The Marlins have been searching for a long-term answer at catcher since trading J.T. Realmuto to the Phillies back in February of 2019. The organizational hope at the time was that Jorge Alfaro, acquired alongside righty Sixto Sanchez and lefty Will Stewart in that very trade, could step up and fill the role. That never really came to fruition, and the Fish have cycled through him, Jacob Stallings and a long list of veteran role players in an effort to hold things over at the position.
It’s never gone particularly well, but it’s also never been as bad as it is right now. The Marlins opened the season with glove-first Nick Fortes and trade acquisition Christian Bethancourt lined up to shoulder the workload behind the plate. The results are quite literally some of the worst in history. Through the Marlins’ first 25 games — more than 15% of their season — they’ve gotten exactly five hits from their catchers. All have come from Fortes, who has three singles and a pair of doubles on the year. He’s 5-for-46 at the plate. Bethancourt is hitless in 23 plate appearances. Jhonny Pereda, recently selected from Triple-A Jacksonville to replace Bethancourt when he hit the IL due to a viral illness, is 0-for-5 to begin his big league career. (Miami reinstated Bethancourt from the injured list today and optioned Pereda back to Jacksonville.)
Overall, Marlins catchers own a staggering .068/.117/.096 slash line on the season. That obviously places them at the bottom of the league; by measure of wRC+, Miami catchers have been 138% worse than league-average (-38). Since Realmuto left the Marlins, their catchers have combined for a .223/.285/.345 batting line in 2734 plate appearances.
The Fish likely knew the catcher’s spot would be a weak point in the lineup. Fortes hit just .204/.263/.299 in 323 plate appearances last season but is a plus defender behind the dish who was credited as being five runs better than average by both Defensive Runs Saved and Statcast in just 774 innings in 2023.
Bethancourt has more power (11 homers, .156 ISO last season) but hit just .225/.254/.381 thanks to a lofty 27.4% strikeout rate and paltry 3.9% walk rate. He’s a rocket-armed defender who’s thrown out one-third of attempted base thieves in his career and ranked in the 95th percentile of MLB catchers for his pop time behind the plate last season, however. True to form, he’s thrown out two of the three runners who’ve run against him this season.
Bethancourt is also likely a favorite of Miami president of baseball operations Peter Bendix, who was the Rays’ GM when Tampa Bay acquired Bethancourt from the A’s last year and who quickly acquired Bethancourt in a trade after the Guardians claimed him off waivers from the Rays.
At the time of that trade, it appeared likely to be one of multiple additions for the Fish. Bendix said shortly after being hired that it’d be “ideal” to acquire multiple catchers over the course of the offseason, recognizing that it was an area of organizational weakness. In the most literal sense possible, the Marlins accomplished that goal; Bethancourt was acquired via trade, and the aforementioned Pereda was signed as a minor league free agent. It’s hard to imagine that a cash swap and a minor league signing were the goal at the time of those comments from Bendix, however.
Marlins ownership clearly didn’t give the front office much to work with in terms of financial firepower this offseason. The team’s only major league free agent signing was a one-year, $5MM deal for Tim Anderson. The Fish made little to no effort to re-sign Jorge Soler after he opted out of the final year of his contract — and that’s according to Soler himself. Even on the eve of Opening Day, the Marlins were still trimming payroll, shipping utilityman Jon Berti to the Yankees in exchange for a pair of minor league outfielders.
The Marlins clearly believe they’ll get more offense out of Fortes and Bethancourt — a low bar to clear thus far in the season — as they’ve made no effort to augment the position thus far. Veteran Eric Haase and his modest $1MM salary passed through waivers unclaimed in late March. When the Giants designated Joey Bart for assignment, the Pirates acquired him in exchange for a relief prospect they drafted in the eighth round last year. Veterans Francisco Mejia (Brewers) and Curt Casali (Cubs) both signed minor league deals with other clubs after the season began.
Outside of Bart (a long shot), none of those names was likely to emerge as a long-term option. They’re generally short-term stopgaps at best and future DFA candidates themselves at worst. But given the total dearth of production the Marlins have received from the catching position this year, even a short-term stopgap seems like a wise target — particularly since the farm isn’t likely to produce any immediate help.
