Fans around baseball received exciting news today as veteran superstar Mike Trout told reporters (including Sam Blum of The Athletic) this afternoon that he is “basically pain-free” with only occasional soreness as he works his way back from surgery to repair a meniscus tear in his left knee that he underwent at the end of April. Initial reporting suggested a recovery timeline in the range of six weeks was possible for the 32-year-old based on similar surgeries other players had undergone previously, though the Angels cautioned that they intended to take Trout’s rehab slowly in order to minimize the possibility of re-injury.
They’ve certainly done that, as tomorrow will mark two months since Trout went under the knife and he has still not began running, as he told reporters (including Blum) earlier today. While he has no specific timetable for his return from the IL or even for himself to resume running, Trout indicated that he expects to be back by the end of July. Given the fact that Trout will almost assuredly require a rehab assignment of some length after a two-month layoff, that timeline would suggest that the star expects to resume running in relatively short order.
The possibility of Trout returning in the near future is certainly an exciting one, both for Angels fans and fans around the baseball world. After all, the 32-year-old veteran was long considered the game’s best player and is already a slam-dunk future Hall of Famer as an 11-time All Star who finished within the top 5 of AL MVP voting in nine consecutive seasons while winning the award three times. Trout’s career slash line of .299/.410/.581 gives him the 12th-highest career wRC+ in MLB history, ahead of legends of the game such as Ty Cobb and Stan Musial.
Prior to going on the IL this season, Trout had gotten off to an unusual start. The superstar slugged an incredible ten home runs in just 29 games prior to going on the IL, was striking out at a 21.4% clip that would be his lowest since the pandemic if maintained throughout the whole year, and boasted a strong 12.7% walk rate. While those elite peripherals would suggest that Trout was an early favorite to win his fourth AL MVP award this year, an eye-popping batting average on balls in play of just .194 left Trout with a slash line of “just” .220/.325/.541 in 126 trips to the plate prior to his placement on the injured list. While the overwhelming majority of hitters would be delighted to post a wRC+ of 138, that’s a far cry from Trout’s typical lofty standard.
Of course, this is far from the only injury that’s plagued Trout in recent years. The veteran has played in just 51% of the club’s games since the start of the 2020 season amid injury woes ranging from calf and back problems to a fractured hamate bone, in addition to this season’s knee surgery. Those injury woes have not only cost Trout nearly half of his games over the past half decade, but have also turned his contract with the Angels, which runs through the 2030 season, into a relative bargain for a future Hall of Famer into a deal that the Halos might have trouble moving on from even if both the organization and Trout himself were to decide that they’d like to part ways.
Talented as Trout is, it’s extremely unlikely that his return will be able to spur Anaheim into the postseason. The club’s 35-46 record leaves them 10.5 games back in the AL West and nine games back of the final AL Wild Card spot with a record better than only the lowly A’s and White Sox among all AL clubs. To even finish the season with a .500 record, the Halos would need to play at a .568 clip the rest of the way, on par with what the Braves have done in the first half this year.

“Only to lose in the postseason”..The Arizona Dbacks last year proved how fluky the playoffs can be and you’re seriously underestimating how hard it is to be a playoff participant for 10+ straight years as the Dodgers have done. Virtually every team in the league, save five or six teams, would trade their own last 10 yrs for the Dodgers’ last 10 years.

Comparing an active player’s slash lines with people who have completed their career is both misleading and a waste of time. Everyone’s slash line drops at the end of their career unless they start doing steroids in their mid thirties; yes I mean Bonds.

So, Arte is responsible for Trout’s injuries? Arte has spent a lot of money on free agency and greenlit several deadline trades last year including Lucas Giolito, Reynaldo Lopez, Randal Grichuk, CJ Cron, Mike Moustakas, Eduardo Escobar, et al. Trout’s annual injuries are a big reason why the Angels have been mired in mediocrity and collapse in the second half.

In a reality, Trout needs to be a full time DH. Odds are of the Angels trading Trout are very low because that depends on him to a team willing to take on the rest of his contract. I always feel the Cubs are the one team that take on Trout’s contract and if they use him a full time DH in the middle of that line up that actually improve their offense. Again, this all depends on Trout if he would want to leave the Angels with ever having a chance to win a chance to winning a championship.

Cat Mando
brodie-bruce….. the team he grew up with was the Phillies. Trout was born and raised in South Jersey (Millville to be precise). He was such a fan that his father related this story a few years back……
Trout’s father, Jeff heard Mike scream from his room. (Trout lived at his parents home in the off-season for several years after signing with the Angels)
“Dad, we got Roy Halladay!” Mike yelled. To which his Dad responded: “the Angels got Halladay?”
“No, the Phillies did!” Mike replied. “Son, you’re a member of the Angels. What’s with this we?!”
That said, the chances of a trade are slim. After Trout sign his last extension, crushing the hopes of Phillies fans (myself included) he said he actually preferred having a “2 coast life”.
He owns several hundred acres of farm and wooded land (he is an avid hunter in the off-season) near Millville so many thought a Philly trade (or signing if he hit FA) was inevitable but he also mentioned the add pressures of playing where he lived. He mentioned little things like being bombarded with ticket requests from everyone and their uncles every time (as few as the may be) the Angels come to Philly and not wanting to deal with that kind of stuff year round. When he does come to Philly all he wants, besides playing, is to see his family and a few friends and his parents always bring him a bag of 6 burgers, with secret sauce (Trout’s normal order), from Jim’s Lunch on East Main Street in Millville.

