2:55pm: Rays manager Kevin Cash said after today’s game that Siri’s suspension was reduced to two games and he already started serving it, per Topkin.
1:05pm: Major League Baseball announced several suspensions today in relation to last night’s confrontation between the Rays and the Brewers. Milwaukee right-handers Freddy Peralta and Abner Uribe got suspensions of five and six games, respectively. Their manager Pat Murphy got a two-game suspension. Outfielder Jose Siri of the Rays got three games. All four parties also received undisclosed fines.
Murphy is serving his suspension starting today but both of the Milwaukee hurlers are appealing, per Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Siri will also be appealing his suspension, per Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.
Siri homered off Peralta in the third inning and then was plunked by Peralta in the sixth. The umpires conferred and ejected Peralta, despite the fact that no warnings had been issued in the game to that point. Murphy objected to the ejection and he was also ejected.
Siri came up again in the eighth with Uribe pitching. Siri hit a grounder to Rhys Hoskins at first base, who flipped the ball to Uribe as he covered first and recorded the out. Siri and Uribe exchanged words by first base before Uribe took a swipe at Siri. The two tried throwing punches towards each other as various parties tried to intervene with the benches emptying. Both were ejected after the fracas died down.
Adam McCalvy and Adam Berry of MLB.com spoke to the relevant parties after the game and relayed some natural differences of opinion about what transpired. Crew chief Chris Guccione said the umpires thought it was “clear-cut” that Peralta intentionally threw at Siri, though the pitcher denied it. “How many homers did I give up in seven years? A lot, and I never did something after,” Peralta said. “It’s my first time I got ejected from a game in seven seasons and there’s no reason for me to hit him.”
For his part, Siri denied that he celebrated his home run in any outlandish way. “I didn’t take too much time,” Siri said through Rays interpreter Manny Navarro. “I hit the ball, took a couple of steps and then I started running like normal.”
As for the later incident at first base, Uribe had this to say: “There were some words shared that didn’t have much to do with the game that probably shouldn’t have been shared there in that exchange.”
His sparring partner described it thusly: “When I went to first base, I just went there normal, and he kind of hit me on the shoulder,” Siri said. “So I asked him why did he do that? And he just said, ‘Because I felt like it.’”
As mentioned, Murphy is serving his suspension immediately while the players are all appealing. Their suspensions will be held in abeyance until the appeal process is complete, though players in this situation will often drop an appeal at a convenient time, such as when they were planning to have an unrelated day off.

Milwaukee ace did not go into a brawl. He was already out of the game and in the licker at the time.

A good reason to read over your post before you send it. On the other hand, we wouldn’t get such hilarious spell check errors like this one.
MrSeptember
Peralta was not in the brawl and was not throwing punches. He got thrown out earlier for hitting Siri on the 4th pitch of the AB in a game with no warnings issued and no jawing on his part while leading 6-1. Ump clown show. They lost control of the game and made themselves the center of attention. Pretty par for some of these guys.
youngliam
Umps once again showing their incompetence.
RunDMC
Whew! Thanks for the note.
martras
Peralta hit Siri in a blatantly intentional manner. That’s an ejection all day, every day. You don’t need to warn a pitcher.
KingKen
Oh please. There was nothing “blatantly intentional” about that. In fact the umps weren’t going to do anything other than send him to 1B and Siri wasn’t going to do anything other than that until Cash started whining about it. If it was that “blatant” the HP ump would have ejected him immediately.
afsooner02
You must not watch Peralta…like ever. 33 hit batters over 7 years and the wildness is part of his game. He 1000% was not trying to hit Siri. Worst case that should have been a warning. It was b.s. to toss him over it.
mp2891
Cash said nothing. What the heck are you talking about?
mp2891
Peralta threw intentionally at Siri. No warning needed. He deserved to get tossed. I wish this happened more often. Maybe then the unwritten rules of baseball would go bye-bye..
mustache101
You are not a smart person…. Why would he put someone on base?? He was pitching a great game just because he got a homer I doubt he cared….

Freddy Peralta wasn’t involved in the brawl, so, luck wasn’t needed

Why is Murphy getting a suspension? Just a continuation of bad umpiring directed at the crew for 3 straight games
windycity89
Any time a pitcher gets thrown out for intentionally throwing at a batter, the manager gets ejected and also suspended afterwards. It’s not a “Milwaukee bias” thing. That’s how it’s always been
Logjammer D"Baggagecling
The manager is always suspended. Mlb just assumes it was his call to throw at a player. Sometimes they make that call but they’ll never admit to it. Somerim4s it’s on the players. Probably the catcher calling the game.

