As the 2024 regular season continues, here are three things we’ll be keeping an eye on around the baseball world throughout the day today:
1. Hoskins to undergo MRI:
Brewers first baseman Rhys Hoskins exited yesterday’s game against the Pirates in the second inning after tweaking his right hamstring. As noted by Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the slugger will undergo an MRI today to determine the severity of the issue. Even a brief absence for Hoskins would be a brutal blow for the Brewers, as the 31-year-old has been among their top power hitters since signing a two-year deal with the club this past offseason. In 38 games as a Brewer, Hoskins has slashed .233/.340/.474 with nine homers. Gary Sanchez and Jake Bauers could be among the club’s options to handle first base if Hoskins ends up requiring time off. Sanchez has of course been a catcher for the bulk of his career but has already made four appearances at first base this season.
2. Lowe to visit specialist:
Rays second baseman Brandon Lowe has been on the shelf for over a month now due to a grade 1 oblique strain. In recent days, he’s begun a rehab assignment at the Triple-A level with solid results to show for it, slashing .300/.462/1.000 in four games. However, manager Kevin Cash revealed yesterday that Lowe “felt something” in his oblique over the weekend and is expected to see a specialist today to determine next steps (X link via Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times). Richie Palacios and Amed Rosario have split time at the keystone in recent weeks while Lowe is unavailable.
3. MLBTR Chat today:
The 2024 season is now in full swing, and trade season has begun to get underway as the likes of Luis Arraez, Robbie Grossman and Luis Guillorme have already changed clubs. If you have questions regarding your favorite club’s start to the campaign, or perhaps questions that look ahead to this summer’s trade deadline and the 2024-25 offseason, MLBTR’s Steve Adams will host a live chat with readers today at 1pm CT. You can click here to ask a question in advance, and that same link will allow you to join in on the chat once it begins or read the transcript after it is completed.

1. The utilization of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for Brewers first baseman Rhys Hoskins following a hamstring injury represents a critical juncture in modern sports medicine. This event necessitates a detailed analysis of radiological findings, clinical assessments, and subsequent treatment modalities. Such investigations contribute significantly to the scientific discourse on injury diagnosis and prognostication in elite athletes.
2. The decision by Rays second baseman Brandon Lowe to seek consultation with a specialist for a grade 1 oblique strain underscores the nuanced approach required in injury rehabilitation protocols. An in-depth examination of specialized interventions, including advanced imaging techniques and targeted therapeutic interventions, offers valuable insights into personalized care strategies for athletic injuries.

Are you a Medical professional or just well read. I like your comments!

Oblique injury. Just wasn’t a thing back in the day. Seem to recall it started showing up on team injury reports in the 1990s.
Coincidentally, through media coverage, rampant steroid (PEDs) use was being revealed then as well. Which begs the question. Is getting bigger and stronger through supplement ingestion, whether legal or illegal, a main culprit here?

The former Dodgers athletic trainer Stan Conte’s theory is this:

Thanks for the quick get back.
Seems the article suggests these injuries happen because of exercise/training activity alone. Exercise alone doesn’t help a hitter get huge, it’s in combination with the right diet that helps him get big and stay big.
IMO, without a proper diet to complement intense training the body will stop maintaining bigness. Unfortunately, other parts of the body, like an oblique, are not designed for this lifestyle and breakdown. So, back to my question. Does the supplement ingestion part of a diet to get bigger whether legal or illegal, enhance the likelihood of an oblique injury.

Took a while to read. Have they, MLB, implemented any of these suggestions?

What’s Hoskins next deal going to look like when he opts out?
Trojan Toss
8 years, $320 million.

I’d say you’re 100M too high, unless we see a big surge. He was just finding some success after a pretty cold start.
Stormintazz
More than the Brewers can afford. They should move him at the deadline.
UWPSUPERFAN77
Maybe ,if healthy?
LordD99
Similar to Brandon Belt’s 2024 deal.
pmollan
All depends on his season, no? It’s a $18MM option so he basically just has to stay healthy to get 3+ years from someone
solaris602
Needs to get that BA up at least 30 clicks to really be thinking about opting out. There will be a market, but few teams who are willing to pay significantly more than he’s getting now. Pirates are perennial 1B needy especially after hitting on a (predictable) clunker in Rowdy Tellez, but they got what they paid for. Mets would be a solid possibility if they trade Alonso and/or don’t re-sign him.

Nothing on the first-place, best-record-in-baseball Phillies winning multiple games (including a wild come-from-behind win in Flushing last night) with Turner, Schwarber and Realmuto all out for multiple games at the same time due to injuries? Seems like the best team in the league winning games without many of their best players is newsworthy.
Tigers3232
@AT Individual game recaps and results are not newsworthy here. 13 different teams won games yesterday and there are stories on none of them.
The topics here are in regards to roster moves, potential roster moves, and speculation of such.
AToweringFlyBall
As I said, the Phillies have been playing without some of their best players, who have been hurt, which has forced some creative lineups. The fact that it’s the best team in baseball doing this should be newsworthy. If the Yankees or Dodgers were playing the same way and winning, guarantee there would be detailed articles about it. Rhys Hoskins had an MRI last night, a pretty regular occurrence, and he hasn’t even missed a game, yet it was reported on. Schwarber was removed from the lineup three games ago (similar to Hoskins), didn’t play in multiple games, and yet, bubkis. Is MLBTR in the business of reporting baseball news or not? Because it seems the only thing they’re consistently good at is royally screwing up free agent predictions.
YankeesBleacherCreature
Both the Yankees and Dodgers have been winning. I havent seen anything lately about the NYY except injury/rehab updates about Cole and DJL and DFAs of fringe players. If you’re looking for content which isn’t MLBTR’s niche, go elsewhere. Predictions are just that. Nobody holds a crystal ball.

The site advertises itself as a group of “experts.” One would think a group of experts on a subject matter wouldn’t be so wrong by such a wide margin.
My point though, which I suspect you and others understand, is that the Phillies are playing undermanned baseball and are still the best time in the league. They won again today. This site reports on all types of baseball related news, despite the word “rumors” in its name, and it just strikes me as inherently weird that zero ink is spilled about the best team in the sport.

Drop it. You have no concept of what “The Opener” is.
Go read Phillies blogs and be happy about your team…. so far.

Weird reply. The Opener is about yesterday’s baseball news, right?

In addition to checking on Lowes, see if Home Depot is okay too.
