Former Angels infielder David Fletcher placed bets with the illegal Southern California gambling ring operated by Mathew Bowyer, according to a report from ESPN’s Tisha Thompson. That’s the same bookmaker with whom Shohei Ohtani’s former interpreter Ippei Mizuhara placed bets. According to ESPN, Fletcher did not place any bets on baseball.
Thompson writes that Fletcher placed bets on multiple other sports. MLB players are allowed to gamble on sports other than baseball, though they’re obviously not permitted to participate in an illegal operation. Thompson writes that MLB has not previously opened an investigation into Fletcher’s gambling activities but is now likely to do so.
According to ESPN, former minor league infielder Colby Schultz also participated in the gambling ring. Thompson writes that Schultz, whom the report describes as a “close friend” of Fletcher’s, did bet on baseball — including on Angel games while Fletcher was on the team. There is no indication that Fletcher did not perform to the best of his abilities while with the Angels.
Bowyer’s bookmaking ring was thrust into the national spotlight in March, when it was first reported that Mizuhara had wired significant sums of money to pay off debts. Ohtani stated that he was unaware of Mizuhara’s activities. A criminal investigation supported that claim, with investigators determining that Mizuhara had stolen upwards of $16MM from the two-time MVP. Mizuhara pled guilty to bank fraud and filing a false tax return last week. He is awaiting sentencing and is expected to serve multiple years in federal prison.
Fletcher played for the Angels between 2018-23, overlapping with Ohtani and Mizuhara for six years. The Halos traded him to the Braves in an offseason salary dump. Fletcher has appeared in five games for Atlanta this season. He was outrighted off the 40-man roster in April and is with their Triple-A team in Gwinnett.
Which means Shohei is guilty
tigers182: I don’t know how this has anything to do with Ohtani but even if it did, the league investigation would have gone in Ohtani’s favor since Manfred would do anything to avoid losing the league’s meal ticket.
No, it doesn’t.
They should reinstate Pete Rose come on now
Pete rose the pedophile?
Johnny,
NEVER. Permanently ineligible. He bet on games he was involved in. “But he always bet to win.” So what did that say about games he didn’t bet on?
Hall of Fame, Pete Rose
Pete Rose will be inducted to the Hall of Fame shortly after his passing
Take that to the bank
You’re probably right. He may as well video his acceptance speech, if he hasn’t already.
Johnny…it seem like many people you believe Rose’s ban to be lifetime….it is not….it is permanent ineligibility. It does not end with his death.
“Shohei is guilty”…So when other people bet and/or commit crimes Shohei should stand accused? If you don’t believe all the 3 letter Federal agencies that found Shohei to have no culpability, you most likely won’t believe any rational argument whatsoever. You probably believe that MLB bullied and strong armed the U.S government into finding that Ohtani committed no crimes.
There are millions of dollars at stake. It would not be a surprise that the all mighty government performed a manipulated investigation. I don’t even know what I think about all of this, but to blindly trust the government is foolish. I don’t think this fletcher news adds anything, but to just act like you’re smarter than everyone because you believe everything you hear isn’t the way to be either. The whole thing is sad to see regardless of who’s guilty
Why would the government protect someone that’s not even a US citizen? Do you guys think before you type?
Because he and the Dodgers are good for the American economy… Do you?
The Dodgers would have 3.5-4 million fans a yr come through Dodger Stadium with or without Ohtani
@fred-3. Do you believe the government is 100% honest? If you say yes, the conversation ends hear because you are the one who doesn’t think. If no, why do you have an issue with someone merely suggesting that there could be something fishy?
@2012orioles: In case you can’t HEAR, a conversation would end HERE.
@blue baron nice
“There are millions of dollars at stake…manipulated investigation”…..Exactly. Do get back to us when there are BILLIONS of dollars in play. It would take the BILLIONS of a Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates or Elon Musk to even come close to “manipulating” an investigation of the many investigative agencies of the Dept. of Homeland Security. Ohtani has a lot of money, but he doesn’t have the money it would take to pay off the dozens of agencies of Homeland Security.
