The Mets announced Monday that catcher Tomas Nido has been released following last week’s DFA. He’s now a free agent. The Mets will remain on the hook for the balance of this year’s $2.1MM salary (minus the prorated league minimum from any new team that plugs him onto the major league roster).
Nido, 30, is in the second season of a two-year, $3.7MM deal he signed to avoid arbitration in the 2022-23 offseason. The Mets outrighted him off the 40-man roster midway through the 2023 season, and he chose to accept the assignment, as electing free agency would’ve required forfeiting the remainder of the guaranteed money on that contract. Nido was selected back to the majors earlier this season when Francisco Alvarez tore a ligament in his thumb. He passed five years of big league service time during this most recent stint with the Mets, meaning that even if the team had again passed him through outright waivers, Nido now would’ve had the option to reject the assignment while being able to retain the remaining guaranteed money on his deal.
In 32 games with the Mets this season, Nido took 90 plate appearances and batted .229/.261/.361 with three home runs and his typically strong defensive grades. Nido has long been regarded as a high-end defensive backstop but has never coupled his fine glovework with much in the way of offensive firepower. His career .214/.251/.313 batting line is generally in line with the small-sample production he posted in this year’s 90 trips to the plate.
Now that he’s a free agent, Nido will have the ability to sign with any team and would only cost his new club the aforementioned prorated major league minimum for any time spent in the bigs. Teams like the Marlins, White Sox, Cubs and Rays are light on catchers and have received dismal production from the position this season, while the Phillies are reportedly on the lookout for some veteran depth in the wake of J.T. Realmuto’s knee injury.
Old York
Oh well. Someone will pick him up. He’s a bench guy with a wRC+ of 80. Could find worse out there with a full-time job.
rct
You’re only looking at the small sample size from this year. His career wRC+ is 57. He’s an awful hitter that occasionally gets a little streaky. A full-time job is not in Nido’s cards.
BannedMarlinsFanBase
It always amazes me how Mets fans overly praise a guy when he’s a Met, but then critique his flaws when he’s gone.
Chris from NJ
Who is overly praising Nido? I guess all of those delusions you had this off season of another playoff appearance are finally getting to you. Nido is a back up catcher who just might land the starting job in Miami. Off topic but Miami should have sold high on their pitching. The return for Luzardo and Garrett will be so diminished because of the seasons they are having. You can hope the O’s panic and throw some prospects at Miami but I don’t see it. And don’t most fan bases critique players who leave said team? Especially under circumstances some leave New York in. E.G. Jorge Lopez. Nido is a glove first backup nothing more or less
rockiesmagicnumber
that’s every fanbase
Old York
@rct
Trade deadline deals happen because of small sample size results. Honestly, he’s a backup catcher that’s focus is defense first. Teams could do worse. Guy was providing 0.5 WAR so far this season so teams like the WSox and Angels could probably benefit from him being on the team.
jyosuckas
They didn’t try to outright him to AAA for depth? Weird
mlb fan
“Outright him to AAA”.. I’m pretty sure he can’t be outrighted without his consent(5 yrs svc time & previous outright)and that was unlikely to happen since he’ll likely have better Major League opportunities and gets to keep his salary either way.

“The Mets will remain on the hook for the balance of this year’s salary”
if i had a dollar for every time i heard that
i’d be as rich as these major leaguers
Sunday Lasagna
@johnny Utah
There are 1.238 players who have ever played for the Mets. If the Mets had released every one of them while they were under contract and “remained on the hook for the balance” and you had a dollar for each one. You would have $1,238.
…major leaguers are a wee bit more rich than that!
mlb fan
“You would have $1238″…I doubt most jokes could withstand real life analysis, dissection or scrutiny.
PocketSand
It may have happened 1238 times, but that doesn’t mean he has only heard it that number of times.

