The Angels are dealing with a bit of a scare involving offseason signee Robert Stephenson. The righty reliever departed Saturday’s Triple-A rehab outing after facing one hitter (whom he walked). While details are still sparse, the team told reporters this afternoon that he’s headed for further testing after experiencing soreness in his throwing elbow (X link via Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com).
Stephenson has spent the entire season on the injured list, but the elbow issue seems to be new. His original IL placement came as a result of some shoulder discomfort that arose during Spring Training. The abbreviated rehab appearance was his first official game action as a member of the Los Angeles organization.
The Halos signed Stephenson to a three-year, $33MM pact that represented their biggest investment of the winter. While they more or less overhauled the entire bullpen, Stephenson was the only player to whom they made a multi-year commitment. They envisioned him stepping in as a high-end setup arm in front of Carlos Estévez, but his Angels tenure has gotten off to a rocky start. Stephenson was arguably the best reliever in MLB for the final few months of the 2023 season. After being traded from the Pirates to the Rays in early June, he threw 38 1/3 innings of 2.35 ERA ball with a massive 42.9% strikeout rate.
It’s far too soon to know whether he’s in danger of missing significant time. If there is a long-term elbow issue, however, it could have an impact on Stephenson’s contract status. His three-year deal includes a provision that the Halos would receive a $2.5MM club option for the 2027 campaign if he suffers an elbow ligament injury that knocks him out of action for 130+ days.

On May 21, 1992, Angels bus crash the California Angels team bus encountered a harrowing incident on the New Jersey Turnpike. The team was en route from New York, NY to Baltimore, MD when disaster struck. Twelve members of the Angels’ traveling party were injured in the accident, with the most severe injuries sustained by manager Buck Rodgers. Rodgers suffered a broken rib, as well as injuries to his left knee and elbow. As a result, he was compelled to take a leave of absence from the team to recover1.
Other individuals affected by the crash included:
Hitting coach Rod Carew (whiplash)
First baseman Alvin Davis
Infielders Bobby Rose (sprained ankle) and Gary DiSarcina (lower back pain)
Outfielder Junior Felix (lower back pain)
Bullpen catcher Rick Turner (laceration under left arm)
Trainer Ned Berget (bruised ribs and kidney)
Traveling secretary Frank Sims (cracked ribs)
Despite the gravity of the accident, only Bobby Rose spent time on the disabled list. In a moment of heroism, the Angels’ second team bus arrived at the scene shortly after the crash. The players on the second bus promptly assisted their fallen teammates, ensuring their safety until medical personnel arrived. Notably, pitcher Chuck Finley received praise from fellow players for his efforts during this critical time1. ️

Black magic. This team, my team, has been cursed since Gene’s purchase in 1960. Should it not be the doogers? They and the L.A. city fathers stole the land from individual landowners for their ballpark. Should not the doggers be cursed?

Another guy the Rays and their spin-rate love have ruined the elbow of. When will the Rays learn? Eflin and Pepiot are next on their staff for Tommy John. Mark my words.
sad tormented neglected mariners fan
Pepiot will definitely be the next ray to get the Tommy John, but after him I think it will be civale, then eflin. Fairbanks is going down this month you aren’t supposed to throw 100 mph as a ray
Karensjer
I hate being a Rays fan at this point of the franchise. They don’t retain young guys, they won’t spend money on a big name free agent, they are focused on spin rate which ruins the arms of their pitchers, and they are so close to winning it all but the previous reasons are why they never will.
alwaysgo4two
You obviously don’t follow the Rays much. Stephenson was picked up from the Pirates and they only had him focus on his unhittable slider, not his spin rate. Did that focus cause his issue? Doubt it. He had a thorough physical before he signed as a FA.
Karensjer
I’ve been following the Rays since ‘98 and I know their M.O. is finding guys with high spin rate and trying to get them to spin those curves and sliders even more. You need to create spin to throw said slider. I’m sure he was fine after the physical but he is probably still practicing bad habits that the Rays showed him like trying to get extra spin on that slider so while he was fine when he signed with the Angels, the Rays can’t be held blameless.
Black Ace57
Eflin had major injuries with the Phillies before he ever was a Ray.
TopJimmy84
Except that Eflin’s injuries in Philly were his knee and blister issues. He never had any arm injuries in Philly.
rct
When will the Rays learn? They did. They let him leave in FA.
Karensjer
You are right about that one. I was kind of ticked they didn’t resign him, but never thought that he would’ve needed Tommy John surgery for them. I guess that was a good call to let him leave.

