Red Sox manager Alex Cora told reporters, including Ian Browne of MLB.com, following today’s win over the Tigers that second baseman Vaughn Grissom will need to be placed on the 10-day injured list due to what he termed a “mild” hamstring strain. Grissom exited the game after pulling up while running out a groundout earlier in the game, leading to catcher Connor Wong replacing Grissom at the keystone. According to Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic, Cora indicated to reporters that Wong’s surprise appearance at second base today was due to utility infielder Romy Gonzalez not being available, although he did not specify what was ailing Gonzalez or if he would be available tomorrow afternoon.
The news about Grissom constitutes another brutal injury blow for a Red Sox club that has struggled to stay healthy this year, particularly on the positional side. Grissom himself has appeared in just 23 games this season after being sidelined into May by a hamstring strain during Spring Training. Fortunately, as noted by Browne, that strain impacted his left hamstring, while today’s injury was a right hamstring strain. That Grissom’s injury is a new one should allow him to return to action more quickly than if he had re-injured the same hamstring as before, but he’ll nonetheless miss at least the next ten days without a clear timetable for his return to action.
When he’s been healthy enough to take the field, the start to Grissom’s Red Sox tenure has been a difficult one. He’s hit just .159/.209/.163 in 86 trips to the plate for Boston so far this season. That’s a particularly difficult pill to swallow for Red Sox fans given the fact that veteran southpaw Chris Sale, who the club swapped to Atlanta in order to acquire Grissom, has dominanted to a 2.12 ERA and NL-best 2.11 FIP in his first ten starts with the club, helping to anchor the club’s rotation alongside Max Fried in the absence of ace Spencer Strider.
While Grissom’s production to this point won’t exactly be difficult for the Red Sox to replace, his absence will only serve to further compound the club’s other positional injuries. Trevor Story, Triston Casas, Tyler O’Neill, and Masataka Yoshida are all already on the injured list, with Story out for the season and Casas also facing a lengthy absence. Fortunately, the club’s situation is not without silver linings. Cora told reporters (including MassLive’s Christopher Smith) earlier today that O’Neill’s ailing knee has responded well to a cortisone shot and the club figures to be without the outfielder for only the ten day minimum, a timeline which should allow him to return to action early next week.
Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe relayed similarly optimistic news regarding Yoshida, who told reporters that he’s no longer feeling any negative effects from the thumb injury that sidelined him last month. That won’t help the Red Sox in the short term, as Yoshida will still need to build up after a month of time rehabbing the injury before he can return to the big league club, but it’s still an encouraging sign for a team that figures to be without Grissom for at least a couple of weeks. Both Yoshida and O’Neill were hitting at an above-average clip overall at the time of their injuries, and if healthy should be able to step into the club’s outfield mix as key pieces alongside Jarren Duran and Wilyer Abreu.
The impending return of O’Neill, in particular, should be a relief for the Red Sox as it can provide the club with the opportunity to utilize versatile rookie Ceddanne Rafaela, who has mainly played center field for the club this year, on the infield dirt while Grissom is unavailable. In the meantime, the club figures to turn to Enmanuel Valdez and David Hamilton up the middle, with Gonzalez also a potential contributor at the keystone should he return to action in the coming days.
What a disaster that trade was
Too early to evaluate. I think Grissom will eventually produce more value for the Red Sox than Sale for the Braves. Sale was hurt from 2019 to 2023. I was happy to get something for him. Also, Sale is on pace to pitch 190 innings this year. He has already pitched more than half the innings he pitched last year which was the most he pitched since 2019. I doubt he can keep pitching at this pace.
Too early ? Vaughn hasn’t done a thing in all the chances the Braves and Sox have given him he’s a bust
Grissom has only played in 87 MLB games over 3 seasons and he had no spring training this year.
“Too early”
Yes, when you receive a 23 year old player with 6 years of control, judging the trade after 2 months is definitely too early. Especially when he’s traded for a pitcher that is notorious for getting injured.
Vaughn hasn’t done a thing in all the chances the Braves and Sox have given him
=====================
You meant the 39 ABs the RS have given him? Troll.
He’s had 80 ABs.
Whatever. Good for Sale so far. I’d still worry about him down the stretch but the man tried his best to come back for the Sox. The mistake was re-inking him when they did. As for Grissom, hopefully he becomes a key kog when the rest of the youngsters comes up.
He’s had 80 ABs.
=================
I was mistaken. I have no idea where I even got that number.