KingZeke8
Did Peralta do something during the scuffle to warrant that suspension? Because asides from that, I don’t see how that HBP warrants 5 games. It was a 3-0 breaking ball. If you’re gonna hit them intentionally, you do it with a fastball. Also, no warnings? If there were warnings issued beforehand, maybe a bit more understandable but gosh.
windycity89
Yeah, only problem was it wasn’t a curveball: it was a 95 mph fastball straight into his hip/back area. Especially after hitting someone in their next AB after they hit a HR off of you and “watched it”, you leave little to no interpretation on what you were doing.
MrSeptember
He hit him in the leg on a 3-0 pitch. Not up and in, not on the 1st pitch or two. Maybe he hit him on purpose but that’s a pretty big leap for an ump to judge intent on. No jawing after or before. A warning would have been sufficient. Guccione acted like a clown and was not being the impartial voice of reason.
Most teams and fans would be pissed if their ace got thrown out in this situation and the way it was handled. Not like Freddy has any reputation of ever doing this kind of thing either. Oh well, move on and win today.
windycity89
Umpires don’t have to give warnings if they deem it as intentional. We all literally saw it in the second game of the season with Hoskins being thrown at after the slide incident. Not saying you’re wrong, but clearly the umps deemed it intentional and warranted the ejections
martras
So Peralta wasn’t actively trying to kill him? Well, then, no harm no foul, right?
MrSeptember
@martras New to baseball? Should every pitcher who hits someone with a pitch be ejected? Only on batters who have hit a HR that day? Only in 3-0 counts?
Even the Rays announcers said he shouldn’t have been ejected. This isn’t that hard. It’s subjective to judge intent in a non-obvious situation. If it was your team on the other end, you would be arguing the other way. No biggie but no need to clutch your pearls and cry about it.
KingKen
If it were that obviously intentional the HP ump would have tossed him immediately. That nothing happened until 1) Cash complained and 2) all the umpires got together to discuss it shows it wasn’t anywhere close to as clearly intentional as some want to make it out to be.
Paleobros
If you have a double and a triple, then hit a home run and pimp it on purpose to get plunked your next AB, does that count as a cycle?
skinsfandfw
A 5 game suspension for a SP really equates to 1 game. Pretty standard stuff in terms of suspensions when a pitcher is accused of throwing at a batter.
SODOMOJO
Yup, you have to give a starter 5 games to make it matter at all.
Braves_saints_celts
It won’t even equate to one single start missed as he will most likely start that 6th day as if he just had an extra day off from start to start. The brewers will most likely “reset” their pitching days anyway with this so it may even help with him starting after 6 days instead of 5.
Joirgro 2
5 games of pay.
Braves_saints_celts
I’m not talking about his pay I’m talking about his actual pitching.
texasguscc
You also lose pay for those games, so you want to minimize the suspension.
mp2891
What is with everyone’s fascination with a warning needing to be given? If a warning needs to be given before an ejection, then the pitcher knows he can intentionally hit a batter with no penalty. Sort of defeats the purpose of MLB not wanting batters to be intentionally hit.
SODOMOJO
My thought is, if a guy gets hit and it’s clearly on accident, and then the other team gets hit the next half inning; I don’t think it’s necessarily smart to just throw the guy out for “retaliation,” right away. At least with a warning you’re saying “look, no more or else you’re done.” Slippery slope to start chucking guys out of the game with no warning for hitting batters
Yankee Clipper
The purpose of the warning is because, unless otherwise stated, there is no way to know his intent. So, I agree with SODO, and I have no dog in this fight.
Umpires doing this just leads to inconsistency. And, in this case, the immediate ejection of Peralta led directly to the subsequent altercations/suspensions. So how did that help the game or the players at all?!