There’s a red under your bed. And a little yellow man in your head.
Crikey, we got a deep state true believer in our sanctum.

Why would the government protect someone that’s not even a US citizen? Do you guys think before you type?
=========================
They’re protecting baseball, not Ohtani.
Do you think before you type?
That’s why Chuck Norris sleeps in Shohei pajamas
Come on now, Pete Rose
If Shohei has that kind of power, he should be the president of the US and Prime Minister of Japan
Somehow, if Donald Trump is elected as president, I could see Shohei Ohtani Prime Minister to Japan
In order Ohtani be a president of United States he would have to be a born citizen, but could see him being Prime Minister of Japan
Believing anything coming from our 3 letter agencies these days is hard to do.
Really mate? how do you feel about Putin comrade?
CleaverGreene: How do you feel about Joe McCarthy’s shenanigans and red-baiting paranoia?
It means David Fletcher’s character is as pathetic as his hit tool
@Manny: Perhaps he is a tool at that.
His hit tool is literally his only average-plus tool! Not only does your joke suck, it’s poorly researched as well
@raregokus: It’s a joke and doesn’t call for research. Lighten up.
Your brain is broken.
Didn’t the Feds clear Ohtani?
Investigated himself and cleared himself of any wrongdoing.
tiger,
Which means your “logic” is flawed. Severely.
Ohtani now can no longer say “Mookie Betts”
If Ohtani was a gambler why didn’t he sign with a team in a state where gambling is legal?

Ohtani
Read Mizuhara’s indictment and guilty plea (I did). It makes it crystal clear that Ohtani had no idea what was going on.
Wuh-oh.
…and so it begins
Human nature…
The term gambling ring, not the best look.
I’d go for a gambling square myself.
Or perhaps a gambling necklace?… maybe a gambling gold chain?
…a gambling broach?
I think nose ring is a worse look.
Give Pete Rose a second chance
Pete Rose 4,560 hits come on elective board members of the Hall of Fame what are you waiting for his Passing
Any real gambler knows that the ideal shape is a rhombus.
…and these are just the people that get caught..
Anywhere there is money, there is always corruption.
So everyone is corrupt.
It’s why in my view, sports and even legalized gambling should not be married together. Eventually, there will be a class action suit from “losers” claiming games were fixed or simply unfair. I learned years ago from my mentor that a conflict actually begins with someone else’s perception.
@dewey: You needed someone else to tell you that?
Perception is always reality.
Except Putin.
CleaverGreene: How’s your theory of the vast Communist lefty conspiracy coming along?
Honest question.
What are the odds Ohtani had no idea this was going on?
I mean, Michael Jordan was a gambling addict during his playing days. He played baseball because David Stern told him to go away for a bit and let the gambling stuff blow over. The story about his dad always wanting him to play baseball sounds sus, at best.
Was?…usually once you are an addict you are always an addict..just sometimes able to better control the addiction than others…and on ohtani we will never know the truth but i will say not good
Well 2183281, you can look at known facts and decide
“From the moment Ohtani landed in the U.S. with Mizuhara in tow, Mizuhara was his financial point person. In 2018 — likely during spring training, given that the pair were in Arizona — Mizuhara allegedly joined Ohtani at a bank branch and translated for him as Ohtani set up an account.”
“That was reportedly the account in which Ohtani’s salary from the Angels was deposited (Ohtani received $42,269,259 from the Angels during his tenure) and over which Mizuhara asserted total control.”
“Bank records reportedly show that the account was in Ohtani’s name, but the contact information connected to it was changed to Mizuhara’s phone number and an anonymous email address connected to Mizuhara. Transfers were allegedly made from the account using devices and IP addresses associated with Mizuhara.”
