TODAY: Williamson will forego surgery for now, Bell told Mark Sheldon (X link) and other reporters, and has instead received injections in his ailing shoulder. The southpaw will be shut down for at least three weeks to see how his shoulder responds to the treatment, and will then resume throwing if improvement is shown.
JUNE 11: Two players on the Reds may need to go under the knife, according to David Bell, as relayed by Mark Sheldon of MLB.com (X link) and Gordon Wittenmyer of the Cincinnati Enquirer (X link). Infielder Christian Encarnacion-Strand has ligament damage in his fractured hand while left-hander Brandon Williamson has a lesion in his shoulder. Both players will be evaluated in the coming days with season-ending surgery possible for each of them.
Encarnacion-Strand debuted with a splash last year, hitting 13 home runs in his first 63 major league games. He slashed .270/.328/.477 for a wRC+ of 112 while playing first and third base, as well as a brief stint in right field.
That showing got him the everyday first base gig coming into 2024, though the season hasn’t played out the way he or the club hoped. He produced a tepid line of .190/.220/.293 this year before landing on the injured list in early May. He had been hit on the hand by a pitch at the end of April. X-rays after that HBP were negative but revealed an “old fracture” in one of his bones, per Wittenmyer. He continued playing for a little bit longer before eventually being placed on the IL.
He’s been on the IL for over a month now and it seems some further testing discovered some ligament damage. “Surgery is an option,” Bell said today, per Charlie Goldsmith of the Cincinnati Enquirer on X. “We’re hopeful he can start progressing. If that’s what he and the specialist decide.”
As for Williamson, he’s been on the injured list all year due to a shoulder strain that was diagnosed in spring training. He had been on a rehab assignment of late but that was shut down last week due to continued discomfort.
Once a top 100 prospect, Williamson went from the Mariners to the Reds as part of the March 2022 trade that sent Eugenio Suárez and Jesse Winker to Seattle. Williamson made his major league debut last year with a 4.46 earned run average that obviously isn’t too exciting, but it’s perhaps notable that his results improved as he got acclimated to the majors. He had a5.82 ERA in his first eight outings but then a 3.79 ERA in his final 15.
The Reds’ season has been significantly affected by absences of potential contributors so far this year. Noelvi Marté received an 80-game PED suspension and has been away from the team all year, while players like Encarnacion-Strand, Williamson, Matt McLain, Nick Lodolo, TJ Friedl and others have missed time due to injuries.
Lodolo and Friedl have since returned to the club and McLain could perhaps rejoin the club in August. If either Encarnacion-Strand or Williamson or both end up requiring surgery, it will deprive the club of another such return later in the year.
The club slumped badly in May but have been quite hot of late, with seven wins in their past eight games. Their 32-34 record isn’t especially impressive but it puts them just half a game back of a playoff spot in the relatively weak National League playoff race. Assuming they hang around the postseason picture in the coming weeks, they may be able to address these issues, if the surgeries are eventually deemed necessary.
For now, Lodolo, Hunter Greene, Andrew Abbott and Frankie Montas are in four rotation spots with one opening due to the recent optioning of Graham Ashcraft. Internal options to fill the spot include Nick Martinez and Carson Spiers. Williamson would be in that mix if healthy but he would naturally be subtracted if he ends up undergoing the surgery.
On the infield, Spencer Steer has been the regular first baseman lately, with Jonathan India at second, Jeimer Candelario at third and Elly De La Cruz at shortstop, while the designated hitter spot has largely been used to rotate the club’s many outfielders into the lineup. If Encarnacion-Strand were healthy, Steer could have been moved to third or DH or a corner outfield spot, though that possibility is clearly not an option at the moment and may not come into the play at all for the remainder of 2024.

The pitch clock did this!

No. It was Fanatics uniform. 🙂
This one belongs to the Reds
Neither one easy to come back from. Good thoughts and speedy recovery to both.
This is why you build a complete roster if you expect to contend.
SkenesandSlopes
An absolute wreck of a season for Cincy and yet they are not out of it by any means. Feels like they are.
cwizzy6
7 games back in the division, but the wild card is more realistic being just a half game out of a spot.
Line2line 2
Since you seem to always have the answers on what every teams need to do in the season.
