The Pirates have sent catcher Grant Koch outright to Triple-A Indianapolis, per the transaction log at MLB.com. Pittsburgh designated him for assignment on Tuesday when they recalled Henry Davis to pair with Yasmani Grandal behind the plate.
Koch, 27, played in his first three MLB games. A fifth-round pick out of Arkansas in 2018, Koch has played parts of six seasons in the minors. He has never been much of an offensive threat, running a .203/.284/.322 slash line in nearly 1200 plate appearances on the farm. Koch was hitting .167/.211/.259 with 25 strikeouts in 59 trips to the plate for Indianapolis when the Bucs selected his contract on May 28.
That first promotion came in tandem with a trip to the injured list for Joey Bart. The Pirates evidently didn’t want to promote Davis at that time. Koch got a few days in the big leagues and his first eight MLB plate appearances — he went 0-7 with six strikeouts and a walk — before the Pirates decided to turn to Davis. Pittsburgh also welcomed back Jason Delay from the 60-day injured list this week, though he was immediately optioned to Triple-A.
It’s the first career outright for Koch, who’ll stick in the organization. He’ll back up Delay in Indianapolis while returning to his previous role as a non-roster depth catcher. Koch would qualify for minor league free agency at the start of the winter if the Pirates don’t reselect him to their 40-man roster this season.
Baseball77
Assuming everyone stays healthy when Bart is ready to return, I wonder how the catching corp shapes up in Pittsburgh. Do they option Davis? Do they dfa one of Bart or Grandal? Or do they carry three catchers on the active roster?
TheMan 3
If Davis continues to play like he did last night, ( 3 ks and a throwing error), he’ll be sent back to Indy when Bart comes off the IL
holecamels35
Bart has been the best catcher on the team. It’s tough to say because it will look bad to send Davis back down but I feel like Bart deserves the job until he falls off a cliff.
TheMan 3
I completely agree, holecamels35. Bart is the better catcher and his experience has been a huge factor in this team’s performance
Davis on the other hand has been a major disappointment
YourDreamGM
Davis would have to really impress. Much easier to option him than lose the other 2 catchers who they really like and the pitchers really like.
TheMan 3
knock me over, I actually agree with you, Dream

Wish Koch could have gotten a hit. Guys like him, that may have been his first and last shot in the big leagues.

and I wish they hadn’t recalled Heller. It was like the Dodgers were hitting the ball off of a T with him pitching

When Bart comes back get rid of Grundle.
TheMan 3
They are so thin at the catcher position, and with Delay seemingly becoming injury prone, their only option is to send Davis back to Indy
At least Grandal doesn’t strike out every plate appearance left Dave does
tiredolderdude
I wish I could copy and paste Mark Madden’s column here from the Trib today. It discusses what so many of us have—-what a con job this owner and GM have been conducting.
Madden notes that the front office had to know that Jones and Skenes would join Keller in comprising one helluva starting staff—-and signed retreads to play positions around them
Madden. Mackey. Starkey. Glad media is tired of the propaganda coming from this pathetic management and owner
TheMan 3
I read his column, Tired. Obviously Mark understands how management has pulled the proverbial wool over the gullible fan, when they sign has beens because they are inexpensive and all the while telling those gullible people that this team can compete when it’s apparent they can’t or won’t
Cherington should have been a salesman, he shovels propaganda like the best of them
YourDreamGM
They can and are competing. I looked a day or 2 ago and there are only 4 nl teams with more than 3 wins than the Pirates. 2 games out of wild card spot. NL is weak. Bats are out of that brutal long slump. Even your boy Tellez. Last 15 days 350 average only 2 strike outs. Gonzales has been a real boost. A prospect most scouts I talked with wrote off and the Pirates fixed his problem.
