The Marlins announced a flurry of roster moves this morning, highlighted by the club placing veteran outfielder Avisail Garcia on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain. Outfielder Dane Myers was recalled from Triple-A in a corresponding move. The Marlins also selected the contract of right-hander Emmanuel Ramirez, with lefty Kent Emanuel being designated for assignment in the corresponding move. Craig Mish of the Miami Herald first reported that Myers and Ramirez would be joining the club, while MLB.com’s Cristina De Nicola first reported Garcia’s IL stint and Emanuel’s DFA. Daniel Alvarez-Montes of El ExtraBase first reported that Garcia was headed to the shelf with a hamstring injury.
Garcia, 33 in June, signed a four-year, $53MM contract with the Marlins prior to the 2022 season and has struggled with injuries and ineffectiveness ever since. He’s been limited to just 153 games since arriving in Miami by hamstring and back injuries, and has posted a paltry .218/.260/.322 slash line with a 61 wRC+ and -1.3 fWAR when healthy enough to take the field for the club. His 51 trips to the plate for Miami this year have been a moderate improvement over his previous work in the organization, though his wRC+ of 75 is still well below league average. While it’s not yet clear how long Garcia will be on the shelf, his previous hamstring strains with the club have typically sidelined him for about a month at a time.
Filling in for Garcia in the club’s outfield mix will be Myers, a 28-year-0ld who made his big league debut with Miami last season. Initially drafted in the sixth round of the 2017 draft by the Tigers, Myers appeared in just 22 games for the Marlins last year, slashing a pedestrian .269/.286/.358 in 70 trips to the plate. He’s struggled similarly at the Triple-A level this season with a .237/.336/.323 slash line in 107 plate appearances with the club’s affiliate in Jacksonville. Nonetheless, Myers figures to be part of the club’s rotating outfield mix alongside Jesus Sanchez and Nick Gordon, serving as a right-handed complement to the pair of lefties.
On the pitching side of things, the Marlins are set to welcome Ramirez onto the roster ahead of what will be his big league debut once he makes it into a game. The 29-year-old has spent more than a decade in the minors while pitching in the Padres, Braves, and Yankees systems but will now get his first major league opportunity with Miami after impressive with seven strong outings at the Triple-A level for the club this season. During that time, Ramirez has pitched to a 3.86 ERA in 11 2/3 innings of work while striking out a whopping 32% of batters faced. If the right-hander can keep that level of production up in the majors, he’ll surely be a major asset to a Marlins bullpen that has lackluster 4.84 ERA that’s good for the eighth-worst figure in the majors.
As for Emanuel, this is the second time he’s been designated for assignment by Miami this season. He’ll return to DFA limbo just one day after being selected back onto the roster with a 10.50 ERA in six innings of work for the club across his two stints in the majors. The Marlins will once again have seven days to either trade the lefty or attempt to pass him through waivers. If they succeed in doing the latter, Rivera will have the choice between remaining with the club as non-roster depth until and unless they decide to select him to the roster a third time or simply electing free agency in hopes of finding a better deal elsewhere.

Maybe Avi’s ship has sailed
mlb fan
“Ship has sailed”…That Avi “ship” has always leaked and listed port side. I wouldn’t take it anywhere outside of a very large swimming pool. And even then, make sure you have plenty of life rafts.
Datashark
That ship sailed several years ago, the only reason they still port that sunk ship is due to the sunk cost they have on him. Its pretty safe to say that Marlins will decline the club option for 2026.
so that will leave Garcia playing out the string in 2025 as well

I think Avi will be designated for assignment shortly after the trade deadline, unless he is still on the IL

A very overlooked horrible contract that made no sense especially for an inconsistent player who has had a chronic injury or two. Worse when you consider the financials of the team.
lesterdnightfly
Not overlooked at all. Many questioned it at the time, and rightfully so.
Rishi
I mean overlooked when we talk about the worst contracts. Largely because it’s less money. But at least Rendon and most others had performed before their deals at high levels.
BannedMarlinsFanBase
@lesterdnightfly
Exactly. I was among the many that questioned it at the time.