Why are you constantly on here crying and hating on your supposed “favorite” team, and nowhere near an mlb organization? I mean, I know the answer, I just wanna see if you can explain your dumb ah self?
Coys Bacon
You know who should have known better this year and signed someone knowing their best player would be hurt. The Braves. Adam Duvall and his barely 600 OPS gets signed and Acuña goes down? Should have built an even better roster.
Franklin Nitty
I hear crying, but it aint coming from him.
its_happening
Line2 the Reds have given fans every reason to be critical of them. You should explain why the Reds are above criticism, and refute what Belongs says.
earmbrister
Wrong. You’re posting on an article that details how the Reds have lost half of their starting lineup and half of their rotation to injuries for a big chunk of the season and you say the Reds have given every reason to be critical of them. Yeah, you should be the one who should explain that twisted logic.
Krall did a complete rebuild of the team two short years ago in the mist of a 100 loss season. They were in contention the very next year before a string of injuries hit. And they’re in contention again this year despite all the injuries.
They have one of the most exciting young teams in the league. If they’re able to land one or two more additions (a big RH OF bat and another quality reliever) they can go deep into the postseason.
its_happening
Wrong?
Read the entire thread before you come in. Moreover, the Reds haven’t won a playoff series in nearly 30 years. 29 to be exact. What, still can’t criticize? Reds play in a bad division, and that’s helped keep them in. Mediocre team in a bad division, and you do not know what it takes to win with the clear holes your Reds still have.
But hey, you think their track record absolves them from ridicule. Your logic is the one in-question here.
earmbrister
Yeah, you’re wrong.
You’re wrong about me not reading the entire thread, but that’s minor.
You’re wrong that my logic is that their track record absolves them from ridicule. My logic is who cares about the past, the question is what have you done for me lately?
I don’t care about 30 years ago, when Nick Krall was in HS and wondering who he should take to the junior prom. What does criticizing the past do to change the past? Oh yeah, nothing.
I’ve been a fan for more than 50 years, so I’ve seen the good times and the bad. I don’t give much thought to the bad years, my focus is whether the team is making good choices in the present and for the future.
The Reds have three top quality starting pitchers, which is what you need for the postseason. They have further depth beyond that.
The Reds have a loaded infield, despite losing CES, McLain, and Marte for most of the season to date.
The outfield has some talent in Steer, Fraley, and Friedl. They could use a big RH bat in RF.
The bullpen has the fewest blown saves in the league.
The team has a quality roster and it’s young and improving.
And you’re wrong about the criticism that their play in a bad division has kept them in contention. At this point of the season, they haven’t even played all their division foes (no games versus Pittsburgh for instance). They’ve only played three teams a total of seven times, with a record of 5-2 vs the Cubs, 4-3 vs the Dodgers, and 4-3 vs the Phillies. Are those the bad teams you’re talking about?

The NL central sucks. Get over it.
earmbrister
Great comeback. You’re wrong – it happens. For you apparently it happens over and over again.
earmbrister
I’ve rooted for the Reds for 55 years. I could give two shitz who the current owner is.
Sorry, I didn’t mean to interrupt your incessant whining
its_happening
The NLCS predominately features teams from the NL East and NL West. That is a fact. The central teams do not fare well in October. Another fact.
For a guy claiming to watch baseball for 55 years this is not the 1970s. Your Reds are poorly run and the NL Central is weak. Those are facts. If that bothers you, tough luck. When you’re ready for a real baseball discussion let me know because what you know is close to nothing.
Chris from NJ
The Reds have a lot to like. Young pitching in Lodolo and Abbott. They have got a interesting player in De La Cruz. Steer and McLain look like keepers as well. Injuries are hurting them this year. The question is will Cincy ever spend on that free agent that will put them over the top. Unfortunately I don’t see them ever opening up the pocket book. They are a fun team to watch.
octavian8
It’s perfectly legitimate to criticize your team if it’s fair or legitimate. Crying on every post because Krall fails to have a crystal ball is ridiculous. He also fails to mention specific moves he would have made or specific players he would have acquired. Only wild accusations about team building.
earmbrister
Yeah, I’ve been watching baseball for 55 years. Apparently you’ve only been watching it for 10 or so.