“Mizuhara allegedly went as far as pretending to be Ohtani when speaking with bank employees, according to calls recorded by the bank”
“Let’s say you are a baseball agent who has a client who will someday sign a contract worth $700 million. Let’s say that client doesn’t speak English fluently and needs an interpreter to navigate life in the U.S. Let’s say that interpreter becomes the player’s de facto manager. Let’s say that interpreter tells you your client has a “private” bank account that not even the financial managers you hired can access.”
“At what point would you start using a different interpreter to verify this information? If your answer is sometime before or during that final point, congratulations. You are more communicative than CAA’s Nez Balelo was with Ohtani.”
“The complaint bears that out, with Balelo telling investigators that he does not employ any individuals who speak Japanese but will occasionally hire his own interpreters to communicate with clients. In Ohtani’s case, however, Balelo used only Mizuhara because he was always with Ohtani.
It appears that in their years-long history, Balelo has never actually talked to Ohtani without using Mizuhara as a go-between.”
Copy/paste any of that to find source material. The answers to your questions are on line and not hard to find… even the 37 page complaint against Miz is online.
Cat, Cat, Cat… everything is always a conspiracy. It makes people feel better about themselves to believe in conspiracies even when there is overwhelming evidence against them.
It’s simpler than that. It’s usually them being too dumb to understand a complex situation. Conspiracy theories are simple & easy.
Smacky, “being too dumb to understand a complex situation”… Sorta like that statement?????
Most complex situations require a bit of explaining or thinking… Hence them being COMPLEX.
brick………………….
10% +/- in the US believe in a flat earth
10% +/- in the US believe in chemtrails
10% +/- in the US believe the moon landings were fake
it’s a sad state of affairs..
@Cat Mando: And a shockingly larger number believe in the absence of any evidence Trump’s lies about the 2020 election having been rigged/stolen.
You believe whatever the tv says I see.
TurnOffTheTV: No, I don’t believe what Trump said on TV about the election.
But it’s shocking how many people do.
InfoWars!!
If that means 30% believe in one of three we’re in trouble.
Blue: show me an honest politician LoL they’re all just as bad as the orange clown
More liberals than conservatives are truthers. Liberals think that black men are being killed by the thousands by police yearly. I thought you believed in science
@cat
7 states are having discussions on banning chemtrails
Tennessee has outright banned the flights
look up in the sky, you only have to open your eyes
@blue
did cnn tell you that?
@ blue
does this mean you are voting for sleepy joe? Serious question: educate me on three things he has done to make America better?
tuna411…..eyes have nothing to do with it and not one f these “bans” says chemtrails are real….the bans say they can’t do what the simpletons think is actually happening.
Do you seriously believe the gov’t has enlisted thousands and thousands of airline employees to secretly add dispersal mechanisms to commercial airlines and spay poisons, mind-control elements or some top-secret chemical that can alter weather? Really? Really? That is moon landing denier level.. Forget the eyes. use your brain.
BTW…..condensation trails, the long, thin lines of cloud that form behind aircraft, are created when water vapor from the engine’s exhaust condenses and freezes in the cold air at high altitudes. That is science. Chemtrails are the “invention” of a few to suck in the gullible.
@tuna411: I don’t watch CNN or any other TV news outlet.
@tuna411: Only three things? Here’s 57.
1. He beat Trump and got him out of office.
2. He beat Trump and got him out of office.
3. He beat Trump and got him out of office.
4-56. He beat Trump and got him out of office.
57. He drives Trump supporters, Fox News, and OAN so far up the wall that they fabricated the BS narrative of him being senile and incompetent and the economy being terrible to make Trump look good when none of it is true.
“Sleepy Joe.” Who told you to call him that, Fox News or OAN?
Well over 40% helped a Florida resident pull off the biggest con job in American history and are inclined to get suckered again, after all.
@blue
I’m a polite person. I could’ve wrote “pedo” joe, “child sniffer” joe, “trippy” joe, “corrupt” joe but I go with sleepy joe
nice of you to provide zero examples of how sleepy joe has made America better.
it certainly isn’t the economy
it certainly isn’t the border
it certainly isn’t the oil and gas industry
it certainly isn’t employment
it certainly isn’t protecting America
all your answers have to do with President Trump, which proves your TDS is non-recoverable. You’d rather America become a communist dicktatorship under the communist dem party than a free America
You are exactly what is wrong with the world today. Have the day you deserve.
