The Phillies have acquired left-hander Tyler Gilbert from the Reds, reports Matt Gelb of The Athletic on X. Since Gelb uses the word “purchased,” it seems the Reds will receive cash considerations in return. The southpaw wasn’t on the Reds’ 40-man roster and therefore won’t need a roster spot with the Phillies.
Gilbert, 30, signed a minor league deal with the Reds in the offseason. He has made seven appearances, three of them starts, logging 11 2/3 innings. He has an awful earned run average of 13.11 so far, though that’s obviously a tiny sample and there are some other numbers that are more favorable.
The lefty has a massive .545 batting average on balls in play so far and 43.3% strand rate, both of which are unsustainably unlucky. His 20.6% strikeout rate and 9.5% walk rate are close to average and he hasn’t allowed a home run yet this year, so his FIP is actually 2.94 in his brief 2024 showing. Regardless, it seems the Reds are willing to move on take the cash while letting the Phils take a chance on him.
Gilbert has 91 2/3 innings of major league experience, working as a swingman with the Diamondbacks over the previous three seasons, famously throwing a no-hitter in his first career start. He currently sports a 4.32 ERA in his career, with a 17.1% strikeout rate and 7.5% walk rate. He was outrighted by the Snakes at the end of last year, which led to his minor league deal with the Reds.
The Phillies don’t really need starting depth in the short-term. Taijuan Walker recently returned from the injured list, which bumped Spencer Turnbull to the bullpen despite having a 1.67 ERA on the year. The rest of the rotation consists of Zack Wheeler, Aaron Nola, Ranger Suárez and Cristopher Sánchez. There’s also Max Castillo, who is on the 40-man roster and starting in Triple-A. Prospect Mick Abel isn’t yet on the roster but is also starting at the Triple-A level. Andrew Painter could be rehabbing at some point later this season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in July of last year.
But pitching depth can often be thinned out in a hurry, which is why there’s the old saw that you can never have too much. It’s also possible that the Phils may envision Gilbert focusing more on relief work as a way to unlock another gear with him. If he cracks the roster at any point, he still has one option year remaining and less than two years of service time.

Pile O. Cash is always a trade target for the Reds.
This one belongs to the Reds
They like cash. It’s just as good as money!

DD finally correcting that disastrous Kyle Garlick trade.

I wouldn’t call that anything more than a normall BB trade. Dombrowski is one of the shrewdest traders (and has been) during his 3 decades as a GM. Can off hand, think of 2 where he got fleeced big time.
1) Pedro Martinez
2) Rick Porcello
Both went on to win 150+ games over their respective careers, Both later won a CY award, Pedro in HOF etc,
Dombrowski should be better known for fleecing teams by using prospect talent (which usually flopped) to acquire proven AS talent in return. See Miggy Cabrerra, Chris Sale, Craig Kimbrell just a few.
Dombrowski opposite of Omar Minaya type GM. genius compared to.. Well.. I’d say Dan Duquette (to me) about the next best can remember last qtr century.

Was that all star talent worth it? I guess Cabrera was good but he never won a champ in Detroit, sale and Kimbrel helped 2018 champ but they had their own shortcomings (especially sale with the injuries)
Dom is good at trading prospects that flop but his return has its own problems
And don’t even get me started on the nick castellanos signing

“I guess Cabrera was good”. You guess?

I just said he never won a championship in Detroit
Is it really a success from the tigers standpoint? It is for DD since those trades helped him get better jobs
Phillls
Oh, boo hoo hoo. Castellanos was just soo terrible last year. Before you start with the what did he do in the playoffs nonsense, who did any better?
GarryHarris
DD is a great trader but he’s made a couple stinkers. Much of the bad trades in Detroit were more due to Jim Leyland’s then Brad Ausmus’s lack of willingness to use unestablished players such as Jair Jurrjens, Robbie Ray, Eugenio Suarez, Willy Adames…
So far, Tyler Gilbert has not been a good pitcher by any standards.

1) Is there any GM that hasn’t missed on a few?
2) The acquisition of Tyler Gilbert seems like a minor league roster filler more than anything meaningful. Maybe something happens with this, but for now it’s completely forgettable.
DonOsbourne
I would always be wary of dealing with Dombrowski.

I’d go there also on the castellanos sign as well. Many would have said 9at the time) Scwarber was a disaster waiting to happen and the massive deal for Nola this past offseason won’t take more than a cpl years to go belly up either.
His FA deals have not been his strong points over time, much like another strong GM, name of Theo epstein who had a reputation of being strong trader and organizational rebuilder, but awful signing any FA. Something Dombrowski mirrors in that regard.
Tough for any GM, no matter how good to be tops at everything. Philly fans should be joyous they hit a HR with Bryce Harper.

Many of DD’s extensions in Detroit were owner driven.

Phillies drafted this guy in the 6th round out of UCLA. Traded to the Dodgers and then the Diamondbacks snatched Gilbert from the Dodgers in the Rule 5 draft.

The real question is how does Brandon Phaat get so many opportunities. Hes one of the worst pitchers in the games. I was shocked when the Diamondbacks got rid of Zach Davies before the playoffs. Pfaat belongs in Double A. Gilbert while not that good either is clearlt better than Pfaat. Some of these orgs are just clueless
DarkSide830
Let me just say, having seen him twice in the CS, kid has some serious potential. Our inability to hit the guy swung the series in ARI’s favor. He’s not a finished project, but should be worth the wait.