The best run franchise in the National League is the St. Louis Cardinals, and it ain’t even close. The Cardinals have won the World Series 11 times, including twice in the last 20 years. Fact. And they don’t have a $300 million budget like the Dodgers. How many World Series titles do those NL East teams have?
As for your NLCS and who it predominantly features, the Cardinals have been in the NLCS nine times in the last 24 years. Another fact.
If the season were to end today, there would be two NL Central teams, two NL East teams and two NL West teams in the playoffs. Another fact.
The last 2 teams in the NL Central are a half game and a game out of the playoffs. Another fact.
The NL Central doesn’t have any creampuff teams like the White Sox, the Angels, the Athletics, the Rockies, and the Marlins. Another fact.
You are consistently wrong -it happens.
SkenesandSlopes
NL Central is not a good division. That is not debatable.
its_happening
Only 1 NL Central team is above .500 right now. I’m right, you are wrong.
Not since 2019 has an NL Central team made it to the NLCS. I’m right, you are wrong.
The entire NL Central ARE cream puffs. You are in-denial. And wrong.
Giants, DBacks, Padres, Mets – all struggling teams playing over .500 vs Central teams. I’m right, you’re wrong.
2023 – NL Central teams were under .500 against the NL East (74-86) and NL West (77-83). 2022 vs NL East (71-94) and NL West (69-96). Wow, NL Central is a powerhouse!!!!!
There is a theme here. Mostly that you are off the mark but that there’s plenty of evidence supporting the fact that the NL Central is barely AAA.
earmbrister
Only one NL West team is above .500 right now. And the Rockies are at .348. THAT is a cream puff.
Meanwhile, over in the NL East, the Marlins are at .329 . THAT is a cream puff.
The Reds in 14 games this year against the Dodgers and the Phillies (you know, the best teams in the league) have a .571 winning percentage. Not bad for barely being a AAA team. Of course, the Reds are in third place in the division.
THOSE are the facts.
Please enlighten us. What team are you a fan of?
SkenesandSlopes
earm, it is mid-June. You got put in your place. Your Reds are below .500 against the east and west divisions. Same with the Cardinals and Brewers. Your division is still under .500 against the rest of the national league. Face it, the central is the worst division in the NL. That is an irrefutable fact.
earmbrister
Yes, it is mid June, you got the date, right. However, the Reds are not below 500 against the NL East – they’re 7-6. The Pirates have a winning record against the NL East as well, with a .500 record vs the West. The Cubs are 9-6 against the West.
Overall, the NL Central is 33-34 vs the East and 36-38 vs the West. Yeah, that’s some real dominance by the East & West. Or the Central is about even with BOTH of the other divisions.
Not bad for a division that is “barely AAA”.
its_happening
It’s horrible, actually. I literally showed you how pathetic your NL Cebtrak had been, “but the Reds are 7-6”. WOW!!!! Start the parade!
When you come to reality let us know. Until then it’s not too much to ask for the entire division to play over .500 against their division counterparts (which they do not and have not). Weak.
earmbrister
Yeah, you didn’t show me squat. The Reds are a half game out of the playoffs with 3.5 months to play. The NL Central is 33-34 vs the NL East and 36-38 vs the West. The three worst teams in the NL reside in the East and West.
For sure that is some DOMINANCE by the East and West. I guess that is what amounts to “intelligence” from a teenage probable Mets fan living in his mama’s basement in Queens. Time for you to go pop a few zits little man. Ciao.
Franklin Nitty
You sure worry alot about proving someone wrong. You also tend to look the other way when it comes to the last 30 years. The numbers do not lie though.
SkenesandSlopes
Numbers say Cincy Red Legs are….
4 games below .500
below .500 at home and on the road
can’t beat teams above .500
below .500 against the NL West
NL Central is below .500 against other, superior divisions
….and, looking at the Reds prospects and their numbers in 2024, they aren’t doing well. It appears you did not get the memo that everything you have said here is rather embarrassing, earnblister.
Bobcastelliniscat
Line2line. You obviously do not follow the Reds, their front office and their ownership group. You should think before you post. You’re embarrassing yourself.
Line2line 2
Lmaooo I don’t follow the reds? I’ve had season tickets since I was a literal baby 30+ years ago my guy.