“Liberals think that black”…More blacks are killed by liberal policies than by the Police. Whose policies are the ones that imprison and abort millions upon millions of black people?
Great summation of the actual events!
You’re trying to bring water to the desert educating the average mlbtr dingus
I’m starting to suspect that a lot of MLB fans believe Ohtani is really Chinese.
Excuse me, but don’t banks also have translators who deal directly with clients? Who can identify inconsistencies between oral and written communications? There appears to be a breakdown of due diligence here, and signs of a much deeper, longer running scam…
Honest question = loaded question.
Every single time…
Anyone who thinks Ohtani didn’t know what was going on is pretty naive given the amount of money involved. You don’t just move that kind of scratch around willy nilly with today’s banking regulations.
Well, you could go on speculating and assuming you know best or……you could turn to facts like……oh…….like this plea agreement. there is even more info online that kicks sand in the face of your assumptions but i’ll let you look for them if you dare.
justice.gov/usao-cdca/media/1351271/dl?inline
“What are the odds Ohtani had no idea”…I’d say the odds are about 99% that Ohtani had no knowledge because a very through, multi 3 letter agency, Federal investigation found that to be the case. Ohtani is an athlete, not some international spy(with political connections)or a billionaire who could potentially pay off investigators. Do you actually think the USA Federal prosecutors would give up another chance to fine someone MILLIONS, seize their properties and add yet another high profile conviction to their personal resumes and careers?

“What are the odds Ohtani had no idea”…I’d say the odds are about 99% that Ohtani had no knowledge
=======================
1-I have no problem with the coverup.
2-Ohtani was almost certainly involved. Maybe I will list the reasons below, but I’ve done it before.
Oh boy. Everybody get in here lol
NAH FREE MY MAN
Dominic is still ok
Fletch is getting the summer off now – without pay…
The most important thing is to make sure these new facts reinforce everyone’s predetermined opinions as to Shohei’s guilt or innocence.
That’s all that really matters.
It’s only illegal because the gubment can’t get their cut.
What a colossally dumb comment.
And why is it dumb?
Because it’s an unfounded conspiracy theory.
Those make for the dumbest comments.
What? How is it a conspiracy theory?
Legalized gambling allows the govt to track money movement, and therefore winnings, so that those winnings can then be taxed. This is what happens today in any state that has legalized gambling.
In “Illegal” gambling, the $$$ is not tracked by the govt, so therefore no taxation occurs.
I’m sure you know this, right? It’s very matter of fact and in no way could any sane person concoct my statement into any sort of conspiracy.
@ Blue Baron – Figured no response from you, because well, there is no argument to be made. Looking at your commenting/posting history though, seems you’re easily triggered by anything that involves praise for DJT and criticism for anything the current administration has or hasn’t done. That explains a lot.
Bro can’t hit a parlay or a breaking ball
Phew, Perry did one good thing!
I guarantee trout has bet against his team
I don’t see what this has to do with Ohtani at all.
This was a very predictable situation. There are reasons why for years and years sports betting was illegal. We didn’t just suddenly get smarter as a society.
Perhaps athletes should not be allowed to bet on any sports, their own sport or anyone else’s. Seems like a small sacrifice for the privilege of being a pro athlete.
I mean, it could have to do with Ohtani, obviously, but the reason you would assume as much is you’re a conspiracy theorist looking for Ohtani to be guilty. Neither the league nor the Feds are conspiring to cover up an Ohtani gambling story.
I could see numerous reasons why you would believe he’s guilty. The main one being you are an angry fan who is mad Ohtani didn’t sign with your team and signed with the Dodgers. My guess is that’s where all this is coming from. Angry little fans.
When you have no other logical argument, just say they are jealous. That’s the easiest way to spot someone who is an illogical simpleton. “Your guess” is useless.