Not to be a ball buster or nothing but why would Nido be making millions? Just about any catcher in the minors would have to be just as useless. Why would the Mets even hire a guy like Nido?
Johnny utah
why would mets sign/acquire any of their garbage? nimmo, mcneil, houser, tyrone, narvaez, dj stewart, wendle, quintana, ottavino, the endless parade of garbage pitchers they keep releasing then re-acquiring then releasing again and again and again. this franchise is run by clowns. not professionals. they should wear a curly red wig and juggle bowling pins to complete the act.
Roll
@Johnny Utah
what sad is these clowns know how many days there are in a month. Can you say the same?
hawkvet
Houser stunk as a starter but he has reinvented himself as a bullpen. guy. Fingers crossed he can keep it up.
Johnny utah
@hawk
i got my fingers crossed too
mets only have the 3rd worst record in the NL
and have 9 teams ahead of them for the wild card
so hopefully houser continues pitching well out of the BP and mets can finish within 8 teams of the wild card
Roll
well they are ahead of your schedule … there are only 6 teams ahead of them for the wild card and only 1.5 games out as they also own as of right now the tie breaker over the padres.
Johnny utah
@roll
there’s 9 tms between braves & mets. serious Q bec i’ve lost count, how many total teams get into playoffs these days? all 30?
also, being on pace for 90 losses and still “in the race” is a testament to manfraud’s ridiculously insane expanded playoffs. some day we’ll see a team lose a 100 gms and squeeze into the postseason. whatever it takes to retain whatever handful of fans are still interested in this pathetic game he’s turned it into
JohnnyUtahSmells
JOHNNY
QUICK QUESTION. BEFORE YOU MUTE ME ….WHY DO YOU WATCH EVERY GAME AND COMMENT ON EVERY ROSTER MOVE THEY MAKE IF YOU HATE THE FREAKSHOW CIRCUS RUN BY CLOWN IDIOTS?
Roll
3 wild card teams and right now san diego owns the last wild card at 37 – 38 the met are at 33-37
so they could potentially have a better record if they win out or more likely same or slightly worse hence only one and a half games out. They have been on a tear lately so you never know especially as the rangers i believe have not been doing well.
Johnny utah
@roll
3 WC tms wow
Considering how poorly constructed the mets are, the fact that there’s 3.5 months to go & they’ll probly collapse like usual, and jumping ahead of 6 teams is very difficult, i highly doubt they make it but anything’s possible in 2024. Its a crazy world, mets making postseason wouldnt be the most shocking thing i’ve seen this year. Still pathetic that tms on pace for 90 losses are in “postseason race” atleast agree with me on that
Roll
@johnny
I would again have to disagree with you because if you actually watched baseball you would know that since it was introduced 2 season ago the teams in the world series have been mostly been the extra wild card spots. The Diamondbacks last year placed 6th and the Rangers placed 5th. The year before the Astros were the number 1 team but the Phillies placed 6th. Also to add to that the phillies the year they made the world series were “pacing” to 90 losses around this time as well. So if you want to be in the world series currently odds are you are aiming for the extra wild cards. Maybe keeping the rhythm of not skipping too many days helps who knows.
If we are going by “pacing” the pace of the last 10 games were 8-2 so by that “pace” to finish out the season which is 92 games have them winning around 70 games or so, which means they would be 100+ win team. Thats also without their ace pitcher. Do i think that will happen? not a chance, but i still think they will end up just under 80 games won assuming there is not a sell off which is what i have said since before spring training. JDM i thought might bring em to 500 until they lost senga for quite a long stretch now.
Johnny utah
i dont wanna get into a long exhausting discussion about expanded playoffs. it sucks. there’s no Q
nobody wants to see 80 win dbacks in the WS except people from AZ. that was the most boring WS in a long time. and even if it was exciting its still ridiculous that a tm barely above 500 wins a pennant and dodgers who win 100 every year get bounced. thats on them, good tms need to win. but i liked it alot more when it was fewer tms. 3 div winners + 1 WC was beautiful. and produced some of the best postseasons and world series of my lifetime. and my team never won. just speaking from a purely objective fans pov.
“if you actually watched baseball ” the f does that mean? is that supposed to be an insult?
anyway expanded playoffs is only here so more tms can be in it, more teams make more $, manfraud gets more deals with fox and tbs and more $ for mlb, more $ for owners, more hot dogs stuffed in naive fans mouths who are now poor bec they spent their holiday bonus to take little timmy to see a pointless wild card game where 110 win la dodgers lose to 80 win dbacks. its dumb. plain and simple. born out of greed. has nothing to do with improving the game. it hasnt improved the sport 1 bit. regular season means nothing. teams wont go after big FAs bec who cares about winning a division with superstars when you can squeeze into the playoffs with 84 wins and jimmy bumblef**k on your team.
Roll
“if you actually watched baseball”
Its exactly that a statement you have just come on here to troll and pretend you know things.
One example the last time it was 4 teams for the playoffs was back in i think was 2010 or earlier which manfred was not the commish so you can not blame him for something that happened before him. He started as commish less than a decade ago. He just recently expanded it to the 6th playoff teams 2 seasons ago.
Another example is not knowing how the IL works. Saying why did the mets not put him on the 60 day which means he would still be ineligible and not helping during this run they have going and would be back next week
I can point to many many more examples, but i dont feel like going back to more threads.
The phillies surge to the world series the year before made for great entertainment and even as a mets fan i hated that they were going nuts but in the end it made for great baseball. Underdogs make for great games and stories. How about when the Giants beat out the undefeated Patriots in the superbowl.