TheMan 3
they are on last place, a familiar spot for this regime
And the bats can’t be considered out of that brutal slump when they continue to achieve double digit strikeouts and only scored one run on Wednesday
This team’s only consistent at strikeouts
CGG12
Nice plug, @tired. Not a Pirates fan but checked it out. Paints a good picture of the awful off-season. Couldn’t have used the $13.5+MM from the Chapman and Tellez deals to get a solid bat? Relievers are a dime a dozen and Tellez is a platoon bat at best. Jorge Soler, Rhys Hoskins, and Jeimer Candelario all signed in the $13-17MM range and would’ve been good boosts to that lineup.
Also enjoyed how Madden unintentionally proved his own point about the Pirates disappointing signings by typing Michael A Turner instead of Taylor.
tiredolderdude
@guilderc, you’re on point about those available players. I think what’s most interesting about Madden’s piece is that he is likely accurate in also using the crystal ball to foretell what they will sign if they are in sniffing distance of a wild card berth
Point is, they have the makings of a superior pitching staff for years to come, with average to below average hitters currently around them and nothing coming up from the minors.
This season will pass and we again will have more Tellez-type signings next winter
Two years away from being two years away. It never ends
YourDreamGM
Soler with his 215 average and Candelario at 238 with 58 k’s would fit right in. I wasn’t a fan of those contracts. Especially awful for Pirates. Reynolds Joe Olivares Cutch. Don’t see Soler as a better option and definitely not at that price. Candelario maybe if you were desperate for infield help. But Pirates aren’t, just 1b. Santana could have provided better production for only 1 year 5 million. Hoskins isn’t a bargain and would have cost the Pirates 20 some million. He still might not have came here for that. All those contracts would have been negative value disasters.
TheMan 3
As if the contracts of Tellez, Taylor and Chapman have been worthy of their respective costs
YourDreamGM
They have been worthy. That’s why they cost so little. They were coin flips. 3 4 million is Nutting. 20 40 60 million is real $.
TheMan 3
I meant that they weren’t worthy of having a contract
TheMan 3
Carlos Santana has 9 homers and 25 rbi to go along with having drawn 20 walks
He wanted to return to Pittsburgh but Cherington thought he was getting a better deal with Rowdy Tellez because he’s willing to take a $3.2 million dollar contract
Yet you actually believe that he’s going to make trades that will improve this team is laughable
If anything, Cherington will go into his annual dumpster diving session and sign more has beens and do so without having to trade away a prospect
TheMan 3
They as a team are in a familiar place under this regime, last place. While they only 5 games I believe under .500, they would need a decent win streak to overcome this deficit and become serious contenders for a wild card spot
Knowing how Cherington operates, as you said, Tired, he will wait until it’s too late then trade for someone who alone can’t get them over the hump and come next spring it will be another repeat of the same thing
Signing players who have nothing left to give
YourDreamGM
NL is weak. Almost everyone is a wild card contender. They could just hang around and make some few bargain trades and make playoffs. 29 grand to win world series. I got in at 50 but that’s still pretty good. 2500 to win central is good odds but I think they are far more likely to be a wild card team. Not to say they will do either but the numbers are good. It’s like I know I won’t win the Powerball but when it’s a billion dollars I will buy ticket. And if the Pirates make the playoffs and don’t “protect” Skenes Jones arms that’s a world series rotation.
User 1404051815
Please let me know where to bet
You’re missing the point. Madden only goes part of the way in saying in a 3-game series, Keller, Skenes and Jones are tough to beat.
If this was the 1980’s or before, I might agree. In the era of 5-6 inning starts, let’s temper it down. That’s a formidable starting group but they’re highly beatable beyond that
That’s the problem here. They don’t have a team that will hit them to a WC berth and common sense states that if they really wanted to win, they’d trade for a big time bat at 1st and/or another in the OF at deadline time
But they won’t
They’d opt to sign those two types in winter
Instead, they’ll choose to bring in guys who are beyond retread stage
Yeah Dream, the rebuild is over. Long live the rebuild.