He doesnt even skip a turn in the rotation
Cheeseman Forever
Actually he will miss his scheduled start on Sunday at Wrigley.
Braves_saints_celts
Pitchers get shuffled all year long, pitching on the 6th day instead of his “scheduled” 5th day probably won’t even hurt the team and might even help them out by “resetting” the rotation. The braves gave our pitchers an extra day to reset the rotation by calling up elder to make a start. It had been fried sale Lopez, but with the extra day off we got it to be fried Lopez sale, so basically lefty righty lefty. Little things like that can help teams going forward and I don’t see him missing his scheduled start just to start the very next day after as something that could hurt the team.
mlb fan
“Skip a turn in the rotation”…Don’t suspended players also lose their salary during the time they’re suspended?
youngliam
Still essentially loses 5 days worth of pay though
AlanZ
I actually don’t mind if the umpires jump the gun and throw someone out for throwing at someone. I used to coach basketball, and in one game I had to beg the refs to call fouls or there would be a brawl. The kept letting the elbows and punches to the stomach and ribs go uncalled and bang, we had an all out brawl. It is very difficult to stop a fight involving 30 players.
Logjammer D"Baggagecling
Wwre you coaching Paul Crewe and Deacon Moss? Ludacris did tell everyone to throw them bows
cwizzy6
Except this ejection was totally unwarranted and was a huge reason a brawl started in the first place. It escalated as opposed to de-escalated. Thats the issue here.
Logjammer D"Baggagecling
Hopefully mlb rejects Uribe’s appeal and and increases his suspension to 10 games. Peralta and Siri did nothing wrong.
windycity89
Wrong. If you watch the video, Uribe starts saying something as they’re crossing paths. Siri had every right to ask him what he said while walking by him. Uribe then decided that slapping someone was the better option. In cases of punches being thrown in a bench clearing incident, then players should not be allowed to appeal those suspensions. You must suffer the consequences of your actions.
User 4245925809
MLB never gets suspensions/bans correct. Will always go back to when NY’s Graig nettles during brawl (one of many nyy-sox) seemed to hunt down and target bill lee. old videos will support this. he picked him up, then threw him down on his left (pitching) shoulder.
The LH Lee, who had won 17g 3y straight prior to that season would really never be the same again, tho he would have 1 more fine season several years afterward with the expos.
lee and nettles, if memory serves both got 10g for this. nettles hunted lee, should have been forced to sit out rest of that year and part of the next while lee had to go under the knife having his shoulder surgically repaired.
No.. suspensions are never fair and this brutality by nettles was 1 reason (or start) of holding managers in a way responsible later on.
Logjammer D"Baggagecling
It was on Uribe though. Looked like he lazily jogged to 1st. It didn’t look like Siri said much.
Rays in the Bay
As a Rays fan, can we un-appeal Siri’s suspension? He just plain sucks, dating back to his defensive mistakes last year.
Unclemike1525
Not surprised a brawl started. I watched some of those games on MLB network and I agree with the Brewers fans. That UMP crew certainly leaves a lot to be desired. But there are so many bad umps now that it’s becoming tragic. I thought Murphy was going to have a stroke the game before in the 9th inning. We can only hope these clowns don’t rotate into the Cubs -Brewers series this weekend. But that doesn’t necessarily guarantee an improvement.
Logjammer D"Baggagecling
The Brewers loved throwing at Willson Contreras when he was with the Cubs. Now they love throw8kg at Nico Hustle. I wouldn’t be the least surprised if there were 5 or 6 HBPs this weekend at Wrigley. All initiated by Milwaukee.
Unclemike1525
Watched a few Brewer games and they’re not shy about hitting guys. That guy Uribe is dangerous as he throws 100 but has no idea where it’s going. I would bet that this isn’t the last Brewer brawl we see but the Cubs have the arms to deal with any beanball war that starts. As for throwing at Hoerner specifically I doubt that as Nico stands in there as close as anybody.
Logjammer D"Baggagecling
Maybe not intentionally but he does get hit a lot by the Brewers
toddkirchenberg
Brewers have the least hit batters over the last 5 years. While the Cubs are the fourth highest. Hmmmm strange
Unclemike1525
Hmmm strange. The Brewers are right in the middle of the pack this year tied with the Cubs, W. Sox at 13 so the stats don’t support your factless statement.
baseball-reference.com/leagues/majors/2024.shtml#a…
cwizzy6
Thats hilarious. The Brewers RARELY hit batters. You dont know what you are talking about.
cwizzy6
Willson Contreras stands literally on top of the base and leans in with his enormous arm protection and then cries to no end. Dont bother defending him.
Unclemike1525
Then you literally can’t read or comprehend facts. Willson Contreras is the Cards problem now so I could care less being a Cubs fan. Hit him all you want. Be my guest. Although his brother might get offended.
Logjammer D"Baggagecling
And more time than not he was hit on the butt or his back. Anthony Rizzo was no different against the Brewers.
cwizzy6
You literally cried about his getting hit during his time as a Cub. Such a whiney club and fans.
Unclemike1525
Again you can’t read. Reading is a skill. I never brought up Contreras at any time except to refute your stupid statement.
MrSeptember
Give me a break. Contreras had his elbow almost hanging over the plate and is consistently towards the top of HBPs in the league year after year. The Brewers have no reputation for being involved in this kind of stuff and almost never have retaliated in the past. And even if what you’re implying is true, it would have been the Cubs current manager making those calls for the prior 7-8 years, which he didn’t. Guys like Contreras and Rizzo are always at or near the top of the list because they crowd the plate and lean out to cover more, which is why you need to pitch them inside.
Logjammer D"Baggagecling
They do pitch Rizzo inside. Maybe Contreras changed his stance a little bit I don’t watch him unless it’s against the cubs.
The Brewers definitely hit them. Maybe it was always on purpose but I watched Contreras on the Cubs for 6 years. He was hot a lot by the Brewers.
Unclemike1525
Contreras and Rizzo have been human dart boards forever. Hitting them isn’t even a skill as they invite it. It’s not a big deal.
ohmy
It must really be galling for cub fans as yourself always having to look up at the Brewers in the standings to make up stuff like you do.
Nico “Hustle”, seriously? I remember when I was in kindergarten like you are currently.
DarkSide830
Looking back at the Peralta video, it’s hard to not believe MIL was done dirty here.
cwizzy6
Done dirty in three straight games. Judge batting down a relay throw to no call that blew the game open. Then the mess to end the first game of this series. The ejection only escalated tensions and is 100% on the ump. Theres no conspiracy or anything, but some tough luck that boiled over with a completely unnecessary act by an overzealous ump.
DarkSide830
Wouldn’t put anything past these megalomaniac umps.
Insaneperson
Uribe is a dumb ****… Throws multiple punches and appeals. Be a grown ass man an accept your punishment.
cwizzy6
Not that I like it, but appeals are frequently done to make it easier for the team to handle pitching staff challenges due to the inability to replace a suspended player on the staff.
Unclemike1525
They’re appealing because they have a 3 game series coming up with the Cubs. As soon as that series is over they’ll spread them out to fit the schedule. Every team appeals them to fit the schedule. It’s not rocket science.
Cmurphy
I don’t think they can choose when to serve it, can they? If the appeal comes through in the next two days, they’ll be out for the full Cubs series, assuming that the appeals only shave a game off. And the team has to play shorthanded.
whyhayzee
Suspension should always start immediately. The appeal takes place within 48 hours. Then reduce if called for. The current delay tactic is supremely bogus.
Furthermore, all ejections should be for nine innings. Not just the rest of the game, that is supremely bogus as well.

