The Yankees announced that outfielder Taylor Trammell has been designated for assignment. The move opens up a 26-man roster spot for utilityman Jon Berti, who has been activated from the 10-day injured list after missing the last three weeks due to a groin strain.
In a little more than five weeks’ time, Trammell has been DFA’ed by three different organizations. The Mariners designated Trammell just prior to Opening Day, and the Dodgers claimed the outfielder off waivers a few days later. Los Angeles then returned Trammell to DFA limbo in mid-April, and Trammell found himself quickly on the move once more when the Yankees placed a claim.
Trammell is out of minor league options, hence the whirlwind of transactions as teams have had to try and sneak him through waivers in order to officially outright him off the 40-man roster. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see Trammell claimed again if yet another club has need for some outfield depth, so he could soon add a fourth team to his 2024 resume.
Over five games apiece with the Dodgers and Yankees, Trammell has only eight plate appearances. (He had a walk and a hit in his two PA with New York, giving him one of the few perfect batting lines in Yankees franchise history.) Trammell has hit only .167/.270/.363 over 359 career MLB plate appearances, which has dimmed his star after several years as a top-100 ranked prospect during his time in the minors.
The dreaded “Quad-A” label could apply here since Trammell has continued to rake at Triple-A, but between his speed and ability to play all three outfield positions, Trammell has still managed to attract attention for roster spots. His past blue-chip prospect status has also undoubtedly helped, as some teams might think Trammell could still have a post-hype breakout in him at age 26.

Wow
Yankee Clipper
But he’s got a .143 BA…. That’s like middle of the order for us right now!
Joe says...
But he’s being replaced by Berti’s .211 BA. That’s top of the order.
Yankee Clipper
Haha!! So true…
Joe, you think Judge is still hurt from ST?
LordD99
Yes.
Joe says...
There’s something definitely wrong with Judge. He needs a couple of days to rest at least.

He’s going to compete with Billy Ray ‘RoJo’ Johnson with most teams played with in a season.

Angels pick him up next

Is Taylor a distant relative of Tiger great Alan Trammell?
teddyj
Doubtful, unless very , very distant
deepseamonster32
It doesn’t look like they are
wayneroo
Maybe from the other side of the family.

Lol
sergefunction
Is this a serious question? I doubt it.
It is obviously impossible for those two men to be related. Anyone can see why.
Alan is TRAM-mull.
Taylor is truh-MELL
Baseball77
They are both related to Bubba.

Taylor Trammell, you, are a Seattle Mariner(until Canzone is back probably)

Surprised it wasn’t Jones but not a big deal. This leaves the team with only 1 backup outfielder and 1 big man playing center who should be rested as much as possible.

Joe, you’re absolutely right about berti’s .211 avg being top of the order worthy. Lol. The Yanks offense has been putrid(aside from the 2-games in Milwaukee)for awhile now. So it’s nice to see Berti return, mainly for the simple fact that it gives them at least 1-decent option off the bench. The “lack of hitting” has been contagious this season, and not having ANYONE on the bench worthy of putting in the LU a couple games a week to give a guy a breather has been killer IMO. The offense seems to love and die by Judge so far this season, meaning in games where Judge has actually been able to hit the ball and do damage the rest of the guy’s/LU seems to do the same. Unfortunately however, in the games when Judge hasn’t done much at the plate the offense has been non-existent. And with Judge hoovering around .190-.200 most of the season so far, the lack of offense seems to be a nightly occurrence. I said this after the TOR series, that Boone should switch Soto and Judge in the order to try and get Judge going at the plate. But I’m sure he’s been hesitant on doing that bc the only other guy’s who have been consistently hitting this year are Duggie and Rizzo, and they’re both LH like Soto. So it makes it tough to set a line up when they refuse to have Lefties hitting back to back. Hopefully, Judge will get back on track and start heating up soon bc that will fix most of the offensive issues this team has had.

But Yankee fans said he was the next Mike Ford/ Luke Voit
YankeesBleacherCreature
There was zero hype for Voit and Ford when they made their first appearances so you would be right about Trammel.
DonOsbourne
The Cardinals should grab him. We could use the depth in the minors.
larkraxm
That is the problem with Trammel. He is out of options. If he goes unclaimed, lots of teams would love his depth in the minors, including the Yankees! Once claimed, he has to be on the big club or once again available for other teams to claim.

One of the outright nicest dudes in the sport. I know that doesn’t count for much in terms of making a team, but it definitely made me a fan for life no matter where he ends up. Also, my million-dollar idea is to start an independent AAAA league and stuff it with guys like him.
