As the 2024 regular season continues, here are three things we’ll be keeping an eye on around the baseball world throughout the day today:
1. Rizzo to undergo imaging:
Yankees first baseman Anthony Rizzo suffered a right arm injury following a collision with Red Sox lefty Brennan Bernardino at the plate in the seventh inning of last night’s loss to Boston. As noted by ESPN’s Jorge Castillo, Rizzo appeared to be favoring his wrist area in the aftermath of the collision, although MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch relayed that the Yankees termed the issue a “lower right forearm injury.” Rizzo is set to head back to New York today to visit team doctors and undergo imaging to determine the severity of the issue.
The injury is the latest tough blow in what has been a difficult season for Rizzo; the 34-year-old has slashed just .223/.289/.341 with a wRC+ of 84 in 291 trips to the plate this year. That production makes Rizzo one of just eight qualified first basemen to post below average offensive numbers this year, and of that group he’s outproduced only Joey Meneses, Spencer Torkelson, and Elehuris Montero. If Rizzo requires a trip to the injured list, Oswaldo Cabrera and DJ LeMahieu figure to handle the infield corners in his absence.
2. Carroll to remain in Arizona for MRI:
Diamondbacks outfielder Corbin Carroll was also removed in the late innings yesterday, with manager Torey Lovullo telling reporters (including Alex Weiner of AZSports) that the 23-year-old was suffering from “left side discomfort.” Carroll will remain in Arizona to undergo an MRI while the rest of the team heads to Washington today ahead of their series against the Nationals. While that might seem somewhat ominous, Carroll remained optimistic and told Weiner that “all indications” suggest the results of today’s MRI will be positive.
Carroll has had a brutal sophomore slump, slashing just .213/.302/.310 (78 wRC+) in 70 games this year. He’s started to catch fire of late, however, with a .333/.435/.487 slash line in his last ten games — making the timing of this injury all the worse. In the event that Carroll is sidelined, Jake McCarthy is the likeliest candidate to take over center field for Arizona, opening up the corners for veterans Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Randal Grichuk.
3. Blue Jays to activate Rodriguez:
Toronto is set to get some reinforcements on the pitching side today, as Francys Romero reports that right-hander Yariel Rodriguez is set to be activated from the 15-day injured list today. Rodriguez, 27, was among the most intriguing free agent signings of the offseason as a young hurler who had impressed in Japan but had not yet appeared in a big league game. The Blue Jays took a chance on Rodriguez with a five-year, $32MM deal, but Rodriguez’s debut campaign has been marred by injury. The righty pitched decently in four starts with the club earlier this year (4.11 ERA, 22.2% strikeout rate) but has missed the past six weeks due to thoracic spine inflammation.
Now that he’s healthy, Rodriguez will likely have the opportunity to step into the club’s fifth starter role in the aftermath of righty Alek Manoah’s impending UCL surgery. Rodriguez dominated in eight appearances at the Triple-A level this year, pitching to a 1.33 ERA in 20 1/3 innings while striking out an excellent 37.9% of batters faced. In order to activate him, the Blue Jays will have to create room on the active roster prior to tonight’s game against the Red Sox, which is set to begin at 6:07pm local time.

At the plate?
eddiemathews
missed it by 90’…or 270′
all in the suit that you wear
The collision was at first base. Bernardino was covering first base on a grounder to the right side.

hayzee – Nick is brand new, give him some time.
User 3014224641
Can we DFA Nick?
Fever Pitch Guy
Long – Maybe option him to the Pro Hockey Rumors site?
CTS4
DFA shapiro and atkins to make room for Yariel Rodiguez…..
nitemare
Rizzo removed from game was only positive in Yankees loss
Old York
@nitemare
Great pitching always beats great hitting. Boston has a top 3 pitching staff in the MLB.
Sabermetric Acolyte
This seemed more to be small ball versus long ball. When Stroman was pitched he looked rattled every time the Red Sox stole a base. Not to mention 3-4 runs could be credited to the Red Sox running game last night.
Liberalsteve
What a dumb cliche. THere is 0 proof that “great pitching always beats great hitting”
Atloriolesfan
Well, Zach Wheeler did hold the Os to 4 homers in 4+ innings.
LLGiants64
Unless you were facing Nolan Ryan….
