Mike Trout To Undergo Knee Surgery

By Darragh McDonald | April 30, 2024 at 11:59pm CDT

The Angels announced on Tuesday that Mike Trout is undergoing surgery to repair a meniscus tear in his left knee. He was placed on the 10-day injured list. Alden González and Jeff Passan of ESPN first reported that Trout would undergo knee surgery. The club hasn’t provided a timetable but expect Trout back this season, though González and Passan report that four to six weeks would be a best-case scenario, with the caveat that doctors will need to get a closer look.

It’s unclear when Trout suffered the injury, as he was playing in last night’s game and wasn’t removed at any point. González relayed a two-minute video clip on X of Trout discussing the issue. Trout said he felt it a little bit in the third inning but it didn’t seem like a serious issue. But it was sore after the game and this morning, so he got it tested.

Needless to say, it’s an awful development for the Angels and for Trout himself. The superstar was in good form to start the 2024 campaign. He has already launched ten home runs and drawn walks in 12.7% of his plate appearances. He currently has a line of .220/.325/.541 for the year, which translates to a wRC+ of 142, indicating he’s been 42% better than the league average hitter. He also stole six bases in seven tries.

But that performance is now put on pause, the latest setback for a player who has become frustratingly injury prone in recent years. The last time he was able to play 120 games in a season was 2019 and he’s only gone beyond the 82-game plateau once in that span. He was healthy in 2020 but the pandemic shortened the season to 60 games. A right calf strain was the culprit in 2021, followed by back problems the year after that and a left hamate fracture last season. Now he’s set to miss some undetermined amount of the 2024 season while recovering from this surgery.

As has so often been the case, the Angels are struggling despite Trout’s best efforts. They are currently 11-18, which puts them ahead of just the Astros and White Sox in the American League standings. Now they will have to proceed without their franchise player in center field for the foreseeable future.

How the club will proceed without Trout remains to be seen. They just designated Aaron Hicks for assignment yesterday, subtracting one outfielder from the mix. Now Trout’s inevitable placement on the injured list will subtract a second.

Jo Adell has plenty of center field experience and has been hitting well so far this season, currently sporting a monster batting line of .321/.373/.623. Perhaps most importantly, he’s only striking out at a 23.7% clip, compared to a 35.4% rate in his big league time coming into this year. Taylor Ward is having a good season at the plate and should stick in left field.

Mickey Moniak may need to jump into a regular role, though his fortunes have completely flipped since last year. In 2023, he rode a .397 batting average on balls in play to a line of .280/.307/.495. This year, his BABIP has cratered to .189, leading to a line of .143/.200/.214. He was due for regression based on last year’s 35% strikeout rate but he has actually lowered that to 30% this year, despite the far worse results. Multi-positional players like Brandon Drury, Luis Rengifo, Cole Tucker and Ehire Adrianza have some outfield experience. Jordyn Adams is on the 40-man but currently on optional assignment. The Angels also signed Kevin Pillar to a big league contract shortly after announcing Trout’s injury.

Trout’s contract runs through the 2030 season. Many speculated that he might ask for a trade away from the Angels now that Shohei Ohtani is gone and the team made little effort to improve the roster this past winter, despite his personal attempts to lobby the club’s decision makers to do more. But in February, he said that asking for a trade would be “the easy way out” and that he still wants to win with the Angels.

I hope he is too but it’s not a guaranteed thing. Depends on recovery time, getting back into shape, etc. One of the few guys that play MLB that normal people can kind of relate to.

Trout has missed 626 out of a total 2,144 games as of Opening Day, 2024. Since 2021 he has missed ~ 49% of his games. Obviously, that number is going to increase since he is out for an unknown period of time this season.

So, if he doesn’t return this year, he will have missed approximately 756 games out of a possible 2,306.

In total, if he doesn’t return by the end of this season he will have missed 33% of possible games played. As of right now he has missed 30% of possible games played.

Yeah, and he’s already at 85 career WAR. Definitely one of the best ever (by the statistics) if he stayed healthy… I mean, mapping that out, he *should* have about 24 more WAR, which would put him at 109 career WAR. That’s incredible.

In the first seven years of his career, Ted Williams played in just under 54% of the Red Sox’s games. So there’s that.

And in the next eight years, he played in just over 71% of the games. So there’s that.