FWIW, I didn’t even know who Stephenson was before he joined the Rays.
He had a career 4.90 and a 5.14 before joining the Rays. His career earnings were $5M, and he just signed for $33M. You can ruin my elbow for that type of money.
Unclemike1525
I was all for the Cubs signing this guy but then the price got too high. Glad the Cubs walked away now.

Add ’em to the ongoing pitchers getting surgery list.

I guess this could be an argument supporting Moreno’s reluctance to sign long term pitching contracts. But the real issue is he signs the wrong pitchers. They all have a troubled past with injuries and lack of performance. The articles always read the same:
“The Angles signed “XXXXX XXXXX” to bolster their pitching staff. “XXXXX XXXXX” is hoping for a bounce-back season after a rocky couple of seasons.”
Halo11Fan
The vast majority of these long term pitching contracts fans are advocating are bad contracts.
Fans just move on and advocate for the next bad contract. Teams, unlike fans, can’t move on. They have to pay for their mistakes.
prov356
I agree on the “Garrett Cole” type of contracts. But there are pitchers that we could have signed over the years that had better track records than Stephenson…but here we are.
Halo11Fan
In hindsight, yes. But fans have a worse track record than Arte.
The only pitcher I heavily push for was Wheeler. Fans wanted Cole or Stausburg. I wanted Wheeler.
carllafong
Yeah, Snell wasn’t long term– he was on a two-year deal, same with Montgomery.

Most often used phrase in baseball these days isnt “take me out to the ball game” or “lets plays two” but “so and so is suffering from elbow soreness”
Damn shame

Classic Angels signing! Gonna need a year off before he ever actually appears in a game for the Halos. Plug him into the group of Mo Vaughn, Vernon Wells, Josh Hamilton, Gary Matthews, Rendon, all the great pitching signings over the years. Ugh….. hopefully it’s not too serious and we can get something out of him while we are still close to .500

Thus guy made 33 million off of 38 innings. What a world.

Still a better investment than Anthony Rendon 🙂
aragon
Rendon is hitting well though not much power.
carllafong
No power. And he hasn’t hit for power for several years. You can’t have both your corner infielders with zero power.
Halo11Fan
Maybe not.
Buzzz Killington
Actually baseball reference says he is currently signed to a 3 year $33 thousand dollar deal.

Somewhere, Arte Moreno is feeling miserably vindicated on his reluctance to sign pitchers.
carllafong
Sure, sign no pitchers for a decade. That’s the smart thinking that’s led us sub-500 seasons for nine years..

Career year? One might say coming into his own, and he figured it out.
Wrong side of 30. Lol. 31 to 33 years are still prime for an RP.
Long term contract? Didn’t know 3 years was long term, and he’ll only be 33 at the end. Whatever!
Hell, with closer’s getting 20m per now, 11m isn’t all that bad for a FA set up man, and potential closer the last 2 years.
Yes, maybe a couple mill more than optimal, but that’s free agency. It just may not work out, but it’s not 240m for you know who.
RyÅnWKrol
Fans want big pitching contracts but complain about the bats the Angels keep having to eat. Same thing, different position. Arte is oddly being proven right. And he hasn’t even signed a mega deal for a bat in over 4 years. Best way to get pitching is to build it from within. Angels have a little of youth on their team and I think it’s pretty clear that Arte has switched gears. Fans are just going to have to bite the bullet while the Angels see what they have until their young core is ready.

*lot of youth

I don’t know what cliché to use for pitchers in 2024. Another one bites the dust or drooping like flies ?
Murphi Kennedy
They knew something about his elbow when he signed. Hence the provision in the contract. Its basically a 4 year deal now. He’ll get surgery and the team will still have him for 2 years post op