Old York
Well, there’s this from Fangraphs…
From 1903 through this year’s Divisional Series, there have been 1,214 playoff games and therefore 2,428 team scores (since every game has two teams). Of these, good hitting has been beaten 315 times and has done the beating 259 times. The former figure is almost 13 percent of all outcomes, while the latter is 10.7 percent. So, on average, for every 10 games that good hitting is shut down, there are 8 where good hitting slaughters. The advantage goes to pitching overall, but the advantage is not so great that a short series will hold true to that advantage.
If we limit our outcomes to starts from good pitchers, things get better. Good hitting has been shut down by good pitching 209 times and by other pitching 106 times. On the other side, good hitting has massacred good pitching 151 times and other pitching 108 times. Instead of the 10-to-8 ratio of shutdowns to slaughters, good pitchers bump that up to 11-to-8, whereas it’s a grab bag with the back end of a rotation, with as many gems as duds.

So, not exactly ‘always’ but 60% is decent.
Old York
@Atloriolesfan
Pitchers will struggle game to game but I’m talking long-term, big picture.
Canuckleball
@ Old York
Boston isn’t top 3 in pitching in MLB
5th in whole staff pitcher WAR
5th in ERA+
6th in regular old ERA
Their 3rd in the AL, but 5th in the majors, at best
Still very good.
Fever Pitch Guy
Canuck – Thank you for setting the record straight.
I would also add, if “great pitching always beats great hitting” then why are the Red Sox only 2 games over .500?
The Red Sox “great pitching” just barely squeezed out a split against the worst offense in MLB just 8 days ago.
Old York
@Canuckleball
I’m looking at Fangraphs right now.
3rd in pitching WAR, including their bullpen because it’s necessary to include, especially in today’s game where starters only go 4 or 5 innings.
They’re 3rd in FIP with 3.58. I use FIP because ERA is a team stat not evaluating the actual pitchers.
By SIERA, their ranked 2nd with 3.54.
Case closed…
Fever Pitch Guy
Old – Let’s for a minute veer away from the flawed stats and look at this logically …. ya know, critical thinking and all ….
The greatest pitcher in the game, assuming he pitches a complete game (although other examples can be used), needs to be perfect for approximately 85+ pitches in order to be assured of a victory (assuming his team scores at least one run).
This is why good hitters can beat great pitchers, because if the pitcher(s) makes JUST ONE MISTAKE out of 85+ pitches it could easily cost them the game.
And I will again use one of my favorite examples:
2013 ALCS Game#3
Verlander pitched 8 innings
Gave up just 4 hits and a walk
Struck out 10
But he LOST because Mike Napoli jumped on Verlander’s one mistake and knocked it out of the park.
Old York
@Fever Pitch Guy
Again, the win itself is a team stat that means nothing for pitchers. We’ve seen how ridiculous it is as you point out. A guy. For example, Pedro Martinez went into extra innings with a perfect game and lost it in extras on a double. Does that mean that mean that he wasn’t a good pitcher that game? That he somehow wasn’t good enough or the batters were better? He did get the Win but it was because his team scored in the top half of extras. Ultimately, it’s a team stat that has some luck involved there. That’s why, when I’m evaluating pitchers, I look at other things like FIP, SIERA and FRA to understand what’s going on under the hood.
What’s you’re suggesting is that I should evaluate the used car I’m looking for based on the brand name. All I’m saying is that if you have a good pitching staff and bullpen, it’s going to dampen the long-term affects on batters. Will one mega star pitcher get blown up throughout his career on a few days? Sure, they all do.
Sept 13 2002 – 2 Innings, 7H, 7R, 7ER, 1BB, 3K, 1HR – ERA 31.50, FIP 7.96, xFIP 3.55
Does that mean generally speaking, great pitchers will never defeat any offense?
Fever Pitch Guy
Old – I was responding to your contention that great pitching always beats great hitting, nothing more.
It’s much more challenging for great pitchers to succeed against great hitters, than vice-versa.
Old York
@Fever Pitch Guy
Sure, it’s an old saying. Same goes with defense wins championships but the Blue Jays are the #1 defensive team in MLB and they are going nowhere fast.
Fever Pitch Guy
Old – Since you agree, why didn’t you say so earlier? LOL!
