sad tormented neglected mariners fan
If the marlins trade jazz then the marlins will become the new national league White Sox, where it takes 20 rebuilding years to get 2 years of playoff baseball
hiflew
You mean they haven’t been that before?

Yankees should take notes. They have several players that should be demoted.
McGrundle
So, better than Mariners?
Mercenary.Freddie.Freeman
Jazz is overrated. Just another guy more concerned about his bad haircut than playing ball.

Hoarding talent at one position because there MIGHT be an injury is just silly. It doesn’t help the player, the fans, or the team.
The player is obviously hurt because being 5th on the depth chart means you aren’t playing unless there are several injuries or you deal with learning a new position instead of the one you have spent you entire life playing.
The fans are hurt because a team doing nothing is much worse than doing something and being wrong occasionally. I like the Mariners simply because they never let grass grows under their feet. Even if a few of the deals flop, they are still TRYING to get better.
The team is also hurt because while waiting for an injury to happen at a surplus position, you still have weak spots on your team. No team is built well enough that they couldn’t improve in SOME position. And if those injuries happen that means your 7th outfielder becomes necessary, you still have those other weak spots on the team that have not gotten better.
Unclemike1525
That’s not really the point though. The fact is when a team wants to trade a player that has value they almost always want P’s back in the deal. As an example, The Cubs could probably use Bregman even with the rough start. The Cubs have a surplus at 2 positions on the farm, SS and OF. The Cubs have a ton of pitching but I doubt none they want to trade especially after dealing Ferris. The Astros are also pretty good in the OF and SS. So even though there’s a deal to be made, It just doesn’t make sense. The Cubs went 9 deep at SP and that depth has already been tested as it has with a lot of other teams right now. Any trade you make, The team trading an asset is going to want pitching back. With Horton and Hodge in AAA now and looking like the next men up, The Cubs aren’t going to want to trade any of them unless you want Hendricks or Smyly which is highly unlikely. In fact the Cubs would love to make that deal. So it’s not a question of depth, It’s a question of having what the other team wants and what your team is willing to give up.
drasco036
That isn’t necessarily true, the Cubs could always involve a third team if they chose to do so.
Also, just look at our previous trade history, Baez for PCA, Rizzo for Alcatara. In today’s game you take the package with the most talent regardless of what position they play.
Not that this would happen but if the Cubs offered up PCA at the deadline for Bergman, Astros are not going to say “no we want pitching”.
Unclemike1525
Hoyer has made it clear that he’s not trading guys with 5 years of control for a rental. And that’s how I look at it also. I was just using that as an example of why that deal probably isn’t happening in any form. The Astros are probably going to hang a QO on him if they don’t re-sign him anyway. It was like the Cardinal fans who swore they could trade their extra OF’s last year for pitching. Position player for P almost never happens. But you can get a gold mine for a good young P. Cease for example.
Unclemike1525
Sorry. The original question was why don’t the Marlins trade their depth at OF for other things and I was just trying to say why it’s not gonna happen probably.
drasco036
Remind me again what the Padres got for Soto….
Unclemike1525
So you’re saying the guys the Marlins have, Have Soto potential? Gimme a break. Sorry when I typed that out the 2 haves in a row doesn’t look right. LOL
drasco036
I did say, “not that this would happen” I was just using it as an example as a Cubs fan.
I think typically you tend to see pitchers moved with more years of control than position players, hence why you see bigger “hauls” than positional players. I’m trying to think the last time a positional player was moved with a handful of years left that wasn’t something like Arenado. Goldy if I recall correctly got pitching back. Heyward got pitching back. Cardinals sent pitching for Ozuna.
drasco036
Don’t do what you typically do, say one thing then back track to something else.
You said position players rarely bring back pitching. Soto, a position player, brought back pitching. Nothing to do with the Marlins
Unclemike1525
And again I said and I’ll say it again if it’s not clear. Soto was an exception and the Yankees knew they were going to re=sign him which made the haul bigger.
drasco036
He re-signed?!?!? I missed that part.
Unclemike1525
You know he will. It’s the perfect place and park for his game. Why would he leave?
drasco036
Also, show me all these block buster trades that support your argument. Position players don’t get moved anywhere near as often as pitchers.
Also, bother Rizzo and Bryant brought back highly regarded pitching prospects.
bjhaas1977
I think he goes where he gets the most money.
hiflew
That is a bit of a different situation than what I am talking about. You are talking about the normal trade deadline deal of an established star being moved for prospects. That is not what I am talking about. I am talking about teams dealing from a surplus position to get similar players for different positions. Yes, sometimes it could be pitching needed, but there are teams out there that are short on infield prospects and outfield prospects.
The Braves have only 1 OF prospect in their top 15, but have 10 pitchers in their top 15. With as many pitching needy teams out there, the Braves could get a TOP outfield prospect for a couple of their pitching prospects. Could you be wrong and move a pitcher that works out for the other team? Of course you could, but you could also move a guy that never makes the big leagues for an outfield superstar. If you are afraid to make a trade like that, you probably shouldn’t be a MLB GM in the first place.
Mercenary.Freddie.Freeman
Braves are fine in the outfield.
cwsOverhaul
Indeed. Good execs aren’t scared of their own shadow allowing true weaknesses to persist in fear 3 or 4 guys get hurt elsewhere. If that happens, better to know your perceived strength is a myth due to lack of durability (or overloved prospects).
drasco036
Cubs and Dodgers made a trade just like this, Cubs sent Ferris for Busch.

I couldn’t agree more. having a guy that doesn’t help, when he could be exchanged for equal value for a guy that does help, feels a bit far afield.

Surprised this doesn’t include a bullet for the Bally channels going dark on Comcast last night.
Dalman21
I’ve certainly seen established players take their time in a rehab assignment to try and get right, but is there any precedent for an established star on a big major league contract being spent to the minors rather than dfa in a similar situation to Abreu’s? Nothing occurs to me.
jjd002
Well before the Mets were forced to take the fall – teams would just send them to the IL for a few weeks with a strained muscle or something equally as false.
