TODAY: The Angels have announced that Garrett has elected free agency. He’ll return to the open market in search of a new contract elsewhere.
May 15: The Angels designated veteran reliever Amir Garrett for assignment before tonight’s game with the Cardinals. Righty Davis Daniel has been recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake to take the vacated active roster spot. The move drops their 40-man roster count to 39.
Garrett pitched in six games for the Halos after they selected his contract in late April. The hard-throwing southpaw tallied 5 1/3 innings. He punched out 11 behind a huge 14.4% swinging strike rate but also walked five of the 24 hitters he faced. Garrett surrendered three runs on four hits, including a homer.
That’s par for the course for the 32-year-old. Garrett has posted higher than average strikeout and walk rates in every season since the Reds moved him to the bullpen in 2018. He was a setup arm for a couple seasons in Cincinnati before falling on harder times since 2021. Garrett combined for a 5.52 ERA over 123 appearances between 2021-22. While he had a solid 3.33 mark in 24 1/3 frames for the Royals last year, Kansas City released him around the All-Star Break because of his scattershot command.
Garrett struggled with Cleveland’s Triple-A team late last season and had a nightmarish Spring Training with the Giants. He had a good month for Salt Lake before being called up, working 7 1/3 innings of two-run ball with 10 strikeouts and four walks. Garrett started with three scoreless appearances for the Halos before surrendering runs in two of his last three outings. That includes last night’s loss to St. Louis, as he coughed up a two-run homer to Alec Burleson to break a 5-5 tie in the seventh inning.
The Angels will likely place Garrett on outright or release waivers within the next few days. He’d have the right to test free agency if he goes unclaimed.
Pete Rose is innocent Fry Ohtani
Why bother? He was probably the Angels’ 4th best pitcher on the 40 man…

Word on the street is that there’s a clubhouse factor here as well. I would argue there’s also an owners box and front office issue as well, but we don’t have 45 min to discuss that.
jyosuckas
What happened to this guy? He used to be a mid to top tier talent.
hiflew
Relievers are volatile. Always best to trade them at their peak. That is precisely why the A’s should be shopping Mason Miller NOW.
YouHaveNoGoodCarIdeas
@hiflew disagree. Miller has enough control that they should give him a chance to be a starter. That makes him much more valuable to move. They can always move him back to reliever if he fails.
He’s controllable through 2030. I don’t think youre getting more value this deadline vs 2026 deadline if he fails as a starter, but if you trade him and the other team moves him to start and he is at least decent, you wrote your own pink slip as a GM.
hiflew
The fact that some organizations would undoubtedly agree with you would help drive the price through the roof.
golfbrora
Pirates seem to have messed up this factor, by not trading David Bednar last off-season.
This one belongs to the Reds
When he lost his command, he lost it fast and never got it back. Also, teams knew how to get under his skin and he could never master the game between his ears.
Full disclosure – I loved the bench jockeys and would encourage them. It rolled off my back but that’s just me. As a catcher, I played mind games with hitters and even umpires too so just felt that was part of the game.

Relievers are a funny bunch, I used to say they are good every other season as that always appeared to be the case in the past.. Why? Im not sure, maybe they change leagues so the other league needs to play catch up, or they just are not used as much in a season so they become more effective. Its why I bristle at people saying its OK for starters to only go 5 innings (especially early in a season), as it typically roasts a bullpen and exposes relievers to more batters, adn there is more film and tendencies on record? Maybe its just dead arm from being used too much…
aragon
No logic in what Perry does with the bullpen.
Ted
BB/9 last four seasons: 5.5, 6.4, 7.4, 8.4.
Nobody wants that in their bullpen.
Rexhudler86
@aragon it’s slightly better than last year but it’s been bad before perry same with the starting pitching let the kids in the minors play. Let saurez go, cisnero. Try something different.

