues as a flexor strain, a lat strain, mono, groin problems, and a hernia surgery, which limited his time on the mound and prevented him from any MLB action whatsoever in 2022.
Pearson has been healthy over the last two years, but his performance has been inconsistent as best, dashing the Blue Jays’ hopes that Pearson could at least become a high-leverage relief weapon. He is one of the league’s harder throwers with a fastball that averages 97.6mph, but batters have teed off that heater to the tune of a .342 average this season. Pearson’s slider has been a much more effective offering, but opposing hitters have learned to lay off the slider and chase the fastball, to great success.
Pearson recently expressed an interest in returning to a starting role, which would’ve seemingly been something the Jays would’ve been open to given their rotation and the organization’s overall uncertain future direction in the midst of an underwhelming season. Today’s trade, however, closes the door on Pearson’s Blue Jays tenure entirely, and it perhaps hints at a change in Toronto’s plans for the trade deadline. The Jays had reportedly been only planning to move rental or shorter-term players, while keeping a lot of their core in place for another run at contention in 2025.
Since Pearson is only in his first year of arbitration eligibility and is controlled through the 2026 campaign, the deal could signal the Jays’ willingness to expand their list of trade candidates, perhaps if the club is considering that some level of a rebuild is in order. Then again, it could be that the Blue Jays were open to moving Pearson simply because they no longer consider him any kind of core piece — a letdown for the franchise, given that Pearson seemed like a future cornerstone not long ago.
The Cubs are struggling through a disappointing year of their own, with a 49-56 record in comparison to Toronto’s 47-56 mark. President of baseball operations Jed Hoyer said earlier this week that the club is already looking ahead to 2025 in terms of potential deadline pickups, and to that end Pearson represents an interesting change-of-scenery candidate. The righty turns 28 next month, so there’s still lots of time for a second act to his career as either a reliever or starter. Between Pearson’s prospect pedigree and two years of remaining arb control, there’s some major buy-low upside for the Cubs if the right-hander is able to find his form in Wrigleyville. Peter Gammons (via X) reports that the Red Sox were also interested in Pearson, though it stands to reason that the Jays might’ve preferred to move the righty outside the AL East.
Baseball America ranks Pinango 17th among Cubs prospects, while MLB Pipeline has him 29th. The outfielder was an international signing in 2018 and he has spent the majority of his career in high-A ball, only reaching Double-A for the first time this season and hitting .223/.316/.345 with four homers in 225 PA for Double-A Tennessee. BA’s scouting report notes that the 22-year-old’s attempts to focus on adding power in 2022-23 led to diminished numbers overall, but he has shown a better approach in 2024 and posted improved hard-contact numbers and a better chase rate. Defensively, Pinango is an average defender probably best suited to left field or even first base over the long term, and the latter position would naturally put more pressure on him to deliver more at the plate.
Rivera is 23rd on Pipeline’s list but wasn’t included in Baseball America’s Cubs top 30, perhaps owing to his .169/.277/.260 slash line over 253 PA at Double-A Tennessee this season. Like Pinango, Rivera is also playing Double-A ball for the first time, and it has been a pretty quick progression since Rivera was only drafted last year, in the third round. The University of Florida product has played mostly shortstop as a pro with some second base and third base time, and Pipeline projects him as “an offensive-minded utilityman” given his raw skills at the plate and his ability to competently play multiple positions, even if he isn’t a standout in the field.
Rogers and Passan (X link) were the first to report that Pearson was heading to Chicago. ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel reported (via X) Pinango’s inclusion in the deal, while Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi and Arden Zwelling (X link) reported Rivera’s inclusion.
Simm
Probably because the cubs are about to sell some parts and need some fill ins.
Sheep8
Sounds good…sell the expiring parts and build parts for the future
seth3120
That was my thinking this has to be a move in prelude to the next move to subtract
deweybelongsinthehall
The missing additional piece needed that will be added to a season turnaround trade that saves the Cubbies’ season (LOL). By the way, why is this article on the Red Sox feed? I don’t see a connection.
frankf
I’m always for low risk fliers, especially at this point in what is essentially a sunk season. Usually, you end up with Jacob Turner, Mike Olt, or Ian Stewart, but sometimes you get Jake Arrieta.
Dustyslambchops23
We all knows hes going to put it all together eventually, was just never going to be for the jays
vikingbluejay67
I don’t think so. He’s just not very good.
Dustyslambchops23
Yah true, there’s never been a guy who throws 100, changes scenery and unlocks something.
Akakak
Hmmm somebodys talking about the big unit
User 401527550
Because there isn’t 5 guys on every team that throw 100 and aren’t elite.
Dustyslambchops23
Pearson is 15th in the entire league in average MPH. So no there is not 5 guys on every team that have his velocity
vikingbluejay67
