Yankees first baseman Anthony Rizzo has been diagnosed with a fractured radial neck in his right arm, report Ken Rosenthal, Brendan Kuty and Chris Kirschner of the Athletic. The Athletic writes that Rizzo will not require surgery but is likely to miss around 4-6 weeks. Though the Yankees haven’t announced the diagnosis, they’ll certainly place the first baseman on the 10-day injured list before tomorrow’s series opener against the Orioles.
Rizzo was injured in last night’s loss to the Red Sox. The veteran hit a slow grounder to Boston first baseman Dominic Smith. Smith flipped to pitcher Brennan Bernardino, who was covering the bag, but Rizzo collided with Bernardino when Smith’s throw was behind him. Rizzo landed awkwardly on his right hand and had to come out of the game.
Oswaldo Cabrera came off the bench to play third base with DJ LeMahieu kicking across the diamond. That’ll likely be the corner infield tandem for the next couple weeks. It’s not a great pairing for a team trying to hold off the Orioles in what should be an extremely competitive division race.
LeMahieu lost a good chunk of the season himself. He fractured his right foot in Spring Training and wasn’t able to make his season debut until May 28. The two-time batting champ hasn’t gotten into a groove. He’s hitting .188 with no extra-base hits through his first 15 games. While LeMahieu certainly won’t continue to perform that poorly, he has only been a slightly above-average hitter over the last three seasons. Between 2021-23, he hit .258/.345/.375 in nearly 1800 trips to the plate.
That’s not the level of power production typically associated with the first base position. Of course, Rizzo hadn’t provided much of an offensive impact this year either. His .223/.289/.341 batting line over 291 plate appearances would easily be his worst pace since his abbreviated rookie season more than a decade ago. LeMahieu should be able to top that production, though the Yankees will now need to turn back to Cabrera for a significant role.
The switch-hitting Cabrera had a great first couple weeks before falling into a major slump. He’s hitting .237/.275/.350 in 56 games overall. LeMahieu’s return had pushed him to a utility role, but he’ll step back into the starting lineup for the time being. The Yanks don’t have much in the way of experienced first base depth in the minors, but former 12th-round pick T.J. Rumfield is hitting .303/.358/.454 in 47 Triple-A contests. Jon Heyman of the New York Post notes (on X) that catcher/first baseman Ben Rice — owner of a .275/.393/.532 slash in 60 games between the top two minor league levels — may soon hit his way to the majors.
Infield help could be a summer priority for GM Brian Cashman and his front office. Rizzo’s reported timeline leaves open the possibility of a return before the July 30 deadline, but he won’t have much time to demonstrate he has turned a corner offensively. The combination of LeMahieu, Cabrera and the currently injured Jon Berti haven’t provided much at third base, while Gleyber Torres is amidst a rough year at the keystone. There aren’t a ton of obvious trade candidates on the infield, particularly if the Rockies hold Ryan McMahon. More opportunities could open up if teams drop out of the playoff picture over the next month and a half.
Is it inappropriate to say tough break?
Seriously crappy news though. I like Rizzo.
Not sure he’s ever recovered fully from the concussion. Even his fielding seems off.
@lordd99
Now I never wish injuries on a player but maybe this is a blessing in disguise, this gives him a chance to mentally reset and hopefully right the ship. I may have not cared for the teams he’s played for (especially the cubs) but I’ve always respected the grinder players.
He seems well-liked by teammates and the opposition. I was hoping for a comeback but now I’m wondering if it will ever come. I think he turns 35 this season. Age defeats all.
@ lordd99
Unfortunately you may be right but I’m still going to hold hope that he has 1 good surge or year to go out on top.
My lord do you realize he is going to be 35 yrs old and was not exactly a stud when the signed him 2 yrs ago! He is old , simple as that and needs to retire
You get out of here with that 35 is old crap, I turn 37 next week and still have dreams of playing in the Show when I grow up!
Bring up Agustin Ramirez to take his place, then release the dogs on Rizzo. Or the bees. Or the dogs with bees in their mouth and when they bark they shoot bees at you.
Ben Rice.
I don’t know why people aren’t saying Brandon Belt. He was really good last year, and he is available right now!
He was ok to good not really good. He’s also a platoon DH at this point. Hard to type up a roster spot in such a player.
It would take Belt a month to be ready. He should have signed a minor league contract with opt outs with a MLB team so he was ready when needed.
Ben Rice come on down!
I posted Agustin Ramirez before because he was on the 40. But, I would like to see Rice get a shot.
When one door closes another one opens. I hope they give Rice a chance. All indications are the bat is quite real and he has the swing for the Stadium.
Rizzo has had a couple of tough years with injuries. Hopefully a full and speedy recovery.
Kind of fond of Rizzo. He had some good years with the Cubs.
Rizzo seems like a nice guy and excellent teammate. But his exit velo, barrel percentage and bat speed are all in the bottom of the league, which all kind of point towards him being done.