Cincyfan85
I have doubts Matt McLain is going to make it back and provide much help either. All the rotation depth options are hurt or not performing well in the minors. I’d like to see them add a bat and a starter at the deadline.
This one belongs to the Reds
It even sounds like the team is pessimistic about that now as far as McLain.
The starter should have been added in the offseason. With Williamson and Ashcraft’s troubles, plus the kids in the minors far away from helping, the deadline may be too late for a starter.
Line2line 2
Gd you’re an idiot.
Coys Bacon
This poster stretches the levels of credibility every time on anything Reds related.
They signed a starter already. His name is Montas. What troubles did Williamson have before ST? None that we heard of. But yet the Reds should have had the foresight to sign another starter. What troubles was Ashcraft having before his last 4-5 starts? He wasn’t. He had come off a good finish last year. Yet the Reds already signing Martinez as well to be a swing man shouid have signed another starter to possibly take over a spot just in case. No one saw Connor Phillips turning into Steve Blass. Yet Spiers has looked very good. No credit for that of course.
Franklin Nitty
Calm down Mr Krall. You seem to have an affinity for .485 winning baseball teams. Montas has essentially had 2 good starts and been below average the rest. Is that your number 1? Is that your standard? He is performing to expectation for alot of us.
EVERYONE knew they needed another starter except you apparently. Everyone also knew when CES went down he would be out way longer, the same with the original “he will be back next week” injury to Mclain. Why? How did we know? It’s called track record. This organization is consistently the worst in MLB the last 20 years and its no accident. Numbers and results do not lie. Bad manager hires (and extensions). Bad free agency signings. Terrible drafting. Bad contracts to players over 30. Terrible medical staff. Terrible developing pitching. Goes on and on and you can huff and puff but cant say I’m wrong.
Coys Bacon
F off with that Mr Krall stuff. You want to go back and talk about 20 years? Let’s just talk about what’s going on now which is what counts.
They already had 5 starters. I did not expect Montas to be a Number 1 starter. Nowhere did I say that. Where was the other starter supposed to pitch if they already had 5 starters?? You mean like Martinez who was signed to start games in case one of the 5 went down. Just like they did sign him. Which starter out if this group would you have put in the bullpen or sent down to sign another starter? They had Connor Phillips and Williamson who pitched last year in the majors.
You want to use well the track record of 20 years garbage so they should have known these guys would get hurt or Phillips regressing this badly? That’s not how you approach the season thinking well we’ve been bad most of the last 20 years so even though we have 5 starers. Let’s sign another one and send down Abbott. Lodolo. Ashcraft before his struggles.
You’re type along with that other idiot can make some valid points here and there while using the same Well the Reds have sucked for the last 20 years so everything they do sucks now and it won’t matter. I mean what go talk about another team if that’s all you have.
Krall should have signed Tommy Pham instead of keeping Martini. That I can criticize him for or not getting another RH hitter.
cguy
Reply to tobttr. Reds have used a total of 7 SP to date: Greene, Lodolo, Montas, Abbott, Ashcraft, Martinez, and Suter (actualyy an opener for 3 BP games). That’s a good thing. No Weavers, no Cessas. Spiers will be #8 and is much more ML ready than last year when he started. I’d say Aguiar is at least as ready now to start ML games as Spiers, Richardson, and Phillips were when they were used as SP last season. Reds will probably need to acquire another veteran sp for the 2nd half (if still in playoff contention) because of the inings limits on Lodolo, Abbott, and Montas. But too many veteran arms limit the opportunities for the young talented pitching the Reds are developing.
Franklin Nitty
Idiots call others idiots. You struggle w discussing baseball without getting angry and calling people names. Either you are a 12 year old, or have other heavier issues youre dealing with. Arguing for a baseball team that hasnt won as much as a single playoff series in 30 years seems silly to me but you can do what makes you happy. Bottom line is the Reds have a manager who is 30 or 40 games under .500 and is on his third contract in 5.5 years. All you need to know about the Reds commitment to excellence.