YourDreamGM
You pay attention to the other teams? They aren’t anything special. The final wild card isn’t looking to be much above 500. Pirates will probably mess it up. Have to limit innings to protect arms. Asking price on trades was too high. Excuse excuse. But there may be a path if they choose to take it. $100 to win $50000 though is good odds. Usually teams with those odds you can’t even imagine a path.
User 1404051815
Oh I dunno
The Phillies look awfully good
The Dodgers line up is exceptionally strong
The Braves will still cause fits
Yeah, I like those odds. Just not a betting man
Buccoprojectory
Yes the pirates would be hard to beat in a 3 game playoff with skenes and Jones and keller…BUT, the other team will have the advantage. The pirates employ a moron as a manager
TheMan 3
Being a wild card team this year would be a nice accomplishment but it will only matter if they can go beyond the first round, something that they haven’t done in quite awhile
YourDreamGM
Exactly. You named 3 teams. 6 make playoffs. Not that Pirates are good. Just so many awful gms in baseball. These teams are spending sometimes hundreds of millions more and are worse same or only slightly better. Nutting helps a ton. Either doesn’t allow significant free agent spending or it’s the only time he pays attention and nips it. It’s good whatever the reason is. You should not want your team signing in demand free agents. If it’s a good year there will be 1 or 2 good free agent contracts.
TheMan 3
Different lineup for tonight’s game
Cutch isn’t playing, Davis is the DH
Tellez not in the lineup, Joe is playing first base and bats lead off. A recipe for disaster. Joe isn’t a very good defensive first baseman
Gonzalez batting 6th. I don’t understand how arguably your best offensive player is batting so low in the lineup
TheMan 3
Today’s game is a bullpen session using Carman, with an era of almost 7, as the starter
I don’t understand why Ortiz couldn’t be the starter, since he’s been one before
Yet Dream believes this team has the chance at a wild card position
YourDreamGM
My projections agree. What I believe is irrelevant as it likely wouldn’t be as accurate.
User 1404051815
Is Burrows coming back this season off the table? Whatever happened to VV?
YourDreamGM
Burrows should be back last I heard. VV is free agent and haven’t heard anything.
User 1404051815
Ortiz proved your point today. I know that as Dream has said, not everyone is pre-dispositioned to be a starter, but the Pirates sure like making most of their guys middle men
TheMan 3
Someone recently said that the Pirates offensive struggles have ended
Against a rookie pitcher, so far only 5 hits and no XBH
I don’t believe their offensive struggles have changed, or gotten better
Don’t look now but Tellez finally hit his second homer of the season
User 1404051815
Tellez had a day. Taylor knocked in a run. Maybe it just took them 3 months to get comfortable
YourDreamGM
Someone said Tellez has heated up. Offense is better. Tellez has been awful and Gonzales is here. Of course they are going to be inconsistent. There’s not super stars, no stars, no great players, maybe not even any good ones. Average and above average. Will do well vs weak stuff and struggle vs elite pitching. I didn’t watch the game but being a rookie doesn’t matter. Skenes and Jones are rookies and hitters struggle vs them.
User 1404051815
Yeah, well water is wet. Ok. Great
I feel good for Tellez. The guy was booed unmercifully here. Nice for him to have a day and hope it signals some change
You know, I get your overall point about guys like this and the failure to sign A-listers of make similar types of trades. I’ll go back to your dissertation about the Nutting plan here that emulates the Rays.
Shame the blueprint only failed because so many farm prospects were only that. Prospects who never showed they can play here
But they’re at a real crossroads they likely didn’t expect. A stud pitching staff that can be dangerous in a playoff series.
So how do they get there?
Stand pat? Hope for the best?