Where is the logic in thinking Ohtani is a gambler and would risk his career for it? That seems insanely stupid to believe he would do that. I can’t believe anyone who is capable of rational and logical thought would believe that.
Thank God Ohtani knew nothing about it and he didn’t place any bets with a bookmaker right. Manfred did an “extensive investigation”, you know one of those deep investigations where you know the outcome before it was even started. Was it started?
“Thank God Ohtani knew nothing..Manfred did an extensive investigation”….You’re ignorance and apparent bias is showing; Ohtani wasn’t investigated by MLB, which is not an investigative agency and has no statutory, investigation or supoena authority. The matter was investigated and ajudicated under the Dept of Homeland Security and every important, 3 letter investigative authority/agency in the United States.
Federal investigators, who have nothing to gain from protecting Ohtani, found he was not involved.
Good lord! Can’t fix stupid!
Does this news make my Fletcher bobble head more valuable or less valuable?
I wouldn’t bet on cashing in on it.
Is the bubbahead made of glass
So now let’s make Fletcher the scapegoat as well as Ippei so MLB can keep the superstar Ohtani Rose.
So now let’s mute MFF so we can keep the comments section clear of one fewer conspiracy theorist.
Guessing Fletcher’s time with the Atlanta organization will soon be coming to an end.
“Soon be coming to an end”…I’m guessing Fletcher’s time with organized, professional baseball “will soon be coming to an end”.
Yeah i imagine it might be. Assuming he knew it was an illegal gambling ring he’s toast. And I imagine he did. Maybe he didn’t but I imagine he did.
The bookie is same the dude that Yasel Puig was using when he was a Dodger. There’s a “Real Houswives Of Wherever” connection to. Heard that but I have zero idea who any of those people are.
The Angels are in California we can’t even use FanDuel or DraftKings b/c the Indian Casinos want to continue their get rich gambling monopoly.
It’s about time that they get back at the white man. Kemosabe.
The same is true in Nevada. We don’t even have the lottery.
@mlb fan: He can have a catch with Trevor Bauer and Wander Franco, lol.
“Trevor Bauer and Wander”..Yup.
The Angels made a bet on Fletcher and lost millions.
The team must have known something.
It’s the Angels. One of their clubbies or physical therapists was selling Tyler Skaggs opioid pills that killed him.
@aragon they did say angels knew about ippei, most likely why they were burying fletcher in the minors and traded him.
That’s what, I think, happened.
Well, boys and girls. What’s we’ve learnt from MLB is that you can have a bad character and be abusive to others, even drive drunk and spend some time in jail and they’ll bring you back on the team but best not do something consentual with a partner and definitely don’t bet on sports.
Who has been to jail?
@Hotdog 2
Marcell Ozuna
I don’t understand how you guys shill for Trevor Bauer as if he’s not a crappy person who everyone hated before the weird sex stuff.
fake news.. And lol at “shill” for wanting a guy to get another chance after 3 years
I don’t understand how you guys shill for bad actors that currently exist in the MLB, despite doing worse things than Bauer.
But… but… I don’t like Bauer.
I’d have more respect for you anti-Bauers if we banned all the other bad actors currently playing and making millions.
That’s the thing you guys refuse to accept. He’s not banned. No team wants him because of his past actions and behavior. He’s served his MLB suspension. Actions and speech are free, consequences from actions and speech aren’t.
@Smacky
I know he’s not banned but there are actually players currently in the league who did worse things and were given a second and third chance. Why should these bad characters be in the league in the first place? If the issue with Bauer is his personal decisions, then you should be in support of getting rid of the other bad actors currently playing.
I have no horse in the Bauer situation and could not care less if he plays. My problem with MLB is that they still allow bad characters in the league while shills like yourself make false claims about what Bauer did. If you want proper characters in the league that are law abiding, you should be in support of getting rid of some of the other players who did worse things and are still playing.
