The Mets announced that right-hander Kodai Senga has been transferred to the 60-day injured list. That’s the corresponding move to open a roster spot for left-hander Tyler Jay, who was reported earlier to be joining the club.
Senga, 31, was diagnosed with a moderate posterior capsule strain in his throwing shoulder during Spring Training and started the season on the 15-day IL. He’ll now be ineligible to return until 60 days from that initial IL placement, which will be late May. Manger Carlos Mendoza said yesterday that Senga still has not thrown off a mound, per Will Sammon of The Athletic.
The news of Senga’s injury came in late February and the club initially planned for a shutdown period of at least three weeks, though they later planned on adding another seven to ten days to be cautious. It was reported almost three weeks ago that Senga was to begin a throwing program but the fact that he has not made it to a mound yet suggests that he either had some sort of setback or is being ramped up very slowly. Whatever the reason, the Mets apparently don’t expect Senga to be able to rejoin the club in the next six weeks.
It’s obviously a frustrating development for Senga and the team. The righty came over from Japan last year and was an immediate success, pitching 166 1/3 innings with a 2.98 earned run average. His 11.1% walk rate was a tad high but he struck out 29.1% of batters faced while keeping 44.7% of balls in play on the ground. He finished seventh in National Cy Young voting and second in Rookie of the Year voting.
Rotation health has been an issue for the Mets so far this year. David Peterson required hip surgery in the offseason and began the year on the IL, while Senga and Max Kranick followed him due to spring injuries, the latter suffering a hamstring strain. Tylor Megill took a rotation spot to start the year but landed on the IL himself after just one outing due to a shoulder strain.
The current rotation consists of Sean Manaea, Jose Quintana, Luis Severino and Adrian Houser, with José Buttó likely to be recalled soon to join that group. Until the injured hurlers get back, Joey Lucchesi is likely the top depth option, as he’s on the 40-man roster and currently on optional assignment.

Looks as solid as any #4 in the League. Sinker looks great and will play up in that infield D. Poised, strong and nasty.
How’s Soto fitting in, according to you?
Joe says...
Loving Soto but I think this is his only year in the Bronx. Judge shouldn’t be in center more than one more year and Dominguez will be back this year and Jones will be up next year. Not saying they are as good as Soto but I think Cashman will go with the younger cheaper guys. Soto is bound for Queens.
BannedMarlinsFanBase
I can understand that thought about Judge not being in CF after this year, but how many teams really will be in play for Juan Soto? Yankees will be one of the few. The Red Sox and Mets suck and those teams would be for Soto if he’s only about the money – and note that the Mets need to sign Alonso too. The Dodgers have a lot already. How many teams after that will get in that run for Soto?
Gwynning
It’s a valid question, BMFB. I *think* my Pads will be back in, and sticking in the NLW maybe the Giants are in play. Beyond the teams you mentioned, there will be some wildcards. Orioles with new boss? Houston after shedding some $$$? Should be a fun offseason watch!

Um, I’m not sure why people keep saying this about 2020. Were any of the 30 MLB teams prevented from playing and winning the championsip that year? It seems that every MLB team played that year and had the chance to win the championship. The Dodgers were the best team that year period. It was a tough year for all of mankind. I respect their 2020 championship. They won, when all 30 teams had the same chance to win. The world and life as a whole was not easy to play in. They were the best team in those circumstances.

I am betting the Dodgers don’t make it all the way to the World Series.
Ooops better leave the betting to my interpreter..
A Rose by any other name doesn’t get suspended; but it sure smells
BannedMarlinsFanBase
Look who’s back! The Mets must’ve been winning some games lately.
As for theis statement, To be fair, Shohei, as of yet, does not seem like he was trying to affect games to win a bet. While people may say that for Rose too, there are some players like Gary Redus and a few others from the Reds that played under Rose, definitely have questions about some of his decision-making during that time. Heck, Redus was traded due to his issues with Rose’s managerial decisions that affected Redus’ role on the team – and in some cases, perhaps the results of games considering that Redus was a solid to good ballplayer with a lot of helpful skills.

1) fire Eric Chavez and Jeremy Barnes
2) release Narvaez
3) demote Yohan Ramirez
4) pray Marte gains enough value so Mets can unload him. Still going to have to eat a lot of his salary.

Kind of time to retire the Bobby Bonilla act. Not only is it getting old, but deferred contracts are the new norm. See the Nationals and Dodgers as prime examples.

Emotional over-reaction. Yeah, that throw Narvaez made last night was horrific. But its one play. So you want to fire the hitting coach, but also release the guy who has five hits in his last nine ABs? Ride him out and try to get some trade value out of him. Isn’t that what you’re suggesting for Marte? Why treat Narvaez any differently?
And yes, Ramirez has already been DFA’d. So he’s either gone at the end of that process, or he’s in the minors.
NYMETSHEA
Has Narvaez even thrown one runner out?
How many catcher interference do you see from Narvaez?
How many block able pitches he lets through, including that game between his legs?
NYMETSHEA
Marte is starting outfielder and cost 20 mil. He will not be cut. Only chance is hoping for rebuilt value.
Narvaez is a backup catcher that cost 6 mil, cant frame worth a lick, cant block, can’t throw out any base runners, gets called for catcher interference relatively lot, and generally… can’t hit

you release Narvaez and who is your backup catcher?