At the time, Bryan De La Cruz and Jesus Sanchez had come up and did and performed to secure regular jobs. At the time, Bryan De La Cruz’s legs were a little younger, so he was passable as a CF back then. The thought was that, if the Marlins couldn’t land a CF, they could move De La Cruz to CF until they found one since it was easier to find a corner OF in the market.
The logic was, get one corner OF and a Closer (which was and has been the biggest need under Ng’s time) with the budget for spending she had. However, Kim Ng signed Avi for that contract, which people questioned why spend that when there were cheaper and comparable options, and the market was lower for Soler. But Avi’s acquisition was accepted because the thought was that they needed to grab one because that may have been their only shot. But then she signed Soler for a cheaper contract. That’ when a few questions came to mind.
1) Why sign Avi for this contract when Soler was signed for less money and guaranteed years.
2) Where was everypne going to play? Were the Marlins trading Garrett Cooper because the OF seemed to be filled with De La Cruz for CF, Sanchez for LF and Avi for RF? Soler could only mean a move to DH which meant that either Cooper or Jesus Aguilar was expendable since they were both 1B/DH options.
3) Was there still money for a Closer that we need (look at the guys that could’ve been signed that offseason for the Avi money)? We really needed and still need a Closer.
Instead, Kim Ng decides that De La Cruz isn’t good enough to make the Opening Day roster, so her initial decision was to send him down. She felt that Jesus Sanchez, who was about average at either corner OF spot, is now good enough to play CF. Jorge Soler will then play LF and Avi will play RF. The results were that, the development of both Sanchez and De La Cruz was disrupted; Soler couldn’t stay healthy while playing in the OF so often; the lineup was in disarray for many factors tied to all this; and best of all, the budget that could’ve been used for any one of the legit Closers that offseason was blown on an extra, uneeded piece for either coner OF or DH.
Absolutely questioned the very second Ng signed those deals.
And dimwits want to question why Marlins fans are thrilled that she’s gone? If she didn’t have that good 2023 Trade Deadline and the Playoff run, prior to the start of the 2023 season, it was a foregone conclusion in the fan base and local media and even parts of the national media, that Kim Ng was going to be fired after the 2023 season. She even knew it. The 2023 results put the Marlins in a position where they certainly had to excercise her option. But Bruce Sherman was absolutely justified to seek a higher up from a quality organization to make sure that her flaws wouldn’t screw up the team again. Unfortunately, her bad drafts, mixed transaction results, and horrible building of the bullpen has already put the Marlins in a bad position.
JoeBrady
Avi was a very consistent player. He was bad in:
2012
2013
2014
2015
2016
2018
2020
2022
2023
2024
Over those 10 years, he has a negative cumulative bWAR. It’s amazing he even gets a contract, let alone $53,000,000.
Rishi
Well in all fairness at the time he had been decent 3 out of 5 years offensively and seemed to finally overcome his apparent shoulder problems from earlier in his career. He had an injury that often takes years to return to form from (not always tho). But even so he was just a serviceable OF who should’ve gotten a one year deal.
amk1920
But we were told Kim Ng got a raw deal
BannedMarlinsFanBase
@amk1920
Remember, to all the dimwits, we are supposed to ignore every single screwup Kim Ng had.
Blackpink in the area
No GM is perfect. But she did a good job and led the team to the playoffs last year. Weird to hate on her now while your team is one of the absolute worst in the game. Getting Schumaker was a great move and because she’s gone he will be too after the 2024 season.
BannedMarlinsFanBase
@Blackpink in the area
Um, us Marlins fans bashed her for the two years before that playoff season.
Do you need a list of all her messups?
And as for this year and questioning why bash her while the team is performing this bad, it’s her bullpen that has destroyed this season.
Don’t let facts get in the way of a post. Or are you speaking about the Marlins from a position without actually knowing what went on here with her? It wouldn’t surprise me if you did since you thibnk we should give up our SPs for Herrera.
Blackpink in the area
Her bullpen? It’s not her team anymore.
One of the best managers in baseball will be moving on after 2024 because she’s no longer with the team.
BannedMarlinsFanBase
She built the bullpen. Keep trying.
Blackpink in the area
If the pen was bad the new GM could have fixed it. Turning Puk into a starter was that her idea? I didn’t think so.