This home stand has likely pushed them further in that direction but it’s a long road to trade deadline time
YourDreamGM
Let’s talk about the past first then move onto the future. What a difficult rebuild. Think about what the Marlins had Stanton who was least valuable but Yelich on extreme team friendly deal. Ozuna. JTR. Nats Soto Turner Scherzer! Pirates just had guys. Above average guys. Huge blow right from the start. 2nd blow you inherit the development staff that couldn’t develop Cole Morton Glasnow. Any young talent you did have was drastically cut with the Archer trade. When Cherington said it was a build and not a rebuild he wasn’t kidding. Marte one of his best trade chips trade hasn’t produced. Peguero is just baseball luck or poor hitting development. Malone was just injury prone. Nothing wrong with his talent, go watch him pitch. Then the health crisis. Sure every team had to deal with it but not every team was trying to replace massive staff throughout there system and trying to salvage prospects from previous management. 2020 draft was weak. Normally there is a better player at 7th than Gonzales. They did about the best they could and it’s looking like it could work out. Development win. 2021 weak draft for #1 pick. Love the strategy to go underslot. Davis might work out still. Just not your typical #1 pick.
Cherington has done just fine with drafts and trades. You can only bring in whatever talent is available. I want more for Bell Taillon too. Too bad one was a weak dh and the other had 2 tjs and hasn’t pitched for 2 years. You take what you can get. I seen media say how could you not get more for Rodriguez a closer with all that control. 1 he was only a closer for the tanking pirates. 2 he obviously wasn’t good without cheating. Lucky they got what they did. Teams with these players were awful. But other teams should give elite prospects for them?
It’s easy to draft and trade for prospects. Now that Cherington has to trade prospects for mlb players we will see what he can do. Nutting hasn’t noticed the poor development yet. Another Archer trade would wake him up.
Good news outfielders are cheap. 1b are cheaper yet. Rentals make it the lowest priced talent. A bullpen arm who isn’t a closer won’t break the bank.
Who knows what the Pirates would do. They might be a few games too back. Don’t want Skenes Jones pitching playoff games. Maybe they go for it.
I would go for playoffs. Do you know how much revenue home playoff games bring in. With steelers pens down there is no better time for the pirates to win.
Mendoza Line 215
Tired- Long men are now very valuable. In the old days they were washed up starters. Now they are guys with just two good pitches. With starters going 5 or 6 innings now they can save 1 or 2 relievers a game.
Ortiz has found his niche and it would be stupid to change it up.
If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.
User 1404051815
Yeah, I’ve had to be dragged out of my coma as to what a good starting pitcher is all about. My thinking is too old school and the game has changed
Mendoza Line 215
Same with me young man.
I think that the overstressed importance of strikeouts has caused the pitchers to not be able to pitch as long and of course has caused them to injure themselves seriously and miss time.
But hitters are stronger and more powerful so perhaps it is the natural evolution..
User 1404051815
Yep. I get the correlation between throwing in the upper 90’s and wear and tear on tendons and ligaments. Tommy John surgeries were not even thought of when I was younger. So I have to accept pitch counts, too
But jeez. Today’s mismanagement of the bullpen led to a loss you don’t see in little league. I mean, starters have a shelf life of 100 pitches or so every 5 days and relievers just have to limit appearances in general?
TheMan 3
The jury is still out on the Davis draft, he still looks lost at the plate, swinging at pitches nowhere near the strike zone.
But he’s young and still has time to right the ship.
Anyone hear what Rowdy said after the game during his interview?
He said he went back to his batting stance because he knows what works for him, basically admitting that Haines’ tinkering wasn’t working
Reynolds should take note and go back to his, too. He doesn’t get enough lift on the ball with his knees bending and his stance lower to the plate. Standing in a more erected position he is able to drive the ball
Mendoza Line 215
I do not understand why they would mess with an established hitter’s swing unless something has changed by injury.
Young players like Davis who has been a good hitter should not be changed unless he proves over a year time that he cannot hit ML pitching.
The change to Gonzalez was obviously very good but he was not an established ML hitter and had not hit well last year.
TheMan 3
It’s time to send Suwinski back to Indy again and bring up Gorski. Dream says Gorski strikes out too much. Has he seen Jack?
