7:34PM: Correa won’t participate in the All-Star Game. The Rangers announced that Corey Seager has been named to the AL All-Star squad as Correa’s replacement.
4:15PM: Carlos Correa wasn’t in the Twins lineup yesterday or today due to what was initially described as a bruised right heel. However, Correa and Minnesota manger Rocco Baldelli told reporters (including The Athletic’s Dan Hayes) that the shortstop is dealing with a case of plantar fasciitis in his right foot, as was revealed in an MRI taken last night.
This is the second consecutive year that plantar fasciitis has emerged as an issue for Correa, though last season’s injury was located in his left foot. Correa described his current issue as not “as bad as last year. Last year I played through a lot of pain. The first game I played here was discomfort.” A trip to the injured list doesn’t appear to be in the works for now, as Correa didn’t even entirely rule out playing in Tuesday’s All-Star Game, though he noted that the All-Star break will be helpful in managing his foot problem.
“We’re taking the precautions that we need to take right now before it gets worse,” Correa said. “We kind of know how to manage it, all the info we have from last year. I think I’ll be ready for the second half.”
Plantar fasciitis is ultimately a pain-tolerance type of injury, so theoretically, Correa could be able to stay on the field as long as he is able to handle what can be a very painful case of inflammation in the foot and heel area. Of course, playing and playing well are two different things, as Correa’s attempts to largely try and play the pain in his left foot in 2023 resulted in subpar performance. Correa hit .230/.312/.399 over 580 plate appearances and also had below-average defensive metrics at shortstop, and he held off an IL trip until late September after Minnesota had clinched a playoff berth.
Correa made it clear that he doesn’t want a repeat of 2023, as “I don’t just want to be a body on the field….Last year, one thing I learned is people don’t care if you go out there and play hurt. They’re always going to talk about your performance and that only. I’m just going to make sure that when I’m on the field, I’m not just somebody that’s just standing there. I’m going to be Carlos Correa.”
Though Correa missed a couple of weeks in April with a minor oblique strain, he has certainly returned to his usual form this season. Correa is hitting .308/.377/.520 with 13 homers over 317 PA, with his 152 wRC+ is on pace to be a personal best of a full season. His performance is a big reason why the Twins find themselves again in a postseason position heading into the All-Star break, though Minnesota is in a wild card slot, and entered today’s action 4.5 games behind the Guardians for first place in the AL Central.
A tight pennant race will again make Correa eager to play as often as possible, so he and the Twins will have to be careful about how they manage his playing time in order to keep him both healthy and effective. The overall health of the Twins’ infield is another issue, as Royce Lewis, Jose Miranda, Alex Kirilloff, Austin Martin, and Kyle Farmer are all on the 10-day IL, leaving Minnesota quite thin on depth options.

and what scared the other two teams away in free agency is starting to manifest itself

Seems to be an issue that once u suffer from it? it’s going to come back again and again. Nature of the sport keeps on ur feet. Running, quick movement etc. Every other soldier/swabbie etc remembers some of their mates who would get shin splints. kind of same thing in boot camp. Same guys always came down again and again with them. Not much can do about it, but keep off feet few days and from past guys with this plantir fasciitis? About all really to do there, ex shady witch dr, no real good junk saw at 1 place could do.
TheGr8One
Except for the fact it’s his other foot you make some solid points. But because it’s his other foot your point doesn’t have much of a point.