None of Miami’s top-tier prospects are catchers. Will Banfield is the most highly regarded of the bunch, ranking 16th in their system at Baseball America and 23rd at MLB.com. Banfield, however, carries a similar profile to that of Fortes — a plus defender with questionable offensive skills. He’s off to a woeful .161/.203/.304 start in Triple-A and has struck out in an eye-popping 49.2% of his 59 plate appearances. Joe Mack, whom the Marlins selected 31st overall in 2021, is another glove-first option who’s further down the ladder. He hit just .218/.295/.287 in High-A last year, though he did rip through pitching at that same level this year (.347/.467/.561) and earn a promotion to Double-A in the process.
Fortes, Bethancourt and Pereda won’t keep floundering at this severe a level, but none of that trio is likely to emerge as a solid offensive contributor either. There was inherent risk in entering the season with a pair of backstops who sport career wRC+ marks of 69 (Bethancourt) and 70 (Fortes). Things have gone worse than anyone could’ve reasonably expected, but it was always a possibility that the Fish would be rostering one of the least-productive catching tandems in the sport — if not the worst. The lack of any meaningful effort to address the deficiency is perplexing but feels like something that can and will be addressed via the trade market — whether at this year’s deadline or in the offseason.
Miami isn’t going to go out and trade prospects for an established veteran — not when their season is all but lost before the end of April — but if and when the Marlins begin selling off veterans of their own, targeting some upper-level catching help wouldn’t be a surprising outcome.
DonOsbourne
I never understood why they didn’t sign Knizner.
Blackpink in the area
I was thinking trade them Herrera.
BannedMarlinsFanBase
Not for the return of Luzardo, Cabrera, Eury, or Garrett that the boneheads were suggesting on this site.
Blackpink in the area
What’s your suggestion champ? You want to trade White or Meyer?
BannedMarlinsFanBase
Not any of them. Keep Herrera. He ain’t worth what you’re asking.
Blackpink in the area
I never suggested an actual deal knucklehead. Prior to the offseason I suggested trading him for Rogers or Meyer but then the Cardinals signed Lynn and Gibson so that no longer made sense. Cardinals will probably have Edman available who would be a great fit for the Marlins even if he’s only signed through 2025. I don’t know if a deal makes sense now but Herrera is big league ready and I believe could be a solid big league catcher if given a shot. And I don’t know many teams that are looking to trade a guy like that with all those years of team control.
BannedMarlinsFanBase
I’m not talking just about your suggestion. There are other posters (some fans of the Cardinals and some of other teams) who kept making ridiculous suggestions as I mentioned.
As for Edman, why would we trade for that? We don’t have a regular spot for him and trading for a utlity guy is something I’m not trading much for.
And as for Herrera now, I’m still not giving Rogers or Meyer for him now even moreso because of how they have looked.
Blackpink in the area
Edman can play short, second and center and all three are positions the Marlins could use help at. He’s a utility guy who plays everyday he’s a valuable player but the Cardinals have Saggese and Scott coming soon so I think he will be traded.
If it’s all about how guys look then Luzardo should be available. Or Garrett since he’s been hurt.
The Marlins need a catcher and they needed one yesterday.
BannedMarlinsFanBase
Hmmm…Edman ain’t playing over Jazz in CF or Arraez at 2B. I’m not trading any of the guys you’re wishing for to have Edman as a starting SS. And a utlity guy is not worth the price you’re wishing for.
It’s all about how guys are valued by their team. The Marlins are in the business of making themselves better – not making the Cardinals better.
The Marlins can wait for another option. Herrera is no different than Bart when it comes to the gamble involved and the hype that fans place on him. Marlins didn’t trade for Bart, so I doubt they’re giving much for Herrera either. That’s the reality. But feel free to hold your breath waiting for the Marlins to give the pitchers you want for Herrera.
Blackpink in the area
Edman can back up center and play against lefties when Chisholm needs a day off. Arraez is not a good defensive 2b he probably should be a DH. If you think Bart is as good as Herrera you are simply wrong. And again I never actually suggested a trade I just said Herrera and Edman are good fits for the Marlins because they are.