          Trouts rankings so far:
          28th in OPS
          35th in Runs Scored
          68th in RBI
          90th in Hits
          130th in AVG
          298th in Doubles

buuuut he did finish 4th in his junior high school spelling bee and i personally believe that makes up for these subpar #s, so yes i agree with ya’ll he’s had a “such a good start”. in fact, before he went down today he was 1st on my list of MVP favorites and i have him listed as favorite for MVP for the next 11 years as well

The thing about Mike Trout is that he is Mike Trout. He was, for long time, seen as a baseball God. Being 42% better than league average is terrible for a guy like Trout. He has shown his strength this year via the long ball but he’s also having his own Hercules moment with the other wonky numbers in his stat line. I really do hope he can come back because baseball needs Gods like Mike Trout.

Johnny brings up an amazing point here. You shouldn’t say anyone is having a “good start” unless they’re favorites for MVP. It’s Mookie, Ohtani and like Gunner Henderson then 950 bad players having bad starts all in a vacuum without contextual regard.

What really matters is player rankings in April. Johnny please keep educating these people.

not cherry picking coop, I’m being truthful. how about this, 521. slugging, 867. OPS. well above average. 7.9% home run rate, although his BABIP is low, its mostly because hes getting unlucky…. Gunnar? only a .3% higher home run rate. and a terrible 5.9% walk rate which is well below trouts. not to mention a higher K rate then trout by far. Ohtani? only a 4.7 HR rate, only 10% walk rate. Don’t just look at face stats, underlying numbers matter too. Yes Gunnar, ohtani and betts are having amazing seasons, but we have to give credit to trout where its due, and he’s good, and he’s having a good start.

RBI’s and Runs are situational. For RBI’s you need players ahead of you getting on base. To score runs you need players to get hits behind you.

          Home runs are situational too
If a pitcher sucks he’ll give up bombs
If a pitcher is wild he’ll walk hitters and put em on base
If an ump has a bad day he’ll make a poor call
Everything is situational in baseball , everything is based on the current situation. Who is on base who is hit in front of you who hits behind you, what pitcher is up what pitcher is warming up what the manager had for breakfast that day what the umpire’s wife yelled at him before he left for the game. Maybe a team played 19 innings previous nite and are out of gas today so someone will throw a no hitter. Maybe a tm hasnt scored in a week and erupt for 20 runs today
EVERYTHING IS SITUATIONAL FOR F SAKE

This is why I can never be a Dodgers fan
City of Los Angeles to make way for proposed public housing. The public housing plan that had been advanced as politically “progressive” and had resulted in the removal of the Mexican-American landowners of Chavez Ravine was abandoned after the passage of a public referendum prohibiting the original housing proposal and the election of a conservative Los Angeles mayor opposed to public housing. By 1958, the public housing plans were abandoned and the land was conveyed by the city to the Dodgers. The new plans were advanced to construct Dodger Stadium on the site, and in 1959, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department forcefully removed the last residents occupying Chavez Ravine.

As a Phillies Phan (and that is relevant to this comment) it could be that we have such a bad rep he felt the need to preface it.

Speaking of Griffey, Trout has a career 173 OPS+ where Griffey never reached that figure in a single season during his entire career. I found that pretty crazy considering how amazing Griffey was… fastest player to 350 and 400 hr up to that point, etc.

It’s also interesting comparing Trout to Ohtani since 2018. Trout with a 175 OPS+ to Ohtani’s 150 mark with only 1 fewer homerun (177 vs 178) despite playing in 137 fewer games.

I hope he comes back and transitions to a full time DH, whatever it takes to get his most valuable asset, his bat, available as much as possible.

“Personal best for Trout”..This is devastating to Trout fans including myself. Mike Trout played in at least 158 games in 4 of his first five full seasons and 139 games in the other one. Since then, it’s been progressively going downward and now it’s to the point that he can only last about a week to 10 days longer than Anthony Rendon before he’s injured and that says everything.

Recovery time for us normal humans: two to four weeks on crutches with a knee brace for the first six weeks. Depending on age, it can take 3-5 months for recovery. Not sure what else may be floating about in his knee or other problems.

It took me two weeks to get back on my feet and walking cautiously crutch free after four. It took six weeks after surgery for me to be running again. But that wasn’t at full speed. 2 months is where I was 100%. First month in bed, on pain killers, and getting up. Second month, slowly working back to normal with physical therapy, which lasted beyond that. That’s both knees, one at 14 and the other at 25.

Really depends, If the meniscus is salvageable it’s a longer recovery but better long term since you heal the injury.

If it’s not salvageable, they remove the damaged piece and you can pretty much walk out of the hospital and be back to playing in 3-4 weeks.

Not necessarily – depends on where exactly and how big of a tear. If it’s a small tear and they just need to remove a piece, it shouldn’t be too bad.