Wrong again. No team wants him because of the fan “uproar”
@Liberalsteve
What fan uproar? Is there any fan uproar for the current players in the game involved with DA or drunk driving and being in jail?
Like who and who? You’re still missing the point that no teams want to bring Bauer into their clubhouse because he’s a jerk that everybody happens to hate because he’s a jerk. That you feel the need to make him a part of a story that has nothing to do with him so far is kinda weird.
@Smacky
Mookie said some nice things about him. Are you suggesting it wasn’t true?
Nope. Fake news.
@Liberalsteve
Thanks for confirming you’re biased and not here for a serious discussion.
Next!
He is pretty stupid to believe that he isn’t getting signed because he is a jerk. lol
And again you fail to name the players who have “done worse.”
@Smacky: Why not? People are willing to vote for Donald Trump FOR PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES as if he’s not a corrupt, crappy person as well.
People that start wars and drone thousands are great people
He’s a right-wing homeboy, mate. Now do ya get it?
Where’s thelegendaryharambe when you need him?
@Old York
I think the tide is turning with Urias seemingly blackballed now.
but no way would Ohtani have then lol
I just want to meet the bookie who gives that line of credit to someone making $300k a year.
Get a job
Woodhead1986- I have a job and it requires me to use common sense in my everyday life. Why is it you make strange comments all over this post and do not let anyone reply to you?
Manfred just mad he isn’t getting a piece of the action. Here come all of the people that have seen Ohtani’s personal accounts and can say with 100% certainty he did or did not do it.
When baseball made the decision to get in bed with gambling, this kind of stuff was inevitable.
Golf is in bed with gambling. hockey is in bed with gambling. Your theory is wrong
Three wrongs make a right?
Actually, three lefts make a right.
That’s the truth TOBTTR.
Baseball is the one sport that no matter what will punish gambling to the upmost degree. The black sox scandal almost ruined the game.
But I got to be honest the real issue isn’t these players but the umpires you cannot tell me with some of these outrageous and terrible calls that some of these umps aren’t on the take to do some point shaving. And you can’t tell me that out of all the 4 major sports that Tim Donaghy was the only game official to influence games for gamblers. It’s way more wide spread.
At the most obvious end of the spectrum a certain game pitched by Livan Hernandez comes to mind.
@Braves Butt-Head: Baseball will punish gambling to the UTMOST degree as well while they’re about it.
Dude, get a life and possibly a job as an editor. No one cares for your grammatical clarity.
Poppin: I have a life, and I have worked as both a writer and editor.
What’s your excuse?
And speak for yourself if you don’t care. Other people do.
Alllll the superstars getting pinched in this
Which superstars? Name one.
WHO IS THE BEST PITCHER IN MLB NOW?
Maybe it’s Paul Skenes lol
It’s hard to look past Seth Lugo
how can people be so naive ? i’ve been saying since the beginning that ohtani is a degenerate gambler. he got his friend to take the fall, and even his teammates are admitting to placing bets. mlb sweeping this under the rug. this is horsesh*t. complete utter horsesh*t and people are actually dumb enough, gullible enough, uneducated enough, to believe that a silly interpreter somehow convinced bankers time and time again that he was the #1 baseball player in the world, and then somehow stole $17 mil from ohtani without ohtani knowing. every time another layer unravels in this ridiculous insane outrageous story i just throw up in my mouth bec ohtani broke the rules, broke the law, & deserves a lifetime ban. and jail time. and instead its the same as the champion cheater astros. not even a slap on the wrist. manfred’s crapping his pants at the thought of losing face of mlb. there goes the roku deal. and all the intl games in asia. so of course manfraud wont do a damn thing. oh. just threw up my mouth again.
Utah – I agree that it’s hard to believe Ohtani knew nothing but let the Astros thing go…please. It’s a totally different set of circumstanced with zero correlation.
Great now fletcher will be dfa’d tomorrow
I think it’s more like Mizuhara placed bets with David Fletcher’s bookmaker.
I wonder how he got associated with this illegal operation? Maybe Shohei pointed him in the right direction?