You could be right. But as a Jays fan he is/was incredibly frustrating to watch. Hope he figures things out.
User 401527550
Well he sure isn’t 15th in the league in effectiveness. Doesn’t matter how hard you throw if the ball has no movement.
jz fan
ever hear of a guy named Nolan Ryan?
User 401527550
Nolan Ryan was never bad. He walked a lot of people but was still really good. Nothing similar all.
stymeedone
He’s the next Joel Zumaya. 100 mph doesn’t guarantee anything.
johnrealtime
You are moving goalposts
I Believe We Can Win
That doesn’t count minor leaguers. Every team definitely has flame throwing arms in their system somewhere
cbhlarms28
Much different era as in time frame back then. 96 mph plus these days? A dime a dozen.
ellisd19830
Jamie moyer?
myaccount2
He just needs to work on control. At least there are tinkers that can fix that. His 97.6 average FB that touches 101 can’t be taught. His elite K rate can’t be taught either. There is still loads of potential there for a 27 year old.
I Believe We Can Win
People said the same thing about Luis Patino and Javy Guerra once upon a time as well
myaccount2
All three of those guys are completely different cases.
Pearson is already a decent MLB bullpen piece, so he’s not really comparable to the other two. It’s a lot easier to help a decent player reach their ceiling than a bad player or a guy with injury issues.
Patino might have found success if not for his injury trouble. That can happen to any pitcher. He appeared to be a potentially decent pen contributor last season before his elbow went out.
Guerra’s issues were always so pronounced that he was never likely to sniff his ceiling. He had problems beyond just control. There’s a reason he started off as a position player before switching to pitching.
Dustyslambchops23
Were they the number 8 prospect in all of baseball and played for an organization that has a bottom 5 track record of pitcher development ?
I Believe We Can Win
Patino was top 25 and dumped by two of the better pitching development teams in padres top 15 and rays top 3 who were unable to fix him.
mlb1225
Eh, maybe, maybe not. For every guy with great stuff but bad command that figures it out, 10 more flameout and don’t that you never hear about. We’ll see what happens.
Gator50
Totally true. Although for what Jed gave up for him, it’s not a bad lottery ticket purchase.
kenly0
Could be a nice buy low guy depending on who they gave up.
Digdugler
but why?
Blackpink in the area
Because he has upside and the Cubs aren’t playing to win in 2024. Of course you could say that about the Jays too but I guess they are giving up on him.
Digdugler
I am a jays fan, but what is the upside? He is 28 and has a career -1 bWAR, 5.11 FIP, 1.461 WHIP. Jays are even worse than the cubs though both now and in the future, but my guess is they are swapping failed prospects.
drasco036
See Julian Merryweather.
redmatt
If you charge money for tickets, you should play to win. Sorry for the old-fashioned attitude.
Blackpink in the area
They are doing something they think will help them win the future.
C-Daddy
The Jays have a bad MLB team and a bad minor league system. A complete fire sale is needed. “Playing to win” makes no sense. There are no quick fixes for this team.
User 3222006999
Everybody always thinks they can take somebody and ” Fix” them. Pinango is a decent prospect who was never going to see Wrigley Field. The Cubs already have guys who throw 100 but are young and still figuring it out. The Cubs already have a future Closer we just don’t know who it is or exactly when he will show up. Hoyer has been fairly effective at picking up pieces and turning them into reliable arms. Probably more like the Scouts are pretty good at it but it looks like we’re about to sell some more bullpen pieces away and start over every year. Sad.
high_upside
The realities of the business mean that sometimes you have to lose to win later. It’s not old fashioned or new fashioned, it’s just the way pro sports work.
its_happening
Are you asking on behalf of the Jays or the Cubs?
Edp007
Why?
DoItDoug
Tiedermann was the next can’t miss pitcher after Pearson. He gets season ending surgery and Pearson traded same day.
Samuel
Yes….
Pearson was one of dozens of highly ranked pitchers the past 5 years that were going to become their teams ace and dominate. If we go back we can see that just about every team had not just one, but multiple candidates.
Why I love the comment section here. Every crummy team is going to be real real good in 2 years.
CTS4
Nate was drafted by shatkins and never really panned out…
Good Luck Nate, you’re lucky to get away from the 2 Cleveland Clowns …!!
CarolinaCubsandKush
Jed… why?
stu18germanator
Nate never panned out. Maybe a change of scenery will be a nice reset for him. Getting anything in return at this point is a win for the Jays.
Sportsfantatic
Plus The Jays were dumping him come August or end of the yr might as well give teams a look at him.
rondon
Hoyer’s gonna dump some $. I’m betting Taillon.
hiflew
Could be a change of scenery swap. Not sure who on the Cubs would qualify as a similar COS guy. Maybe Nick Madrigal.
Sportsfantatic
Madrigal is out for the year unless they are picking him up for next yr.
hiflew
Hadn’t heard that. Man, the older I get the harder it is to keep up with teams that are not MY team.
statefarm44
If that’s who they gave up … sign me up everyday and twice on Sunday … Madrigal is trash and that’s saying something considering Miles M is on the main roster
hiflew
I honestly have no clue. Just an educated guess since Toronto is down a couple middle infielders right now.
sad tormented neglected mariners fan