Coys Bacon
My apologies Mister Tibbs. A manager who like any other managers in the majors now is being more controlled by the analytics departments. If you want to fire him go ahead. Never discussed Bell so now that you’ve moved to that and assumed I was defending him to not be replaced. Ok. We can move to that. The next manager will also be hired to do what Bell does. Communication with the players and deflection of their mistakes.
Go read the Joe Madden book which he discusses how his ability to manage was removed from him by Analysis department and he’s barely managing at all.
Line2line 2
Does it suck having to hop on multiple accounts to make it look like people actually agree with your stupidity? Lmaooooo
Bobcastelliniscat
Everyone knows McLain won’t be back until next season. I don’t know why the Reds would perpetuate that myth. He probably won’t be productive until late 2025 or maybe 2026.
Franklin Nitty
The Reds have very few prospects that would have any value unless they are hiding them somewhere.
Coys Bacon
Because you’re not a Reds fan who actually follows the team?
Julian Aguiar. Rhett Lowder. Sal Stewart. Hector Rodríguez. Ranked 10th by Jonathan Mayo and Jim Callis.

At least Marte is coming back due to no injury. Who knows how he will look. Wasted year for Matt and CES. At least Candelario is not Moose 2.0 because Hey it was only April and that’s his worst month but no Mr This One Belong to the Reds and the others nowhere to be found moving forward on this matter.
Franklin Nitty
Candelario is hitting .234 with a WAR of 0.3. Is that the hill youre setting up shop on? Just stop defending the bull s*** the front office feeds you and maybe it will change.
Coys Bacon
Are we barely in June? He was supposed to be depth anyways. Like India was. He wasn’t going to start. Marte was. Matt was.

Franklin Nitty
Hey Krall, go make a trade and log off. Trade yourself actually. For another shortstop who may or may not be hurt already but your team doctor missed it on his x ray.
Franklin Nitty
The best part is the Reds NEVER seen it at all lmao! His own specialist found it after running his own tests. Its never stops being funny and little twerps telling people to root for someone else is even funnier. Strap in young man, the Reds are going to dog walk you the next 30 years of your life.
Coys Bacon
I think it’s fair to wonder what happened earlier with CES, but this doesn’t seem like a case of anyone missing anything. It’s a bit murky, but according to Goldsmith, it seems the ligament issue was spotted by the first doctor, but he gave CES clearance to play with it. Now CES is getting a second opinion on whether or not he play with the ligament issue. If the second doctor clears him, he’s good to go back to progressing.
Of course if your a Grade A level Qnumbskull who looks for stuff at every turn.
Franklin Nitty
The Reds admitted it themselves that he was playing w a fracture they missed seeing on an x ray lol
Franklin Nitty
I cant argue w someone who is wrong about everything and name calls when shown youre wrong. Sorry, I have better things to do.

I’m a reds fan, and they are a disastrous organization! they miss or improperly report injuries ALL the time ! You only have to go back to McLain to find the last one.

NYMETSHEA
So. As a Mets fan expecting Alonso to be traded and Reds having a reputation as a club with prospect talent, how would they line up for a trade?
Cincyfan85
Doubtful. I think the Reds will be looking more into players they can control beyond this season also. That’s what they did when they traded for Trevor Bauer (and even Sam Moll last season).
NYMETSHEA
If the Reds believe in their positional players for first base (like CES) but just need a stop gap…Alonso should hold appeal. Will cost less with just control for 2024 than long term answer as well
Bobcastelliniscat
The Reds wouldn’t take on the Alonso’s salary. Even for four months. The Reds are a very cheap team. The Reds also over value their prospects.
dhud
Reds GM is on record saying the organizational goal is to build for continued success through the draft and farm system. Cashing some chips in for a splashy rental to make a wild card run would be very out of character IMO
Bobcastelliniscat
Yes dhud you are correct. I made a similar comment below. It’s just not how the Reds handles business. I can’t remember the last time the Reds outbid another team for a player through free agency or trade. If a player is in demand, he won’t end up in Cincinnati.
positively_broad_st
The Reds did not trade up last season when they had a chance for the playoffs. With the problems they’re having this season, they for certain won’t take on any rentals at the cost of prospect capital this season…
This one belongs to the Reds
They will have Candelario play a bad first base and live with it most likely, especially once Marte returns sometime in July.
dhud
He will DH vs RHP at least when they can play a LH OF and push steer to 1B
Josh 27
The history of Reds’ staff misdiagnosis of player injuries is terrible the last few years.