BannedMarlinsFanBase
OK, then I’ll trade some second tier pieces for Herrera and/or Edman since I’m not trading any of our young SPs for either of them.
So are we good now or were you ready to state what you really want for either of those two players? Some of your fellow Cardinals fans had no shame in suggesting their trade demands, which is what I’m mainly referring to. But you can freely make your suggestion if you’re not happy with my view of how we and our team value our young pitchers in comparison to Edman and Herrera.
Blackpink in the area
The only thing the Marlins have that the Cardinals or anyone else would want is pitching. Like I said feel free to make a proposal yourself instead of whining.
stan lee the manly
And second tier pieces won’t get you a young catcher who has proven he can hit at the major league level with full control. It would take a young SP. Herrera is both more talented and more valuable than you are giving him credit for. Herrera is not even close to the same as Bart.
BannedMarlinsFanBase
Again, to both of you, I will pass on Herrera if it costs anything more than a second tier prospect.
And I still haven’t seen how Herrera qualifies for the term “can hit at the major league level” when he’s hit less in his career than Nick Fortes has in that, while his batting average and OBP are higher, but he has shown less HR power and struck out at a higher rate.
Champs64
Knizner would have been a better choice. Perhaps the 1.8 mil was too high for the fish or Andrew did not want to go to Miami.
Blackpink in the area
Knizner is a decent backup but I wouldn’t want him starting for my team. Herrera if given a shot could be a quality starter. He’s blocked behind Contreras.
Yeti
They aren’t attempting to win. That’s how you explain the decisions of 20-30% of the league at any given time. Manipulating the system to turn an overall profit &/or being “compensated” via draft enticements are the deciding factors for many teams, not Major League wins & losses.
Some teams do hope to win in the near future, so you might call it a plausible strategy (like when the Braves, Astros had a clear rebuilding phase). Others intend to lose for quite a while (Athletics, Marlins, Rockies, etc)
kdog4187
It is still very early but thus far the early optics of Bendix as a GM have been staggeringly bad. His inactivity has left a playoff team looking like one of the worst in Marlins history (and that is saying something)
BannedMarlinsFanBase
Hmmm…Let me see.
The bullpen held up the fort last year, so no reason to make too much of a change there.
Soler would have been nice to re-sign, but we also are stuck with Avi Garcia who has to play with that contract…and we have Bryan De La Cruz and Jesus Sanchez who earned their playing time.
SS was filled with an upgrade over Wendle. Bethancourt was expected to be an upgrade over Stallings.
I’m not sure what could have been done.
The FACTS of what has happened so far this season.
The bullpen has reverted back to its 2021 and 2022 version. The bullpen has taken 6 wins and turned them into losses ((6-19 records instead of 12-13 record as a result). Guess what? Peter Bendix didn’t build this bullpen. Kim Ng did and has been criticized since 2021 about it since it was the first thing she prioritized – and never was able to fix. See mlbtraderumors.com/2020/12/marlins-trade-rumors-bu….
Avi Garcia continues to be an automatic out. Peter Bendix didn’t sign him either. Kim Ng did.
Josh Bell is off to a slow start.
Jake Burger who is a middle of the order piece that started well is hurt.
Nick Fortes has now shown that he really isn’t a starting player. We needed to know that, so can’t really blame anyone for that.
And FYI, this team would have had the same issues if Kim Ng was still here, except she probably would’ve taken another nap in the offseason, and probably wouldn’t have even filled SS or Catcher because doing her job as Marlins GM seemed to always get in the way of her doing her self-promo stuff.
Let Peter Bendix screw up first before he gets blame. We gave the same courtesy to Kim Ng when she came in. We owe it to Bendix too…especially since the team is struggling due to Kim Ng’s moves, not Bendix’s.
kmk1986
Not sure what mlb teams see in Avisail Garcia he is brutal and doesn’t offer anything
BannedMarlinsFanBase
@kmk1986
I’m wishing through some pipe dream for Avi to have some value somewhere.
kdog4187
I don’t disagree with some of what you said. I also don’t blame Bendix for the bullpens utter and complete implosion. I do strongly question the organizations baffling decision to move AJ Puk from his role as a setup man to a starter which has been a staggering failure.