Sale is pitching well for the Braves, but had Sale not been traded, Houck most likely would have started the year in the bullpen and not a starter who has an ERA of 1.85, which is third best in the AL.
Not with the many pitching injuries
It’s literally been two months Let it play out a little more
It’s been like 2 months in baseball time.
Two months does not a trade make.
Sale was dominant today.Anybody see that.
I just saw that. His ERA went up by almost a run.
Sale got shelled yesterday… did you see that? (Says this before seeing other posts) The good part is our pitching is fantastic without him. We need offense, and once Grissom gets out of this injury state, he will be fine
I’m not soured on the future prospects of Grissom, but, please, we’ve seen both hamstrings, groin pull, no spring training, flu with significant weight loss—can they please rehab him for a full 30-days in the minors after he comes off the IL? He needs to get his sea legs under him again. His record says that he can pound AAA pitching–let’s see him do it, which would mean he’s recovered, and then give him 2B, instead of trying to make him work out as an even-MLB swap for Sale right from the start.
He’s hitting .150 with one extra base hit (a double) in 80 at-bats. It’s called hiding the player. On top of that, he gets to be the guy that the Sox traded the 2024 NL Cy Young Award winner for.
Leti – Sale can add 2024 to all his other Cy Young awards (he has zero of them). He will be hurt long before the competition gets close.
PS. Sale deserved a Cy Young while with the White Sox, but was robbed. I would love to see him win one this year, but doubt he can stay healthy…..keep him off a bicycle and it will increase his chances…
@letitbe… I absolutely agree. The FO seems incapable of admitting mistakes and will work hard to prove themselves right by showing everyone how wrong they are.
Grissom was called way before he was ready to go.
They are making a mistake by playing Duran every day also, especially with the added plate appearances of leading off. His average has dipped to the .250 range from over .300 and his K’s are rising drastically. The dude is obviously getting tired, but they will leave him out there until he ends up on 60 day or worse.
Anyone know who is being called up to replace Grissom?
Actually, that was @Horace. Oops
They are making a mistake by playing Duran every day also,
=====================
He has a 2.6 bWAR in about 1/3 of a season.
@Joe, my concern is wearing the guy down to point of getting hurt. There is no reason they get him days off. Heck, he could 10 war guy at end of season if they keep him fresh, don’t you think?
*Cant.
Jeez, I am a typo monster this week :/
DBH – The one thing I’ll say about Duran playing every day, it caused Cora to prevent him from running a lot which has hurt the team.
With that said, I support Cora playing Duran every day. Nice change of pace from prior years of managing.
@FPG, telling your lead off hitter not to run is kinda like telling a power hitter not to hit h9mers, isn’t it?
DBH – Totally agree, it’s disappointing. Duran is young enough and in good enough shape that he wouldn’t get worn down by stealing once or twice a game.
Maybe Cora is afraid of injury, but Duran doesn’t have the injury history that a guy like Acuna does.
Hopefully he’s not being showcased, if Anthony comes up soon then I’m afraid Duran will be the odd man out.
Were you one of the guys who complained Sale was injured too much or did you forsee him pitching this well with the Braves?
Who says Sale is 2024 Cy Young? He got shelled yesterday (ERA went way up) and we are only 2 months into the season.
Remember Pedie’s first month? I’m not trying to compare the two but give him a chance. How have Chavis and Dalbec done since their good career starts?
Did you love the movie Fever pitch?
What kind of liberal are you Steve? A left-wing liberal? A more centrist-liberal? Or as far right as you can go while still maintaining some semblance of a liberal ? What do you think of the term progressive?? Does a progressive slot into any of the above political silos?
Steve – Everyone loves Fever Pitch! They even named a WNBA team after Fever Pitch!
BOBBY TIME!!!
Maybe it’s Valdez Time. He hit two HRs today.
Think Valdez is more of a p/t player myself who struggles with the grind of everyday play and am a fan of the guy.
Meidroth is someone whom can play all over the IF, gets on base consistently, yet is overlooked. he’s the 1 who should be 1st to get the next callup. Not hard to clear a 40 man spot for him either. like half dozen possibilities can come up with right away and the team needs people with close to .400 obp, like meidroth has had since drafted.
Valdez has decent numbers in the Minors. Nothing eye popping, but the talent is there
Middling to decen hitter but inadequate glove. Best as a pinch hitter.
Valdez is too much of a free swinger. Plus he’s another lefthanded bat.