Uribe is appealing? LOL

Dang this article takes me back to middle school.
cwizzy6
Siri is a liar. Uribe never “hit him on the shoulder” to start the fight. Its all dumb, but Siri is lying.
MrSeptember
This is why anecdotal eye test evidence is worthless when there’s actual numbers tracked. The Brewers are exactly middle of the road this year with exactly the same amount of opponents hbp as the Cubs. The 3 years before this, the Cubs hit more batters per game every year and sometimes significantly, including leading the league in 2021.
Nick Hogan
Siri threw more punches than Castellanos….just sayin
martras
Siri also got sucker punched in the face. Awfully tough to ask a guy to keep their composure after that.
cwizzy6
The “sucker punch” that was a slap that caught only air? Dont talk none, wont start none is the saying.
3 finger split
Couple of things
Murphy is old school and the manager is responsible for the actions of his players so of course he is suspended. Peralta did it right…hit him in the leg so he doesn’t feel like running instead of really hurting someone by one in the ribs or face.
Watching a home run is just inviting an ear hole pitch next time so act like you’ve been there before and nothing happens.
Suspension is fine but will be reduced and if you really want to put an end to this just make the fine on top of the suspension, that hurts the team and cost the player however much a game check turns out to be, make the fine on top of that substantial…start at 50k and go up from there with NO appeal allowed for the fine. That will put an end to these supposed fights that are really nothing more than a feeble slapping contest
martras
Sure, back in 1960 when pitchers threw 80mph fastballs. The ejection is to prevent a 100mph fastball at the head of the next Brewers player.
Uribe should have gotten 20 games.
MrSeptember
Huh? He didn’t even connect. It was much ado about nothing like most of these “fights”
ChuckyNJ
“Uribe should have gotten 20 games”? Not unless there’s something really horrifying, like Juan Marichal clubbing John Roseboro in the head. That was in 1965. Marichal got 9 games which was significant for a suspension back then.
cwizzy6
You are absolutely clueless to suggest that kind of suspension. Go watch a different sport.

Umpires decided who gets thrown out, so their the judge and jury. Why then no one judges the umpires in these confrontations.
If they go to robot plate umpire when this happens who is the judge and jury, then on questionable pitches thrown that hit batters.???
ChuckyNJ
Of course the umpires decided who got thrown out. Once the lineup cards are exchanged prior to the game, the umpires are in charge and their word is law.

Hey Siri, how do you feel about this suspension?
pretentious
Peralta said the pitch com battery was low, so Contreras called the 3-0 pitch traditionally. If you’re able to re-watch Siri’s at-bat, look at the sign Contreras gave and decide if that 3-0 inside fastball hit the spot he called for. If intent was the reason for the ejection and suspension, then I’m surprised Contreras didn’t get included in the suspensions.

The umpires’ actions ‘stoked the fires’.

Siri is the biggest idiot in baseball. I’ll be happy when he’s finally out of the league. I’m not a fan of either team, but Siri is a tool. Should have been a warning, that and the BS interference call the night before is where the crew lost the climate of this game. Not to mention the huge strike zone they gave only to Pepiot in game 1. They let Jim have two widths of a baseball in every direction
This umpiring crew caused the emotions to run high. Guccioni should be suspended for going at Murphy, after Murphy was heading back to the dugout.