I also don’t necessarily disagree with the teams inability to resign Soler. I understand the predicament of Avi Garcia but at some point you just have to cut your losses. Even the Marlins have learned this lesson before (Wei Yin Chen comes to mind).
The Marlins “upgrade” at short stop of Tim Anderson over Jon Berti is laughable at best. Berti was a clutch bat who played well for the Marlins the last two seasons. Calling Anderson an upgrade of any kind is a huge stretch and he has played at the sub replacement level he established last season. Berti has also struggled this year so it could be called a wash at best.
You say Peter Bendix didn’t build this bullpen and you are right but he also knew what we had and did nothing to address it. I guess this my biggest complaint about Bendix tenure thus far… He hasn’t done anything and he needed to. Let’s not sugar coat things while the Marlins pen did play well no one was mistaking them for the Nasty Boys. Not only did Bendix not add a soul he subtracted Puk…
I don’t disagree with you on Bell and Burger. Burger got hurt and Bell is off to a slow start no big deal there…
You have lost your mind if you think we needed to see if Nick Fortes was a starting player. Anyone with eyes could tell you he is at best a backup catcher. While the catching market was admittedly thin Bendix only move was to acquire Bethancourt and he has been an absolute disaster.
You also conveniently left out his other pick ups of the offseason. Brujan and Gordon. Brujan has been an Avi Garcia level of failure thus far this season and Gordon has been mediocre at best.
To speculate what Kim would have done is ridiculous as we have no idea what she would or would not have done. We do know what Bendix has done and essentially out of the all of the moves that he has made not one of them has been successful for the Marlins thus far.
Look I am not a delusional fan. I understand with Alcantara out for the season this wasn’t going to be our year from the jump. However to say that this season has been anything short of a disaster is just ridiculous we are among the worst teams in baseball in almost every meaningful category. Bendix doesn’t just get a pass because he is new.
It is still very early in his tenure with the team and he certainly shouldn’t be judged by just the first month of the season. That is why I said the EARLY OPTICS look bad. His move of Puk has been horrendous. His acquisitions of Anderson, Brujan, Gordon, and Bethancourt have given us perhaps some of the worst production in the league (FACTS- First month of the season isn’t over and these four have already combined for a -1.0 WAR, that is god awful). I want this team to bounce back as bad as any Marlins fan and I sincerely hope in the long run Bendix is the right choice…. So far he has not shown me much.
BannedMarlinsFanBase
@kdog4187
I was bothered by the Puk decision as well. At this point, he needs to go back to the bullpen when he’s healthy again.
I’m for Avi being DFA-ed. Nearly every Marlins fan, and I imagine Marlins players, and Marlins coaching staff, are at this point.
Tim Anderson was an upgrade over Joey Wendle. Berti is better off as a utility guy, and more valuable in that role.
With Bendix and the bullpen, it’s a hard call to make a change after they did the job last year. Both sides of the argument can be seen here – a reason to go with status duo or to not trust it and add a big piece to close, which is their biggest flaw for years since it affects where everyone else is used. I’ll give him a pass on that since this is Ng’s bullpen. And yes, Puk was a bad decision without a doubt. In the very least, even if Puk was a backend SP caliber, it still didn’t help the Marlins as much as Puk being in the bullpen ready to take back the Closer role the second Scott faltered (again).
With fortes, due to the point of his career that he’s at, and the way he started when he first came up, him as a starter had to be looked at. Clearly he is not. And Bethancourt has failed, when it’s crazy to think he can’t even make us forget Stallings who was absolute garbage for us. I can accept blaming Bendix for Bathancourt. That’s his move that hasn’t worked out.
with the Brujan move, I agree that Bendix failed there. But we’re talking about a bench player. Brujan’s failure isn’t a key reason we’re stinking it up. As for Gordon, while he is flawed, I think we got the better of that deal for Okert. Okert was fool’s gold. Now with gordon, I will say that he is getting too much playing time, but it isn’t like Avi Garcia (our highest paid player) is pushing Gordon out of the lineup.
with speculating about what Ng would’ve done, we had her as our GM for 3 years. We got to know her routine very well. It’s very easy to speculate what she would’ve done. You think she was finally going to fix the bullpen that she failed to build since Day 1 in the 2020 offseason? You think she would’ve done anything that wasn’t a mistake we hate her for later? She’s living off a good finish of the 2023 Trade Deadline to try to make people forget ther first 2 1/2 years of her tenure with us.