Coys Bacon
They draft 2nd this year. They will have their pick of a very good hitter. Don’t care if he only plays 1B either. He might be ready before CES ever is.
Armaments216
Sounds like Arizona would be more than happy to send old friend Eugenio Suarez back to GABP to fill in for CES.
dhud
Suarez is having just an abysmal year at the plate
I don’t think that’s the trade the “reds need to make a trade!” crowd will even be happy with
Acoss1331
Suarez is a DFA candidate not a trade candidate…
FromTheCheapSeats
100%.
Nobody’s trading for him. If memory serves, Arizona is on the hook for $12M this year and $15M in 2025. They’re going to have to eat that contract.
Armaments216
The $15M for 2025 is a club option; not sure if there’s a buyout. Definitely still a DFA candidate at this point.
Acoss1331
If the Reds need pitching or an outfielder, the White Sox are open for business!
Bobcastelliniscat
The last time the Reds made a significant mid season trade they acquired Tom Seaver. The Reds never acquire a player other teams actually want.
cguy
Reds have dealt midseason with Oakland before, including the Moll trade last year. B. Rooker would be a great addition to the Reds. Throw in Alex Wood (currently on the 60-dayIL) but might be ready in a few weeks and Oakland would like to dump is salary. That would cost the Reds a couple prospects- maybe Collier or Cabrera and say Richardson and Maxwell.
Tiger22matt
Absolutely not giving up top 100 prospects for Rooker.
tonyinsingapore
Brilliant- yes. Crochet would be a magnificent fit; innings limit and all… Pitch him once every 10-14 days, such that he can contribute during the playoffs…
octavian8
Tough for us fans to receive so many gut punches this year. At least Marte should help with the infield allowing Candy to hold down 1st and Steer back in left. Steer in left, Friedl in cf and Fraley/Fairchild platoon in right. Amazing this team is still contenders. Good thing we didn’t trade India and signed Candy or the only contending we’d be doing for the #1 draft pick.
Franklin Nitty
Just a terribly ran organization. Top to bottom.
Big whiffa
Actually their talent evaluation and drafting is toward the top of the league. Thats how they win so many games and system is super deep. Outside of that – sheer madness lol
Alan Horn
I totally agree. It is the development and injury prevention/handling that appears to be lacking. Something is wrong when you have so many injuries. The evaluation/drafting is indeed top notch. It is what happens afterward that is subpar. They have missed on a very few top draft choices in the past, but everyone does. It is how many you miss on.that matters.
Franklin Nitty
Wheres the success stories from players drafted by the Reds?
Alan Horn
Stephenson, De La Cruz, Marte, McLain,Greene, Lodolo, Ashcraft,, Steer, India, Abbot and Diaz. Granted, they traded for Marte and Steer, but they still developed them in the minors.
Bobcastelliniscat
The Reds Cracker Jack medical staff are on it once again.
This one belongs to the Reds
Looks like now they will wait and see. We all know eventually Williamson will have surgery anyway and he’ll end up being out longer.
Motor City Beach Bum
I think the Reds and Tigers match up well for a trade. The Tigers are in bad need of a SS and I would love to see them acquire McLain, hurt or not. The Tigers hopefully will just cut Baez and play backups for the rest of the year anyway, which would make the team better. Acquiring McLain would be all about next year. Arroyo could be another SS fix but he’s further away from the majors.
I’m not sure what the Reds need right now for a playoff push, but reading the comments it sounds like pitching and offence (1B? OF?)? The Tigers certainly have pitching and young players like Tork who might need a change of scenery or even Meadows? Canha is a vet, is playing well and can move around…short term fix until your young guys come back next year?
Lots of other pieces on both sides who could be in play there. Thoughts?
cguy
Reds are dead last (30th) in WAR from the DH position. They need a bat.. Again, I like Rooker a rh hitter w/pop, and reverse splits. Several years of control left.
Motor City Beach Bum
Yeah Canha is really the only good bat they could provide on that front and Rooker would be a better long term option since Canha is older and on a one year contract. Makes sense.