Valdez was in the lineup yesterday and again today. He WILL be the regular 2B until further notice. Cora has pretty much made that known. Grissom will be back in Worcester after the 10-day DL on another rehab assignment. It is Valdez’s job until Grissom is ready.
FULL THROTTLE BABY!!!! Sam Kennedy had the balls to say that the team is under performing. For this team to be hanging around .500 AND in the AL East should get Cora into the coach of the year discussion.
Goose – Funniest post of the year, thank you!
Another great trade by Breslow. Atlanta saw Breslow coming on this deal. A .150 batting average and no homeruns in 80 at bats. I remember when they picked up a power hitting 3rd baseman Andy Marte for Renteria. Marte was a complete bust. Years ago they traded Reardon for a double AA pitcher Murphy who was another bust. This team is 10.5 games out of first and not going anywhere because they have inadequate personnel, cannot beat good teams, and have a rd rate GM and owner who dies not care anymore
It’s been two months…
Nice to cherry pick over a long time with different people in charge. While ownership was likely involved in the Sale’s deal due to the money, probably not so much on the others. While You’re at it, why not bring up Danny Cater (and Mario Guerrero) for Sparky Lyle?

SOOOOOOOO GLAD the Braves traded him. Seen this coming from a mile away. The red flags were there. Only doubles power. Glove doesn’t fit anywhere in the infield. No DH material. Maybe he should try pitching.
any trade between a GFIN team and a rebuilding team needs time to evaluate. easy to say the red sox should have waited to trade sale but the guy risks an injury every time he makes a sandwich

==========================
Of course. Anyone judging a trade after 39 ABs is an idiot.
Before calling people idiots, maybe get right how many at AB’s he has had first.
maybe get right how many at AB’s he has had first.
====================
Fair enough.
Joe, where do you think the RS would be in the standings if Story, Casas, Yoshida never got hurt?
Same place they currently are. Third place in the division, maybe three to five more wins (maybe more losses too, who knows?).
3rd, but maybe 33-26?
Story is a big one, for his defense, and that also would have made it easier for them to cover 2B. Plus he got injured practically the first week of the season.
Casas is more a mixed bag. He provides some nice thump that they desperately need, but the difference between Casas and Cooper is maybe 30-40 runs over the course of the season. And that’s making Casas an All-Star. Losing him for two months is a game or two max.
Yoshida just isn’t that good. Better than his replacements, though, so maybe a win there.
So maybe 3-5 more wins like others are saying?
He has had 80 at bats and has no homeruns in those 80 at bats. Not looking great
80 abs isn’t a lot of abs
Replace the cheating manager. Replace the bland boring dump of a stadium. Replace the boring rip-off team logo (complete copy/ripoff of the Yankees). Replace the vile despicable fanbase. Replace the obnoxious idiotic lame pre-school level “tradition” of singing sweet caroline.
An easy mute.
Half of those are traditions, so it’s safe to assume you aren’t a real Sox fan.
Dump of a stadium? Should have stopped after the first line…
as a longtime braves fan I was super pizzed they traded him for a longtime broken down starter. (But A.A. made a deal with the Devil, Sale, and Lopez have pitched better than even AA could have dreamed!) When he was in the braves organization, and his cups of coffee, all the dude did was hit! I fear some hitting coach, in the majors or minors decided to fix what wasn’t broken. When I saw him when the Sox came to town he looked lost, his stance was different. Really hope they didn’t ruin him.
I have no idea how AA picked R. Lopez out as the guy who could seamlessly transition to a starter role and be lights out. I mean, the guy must have the special spidey sense going on or the Braves have a God-Level scout coming up with these recommends…
Red Sux got fleeced again.
Grissom is a classic AAAA hitter and cant play defense.
Knowledgeable Braves fans know about this guy.
Sweet Caroline…
Tomahawk Chop Chop Chop Hillbilly you’re how many games behind the Phillies?
What would be the talk if Sale had gotten hurt again … the Sox paid down the cost and bought a prospect. Was there another offer to compare it against?
Dewey – I’d love to know which prospects the Rangers offered for Sale.
It’s been two months..
Meanwhile in Atlanta…JK we knew Sale would be Sale this year. Grissom still has time to prove himself.
I just expect more out of a franchise like the Red Sox to put a better product on the field for the prices they charge. This is not a very good team and that goes into Bloom’s Reign of Incompetence for breaking up the 2018 team and having very little to show for it but a backup catcher sadly. I expect good signings not players with cheaper contracts and high upsides. Sadly this is not a very team on the field who cannot win at home.