As for Bendix’s moves, I still have to give him benefit of the doubt because he’s new here. Is it a good start? No. But is this team losing because of his moves? No. It’s Kim Ng’s bullpen that has killed the Marlins so far. If it wasn’t for that bullpen, the Marlins are 12-13 right now. That is a fact. Does Bendix get bashed as hard if the bullpen does the job and holds the leads they were supposed to? I doubt it.
Fair statements at the end. But if you’re this bothered by Bendix so far, I hope you were downright ticked off for what Ng did for what she did from her Day 1 all the way through until weeks before the 2023 FanFest. I hope you were especially ticked off at her 2022 trade deadline failure and 2023 Winter Meetings self-promo stuff instead of doing her job there. Let’s be fair.
kdog4187
I can agree with most of what you are saying including that Bendix deserves a fair chance. Ng was certainly not all sunshine and rainbows. By the way always a pleasure getting to talk to a fellow Marlins fan. We are too few and far between!!!

Bart seems to be doing pretty well so far with the Pirates. I’m a bit surprised by that, but it’s pretty early yet.
The Crew could send you Sanchez. He’s hitting lots of fly balls, just not far enough. Defense is a little better than I expected, but overall he’s taking up a roster spot with us that could go elsewhere.

Given the number of available FA catchers and veterans who are stashed at AAA, this is clearly a “where there’s a will, there’s a way” situation, and no matter what anyone thinks or speculates, results are the bottom line. Bendix is producing even less than his catchers.
BannedMarlinsFanBase
The Marlins are done this year. That’s the reality. I’m looking more at the trade deadline.
Realistically available trade pieces (not the clickbait suggestions that will be written about later) are as follows:
Josh Bell
Tim Anderson
Tanner Scott
Avi Garcia (if he somehow does something enough to make him tradeable – even if it means paying a lot of his salary)
AJ Puk (if he’s healthy and back in the bullpen)
For the boneheads who will make their pipe dream suggestions of trading dime-a-dozen prospects for guys like Arraez, Jazz, Luzardo, etc., those guys aren’t moving unless someone gives the Marlins offers that they can’t refuse. FYI to the boneheads – dime-a-dozen prospects are not offers that can’t be refused.
What I’d like to see.
Get Puk back in the bullpen when he returns. Give him the Closer role since it’s clear that Tanner Scott has never been able to show the mental and testicular fortitude to handle high-leverage situations consistently throughout his entire career.
I would’ve liked Sixto auditioning for the Closer role first, but him starting now seems like the way for him to audition first.
Get Banfield up at some point to see if we have something there.
Think of a way to get a SS going forward beyond this year.
Start looking at free agency and the money that comes off the books. Also look at an extension for Arraez if he has another big year. Arraez should be the priority. But then a DH/iB type along with that…and prefereably a Closer if Puk (or Sanchez or some young internal candidate) doesn’t lock the role down.

Let Fortes start for the rest of the year and see what happens. He is a better defensive catcher anyways and it’s not like Miami is in the playoff hunt.
Or trade an outfield prospect with breakout potential like Khalil Watson for whichever of Langliers and Soderstrom that Oakland doesn’t want.

You are totally right. Watson was traded for Josh Bell and he was a big contributed for them. I don’t follow baseball as much as I used to and it shows. I guess they’ll have to trade someone besides Watson for that catcher upgrade.

As season progresses Orioles SP may be in trouble. I could definitely see a package deal featuring Basello who is blocked by Rutschman heading to Miami for a package featuring a Luzardo or maybe a Cabrera.

Catcher offense isn’t exactly great around the league as it is. With a glove first backup in fortes it would have made sense for the Marlins to go for a bat first option like Gary Sanchez but they choose not to. On a side note, Jacob Stallings is hitting .316 for the Rockies…