#girlpower
BannedMarlinsFanBase
The pen came off a solid year. They earned benefit of the doubt. It was expectd that they all finally figured it out, but they clearly didn’t as they went back to 2021 and 2022 form.
Maybe your Cardinals should hire Ng.
And I’m not sure what #girlpower” has to do with this discussion. Please explain.
Blackpink in the area
So the pen was good when she was around she left and the pen is now bad.
And this is her fault???
#mansplaining
BannedMarlinsFanBase
The bullpen was not good when she was around. In 2021 and 2022 it sucked. And her beloved Closer choices blew everything in sight. It’s her bullpen that sucked for her first two years and then had what turned out to be a lucky year last season. The fact that she held onto those pieces for two years of complete disaster from them, she is responsible for that bullpen.
And I’m trying to understand what does #girlpower and #mansplaining have to do with this conversation. Do explain. I’m curious what does that have to do with a conversation about our former GM’s performance.
Blackpink in the area
So she is to blame for the 2021 bullpen when it was her first year but she’s also to blame for the 2024 bullpen when she’s no longer in charge?
That makes no sense whatsoever.
BannedMarlinsFanBase
She made the moves that brought in the bulk of that bullpen…including her choice for Closer, Anthon Bass.
FYI: mlbtraderumors.com/2020/12/marlins-trade-rumors-bu…
Do learn the facts before making statements.
Rishi
Didn’t they have several good relievers last year? Then she got Robertson at deadline. Marlins fans partially pi$$ed because they didn’t spend any money this off-season. They have had two different plans for their organization that they have scrapped last several years. First they want one leadership, then another, then another. Imagine working for them like she did.
Blackpink in the area
She led them to the playoffs and hired what would become the manager of the year. They went and hired a president of operations which basically meant she was getting demoted and because of that they let Schumaker out of his contract after this season. That’s stupid. Yes she’s a woman but it’s really not about that it just got more attention because of her gender.

“Banned” won’t like this news. It probably makes the earliest likely DFA some time in June
BannedMarlinsFanBase
Exactly what I was thinking.
If they didn’t pull off the move that Eppler should learn from, Avi would’ve been DFAed today! I would’ve won that bet by three days!
lesterdnightfly
“…highlighted by the club placing veteran outfielder Avisail Garcia on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain.”
Removing Avi from the active roster is definitely a “highlight”.
Shermanhater
This is best news I’ve heard all season. I can only hope he’s out the rest of his contract. This guy should be selling T-Shirts. I don’t wish any ill on Avi but it’s time to cut there loses and release him.
BannedMarlinsFanBase
That would be out for the season…and then DFAed in the offseason.
BannedMarlinsFanBase
Dear Mr. Billy Eppler,
This is how you skirt the IL rules and place a garbage player on the IL without getting caught.
Sincerely,
Peter Bendix and Kim Ng
Blackpink in the area
Why not simply release him? Just a couple days ago you were talking as if he had trade value……
BannedMarlinsFanBase
Get it right. I was wishing for him to have trade value.
I’ll trade him for Herrera. That’s an even trade. It’s closer to happening than Herrera for one of our SPs.
Blackpink in the area
Garcia is absolute garbage making 13 million a year.
Cardinals don’t need to trade a catcher. Good luck.
BannedMarlinsFanBase
Kin Ng sighed him. So she gets a pass now because she’s no longer with the team according to your logic about her bullpen?
And the Cardinals don’t need to tarde a catcher, but you’re straddling around instead of using the direct approach like your fellow Cards fans when they keep trying to push that Herrera for a Marlins SP trade. Herrera is garbage.
Blackpink in the area
It was a bad contract nobody said otherwise. You are the idiot who suggested trading him for Herrera. Why did you do that?
BannedMarlinsFanBase
I was making a point about you Cardinals fans spending so much time trying to convince people that Herrera for a Marlins SP made sense and was fair. I made the same type of trade suggestion…except I offered our gabrage we want to get rid of for your garbage that you all want to get rid of. Although the Herrera trade suggestions by you Cardinals fans involved trading the garbage you all want to get rid of for one of our valued assets.
Blackpink in the area
You kept mentioning some proposal that I never made while you were talking to me. That’s dumb. I don’t represent all Cardinals fans.