Michael Saunders had to be carted off for a similar injury, they ended up taking out 60% of his meniscus. Trouts doesn’t seem as bad just given that he was able to finish the game, probably a small tear

“Most overrated MLB player”….There’s NO way that Mike Trout is “overrated”. If “playoff wins” is the criterion for being “overrated” you’d have to also consider Ohtani “overrated” because even with Trout & Ohtani on the same team the Angels couldn’t even get close to the playoffs. I think the fact that neither Trout nor Ohtani could lead the Angels to the postseason illustrates that MLB is not the NBA where one or two guys can carry a team to victory. In MLB it takes good ownership, excellent drafting and development, health and good, deep backups for your front line guys. The Angels possess NONE of these things and so even with a couple of great players(Trout/Ohtani), the Angels are still LIGHT YEARS from ever reaching the playoffs.

Ron Washington needs to protect Trout from himself. Even if he’s only out 6 weeks or so, I highly suspect Washington’s not going to be giving Trout the green light to steal 20 bases again like he said he wants to do.

He’s hit 378 career HR. He’s 32 and only played more than 100 games once in the past few years. He’s probably not playing more than 100 games this season. His body (and skills like bat speed) are likely to break down even more as he ages into his mid-30s.

I like Trout, and I wish he’d been able to stay healthy. That said, he’s not hitting another 122 HR to get to 500.

Since the integration of baseball only one player has started their career with a better 10 year stretch. Mantle. That’s it. Trout hit better with a 3 point higher OPS+, but the shortened 2020 season made it impossible to have as high of a WAR.

Andruw Jones was a great player defensively and for a period offensively, and is legitimately a borderline Hall of Famer (albeit hamstrung by how lousy his falloff was). Mike Trout is an excellent player, and nowhere near a good comparison to Jones.

Same injury as Edwin Diaz last year at WBC..
He was out for a full year, and his injury occurred before the ’23 season started!
Diaz was celebrating when he tore his meniscus just jumping on the mound, and I see teams “STILL TODAY” getting in a circle and jumping around all together at the end of a game and just wonder “WHEN” somebody gets injured for doing something silly!!

I know a fairly recent Cy Young winner who pitched 7 and a third scoreless in Mexico only two days ago and who does not have a torn meniscus that they could sign right now for the league minimum…

How many believe they could shop Ohtani, Trout and Ren-done in one package back then even if they’d have to eat up some of their salary? Or at least Ohtani and one of the rest two?

It’s really unfortunate to see another one of the all time greats suffer an injury plagued career. I remember the talks of Trout eventually joining the 3000 hits and 600 HRs clubs. Now the talk is if he’ll ever play a full season again

I wouldn’t be so sure of that. The list of three time MVPs is short and Trout’s prime ranks among the all time best. You’ll also have to consider who will be voting on the HOF when Trout becomes eligible. A ton of younger writers with fond memories of Trout’s best days

You’re trolling, but I’ll play anyway.
When you are the best player in MLB for several seasons you are a HOFer. We can go over all the stats to back up his claim as a 1st ballot HOFer, however finishing top 5 in MVP voting for 9! years in a row pretty much determines how amazing this guy was.
You, OTOH, are a 1st ballot troll, which is annoying as this forum is actually populated by 98% of decent people.

Damn shame. If the Angels want any hope whatsoever of saving their season and recouping any kind of assets for Trout – they have to trade him right now to one of the two teams that could actually absorb his contract – the Phillies or Yankees. Here’s my blockbuster trade proposal I’ve been screaming for since December. After this, the Angels would have to consider it.

    Phillies get:
    M. Trout RF (36 mil over next 6 years)
    J. Addel LF
    A. Wantz RP (from PA)
    Angels get:
    N. Castellanos (20mil / 2.5 years)
    T. Walker SP (18mil / 2.5 years)
    C. Pache OF
    A. Bellatti (From CA)
    S. Aldegheri LHSP (#19)
    C. McGowan RHSP (#20)

Phillies can hang in there until the Allstar break without Trout, using Addel/Merrifield in RF batting 8th with an occasional Bryce appearance out there. The Angels fill a huge void in their lineup and rotation, and can’t be dubbed with the dreaded “rebuild” label. They also acquire two young prospects, one that’s off to great start at AA. The salaries of all the players involved cancels out for the next 2.5 years. The Phillies are responsible for the remaining 4 or 5 of Trout thereafter, but didn’t have to give up a top 10 organizational prospect to get him.

    Who says no?

Phillies. Trout’s remaining contract is an anchor and they already have a franchise face in Harper. Angels will always be in “rebuild” if their owner refuses to sign any starting pitcher long-term while unable to develop pitching. Addell, while having a good season so far, has a current .361 BABIP and will regress some. T. Walker is a decent mid-rotation starter and good value for his salary.