I really believe that Rizzo is still suffering from his concussion. He was doing so well before it and there was a precipitous drop off on both sides immediately after the concussion. He has not yet recovered his prior form on either offense or defense. Not even a semblance of a rebound.
Perhaps he is done as a result of that.
His back. It’s his chronic back troubles not the concussion. IMO, that last 2 yr deal was not so much based in Rizzo’s field performance but a ploy by Cashman to keep good buddy Judge from signing with San Fran.
Abreu is waiting.
No thanks! I’d rather they get Brandon Belt out of forced retirement. Better still is to give the kid Rice a shot.
Be better off with 84-year old Danny Cater.
THAT is funny.. Had to look up and see if the investi-i-Cater was still alive, hadn’t thought about him in years.
NYY want compensation for Bernandino tossing asside Rhizzo? i say they should gift them Dominic Smith for zilcho.. What’s fair is only fair.. NY way, right?
The Lyle-for-Cater deal was bad mainly because the Red Sox never really utilized Lyle properly. Once he got to New York, they made him the closer. Period. The Sox, going back to Dick Williams, threw him in anywhere. Plus, Boston didn’t like his ‘attitude’.
So is Vogelbach, who, surprisingly was hitting better than Abreu.
When Vogelbach was batting 5th this year, he had a .345 BA, .552 SLG, and a .958 OPS.
Ben Rice!
That’s Uncle Ben Rice to you!
I thought it was racist to say “Uncle Ben”?! Isn’t the correct term now just “Ben’s Original”?
My humblest apologies….. Ben’s Rice Original it is!
They should move Judge to 1B on a trial basis and call up the Martian. If Judge takes well to 1B, then the question for next year is answered. If he doesn’t, then they can consider other options. They can afford to live the the defensive growing pains for 4-6 weeks.
Dominguez went on the minor league IL yesterday…
Dominguez just went on the minor league IL over the weekend and could be looking at a month or so on the shelf. At this point, he’s not seeing the big league until September
Dominguez is out with an oblique. I do agree Judges future may include 1st. I don’t see it until 2026 when and if Spencer Jones is ready. Judge can also take DH from Stanton. They’ll cut him at some point beyond 25 since the Marlins subsidy will have kicked in then.
$40 million/year 1b when the guy can play outfield well? Why not just make Sloth (Stanton) play 1b and so he can contribute?
Why would you move Judge and not Soto if the Martian weren’t on the IL?
So move the leading league MVP candidate off a premium defensive position to the least demanding one without any offseason and ST practice?
Yeah it’s probably not the best time to move him especially since he’s never played any IF at the MLB level.
Phillies should offer them Nick Castellanos right now. Cash deal and a player to be named later.
Os fans are bummed that he won’t be in the lineup this week. Especially w 2 lefties starting
I’d love for Ben Rice or TJ Rumfield to get a look at 1B but I wouldn’t be surprised if the initial move is to call up Peraza to play 3B while DJ gets the majority of time at 1B
Ill bet you my life Peraza not getting a callup over Rice. Peraza cant hit AAA pitching sonimagine DJ and Persza batting 8 and 9th in that lineup? You maycas well forfeit the games!!
Peraza is already on the 40 man and Rice is not. Rice has also only been at AAA for two weeks. Peraza might get the initial look in the big leagues while Rice gets a little more time at AAA. If Peraza struggles then the Yankees could clear a 40 man spot for Rice
They have an open spot.
Ideally, the Yankees swing a trade for both reliever Scott and 1b Bell from the Marlins. You have a few minor leaguers mentioned in prior comments, but Garrett Cooper or Vogelbach might be interesting choices as well.
Vogelbach is one of the only hitters in the league worse than Rizzo this year.
True, but Vogelbach got limited sporadic at-bats with Toronto and he was hitting in that anemic ineffectual Jays offense.
HItting in the Yankees lineup and with that short porch in Yankee Stadium, Vogey could end up being serviceable, at least for a little while.
That’s why I listed him. If you take a look at his spray chart, a lot of those fly balls would have been HR’s if he were a Yankee.
They’re going to sign Vogelbach, and he’s going to come in and go off exactly like Matt Carpenter did for them in 2022! That run that Carpenter had for them was ridiculous. In 47-games that year Carp hit .305/.412/.727 an OPS of 1.138 and OPS+216! Then he broke his foot and came back in the post-season and I think he K’d in just about every AB he had. That magical run he had for them in 2022 extended his career another 2+more season’s and most importantly got him paid another $15-$20 more million. Vogelbach would immediately become a folk hero for all us NYY fans. I mean just imagine the Babe 2.0 coming back to the house that he built and starts dropping bombs over the LF porch! Vogey, Vogey, Vogey!!
the food concession stands are in favor of this move.
Like an unexpected Christmas bonus.
Sorry to hear about Rizzo, a genuinely good guy. Sooo, what do you think they’ll give us for Torkelson???