Not sure why people can’t just get their dopamine from sex and drugs like the good old days.
But, if hoping the Brewers score 3 in the ninth to cover a parlay is as good for you as those, more power to you, I guess.
Pete Rose is pissed off he couldn’t have an interpreter.
There was a SNL sketch with Dana Carvey and Phil Hartman as Pete Rose and Dana Carvey was Dustin Hoffmans character from Rainman lol
Would that have prevented him from statutory r-ping that teenager? Oh you mean his lying and gambling problems. Just a swell guy to go to bat for, as it were
“There is no indication that Fletcher did not perform to the best of his abilities while with the Angels.” Most of that team didn’t…
1919 Black Sox scandal all over again with Fletcher and the Angels not performing up to those standards 2023
With all those fake injuries players not playing up to their potential how many of those players were on the take?
YOU NOW FAKE NEWS
Ippei Mizuhara Secretly managing the Angels 2023
There is no indication that Fletcher had anything else in the tank. It’s entirely plausible that he really did play up to his abilities, and they just weren’t enough.
While we’re at it, Pete Rose deserves HOF
Thank you
@Skipper Lou
“Pete Rose deserves HOF”
No, he doesn’t. I’d prefer Joe Jackson, but that isn’t going to happen either…
Ty Cobb was a terrible racist too. You think the Babe checked IDs with his girls? Mickey Mantle was a drunk. A lot of ballplayers regularly cheat on their wives on the road. Thats just off the top of my head. If you are looking for model citizens, you are looking in the wrong place, Hall of farmers or not.
The one bedrock rule is “Thou shalt not bet on baseball.” Rose did, so has a lifetime ban.
I’m also in favor of lifetime ban ending at the end of the lifetime, same for Jackson.
Teenage girl enthusiasts HOF maybe
@woodhead
Yes, I didn’t need to go down the Wander Franco route with Pete Rose. I do wonder whether I could open a HO infamy next door in Cooperstown. We could open it with Roger Clemens throwing tomatoes at Pete Rose…
That’s right Clemens had a thing for young ones too.
Roger Clemens headhunter punk
I fail so much to understand why anyone cares about this. The sport is in bed with gambling companies. If he didn’t bet on his team why does it matter? If California is gonna be moral monitors of their citizens then you create the situation for “illegal” gambling. The implication being that draft kings and all these other organizations are so much more respectable just because they are legal most places (despite all the reported cheating that has happened). Just makes MLB look dumb to sponsor gambling so heavily then drop the hammer potentially on guys not even gambling on baseball. If you are gonna get in people’s business then you have to make all gambling off limits to players. Makes no sense that I can be allowed to gamble then be traded to LA and have to stop or do it illegally. Makes no sense to be able to place bets on the road but not at home. It is addictive. But stay outta their business anyway unless they are caught gambling on their team.
I hear what you are saying. I think we need to know more details before we can really know what happened. If it really just came down to doing something that is legal in a different state then that’s not the same as if he simply chose to gamble illegally.
I don’t pretend to understand illegal gambling but I don’t see a big difference. It seems likely to be because he can’t gamble in LA but if he’s gonna gamble who really cares how he did it anyway? What is really the difference besides who gets their cut? Now I could understand it being morally questionable in instances where people are gonna get hurt possibly by shady people but unless you are the one operating it or threatening people I don’t really see what you did morally wrong any more than gambling itself being potentially morally wrong. Is it illegal for me to gamble with my friends over the weekend? Idk but probably. But that’s less shady than draft kings, etc. Illegal gambling seems like gangsters during prohibition. Policing people’s activities creates the shady guys.
Baseball opened the door when they got in bed with gambling. But they only saw the dollar signs like most of American businesses.
They might as well lift Pete Rose’s ban now and let him manage the Vegas team in a couple of years.
A few years back, when the Angels didn’t renew Fletcher, I wondered what happened. He was an above average player and pretty decent 2nd baseman. I suspected he mouthed off to management or got greedy because I couldn’t figure out why no one picked him up. It now makes sense that his gambling with an outlaw bookie got noticed. Of course, this is just speculation.