Both teams. Why would the Angels want a collection of questionable bodies from the Phillies? Why would the Angels give up Adell – he’s most likely the CF replacement? Do you really think Pache and Bellatti have any trade value whatsoever? And why would the Phillies trade two of their top prospect arms for a huge contract and an attached player that will miss a third of the remaining contract (on average)?

I’m convinced that Anaheim Stadium was built on a burial ground and the Angels are jinxed. Trout needs to get healthy and traded before a tarantula finds its way into his luggage and he ends up wiping out while surfing, or throws his back out hula dancing.

Trout is the best player of this era. He gets hurt a lot. He gets paid a lot. His team is always terrible.
As was alluded to in another thread on here the other day, Trout has a no trade clause and the Halos are not likely to be in any competitive position for several years.
So, even if the Angels asked him if he wanted to be traded so he can chase a ring, with his history and contract, who would offer much to LA for his services.
Trout will probably go down in history as one of the greatest players never to play in a WS.

Rough interview to watch. You can really see the frustration. As much as he wants to compete, he can’t do it alone. The team didn’t get the tools that it needed in the off season so I don’t think that the time off is going to change the direction of the team. Really sorry for you Mike and hope that you heal quickly and get back on the field sooner than later so that you can do what you like doing, playing ball.

Think they (including Trout) will finally figure out what was obvious no later than 2021—that Trout is simply a DH?

    How difficult is this?

Or will he continue to run out there until his skills completely degrade after the next injury or two?

They figured out after 2019 that despite an SB/CS record of 200/36, Trout should stop stealing bases because it was bad for his health. Let’s see if the Angels’ ‘braintrust’ can figure out he should stop playing the position on the diamond requiring far more running than any other.

When Trout and Harper appeared on the scene together. It looked like Trout had left him in the dust. I absolutely couldn’t stand Bryce Harper. But flash forward to now. Somehow Harper seems to have grown from punk to gamer vet in Philadelphia. While Trout is seeming more like a “What could have been”.

I was scouting the Midwest League when Trout played for Cedar Rapids. Scouts would put everything down just to watch him hit. No charting. No guns. He was incredible. Another scout comped him to Mickey Mantle. I thought that was so crazy. But he really did play show Mantle for a long time. I comped him to Eric Davis when he was 19 there. Forever it seemed cool that he’d outplayed that. But he’s trending a lot more Eric Davis these days.

Trout’s first 10 years in MLB were Mantle. That was his comp in every way. Maybe you should have kept your radar gun and stopwatch in your hand for that half season he spent at Cedar Rapids at age 18. He never played there at age 19.

Davis didn’t even get to the majors until he was 22. At the same age that Trout was playing in the majors, Davis was still playing short season ball in Eugene. If you were comping those two, I’m hoping you were an amateur scout and not one getting paid to keep an eye on those kids.

Sorry my bad…missed that half season by one age year.

Good lord you’re a jerk. I was actually a professional scout covering the Midwest League for the Rockies leading up to the trade deadline.

You don’t get casual conversation nor word of mouth comps. We were discussing future projection.

Projections. You’re Aspergers style literalism wouldn’t be much fun at any games.

His trade value just went into the dumpster. Best case scenario is that they trade him for one or more bad contracts after the season. Maybe they can ship him to Boston for Story, Yoshida, and Devers.

FWIW, while no normal person roots for an injury like this, this is an opportunity to re-align their l/t plans. They were always toast, but at least this gives them an opportunity to acknowledge it and make some changes.

Anyone not under contract for 2025 should be traded for whatever they can get. And the Angels fans are going to hate this one, but Schanuel should probably go down for more development. Probably Neto as well.

I thought log and hard about including Ward and a couple of others in there as well. I hate to have Trout return next year to even less talent than they have now, but I think you have to honestly assess the Angels chances for 2025 as well as 2024. This will be their 10th year in a row missing the playoffs.

They need to change the path they are on.

How many good years did they lose? They were some of the all-time greats, but they could have ended up on the Mount Rushmore of baseball players.

Don’t get it twisted. Trout got to experience being the best baseball player in the world for around a decade and all the hundreds of millions of dollars that go along with that. So he is still less deserving of true sympathy than almost any other person in the world, even though he is an extremely fragile broken down shadow of the player he used to be. But hey, at least he was ‘generous’ enough to pledge to donate a thousand lousy bucks to charity (hardly even pocket change for someone like him- he is paid at a rate of around $250,000 per game) for each HR hit a few years ago- which he sought and received publicity for. Albatross contract.