Senga can opt out after 2025 if he pitches 400 innings between 2023-2025. He pitched 166 in 2023. He probably won’t make those 400 innings so the Mets are going to be stuck with him in 2026, 2027, and 2028 (2028 has a conditional team option if Senga’s elbow puts him on the DL, which thus far isn’t the case). This looks like another really bad Mets contract now.
geofft
@ vanixip662CANCEL
You’re seriously jumping the gun on that one, and its interesting how many things you can get wrong because of that one premature supposition.
The opt out is still alive. He needs only 234 IP over the 24 & 25 seasons – 117 IP per year. There’s no word that he is out for this season. If he comes back in June, or even July and gets 70 or 80 IP in this year, the opt out is still easily attainable.
The contract pays him only $15 mil per year. Fourth starters are getting close to that kind of money these days, and salaries keep going up. So the chances of him not being worth that much seem pretty slim right now. The total contract pays $75 mil, and his 2023 performance was probably worth $25 mil on todays’ pitching market.
The 2028 vesting option only kicks in if he spends more than 130 days on the DL with an elbow issue. So as of now, they’re not “stuck” with him for that year.
All told, not even close to a “really bad contract” yet.
YankeesBleacherCreature
He’s already thrown on back-to-back days, just not off a mound. That doesn’t appear like he’s out for the season.
Trotski
How can you say it looks bad with one very good year and an injury? I guess if his arm falls off, but injuries do heal and he’s a good pitcher. I think you’re giving up a tad early my dude.
ALou
You forgot to fire crappy brainless Mendoza.
MetsSchmets
Very good point! He’s a jerk for always causing moderate posterior capsule strains! Senga’s shoulder was great when Buck was in charge of it!!!!!
ALou
We’ll be lucky if Senga is back by the All Star game.
YaGottaBelieveAgain
One of NYM AAA prospects and Peterson has the most upside of the group IMHO. Although all are probably NOT available until AFTER ASG Break.
Cautiously optimistic Butto pitches like a solid #3 or 4 starter.
Not looking for miracles from Houser I hope he gives us #4 Starter
statistics
Sevy has the most potential for UPside and DOWNside unfortunately.
Only other possibility would be a trade for a SP but NYM doesn’t have many prospects they can afford to trade.
Joey Lucchesi (LH) & Megill have some trade value in a package – Some talent (#4 type starters) and salary cheap
Roster spots NOT really adding much value
(To be fair It is still early)
McNeil (need him to be a line drive machine and better OBP)
Bader need some hits, OBP so we have some SBs, defense good+
No REAL backup SS: Short (defense, SBs), Wendle, (2Bs, defense)
Stewart (extra base hits) OF defense just average
(Probably candidate to lose roster spot when JDMart is ready
> which might not be for another 2-3 weeks)
IF he comes back TOO soon he is a good candidate for an oblique injury; Already has cranky back) Cortisone shot
I would try and give JD regular rest (4 games a week)
Narvaez (8M salary) defense D+ Trade , Pay part of salary 2.5M
Bring up Nido
Unless we get some prospects add an infusion of Energy Win total prediction is just above .500.
Mauricio would have helped alot (2B/OF) some speed, HRs ARGH

Senga is yet to begin a throwing program.
Mets fans are already into a throwing-up program.
Attystephenadams
It’s only two weeks into the season, and children are already pushing the panic button on the Mets, plus Mets haters are going to hate and troll, because they know they’re going to get a rise out of folks. This Senga “news” is not unexpected, and I’m not surprised by it.
Overall both the SP and the BP have been better than I expected. The problem is the lack of consistent hitting, especially the awful starts that Lindor and McNeill have had, which is causing Alonso to put too much pressure on himself to pick up the slack, and we’ve seen this before. Quite honestly, compared to other teams’ injuries I don’t think the injuries to Senga and Martinez are nearly as bad.
If they can get to .500 and tread water until the end of May when they get both of those players back, I believe that they will still be in the mix for a playoff spot for the second half of the season.
MetsSchmets
The weird thing is it’s often old guys. A lot of pessimistic misrepresentations of Mets related news is prefaced with “I’ve been a Met fan since 1962 and I saw Ralph Kiner eating a deviled egg once and this is worst team ever!! Fire Mendoza and end this charade”
Seaver rules
Who would have thought Lindor and McNeil would have such awful starts? Of course it affects Alonso. When JD is fit and ready by May 1st, and these guys finally warm up, it’s going to be a tough lineup. Real tough.
geofft
JD is now shut down for at least three weeks, plus whatever time he then needs to ramp back up to playing. Even when he comes back, Bader is a weak hitter, Marte doesn’t drive the ball much. They don’t have a real bench.
McNeil might bounce back, but it is not a given. He smartly took advantage of the shift, but thats gone now. He now has to re-reinvent himself into the hitter he was in 2019. But that was five years ago when he was 27 and in his prime. He’s 32 now, and we still don’t really know the condition of his injured UCL.