My 2 cents on Ohtani is that he is completely innocent.
So Fletcher got caught in a big lie by downplaying his relationship w bookie. What’s concerning is Schulz (who is confirmed gambled in baseball and though out if baseball will get a lifetime ban from anything associated w baseball) is described as a Bookie! He worked for the main bookie!
“In the federal complaint against Mizuhara, authorities say Bowyer sent Mizuhara’s wire information to an associate known as “Bookmaker 3.” The sources told ESPN that Schultz is Bookmaker 3.”
And Fletcher is friends with scumbags so why Ohtani and his interpreter became friends with him is really poor judgement or they like gambling and hanging with shady people too.
Fletcher HAS to be a degenerate gambler judging by the company he keeps
Fletcher was a roper for the main bookie it sounds maybe due to his own debts?
What if Fletcher and his associates were working a long con all along to get Ohtani’s money?
David Fletcher is a multi millionaire with a palatial house in Anaheim who has little incentive to risk spending his golden years in Federal lockup. Much more likely is that David Fletcher, like Ohtani’s former interpreter, is an addicted “degenerate gambler”, as Tony Soprano was known to say.
Ohtani. — , Even though He has been educated in basic English In his school years and has now been Spending the vast majority of the past six years in the United States where his Teammates,, Coaches, Fans, countless other individuals within major league baseball As a whole, and Perhaps his bookie Overwhelmingly in all likelihood I have no Knowledge of any Asian languages unless they stunk and had to go play overseas for a few years .
I just can’t understand why this man still uses an interpreter Show some respect for The country’ That Provided you the opportunity to take your career To a level Which only the United States could provide.. Maybe I’m Completely incorrect but In my opinion Still using someone else to speak For you Provides Plausible deniability Which you can use to Protect yourself from any negative issue, such as Millions of dollars and illegal Gambling.
i don’t really the see the issue with gambling. Let the players do it on any sport except their own. The minute you find evidence they have done that, even betting for their own team they get a lifetime ban. Does it really matter if a baseball player has a punt on the NFL?]
The league can’t pretend to be outraged against gambling when every spot takes so much sponsorship/advertising from it. If rich guys wanna blow their money then let them, just not on the sport they play.
Nancy Pelosi
Wait, because someone cheated this must mean the Astros are tied to it! LOL clown Los Karens fans incoming.
1-He needs to obtain all of Ohtani’s credentials.
2-He needs to bypass the bank security systems.
3-He needs to establish a million $ line of credit with a bookie, when the dude might make $200-300k.
4-The indictment says $40M was lost, but only $16M was stolen to cover the $40M. Is there even the tiniest chance that Ippie owes the bookie $24M?
5-Ohtani had to never open up his bank statements for 26 months.
I’d say 1 & 2 are possible, if not a bit far-fetched. If banks could be scammed out of millions remotely, I’d guess that would be happening every day.
On #5, again, possible, but doubtful. Does anyone not open their statements for 26 months, or occasionally go on line to see their balances?
But it is really #3 & #4. The indictments says the bookie is okay with a $1M line of credit, so long as they get a $500k transfer every Monday. The bookie had to be 100% certain that Ippie couldn’t personally make a $500k payment every week. At his salary, he’d be hard put to make a $500k payment once every 4 years.
And what of the missing $24M ($40M lost against $16M embezzled). If Ippie’s take-home salary was $240k, which I doubt, it would take a mere 100 years to repay the bookie $24M.
Follow the money. Shohei generates billions of dollars for MLB. There was a 0.00% chance that he was going to be found guilty, even though it’s highly likely that he was betting.
I am SHOCKED, I tell you…SHOCKED….that there is gambling in this establishment!
And the first e-mail I see when I check is for odds on baseball games…for which MLB gets a cut. As do all sports. Lay down with dogs and wake up with fleas. (I gots lots of cliches.)
Keep Politics out of baseball!