Rsox
Dave Dombrowski only does that deal if the Angels take the entirety of Castellanos contract as well as kicking in money for Trout and nothing but low level Minor leaguers as the return
LordD99
Which obviously means there would be no deal. Nothing in it for the Angels.
libertybell444
True castellanos’ salary has to be taken by the angels and the Phillies would then take on the balance of Trout’s money remaining. Probably have to ship off Rojas and a pitcher too. Which I’d be all for.

No one will take on his contract completely. The Angels will need to eat at least $10,000,000 per year. And if they are able to find someone to accept these terms they need to jump at it.

deepseamonster32

But the Angels could trade him if they’re willing to eat the money.
LordD99
I disagree on full-time DH. He’s injury prone, but I’m not sure there’s evidence that DHing reduces injuries. (reference: Stanton, Giancarlo). DHing might even lead to increased injuries due to inactivity between ABs. Maximize his skillset on the field when he is healthy.
Rsox
DH’ing may not be the answer but moving to corner might help
orange2001
Agreed. Most of Trout’s injuries came while batting or running (being a DH won’t prevent this). Not sure if any have come while playing defense.
LordD99
Yes. As I noted above, Stanton’s injuries have come running to 1B after being cold on the bench between ABs, or rounding 2B, or fouling pitches off his body while batting. Trout’s still a good OFer. Use that skill, but perhaps move him to the corner at Rsox suggests since he’s now in his early 30s.
Rexhudler86
OK once again trout has a ntc, has said numerous times he wants to win a world series with the angels and leaving would be the easy way out. He also wants to play with one team in his career the reason why he signed a long term deal. So yeah trout is going to Philly for a bag of peanuts and a low level prospect and his contract paid off get out of here.
collaselraptor
He hasn’t played a full season since 2022, and before that not counting the pandemic it was 2019. You can minimize his injury history all you want because he’s a great player, but that doesn’t take away the fact that he’s always hurt, and always on the injured list.
LordD99
As a baseball fan, I look forward to his return. There’s also no reason for the Angels to rush him back at this stage.

As is so often the case with the writing of Nick Deeds, this article left me confused. How exactly has Trout’s recent injury history rendered his contract “a relative bargain”? Am I missing something here?
DickDollars
That last sentence you’re referring to is a bit of a disaster. If you remove the word “into” from “into a relative bargain”, I think Deeds is suggesting that the contract “for a future Hall of Famer” could have been looked at as a bargain but now might be hard to ditch if the Angels want to move on. I suppose he’s saying teams would now be less willing to take on the money in a potential deal.

If this sounds familiar he said this last year coming back from his wrist injury:
It’s definitely sore, but I’ve talked to some doctors and they’ve told me it can’t get injured more,” Trout said. “There’s definitely going to be soreness up there, but I’m just happy to be out there with the guys.”
So now he’s “pain free” but there’s still “soreness” .so when Mike trout says he still has soreness and hasn’t even ran, Im not buying it. Do you think it’s any coincidence this news comes as they have their largest win streak in like 5 years? It’s more Angel BS to try to sell some idiots the idea the Angels are in “contention” for a Wild Card. And “crazier things have happened”
angelsbroncosfan
The Angels, because of good teams they play in July, could find themselves in contention for the Wild Card. Could find themselves in a tricky situation at the deadline. Let’s be honest, Caden Dana is the only prospect close to major league ready at the moment. There are only two players, I would even consider moving him for. But that wouldn’t even come close to getting either one of them. Personally I’d rather have them be sellers at the deadline. But if they decide to move Detmers to improve their chances this year and next year, I would understand

Angels get:

Mick Abel RHP (#3)
Samuel Aldegheri LHP (#16)
Jean Cabrera RHP (#20)
Gunner Mayer RHP (#40)
Simon Muzziotti CF (#17)
Carlos de la Cruz RF/1B (#9)
The Angels finally free Trout and he gives the home town Phillies the RH bat they need for the stretch run. Detmers becomes the 5th starter for the Phillies, controllable for several years. Detmers has shown flashes, maybe the Phillies can harness his stuff. If they agreed to take on that Trout salary, which only a handful of teams even could, they could get him without trading their future 3B (Aiden Miller), future CF (Justin Crawford) or future SS (Starlyn Caba). Walker offsets 36mil of it, which would keep the Phillies just below that last luxury tax threshold. Imagine a lineup that looks like this after the Allstar break: This is actually a realistic hypothetical too.
1. K. Schwarber DH
2. T. Turner SS
3. B. Harper 1B
4. M. Trout CF
5. A. Bohm 3B
6. JT Realmuto C
7. B. Marsh LF
8. N. Castellanos RF
9. B. Stott 2B

1. T. Turner SS
2. M. Trout DH
3. B. Harper 1B
4. A. Bohm 3B
5. JT Realmuto C
6. N. Castellanos RF
7. E. Sosa 2B
8. C. Pache CF
9. W. Merrifield LF
Sit Schwarber vs. LHP to allow Trout to DH once a series or every few games, keeping both of them healthier for the playoffs.

The Angels will have an interesting dilemma in the next few weeks with Rendon due back in the next week and Trout in 2-3 weeks.
Who do you send down/ release once Rendon comes back?
Rengifo needs to stay in the line up. Calhoun seems to be the new everyday DH. Guillorme has done a great job as a super utlility, Drury is too good to just cut ties with. To me that means you have to say good bye to the feel good story of Sano staying on with them Angels.
Who do you send down/ release when Trout comes back? It seems like it would be Pillar, but I am not at all enamored either Moniak nor Adell.
And yes I do realize the most obvious is to try and trade, especially since the trade deadline is looming, but I thought it might be a fun debate to see what all you think.
PLEASE….do not say trade Trout, don’t be that idiot.
Try and keep is somewhat intelligent, which I know may be a big ask for a few people.