Old York
@Fever Pitch Guy
Because 60% of the time the pitcher wins and that’s a win for me. Sure, it’s not ‘always’, though.
Fever Pitch Guy
Old – Keep looking then, I’m sure there are other flawed stats out there that could lead you to believe pitchers win 70% or more! Maybe FRO or FLO?
Old York
@Fever Pitch Guy
Pitchers always win. Check the stats. I don’t see any position players with Ws. Only pitchers. So, they will always win in the end…
Frankie Bani
Excelent !!
Old York
Instead of pizza box sized bases, maybe they need the Softball base at 1st?
Spaced-Cowboy
Just make it a finish line.
Old York
@Spaced-Cowboy
It is a finish line right now. The base if the finish line. I’m just saying, move to the Softball base for 1st base and then we don’t need to worry about such situations from happening. Then a rule can be that if the pitcher touches the runner side of the base, the runner is safe. This will keep players safe and less chance of injuries.
Os1995
I believe the SEC was testing that out in college baseball. Would also help with the runners interference calls on bunts.
Lefty_Orioles_Fan
Maybe, the Yankees can sign Jose Abreu for a lottery ticket deal, if Rizzo is going to miss time
Fever Pitch Guy
Lefty – It would be HUGELY ironic if the Red Sox release Dom Smith and the Yankees sign him to play first base in Rizzo’s absence.
Because it was Dom’s horrific throw that caused the collision.
jerseyjohn
Hard pass Lefty. Ben Rice can be given a shot of they want to be bold. The boring play is DJ to 1st and Cabrera starting at 3rd. The best path to upgrading the team is getting a decent third baseman. Rizzo and DJ can split first when healthy.
Lefty_Orioles_Fan
Well I don’t think it’s a horrible idea
Abreu did have a good playoff last 2023, that wasn’t that long ago, but if the Yankees go in house so be it
Anthony maresca
Im hoping DJ blows out his toe again and send his sorry ass packing cause only way Boone /Cashman will go to the youngsters is via an injury. Ben Rice at a minimum deserves a cameo
TAKERDBACKS
Dbacks can’t catch a break with injuries.
Liberalsteve
Maybe they need to buy more players
its_happening
Most likely Yimi Garcia is going on the IL. He motioned to the dugout that something was wrong. TV broadcast team didn’t see it at the time. Not good.
YankeesBleacherCreature
Ben Rice?
CravenMoorehead
That Gleyber Torres at bat with the bases loaded almost drove me to drink last night
Liberalsteve
Torkelson for a mid prospect
jaysfansince1977
Sorry Nick but Yariel has 4 starts with the Jays this season, with 15.1 innings pitched
Fever Pitch Guy
jays – Nick is brand new, give him some time.
jaysfansince1977
Hey Fever, I tried to delete my comment as after re-reading his write up i must say he was right as i did not read it properly he was saying when the Jays signed him he had never pitched in the MLB
Fever Pitch Guy
jays – No worries, I think this is the part that was misleading: “who had impressed in Japan but had not yet appeared in a big league game”
Either he should have ended the sentence after Japan, or added “prior to signing” at the end of the sentence.
Angels & NL West
As noted in the article, Carroll’s bat has finally started to heat up so this would be a big setback for him and the team if he is out even for just 10 days. Alex Thomas is due back soon so that would soften the blow, but a hot Corbin Carroll is tough to replace. What the Dbacks really need is to get back Gallen, Kelly and Rodriguez.
LordD99
Opportunity perhaps for the Yankees to look at Ben Rice.
Acoss1331
Boston ran all night on the Yankees last night. Red Sox simply played the small ball, and it was such a fun game to watch. This Red Sox team reminds me a lot of last year’s Arizona Diamondbacks.
Frankie Bani
Rizzo will be to extender to 60 day IL
Acoss1331
Pretty much a nice way of benching him. Rizzo has been very mediocre so far this season…
tuck 2
Os fans are bummed that Rizzo will be out of the lineup this week.
YanksPhan42
Call up Ben Rice and watch him Tom Brady Rizzo.
Salzilla
Time for Rice to Riches.
alumofuf
Rice to first and replace Torres. No offense and no defense so better to play a rookie.
Trade no prospects and fill within. Just need prospects at 1st, 2nd and 3rd. A 1/3 of the batting order are automatic outs.