JOHNNY UTAH MADE ANOTHER CLOWN FREAK SHOW CIRCUS COMMENT.
THIS IS ALL HE IS CAPABLE OF.
HE IS NOT KNOWLEDGEABLE ABOUT MLB FRANCHISES, THE SPORT ITSELF, FINANCES, SALARY CAP/DEADCAP $, FREE AGENCY (DOMESTIC OR INTL) AND NOW WE CAN ADD MATH TO THE MIX. JOHNNY DOESN’T KNOW!!!!!!

League minimum is $740,000. They signed him for a little more so that they would have him on call in AAA…..and it worked last year.
Sdubs
Calls a good game. Does have his moments at the plate. Look at all the offensive cather numbers, before jumping the gun. Nido also seemed to be great for the clubhouse and an all round good guy to me.
Roll
its mainly he had one very good season a couple years ago and was a very good defensive catcher. He fell apart a couple years ago, i believe they said he had vision issues (think drury) so that once that was fixed he would produce better.
You could also ask the same of dom smith too. He is a starting first base currently for the red sox (injuries and no production of others) and is making i believe the same as Nido as a free agent. He is ok defensively at a position that most convert to when they cant play anywhere else.
hawkvet
Too bad, I have no doubt he’s a nice guy, but he wasn’t really contributing. to the team.New guy Torrens is a more valuable asset..

watch… Travis D’Naurd (sorry if spelled wrong)… But Travis 2.0

Better hang on to these receipts, pops.

I will lol. nothing surprises me anymore… it’s like no one can play for the Mets until they leave the Mets… so I’ll just wait and see lol
Flanster
……who has turned into a solid backup catcher!!
jmaggio76
agreed. I don’t think nido has the skill as Travis, at all.. but the comment was more sarcastic than reality. but… at the same time, everyone plays better when they leave this damn team
raisinsss
So true. There’s a whole rotation out there of “the ones that got away” who were, at one point, much better and cheaper than the current rotation.
Roll
big difference is Travis had a bat in the minors Nido did not.
orange milk
Nido one a battle title in their division in the minors a few years back
andremets
That was like ten years ago
jmaggio76
he did. but once he came to Citi he didn’t really produce. he did have a few good seasons I believe, and I wonder if he were given a better chance… but he scored in Tampa and then Atlanta.

Nido as D’Arnaud 2.0?
Wow!
So, I guess you’re the guy that, if you were dating Melissa McCarthy, you’d be scared to break up with her because you’d be scared that she’ll all of the sudden turn into Margot Robbie.

I Nido new job!

Mets have gotten replacement level production from Tomas Nido over the years, nothing special but not bad for an 8th round high school catcher. Wish him nothing but the best wherever his career takes him! Goes to show how far being a good defensive catcher can take you in baseball