Doesn’t protect the plate and gets called out on strikes or swings at pitches nowhere near the plate
And Davis needs to go back when Bart comes off the IL
By the way what exactly did Cherington see in Heller? He’s a walking T ball stand
What would it have hurt to allow Chapman to pitch multiple innings? They are off on Monday
YourDreamGM
Chapman doesn’t go multiple innings. Not a option.
TheMan 3
Thank you Manager Shelton, except that he did once in April
TheMan 3
Heller should be dfa tomorrow and Hernandez recalled. But I blame Shelton for this 10th inning catastrophe for not allowing Chapman to pitch multiple innings instead of using this has been bum, especially considering Heller was hammered for 6 runs in one inning against the Dodgers
User 1404051815
Yep, this one is an instance where management should issue refunds
Who was it here that was saying they were looking forward to seeing Heller pitch?
Hope whomever it was got enough of an impression. Sheesh.
Outrageous that you bring this guy in the game
I’m no fan of Chapman but he was easily the choice to pitch, even if that bullpen had been “overworked”
TheMan 3
Carman only pitched 1.2 innings yesterday, he was probably fresh enough to pitch the 10th inning because he started yesterday’s game
Still, it should have been Chapman, who if memory serves, pitched a 3 inning save earlier in the season.
They were 4-2 on this homestead despite Shelton’s poor managing decisions
Case in point, Ortiz should have been the starter in yesterday’s game and probably could have pitched into the 6th inning. Instead he relieved Carman and only pitched 4.1 innings and of shutout ball
User 1404051815
Yeah, have to be careful, TheMan3
If they pitch more than an inning, they might have their arm fall off or they’ll turn into a pumpkin
YourDreamGM
You think those 2 additional hours make a difference for Mlod? They don’t. You think a guy used to going 2 3 innings can just all the sudden throw 6? He can’t. Like Chapman sure they could if need be but that could lead to problems. Cherington would tell you blah blah blah short term war blah blah vs long term war blah blah blah.
TheMan 3
it was MLB1225 who said he was excited to see Heller pitch
User 1404051815
Yeah. And likely provided some analytics gobblety-gook to support that thought.
TheMan 3
Yep he did, including Heller’s whiff rate on his sweeper
It worked so well in today’s game he plunked 3 batters
YourDreamGM
Mlb is big time working in mlb doing video scouting. You are lucky he graced you with his presence.
User 1404051815

When I was a kid I watched all 4 major sports. Now it’s down to a minor league game with 2 good pitching matchups. Don’t even have to watch the entire game. Will try to catch more pirates games but those condensed games are fantastic. I could watch playoff basketball. No regular season. Should watch nhl finals. Playoff hockey is about as good as it gets. But pens stopped having playoff teams so haven’t paid attention. If they ever get a good gm and give sid 1 last run I would likely watch. By the time you work, feed, bath, there isn’t much time left in a day. Even if you are retired you have hobbies, house work and repairs, shopping. I am usually doing something on device and tv is just background noise. To just sit there for 3 hours and watch a game would be strange. Scouting some prospects for 4 innings is about my limit. And video games exist. If you don’t play you are missing out. Don’t say you are too old or they are a waste of time. There are so many types of games there is 100s of games for everyone. Cheap too. When I am not playing I am looking for free and 99 cent games. Not a huge gamer. I will go weeks months years without playing any at all and then play almost every night for a few weeks or months. The sports games are incredible. Not really my thing but instead of watching you are playing. I like ones where it’s like watching a movie except you are playing the lead. So many movies are from video games, they usually mess the movie up though. Or strategy games, like combat tactics and stuff. My fav thing on sports teams is the have modes you can be the gm. You can build your teams n see how you do. If you know nothing of video games do me a favor and type in YouTube Microsoft flight simulator 2024. Simply amazing. Not my type of game but it looks so incredible I will give a shot. This time next year I will be able to fly a plane.