@thegr8one
Until you’ve had it, you genuinely don’t know what it’s like. (Which obviously that’s true to any injury) Honestly you have to run on the balls of your toes otherwise it feels like you’re having knives stabbed in the base of your heels. It ruined two years of my mediocre amateur cricket and football (soccer) seasons…
The only thing I’ve got in common with Joe Di Maggio….
TheGr8One
You’re assuming I haven’t had it which is silly to me because you don’t know me. High school and DII college basketball player here I’m very familiar with the injury. Got it in my left foot and I’m 100% standing by my point that it had nothing to do with when I got it in my other foot 3 years later. Same with Correa we’re talking different feet here lol
robw5555
He is overrated and way overpaid.
wjf010
swing and a miss….plantar fasciitis was not the concern….it was a surgically repaired right ankle. troll
SODOMOJO
You, you do realize that plantar fasciitis occurs in the heel. You know, the heel that’s connected to the ankle?
GarryHarris
I had it my arch years ago. Damn hurt.
ohyeadam
Damn, if these guys could stay healthy it’s the deepest lineup in baseball
Troutahni
I will say thi: if Miranda, Royce, Correa, Larnach, Castro, Brooks, Buxton and Kepler are all healthy at the start of the playoffs, they will be my pick to win the World Series, especially if Wallner continues his hot hitting. With Carlos Santana in the lineup against Lefties the Twins have the most balanced lineup in baseball. Playing the match-ups, they will have the best combinationof boppers and speed on the bench. They definitely have the most depth. If they have a true ace, they would be unstoppable. They are the best fit for Crochet.

He’s a troll why? The man had two major contracts issued and pulled back because of issues with feet and ankles. Last I checked plantar fasciitis was in that area and not in the back. Boom roasted
gbs42
It was ankle issues, not feet. Boom.
Tigers3232
He broke his fibula not his ankle. And the surgery for the fibula was what teams were concerned with. Unlike ankles, fibula are not known to be a cause of plantar fascitis.
Boom….
Roll
“The Mets were reportedly also concerned with Correa’s right ANKLE, which was surgically repaired while he played in the Minor Leagues in 2014. Although it caused pain for him during a slide into second base last September, the ankle injury hasn’t directly caused him to miss any time over the past eight seasons.”

He missed a few games after fouling a ball off of his foot. He did not tear or break anything. That’s a bit of a reach there….

not a stretch if its the truth.
Look up the article if you dont believe me I gave you the site and the date of the article on MLB’s website which was when the article was written on the day he signed with the twins. I believe it also mentioned it was the same reason the Giants backed out too. My guess is this is also why the twins setup the contract the way they did.
Ankle issues is a leading cause to lisfranc plus other foot injuries later as people over compensate for it
Tigers3232
He bruised his ankle fouling a ball off. He did not break anything or damage any sort tissue.
The main concern was the broken fibula He had.
Roll
@tigers
do you have proof of this? I have provided backup from a credible source (MLB itself). Pookie on the corner doesnt count.
Also how about the new york daily news 12/29/22
““The biggest question is what exactly the Mets and Giants found in the physical that was so alarming. Dr. Laith Jazrawi, a sports orthopedic surgeon at NYU Langone who has not treated Correa, said the two teams likely saw post-traumatic arthritis in the ankle. This could possibly lead to problems with the ankle within the next decade, which is well within the range of the 12-year contract the Mets offered Correa and the 13-year deal the Giants offered him before it fell apart and he agreed to terms with the team in Queens.
Post-traumatic arthritis — meaning even if you stabilize it [fibula] and make it perfect, there’s still an injury that’s impacted on the ankle,” Dr. Jazrawi told the Daily News in a phone interview on Thursday. “And there may be finding suggestive of some other issues there that may necessitate surgery later on, that doesn’t necessarily have a great outcome.”
Last i checked there was no cartilage on the fibula but you know where there is cartilage the ankle.
Boom *drops the mic*