Angels won’t be good for probably the rest of the 2020’s so if they trade trout then they can fully turn the page
Rexhudler86
@angels I swear there’s a troll with 15 accounts that says that I don’t even care anymore because he has a ntc.
draker
I saw Garrett pitch for the Giants in Spring Training. He was once good but sadly he’s got nothing left.

I know you could say I’m horrible for liking this but I love a good brawl, and this guy did the best one for the 21st century
Gyo01
I still watch it from time to time. the one where it looked like the coach gave him permission(probably did) because they were being jabberjaws in from the dugout. I respected that FAFO moment too.

I still loved how David bell literally charged Clint hurdle and screamed at him “you’re a piece of s$$$!” like 20 times

Do the Cubs dare sign him?
This one belongs to the Reds
Them or the Pirates.
I would just invite TO over and get my popcorn ready.

I remember this guy pumping his chest and doing unnecessary taunting when did well. A Cubs game a few years ago comes to mind.

Arte Moreno The ringleader under the big top
Halo11Fan
Minasian has had four years to add minor league depth.
It’s a two headed dragon, and I think Minasian is even worse than Moreno.
Moreno has at least made a few good moves.
prov356
Halo – How do you determine which moves were made by who other than through speculation?
Halo11Fan
Don’t know, but it seems like Arte is more into moves he can sell. If a move is big, it’s Arte, if it’s smaller, it’s Minasian.
Sealbeach Comber
Halo11Shill get all his info directly from whoever pays him to spam post his nonsense deflecting blame from Moreno.
Moreno is the only constant here and don’t forget his latest gem….passing on a boatload of talent for Ohtani and instead trading away more of the farm in a foolish attempt to keep Ohtani. The only thing Moreno has done right is line his pockets while one of the most loyal big market fan bases in the MLB has gone 15 years and counting without a single playoff game victory.
Halo11Fan
LiarSealBeach. That’s the only thing he’s done right?
The Angels had the best record in baseball in 2014, it’s hard to believe that’s the only thing he’s done right? Your lying has blinded you.
And yes, when he sells the team, the Angels will be better off.
Halo11Fan
Hard to believe Minasian’s hope and pray bullpen approach has flopped again.
The Angels need Soriano in the pen more than as a starter. This became even more true when Stephenson went down.
Rexhudler86
@halo11fan might as well bring up the all pitching draft class. The infield is a mess but that’s why I wanted urshela. In hindsight would’ve matter because he’s hurt. The infield was definitely another concern that wasn’t addressed. Didn’t have another bat to replace ohtani, probably needed a starter so Soriano could slide into the bullpen. But now screw it and throw in towel. Bring up the kids. Probably could trade cimber, estevez, and Moore at the deadline but stop signing the amir Garrett’s. Let cisnero and saurez go.
Halo11Fan
I agree, you can’t throw in the towel now. For the season yes.
As far as the 2021 draft, it was one of the worst Angel drafts ever.
2020vision
Garrett is about as stable as Milton Bradley on ice skates. The Angels are a complete disaster. Any team looking to trade for Trout will need to hire a hostage negotiator to pry him loose from his captors.
BrandonGregory74
I would like to what Garrett could do working with a team who has coaches who are good with relievers. Tampa seems to use a lot of them with success. I think the stuff is there, the confidence isn’t. It took Garrett a long time to find his niche, much like many young Reds’ pitchers in that era.
BrandonGregory74

AngelsFan1972
2020…….but it is easy to imagine Amir Garrett as a “goon” in the hockey rink!
Since Trout has publicly stated he wants to remain an Angel, isn’t he his own captor then?
2020vision
True, but that was before the latest edition of Angels baseball. I’d have to think that Trout would gladly accept a trade.
Johnny Bravo
Well I still can’t believe we didn’t get nothing for Shohei The best player on the planet still didn’t get nothing for Shohei Ohtani
Nothing hmm the Angels didn’t get Nothing what idiot was in charge?