TheMan 3
I’m supposed to be grateful for someone with direct knowledge of baseball because he has video access when the statistical numbers he’s revealed on several players haven’t translated into majors league experience
Sorry that I don’t feel grateful and I’m certainly not going to kiss his rear because of his “ presence “
User 1404051815
Similar story where watching sports is concerned. Money kills everything and it killed my interest. I love the games and have no regard for the guys playing them. Subsequently I root for the team with Pittsburgh on its chests but where personnel is concerned, well, I’ve never work a jersey with another guy’s name on the back. Never will.
First professional sports went down the drain with greed and corruption and then the NCAA followed. With the transfer portal and now, the advent of paying collegiate athletes when a 4 year education should have been enough, well, it’s like watching pick up or intramural games. No regard for these kids either. Hired guns with no appreciation for an education—more like a minor league approach, an avenue to play pro
So I’m finished with the greed, the boorish behavior. I watch less than ever
Video games? Just missed the advent of it all, happily. Grandsons play and I’m amazed at the graphics. So lifelike. But as far as playing, hey, find me a good pinball machine and I’m set

Skelton needs DFAd
YourDreamGM
Shelton had nothing to do with it. I am sure he would like someone better than Heller. He ain’t the gm though. Chapman only goes 1 inning. No option to use him 2. Analytics staff said Heller was the choice or there simply weren’t any other options because of usage.
User 1404051815
He mishandled pitchers the entire game, Dream. Any good manager thinks ahead to worst case scenarios
I get what you’re saying about personnel
That’s not the issue
In a close game especially—-and it was since the 5th—-you have to think ahead. Nicolas blowing up likely put a huge dent in the plan but sheesh, he should have had alternate plans.
I’m no fan of Chapman, again
But there’s no way he’s still sitting in the bullpen, unused
YourDreamGM
Chapman only goes 1 inning. Oldman3 memory isn’t up to the challenge because Chapman hasn’t thrown more than 1 inning this year. That’s what he signed up for. If need be he will go 1.1 1.2 but there was no need as Heller was available! Guy’s no spring chicken and set in his ways. You wouldn’t have used Chapman because if you weren’t on board with Cheringtons plan and analytics you would never be hired.
User 1404051815
Let me make an admission to you about my old man memory
I overlooked that Chapman threw an entire inning. Don’t know if I was dozing off or what
Nicolas completely screwed the pooch here. He and Heller should be on the shuttle to Indy
I was wrong.
YourDreamGM
Hey Bednar is good. Pitch him more than 1 inning. So what if doing that used to wear him down or put him on IL. He is older and fatter now so I think he can handle it. The 22 year olds only go 5 innings then bring in the 36 year old for the 6th 7th and they fat guy for the 8th 9th.

Mendoza Line 215
Paul- Heller should have never been called up.He has a 4.91 era in AAA.
Cherington likes him because his first name is Ben.
Shelton should never have pitched him in his first game up as he had just been recalled.
Shelton did not have much of a choice this time but I think that Carmen could have gone although he is shaky too.
I believe that Josh Van Meter could have done a better job than Heller.
In his short Pirate career he has been the cause of two losses in two games.
Ryan is no bargain but why was he not brought up?
Why was Hernandez sent down in the first place?
TheMan 3
Through 5 innings in yesterday’s game, Jones had thrown 83 pitches. If his limit is 100, why didn’t Shelton allow him to pitch the 6th inning?
He could have saved the bullpen from having to use Heller at all.
And I wonder the same thing, Mendoza, why was Hernandez sent down in favor of Heller?

They keep placing Hernandez on the shuttle while bringing up or holding onto any number of guys who seem to have control problems. Don’t understand the logic but it’s SOP where the Pirates are concerned
Meanwhile, I was truly hoping to see some spark from Davis at the plate along the lines of what Gonzales has shown. Something. Anything.
But we saw nothing.