@Roll Before u mic drop, maybe sight a doctor who actually saw Correa and not one who is speculating.
Tigers3232
@Roll the issue here is any doctors talking to the media about Correa’s health are speculating and have not saw him as a patient or his records. Amy who have can not speak of those things due to HIPPA.
He has only missed time once due to ankle and it was fouling a ball off that led to no damage. The red flag in his medical is allegedly the broken fibula while sliding in 2014 in Minors. Some reports on the incident mention a ligament as well. The details on it don’t seem very clear.
As for the NYU doctor you quoted from article. I’m not sure why he is speculating on his ankle for a broke leg. Even if the ligament connected to ankle not sure why he’s hypothesizing on cartilage damage in the ankle for a broken fibula.
Roll
Again where is your proof? that link does not have anything to do with what teams were concerned about and is incomplete. You was saying it is due to a broken fibula which is not on that link. Your link does not even include a dr and the “speculative” is actually known history from even before he was a free agent heck before he was a major leaguer. It came from the Astros GM Luhnow when it happened to him in the minors.
Also it is not alleged about the broken fibula as Correa himself confirmed the plate when he came up hurting from a slide complaining about the plate hitting his ankle before that offseason. There is a link to the major injury/surgery that he lost the rest of the season in the minors which is referenced below and has links for the other stuff mentioned as well.
As examples how ligaments can scare off people, how about Kumar Rocker whom the mets drafted with their first round pick in 2021 they had questions about his ligaments (UCL) and decided not to draft him and the rangers drafted him next year and a year after that he had tj.
When you are paying out that big a dollar that is a big issue. Some teams do more vigorous checks especially for long term issues.. Look at the rangers and degrom, he has been paid almost 60M for 30 inning so far. Maybe the rangers dont think TJ is an issue as both happened to be ranger examples.

speaker drop?
Tigers3232
@Roll Wher in any link you posted is there clear indication of what Giants or Mets were concerned with?? You are posting articles where people are speculating. Again the 2014 injury which is mentioned in your last link was a broken fibula. That is the leg not the ankle. Do you understand the difference between the two??
LMAO you really tried comparing a UCL injury with a pitcher to a ligament issue(that is unclear as its never been made public) in a leg…. BTW a UCL with pitchers(TJS) involves vomplete replacement.
I don’t know what’s more laughable your comparison there or your trying to claim a doctor admittedly speculating as a smoking gun. Get a clue dude….
Roll
first you start with broken fibula then only ankle off a foul ball then say alleged broken fibula now your saying leg. well which one is it?
“Carlos Correa grabs his ankle after a slide against the Royals on Sept. 20, 2022. ““He just hit my plate,” Correa said after the game, per The Athletic. “I had surgery, and he hit it. Just kind of felt numb. Vibrating. So I was just waiting for it to calm down. It was a little scary, but when I moved I knew it was good.””
doesnt sound alleged to me and what was he grabbing .. oh thats right his ankle and when was this ohhh thats last couple weeks before the season ended before he was trying to sign a mega contract. Imagine if tapping a glove caused that much pain and numbness, my first check would be that especially a player for 10+ years at over 300M. I would consider that a major concern.
also from my other post as we have now confirmed the broken fibula and surgery, “Post-traumatic arthritis — meaning even if you stabilize it [fibula] and make it perfect, there’s still an injury that’s impacted on the ankle,” Dr. Jazrawi”
“He would go on to miss the remainder of that season in 2014, but he wore an ankle guard for a while after as the Astros shortstop.”
hmm why would you wear an ankle guard and not a leg guard if its just a broken bone. Sounds like he needed extra support for his ankle almost like he might be suffering from post traumatic arthritis after they stabilized his fibula. Interesting. .
There are very few baseball injuries where a slide has caused a broken fibula and ankle injury. As I said ligaments are fickle things ligaments in the elbow is most common one and not all ucl require “Vomplete” replacement there is also brace procedure which this year many are doing.
You cant even keep a story straight and have shown absolutely no proof to contradict it. You about as good at your counterpoints as Javier Baez is at hitting since he joined the tigers.

This guy can’t catch a break. I’d still trade places with him so it limits my sympathy a bit.

“Catch a break”…My girlfriend, who works as a orthopedic rehabilitation specialist, told me last year that Correa played and ran so stiff(not fluid at all), she felt he’d always suffer and be susceptible to lower half injuries.

Huge respect for Carlos. He never wanted this to be an issue. When healthy, he gives 200%. Wishing him well. Glad he’s with Minnesota.

Yes, Josh MUCH MORE deserving of the spot. All Star Rosters now just popularity contests, and less about those most deserving. Lesser known more deserving guys get snubbed every year.
It is all popularity, MLB name branding and Not who most deserves an all-star nomination.