Garcia has negative trade value. Herrera has positive trade value. Your statement was stupid.
Herrera isn’t garbage he’s blocked. The Cardinals have tons of catchers Pages is big league ready looks like a solid backup. Crooks is playing well at AA and Bernal will he at least a backup catcher. And of course Contreras is signed for at least another 3 plus years.
The Marlins are doing great. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it right????
BannedMarlinsFanBase
Then, in all your posts related to the Cardinals getting one of our SPs, stand up and make a trade suggestion if your plan is not Herrera. Stop beating around the bushes and just say it…or did I already offset that with my statements about Herrera?
As for the tough season, thank you Kim Ng! Your bullpen has done a fine job with 7 blown games through the first month!
Blackpink in the area
You never made a proposal. I asked you to numerous times you never made a single one you just whined about what some other Cardinals fans said months ago.
BannedMarlinsFanBase
I’m not interested in trading our SPs to the Cardinals. You want one of our SPs, that means you make the suggested offer. What do you want to trade for one of our SPs because I’m not looking to trade our SPs.
Blackpink in the area
You aren’t in charge bozo. The Marlins can keep all their starters for all I care. Should work out great if half of them get hurt like they did this year.
BannedMarlinsFanBase
Thank you. You just confirmed what was blatantly apparent.
Keep Herrera.
BannedMarlinsFanBase
I think I’m figuring out the possibilties of the conversations over the last year between the Marlins and Avi Garcia every time they need to place him on the IL to improve the team.
Marlins: Avi, we need you to go on the IL so we can bring in someone that can actually help the team.
Avi: But I’m not injured.
Marlins: It’s either that or we DFA you. It’s win-win for both of us. You’ll get another shot to play when we feel we can afford to give you some playing time, and we only pay the portion of your salary that the insurance doesn’t cover. The other way, you have to find another team to play for…good luck with that. And we would have to pay your full salary, unless some team does sign you, but that’ll be for the league minimum. We both don’t want that.
Avi to his agent: Can you find me another team?
Avi’s agent: Avi, it’s a huge gamble. With you performance at this point in your career, you may never get another chance again. And even if another team comes calling, you will have to take a physical, which will include a urine, blood and hair test. Do you think you will be cleared for those?
Avi: OK, I’ll go on the IL
Acoss1331
I gotta ask, you think Bendix will give Avi the DFA at some point this year and just be done with him? He’s still signed for next year, are the Marlins willing to eat his salary for more than one season? Do you guys have players in the farm knocking on the door that can easily overtake Avi’s position and have better results?
BannedMarlinsFanBase
I think it’s coming. If not during the season, it’ll happen in the offseason as Avi enters the final year of this disaster. If Dane Myers rakes and makes a big impact, I could see something happening sooner for sure if there is no room for Avi on the MLB roster.
Right now, it’s just a matter of time.
MARLIN POWER 18
@BannedMarlinsFanBase
Despite his recent mini-slump at AAA Jacksonville, Dane Myers is a career .286/.361/.469 hitter w. an OPS of .830 across 1076 minor league ABs. He can hit for average and power, has above-average speed, and is a plus defender. This guy is ready to go. Let the man play!
BannedMarlinsFanBase
@MARLIN POWER 18
Agreed. Anything is better than watching the Avi-matic out kill rallies.
Now, what to do about Kim Ng’s bullpen? Today was the most brutal that it can be…and I don’t think it’ll be the worse day we’ll see. I’m convinced that this bullpen will blow a 10-run lead at some point this year.
MARLIN POWER 18
@BannedMarlinsFanBase
No lead is safe. I would never have believed – until seeing it with my own two eyes – just how bad this bullpen really is. As a former 1B/OF in high school and college, I know what it feels like to have a 10 – 1 lead evaporate and turn into a 14 – 13 loss. Sometimes you say to your teammates, “How many runs do we have put on the board to win a game?” And the answer would be like, “I can’t count that high.” In any event, Peter Bendix has a tough job in front of him, and I, for one, think he deserves the benefit of the doubt – at least for now.
terrymesmer
I forgot Garcia existed.
BigBallsLongBat
What an awful contract.