Jake Arrieta Jitters… Arrieta came thru Baltimore system struggled the Cubs took a flyer on him got sent him to AZ to the Pitching Lab he got things figured out rest is history.. Flash forward several years Nate Pearson may not be a Arrieta but, Send him to the Pitching Lab see what you can fix then enroute him to AAA get few Relief appearances then call him up. My guess iss its depth also he controlled a few more yrs soo he could be a weapon for their bullpen next year iff needed
C-Daddy
For every Jake Arrieta there are many many former top pitching prospects that completely flame out. If it were so easy to just send a guy to the “Pitching Lab” to figure things out, the Jays would have just done that.
Sportsfantatic
The Cubs must see something.. His fastball isnt dead yet. Sometimes moving to a different organization helps.. If it makes you feel better Balimore never allowed Jake to throw his Cutter with his cross arm delivery. They told him it would tear his arm up and he wont get much success. The cubs sent him to Iowa told him to work on his cutter and it ended up being his Knockout punch.
Blah blah blah
different organizations have different philosophies & pitching infrastructures.
For instance if a foolish organization that can’t develop pitching like the white sox dumps a high upside pitcher, and a juggernaut organization with emphasis on player development like the Dodgers picks him up, you buy that stock immediately. The Dodgers see something that the boneheads with the Sox don’t see.
This was also the case with the Royals prior to this year. Couldn’t develop pitching for the life of them. Blue Jays are showing signs of this lately. Not being able to graduate their pitching prospects.
Cubs have this thing they call the pitching lab, architected by now Boston GM Craig Breslow, the expert on pitch shapes. Its turned around the careers of guys like Mark Leiter Jr, Julian Merryweather, Javier Assad, Scott Effross, turning them from dime-a-dozen minor leaguers into useful big league pieces. Blue Jays dont have one of these.
The point is – These buy low take-a-flyer-on moves are more than just a coin flip. Pay attention to who is giving up on, and who is going after these types. Some orgs have a better track record than others.
revolver
Every team has those successes and failures it’s not unique to the cubs or Jay’s.
harrycarey
Nobody had a pitching lab back in 2014
stymeedone
Does he even have options left? Doubt he can be sent down.
mlb1225
He has one option left, according to FanGraphs.
KamKid
He does this year but not next. Unless he’s one of those guys who was injured so much that he qualifies for a fourth option year. That’s possible. He was already arbitration eligible despite only a small handful of innings.
BetterMuppet:JUDGEorKERMIT?
Are the jays getting Bellinger? (I don’t care how bad his season has been we need a left handed power bat in our 3-4-5)
What’s the return….
georgebell 2
#Bluejays return for Nate Pearson from #Cubs is “a AA shortstop and a high-A pitcher, both with real upside.”
georgebell 2
Now reported as Yohendrick Pinango

