The Mariners released right-handed pitcher Sean Poppen today, according to his player page on MLB.com (h/t to Tacoma Rainiers broadcaster Mike Curto). Poppen, 30, signed a minor league deal with the club in January.
The Twins selected Poppen out of Harvard in the 19th round of the 2016 draft. Though he was never a highly-regarded prospect, the righty rose through the ranks of Minnesota’s system, succeeding at every step along the way. He put up a 2.97 ERA in eight games of Rookie ball, a 2.77 ERA in 18 games at Low-A, a 3.15 ERA in 19 games at High-A, a 3.96 ERA in 26 games at Double-A, and a 1.55 ERA in five games at Triple-A before he was first called up to join the Twins in 2019. He bounced back and forth between the majors and Triple-A over the next four seasons, while he also bounced from the Twins to the Pirates to the Rays to the Diamondbacks. In a total of 63 MLB appearances from 2019-22, he pitched to a 5.08 ERA and 4.12 SIERA, earning three wins, one save, and six holds.
Following the 2022 season, the Padres claimed Poppen from the D-backs. Out of minor league options, he was soon designated for assignment and sent outright to Triple-A El Paso, where he spent the 2023 campaign. Over 58 1/3 innings, he posted an ugly 6.33 ERA and a poor 1.70 K/BB, his worst in any season at any level. He elected free agency in November.
Although Poppen received a spring training invite from the Mariners this year, his time with Seattle would turn out to be short. He pitched well in five outings this spring, striking out eight and walking just one in 5 2/3 innings of work. Unfortunately, he didn’t look nearly as sharp in his Triple-A debut with the Tacoma Rainiers, giving up two walks, two homers, and four earned runs over two frames in a 7-9 loss to the Oklahoma City Baseball Club. While he performed much better in his second appearance, retiring all four Salt Lake Bees batters he faced, it wasn’t enough to save his job in the Mariners organization. Poppen is now a free agent.

M’s are Poppen off!

I remember him! Mary’s son, right?

I guess it’s to emphasize the player who is the subject of the article lost, but seeing the losing score first, 7-9, looks very strange.
Oklahoma City not having a nickname for the team also is odd, a throwback to more than 150 years ago.

Poppen fresh free agent

Mr. Poppen’s Pitching hasn’t been so fresh. Oh well, a spoon full of sugar makes the medicine go down as they say.

The fastball is no longer Poppen.

I need a calm rational Mariners fan like Stevil or SODO or Fred or whomever’s available to help talk me off the ledge.
Teoscar Hernandez: .300/.349/.999 OPS
Jarred Kelenic: .583/.643/1.393 OPS
Eugenio Suarez: .355/.382/.898 OPS
Why can’t the Mariners have nice things too?? Good hitters come to T-Mobile and fail. They leave and can’t stop hitting. Mariners cursed? Is it the cold weather & stadium & marine layer??? Very despondent and wanting to drink every last drop of alcohol in the house.

Watch the history of the Mariners on YouTube. They could be the most statistically unlucky sports franchise of all time.

We’re only 8 games into the season.
Relax and enjoy baseball.
Go Mariners!

Our enjoyment level has been watching sloppy baseball so far. The start of every year.

Lee, I am completely bewildered at how bad they are playing right now. Just no fire in them.

Did anybody see the game last night? The M’s get back in the game only to hand the game back over to them. Totally crazy stuff. I know it doesn’t make a lot of sense but after three walks in a row someone else might be brought in? Or was there not someone else available? I mean, if you’re going to lose a game this was not the way to lose one. ….Never again.
Fred Park
Lee, I’m hoping that was the slap in the face that the team needed to jar them into playing better. Each player has to say …”Never again.”

Well, someone has to say it. They are playing 54% worth.

I bet Dana Brown is calling him right now. Seems to be signing every reliever he can find now that the Astros are in last place. Letting half your bullpen walk over the winter and then signing one guy, after the rest of the market is picked over, for the price of 3 or 4 other decent middle guys, just doesn’t make sense. And I think he’s finding out why a team that plays half it’s games at Minute Maid Park hasn’t had many LH pitchers over the years.

The rubber match:
I picked up the game in the bottom of the fourth thinking I could catch a competitive game. I thought here we go again. Handcock he just isn’t ready yet, so we can expect these kind of results coming out of him. I didn’t know the rotation order… so OH well. I still watched the rest of this torture.
Some observations there are so early successes I think Moore should get more playing time we know he’s good with the glove but in the batters box he just looks better he’s getting on base more often either through hits or walks he just doesn’t strike out as much he still likes that inside pitch that can cause him some problems like pop-ups, and foul balls even strike outs. This could turnout to be breakout season finally for him. I had always thought that he was capable of better results given some either time or some good instruction in the hitting. So continue giving him more playing time.
If I keep on going I will surely run out of ink. I also wanted to mention this new guy we got from Kansas City he might also get more playing time he seems to be with that speed of his a real catalyst for this team. the other day he laid down a good bunt. How many times have we seen any bunts with this team? Never? I’m done for now.

Todd Van Poppel? He’s still around?
