The Mariners placed Bryan Woo on the 15-day injured list due to a right hamstring strain before tonight’s loss in Tampa Bay. Seattle recalled reliever Collin Snider from Triple-A Tacoma to take the vacated active roster spot.
Woo left last night’s start in the fourth inning after experiencing the leg discomfort. The M’s sent him for imaging today. Woo told reporters he was diagnosed with a lower-grade variety of strain, though he wasn’t sure of the recovery timetable (X link via Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times).
It’s the second injured list stint of the season for the second-year righty. Woo started the year on the IL with elbow inflammation. He had another scare a couple weeks ago when forearm discomfort led the team to scratch him from a scheduled start and send him for testing. An MRI fortunately came back clean and Woo was able to make two more starts before the leg issue.
A hamstring strain is far less of a long-term concern than any elbow or forearm injury would be. It’s nevertheless a disappointing setback for a pitcher who has been amidst a potential breakout season. Woo owns a sparkling 1.77 ERA in 40 2/3 innings. While he’s running a modest 18.7% strikeout rate, he has only walked three out of 150 batters faced. Woo has only allowed three runs in two of his eight starts.
Manager Scott Servais was noncommittal on who will step into the rotation spot (link via MLB.com’s Daniel Kramer). The M’s have off days on Thursday and next Monday, so they could get by without a fifth starter until late next week. Emerson Hancock has been Seattle’s top depth arm, taking eight starts. The former sixth overall draftee has struggled to a 4.79 ERA while striking out 13.5% of opposing hitters. The M’s tabbed left-hander Jhonathan Diaz for a spot start when Woo was scratched a couple weeks ago, but Hancock would’ve been on short rest that day.

Who cares, they’re imploding fast

Even so, they’re still 5 games up so I’m guessing a lot of people.

Team is not built for playoffs, especially after this. Sorry, but come October the Astros will rule this division.

Is he of Korean descent?
Bill the Cat
Why would that matter? And why wouldn’t you just google it if you need to know something that’s so unimportant?

Nah, Bryan is actually Polish, the Fam immigrated from the gulags,
His actual birth name is Bryshnius Wojsztajkowsjzkski

Diaz was better in his one start than Hancock has been in any of his 8. But unless they can make a deal for guys like Yandy Diaz, Isaac Paredes, or by buying low on Arozarena, now, as in tomorrow after the game, that 10 game lead will be gone by next week.

And so it begins, the Mariners cannot hit the ball. It doesn’t matter that they canned the hitting coach they can’t hit!!. They swing at everything out of the strike zone, and when a pitch is over the plate too many times they don’t swing at it resulting in them having a bad pitch count, strike three you’re out of their is the case, again too many times. What are they going to do about it? You can tell those players remain aggressive but be more discriminating on those pitches, aggressiveness provides it’s own energy ⚡which is needed in providing momentum, a positive impact on the game. BTW. I like the energy that the callups have provided Bliss having the edge over Polanco it would seem. Polanco looks like a deer with his eyes caught in the headlights. I hope I’m wrong but sometimes a player needs insulation in the lineup to better perform, perhaps a confidence issue or to be fair an adjustment period. In any case I prefer Bliss in the lineup but then baseball ⚾politics plays a part in this. Second base has long been a black hole since Cano left it would be sour grapes if Polanco didn’t work out but Bliss does look promising. I would also like to see Locklear get more playing time these new guys are hungry so they come with this built in energy that lately has been missing, they could use an energy infusion. This up an coming schedule looks brutal this will be a real test on how things will turn out for them. Smooth sailing Mariner fans, boys, and girls.
This one belongs to the Reds
There will be no pitching Woo for a while at least.

The M’s have Dallas Keuchel in AAA Tacoma. He’s been decent overall there. Might be time to see if there’s anything left in the big-league tank. Many of us M’s fans were hoping for Blake Snell. Glad that didn’t happen. Gilbert and Kirby have been really good, Castillo not as much. And Miller has been only ok. We’ll see what happens but if the bats don’t heat up, we’re in trouble.

Only problem is, Mariners sent Dallas to brew crew, and Dallas caught a quick flight yesterday and here today in a matinee day game he is on the bump for the Brewers., and looking good early vs Texas.
It is strange M’s gave up on him so fast, since Dallas looked solid in Tacoma.
And, SEA is righty SP heavy, having a Leftie mixed in is not a bad idea.
More strange and curious Mariner FO decisions.
