The Astros are 3.5 games out of the wild card and 4.5 games out of the AL West with 80+ games to go. How in the hell is that “clearly out of it”?
Canuckleball
No one ever said the Astros are clearly out of it.
The early part of the podcast talked about 5 teams who are clearly out of it. The Astros were not one of those.
Later, an emailer asked an Astros question and stated that:
“Clearly the Astros don’t have enough this year”
And then went on to suggest a guy they should think of trading.
The emailer was just saying that he felt the Astros aren’t a great contender this year and should think of doing some light roster clearing to get back an asset or two.

Do you know how quotations work?

yes

Pretty much two different concepts. 3 games behind Boston, and one of the hottest teams in BB simply does qualify for the latter statement. At this point, I’d be curious how big an underdog they are to finish 1st.
Thomas E Snyder
Hide and watch. The Astros will be in the ALCS.
Steve Adams
They’re not. We plainly said as much on the podcast. But that was a question from a listener asking about why Ryan Pressly hasn’t been talked about in trade rumblings. To which we replied by breaking down: A) Their recent play, B) His contract situation and C) the manner in which his salary and 2025 option would be problematic for CBT-paying teams even if the Astros DO fall out of it and listen on veteran players.
It was one of several questions from different readers/listeners about the Astros and their potential to sell, so even if the premise is flawed, we touched on it because it’s a topic that at least a few listeners were pondering.

Astros have, per Fangraphs, right about a 50% chance to make the playoffs

Is this the expert analysis that I’m missing out on paying for?

If I start paying for it, then I’ll miss the bizarre video ad of the mom and daughter flicking oatmeal at each other. Not even sure what the ad is for, maybe an HSA card, but I enjoy me some food splatter in the face every now and then.

Rockies are trash. Rodgers is an inconsistent hitter, but dude can play D. So I would trade him due to Rox have Amadore to plug in there.
As for McMahon, gotta trade him, Diaz, and Quantril. Get only young strong arm pitchers for the bullpen. The bullpen has been absolutely TRASH all year.
I’m not opposed to trading a McMahon/Bryant combo for a couple prospects. Bryant doesn’t want to be in Denver and is absolutely DONE. Trade to the A’s, so he can go home to Vegas in a couple years.
Murray Rothbard
Rockies will never be good unless Manfred changes the balls they use at Coors. Colorado’s ownership will never do what it takes to develop pitching, it might not even be possible
its_happening
Blue Jays woes are simple; they needed bats, didn’t get the bats, starting pitching isn’t as good/healthy as last year, bullpen isn’t as healthy/good as last year, Yankees/Orioles improved their teams.

Yep.

with shapiro and useless atkins running our Jays ,the team has gone backwards over the tenure..
Until they are removed and sent packing the Toronto Blue Jays will and are going nowhere !!
The 2 Cleveland Clowns did the same thing in Cleveland ….It’s why shapiro was let go…and unfortunately came to Toronto..

CTS – my issue is they are Rogers’ type of hires. Same thing with Godfrey/Ricciardi/Keith Law and the Oakland Moneyball brigade that got overmatched and outclassed. If not for Gillick/Ash’s scouting and development of Halladay, Delgado, Wells and others, that era would have turned out worse.

I recall having that conversation with a RS fan last year, when he was talking about how the BJs having more injuries than the RS, He was obviously making it up as he was going along, but other than Manoah imploding, the BJs would’ve racked up close to 160 starts from their regular rotation.
That’s almost impossible to duplicate.
its_happening
Yes JoeBrady it would be tough to duplicate.
Yankee Clipper
Does anyone know where the recent Guerrero-Yankees trade rumors came from? I’ve been hearing it more and more (from non-Yankees outlets) without being able to locate an actual source.
I know Vlad somewhat walked back his comments regarding the Yankees, but where did the original trade rumor that stemmed that question come from?
its_happening
Can’t remember Clipper. Did it stem from a breakdown between the Yankees and Vlad Sr before 2004 that lead to his signing with the Angels and the Yanks signing Sheffield?
Yankee Clipper
Yes, thank you, that’s where the original bad blood was created. But, I’ve been hearing/reading speculation about the Yankees-Vlad Jr. trade rumors.
I should’ve clarified it was Vlad **JR**. My bad for not clarifying which Vlad I was referring to.
its_happening
All is good Clipper. I knew what you are referring to. I believe (speculation) that it’s similar to the Griffey situation.

I never want to see someone get injured, but for the White Sox, the injuries to some of the SP’s available, particularly Luzardo, benefit them. Assuming the Tigers hold on to Skubal, the Sox now have two of the top available rotation arms in Crochet, who now clearly leads the market in overall value, and Fedde, who has extra value because of the affordability of his contract and extra year of control.
JoeBrady
Well, it seems like there is seldom a good time to be a WS fan, but they have three very good pieces to trade, including Robert. The question is whether they have the resolve to make the necessary moves.
The Saber-toothed Superfife
Harris is waiting in Detroit for Flaherty’s injury.
Has no gumption to trade Skubal or Olson.
It was said about 25 years ago, mid market teams will be reduced to farm clubs for the big market teams like the Dodgers and the Yankees. It’s about time they faced it and started acting like what they are.
No way can Detroit sign big, long-term contracts for guys like Boras’ Skubal.
They should not be afraid to make the necessary moves or to trade a star or potential star.
They should hire the Superfife.
Bingo, the farmers’ dog, approved this message.

A couple of off seasons ago, Blue Jays management decided that a defensive upgrade was needed. The solution was to get rid of outfielders Lourdes Gurriel and Teoscar Hernandez and replace them with Daulton Varsho and Kevin Kiermaierwho are hitting >207 and .201 respectively. Gurriel and Hernandez who have combined for 28 hr and 100 rbi while Varsh and Kiermaier have combined for 13 hr (11 by Varsho) and 37 rbi. I said at the time that was too much offense to give up for a team that currently ranks near the bottom in all offensive categories. Poor roster construction and expecting your pitching staff to throw a shut out or allow one or two runs a game is a recipe for what you see now. Management needs to be held accountable for these near-sighted decisions. Even with Hernandez and Gurriel in the lineup, the Jays were never a last place team an in fact were usually in the mix for a divisional title.

…and never fully replenished the lost offensive production.
Unfortunately in today’s baseball, players like Varsho is overvalued. People see WAR, and do not see the little things he does and does not do to hurt the club. Whether it’s not taking charge in the outfield, teams testing his arm, throwing to the wrong bag or being outmatched at the plate, WAR doesn’t properly measure some of these things. Jays fans want to say they won the Arizona trade. It’s a loss and it isn’t even close.