Yankees prospects are far too valuable to trade 😉
Jorbit Vivas looked good last year. Get him, Wells and Peraza. Send Tork back the other way, throw in Urshela, the Tigers catcher Carson Kelly to back up Trevino and some young pitching. Tork hit 30 HRs last year but people act like he has no value.
Rizz is a good guy, but at this point in their careers…..Ben Rice may be a solid upgrade.
I’d also like to see Caleb Durbin at 2B before the year is over.
Huge problem With Cabrera & Dj playing regular !!!!
Bring back Mike Ford for the league minimum. Have a Steve Balboni 2.0 in the lineup.
Right Now, I would take the Mets in a 7 gamer vs the Yankees. Most underrated team in mlb
That’s really dumb MagaSteve
That actually sounds nuts.
At first.
But then I get to thinking about it and it’s not that farfetched.
If you can make that same statement in, say August?
You might just be right.
I like Rizzo personally, but lets be honest-hes been a shell of himself since the concussion. Plays very gingerly.
This will only intensify rumors of Alonso, Vladdy, and others to ride out 2024. Be prepared for daily “trade rumor” articles.
Simple solution: make a reasonable offer to the Giants for Chapman. The NYYs can take on the ridulous money. And, if the Giants want to employ the old “chained to a corpse strategy”, offer to take on Snell’s money too. Chapman will Hoover everything at 3B, DJ goes back to 1B/filler inner on the right side and Cabrera goes back to Super Sub. I’d offer em any two of the Yanks top 10 not named Jones or The Martian.
I see the logic in taking Chapman but why take Snell too? Assuming Schmidt comes back healthy in August, you’ll have Cole, Rodon, Nestor, Stroman, Gil, Poteet, and Schmidt plus Snell. That’s not the best use of resources.
YBC
Because Snell is better than most of those guys
That said, it’s almost certainly not happening
Snell hot trash this year
BJ
Ahh…the insightful thoughts of the MLBTR comment section
“The NYYs can take on the ridulous (sic) money”
Uhh, the NYY aren’t paying Chapman $36M a year. and certainly not $64M for Snell.
For the same reasons they didn’t sign either of those guys in the first place when they were free. The luxury tax doesn’t just disappear over the course of a season.
Thanks for leading with a spelling correction. Really helps to make your otherwise vacuous, insipid point. But, then again, you are the Poison Pen aren’t you?
Vapid is thinking the Yankees are going to pay 2X salaries on someone elses mistake because of luxury tax.
Who will come back first in the bone healing race, Riz or Betts?
Time to call up Ben Rice. Rizzo unfortunately days were numbered in NY. I’m not trading two top prospects for Chapman. Alonso maybe not Chapman
Rizzo may have played his last game with Yankees
Time to move on from Rizzo…….get Judge out of CF before he sustains an injury defensively…..move him to first…
I think there are too many options to consider internally for first before trading top prospects. Rizzo only being out 8 weeks makes it seem as though he will certainly be back. I don’t see the Yankees disrupting the clubhouse by cutting such an important person to them. Plus they tend to treat veterans, even poor performers, really well.
Rizzo hasn’t looked right all year, either hitting or fielding. Lingering effects from last years concussion? This certainly isn’t going to help. Not sure Yanks can count on any type of comeback later this year. Next man up…
Right on time for the Rizzo injury. Next up: Mr. Stanton
Rizzo is washed / probably helps the yankees
@Rocky. Great idea but will never happen. Yankees better not play him all year in CF. Time for a change at both corners. I’ve said all off season long. Rizzo, DJL, and Torres should of been gone. Torres needs to be gone at the deadline before you get nothing for him
A NCAA team experimented with a longer 1b bag, towards the 2nd base side, like a sIde of 1st base the fielders would go to. It might help avoid collision but would give fielders unfair advantage in closer to the bag fielding.
Just seeing Rizzo made me think of a topic me and a friend discussed the other day. Is it possible the 2016 Cubs don’t have a single HOFer? Lester seems the most probable but I don’t think he’s a lock
I think Lester has a shot. For a twelve year stretch he averaged 32 starts, 199 innings, 15 wins. Plus, he was tremendous in the postseason. Identical winning percentage and ERA for Boston and Chicago, so he had success in both leagues. Now, about his hitting … he improved that incredibly well. Now, about his holding runners on base … not so much.
Jose Abreu ? Was released, maybe a change of scenery
I just flagged your post for that suggestion
The orioles are down their 2, 4, and 5 sps – the latter two for the season – plus the best closer in baseball and possibly their best set up man. I think the Yankees minor injuries to minor players isn’t likely to hurt their chances at fending off the Orioles devastated roster.
I forgot about Kremer. So 2, 4, 5, and 6. Yuck
And Baltimore comes into Yankee Stadium and humiliates us.
Luke Voit. He’s healthy. Currently 15 HR 38 RBI in 42 games in Mexico