James Triantos and Jax Wiggins?

@georgebell 2
Everytime I hear that a ball player has ‘upside’ I can’t help but hear the voice of a used car salesman describing a car with the phrase ‘low mileage.
jhanley108
The guy who made this mess is going to fix it? Seems like a great idea.
Datashark
nothing says a world series run more than getting a relief pitcher with over 5 era.
Mehmehmeh
Isn’t this the guy who wants to transition to SP? Maybe that’s the longer term plan after unloading a more expensive rotation piece.
high_upside
He wants to but he’s in the bullpen in a last resort move to try to prevent him from being constantly injured and ineffective as a starter.

Jed Hoyer about to trade the Cubs future away trying to save his job
georgebell 2
He traded spare parts for a project RP. It’ll be ok.
Prsabroso
George, you might be right. And I do hope he can help our bullpen. But, even the 29th rated prospect is a but much imo. I really hope we get some better prospects in the next trades.
User 3222006999
Pinango was never going to make it to the Cubs. He was the 29th ranked prospect but about 8th in line to get to the bigs. Plus the 30th ranked guy Rosario is a 5 tool player who is 20 years old and should be ranked way higher IMO. He’s a pretty decent LH bat and OF. He can help the Jays.
User 3222006999
Rivera is in a long line of Cubs SS prospects and one of the lowest. Guy is at AA but not hitting very well. Decent glove but I doubt he amounts to a whole lot. Good Luck.
Blah blah blah
@ Prsabroso: It doesnt matter what his ranking is – he is a low ceiling guy organizational type.
There is not much difference between the 29th ranked guy in a system and the 59th ranked guy, I promise you.
TBJowers
Congratulations Jed you traded away two prospects for a pitcher with a career era over 5.00. I hope he gets fired
Sportsfantatic
Pinnago was a rule 5 protection next yr obvi they dont see a 40 man roster spot in him.. Rivera drafted last yr hasnt hit since drafted soo not a bad deal for two prospects that wont net much
iml12
He traded away nothing for a guy that throws 100. Not a bad flyer. With that said Jed should be on the hot seat. This team doesn’t look close to contending. They should have spent money on an actual closer and third baseman last off-season instead of the nickel and dime bullpen and madrigal/mastrbouni/wisdom crap show.

It’s about time. Pearson has been a huge disappointment.

Not an impressive return for 2 1/2 years of control on Pearson, but I guess his stock has fallen that low.
Sportsfantatic
Pearson wouldve been DFA this Fall soo for what they got is a good return. Obvi They tried Him as a SP it failed next is RP and he failed. Soo all your limited to is low leverage situations and your really dont use a guy like him in that position at all.. Its a good move for both parties. It gives Nate a chance to save his career gives him another chance at crafting his game with what he has left.. He will float arround the minors if he dont show signs of improvement. Iff things dont pan out ge loves baseball Japan and the independant circuit is availible
MysteryWhiteBoy13
On the same day that Nate Pearson 2.0 announces a Tommy John surgery upcoming, they trade the real thing.
Edp007
Jays get a shmendrick 🙂

The shmendrick foot kan America!
Swingandamiss
Cubs need a catcher. All moves point to align them up to go after one.
Sportsfantatic
sadly they arnt in dire need but grabbing Low level depth and upper level Experiance wont help. It all points to a Amaya Ballesteros Catching Tandem next yr. Not opening day but by the all star break. My guess is they roll with Nido and The other guy they just called up with Amaya unless one becomes avail. Then next year you sign veteran help.
User 3222006999
Ballesteros will probably never catch in the Major Leagues. He’s not a very good receiver. He will probably end up trade bait or a DH since his only other position is 1B and Busch seems entrenched there. Kid has a Major League bat but he’s another Morel. Bat without a position.
Swingandamiss
Ballesteros is two years away. Cubs will end up going after Luis Campusano for Taillon and an upper level prospect (likely a pitcher). I seriously doubt they sell just to pick up MORE prospects.
Bucket Number Six
If he hits in AAA, he’ll be up quicker than you think. There’s always the DH slot, especially with the way that the Cubs offense is going.
JoeBrady
Pearson and Manoah are the two guys that killed the Jays. The looked like 6.5 year each of being #1/2 types.
MysteryWhiteBoy13
Tiedemann is quickly being added to the list
Brick House Coffee Tables Inc
Pearson wants to start. The Cubs can have him do some 2-inning relief outings, especially since for them this August and September are basically tryouts. If it doesn’t work out, they non-tender him and move on. They were going to have to release a bunch of guys from the minors anyway to roster their draft picks.
The rest of this season is about getting Brown and Wicks healthy, figuring out what’s happening with Assad, and getting the three of them to a reasonable amount of innings to set up for 2025.
its_happening
Jays babied him from the jump, he settled into that comfort zone and then he didn’t get enough innings in to harness his ability. Then we wonder why he couldn’t command his fastball? That’s one reason why having inning limits is a problem.
Pearson might turn it around, might not. It is too bad he hasn’t reached the level he and others expected of him.
KamKid
Pearson is a big change of scenery guy. He has really never found success but has never really settled into any identity. Constantly tinkering with the pitch mix and the delivery. Chasing trends half a step behind the arrest of the league. There are raw ingredients, but it’s just been such a smattering of all kinds of stuff, it’s hard to really know what his strengths are.
jimmertee
Pearson is a one inning max effort guy. Part of running a good baseball team is knowing who a guy is, the identity at the MLB level. And the jays messed him up bigtime.
Pearson will never be a good starter unless it is a one inning opener. He’ll never be a consistent multi inning reliever. Normally I am copmlimentary to the Jays pitching coach Pete Walker, but all that past effort nonsense about trying him starting just hurt Pearson again and again. The Jays mismanaged Pearson from day one.
Moneyballer
Such a cubs move to make. Daddy I can fix him! When was the last time to cubs went for it? Like really tried to make their team better? Hoyer has got to go!
