Few players have had a more difficult start to 2024 than Kyle Hendricks. The Cubs righty has been rocked for 24 runs over his first 17 innings. He has surrendered an MLB-high seven home runs. Hendricks has allowed more than a run per inning in each of his first four appearances, only completing five innings once.
That’s a far cry from his resurgent showing last season. After consecutive seasons with an ERA near 5.00 in 2021-22, the veteran sinkerballer rebounded with a strong 3.74 mark. Aside from a six-week stint on the injured list, Hendricks had a strong year. It was a fairly easy call for the Cubs to exercise a $16.5MM team option for 2024. While it didn’t always seem as if things were trending in that direction, Hendricks’ platform showing was impressive enough that the option was a straightforward decision by the time it was up for consideration.
There’s still plenty of time for him to turn things around, but this clearly isn’t the opening the former ERA champ and the Cubs were expecting. Hendricks’ starts have come against the Rangers, Dodgers, Padres and Diamondbacks. They’re all above-average to excellent offensive teams, so it isn’t as if the Cubs have faced an easy set of opponents. Still, this is the worst four-start stretch of Hendricks’ 11-year MLB career in terms of run prevention. He has typically been a slow starter — his career ERA in March/April is more than a run and a half higher than in any other month — but this is an especially rough few weeks.
It’s difficult to know how much emphasis to place on any player’s first couple weeks of the season, especially ones at an extreme. The Cubs surely don’t want to overrate what amounts to a 17-inning sample. Hendricks is a particularly tough pitcher to evaluate because he’s an anomaly in the modern game. He had an excellent seven-year run to start his career behind top-of-the-scale command and an elite changeup to overcome well below-average velocity. Over the past three-plus years, his results have been less consistent.
The velocity and movement profile on Hendricks’ pitches this year isn’t much different than where it was in 2023. His changeup isn’t missing quite as many bats, but his game has never been built on swing-and-miss totals. The far bigger issue has been the damage Hendricks is allowing on contact. Beyond the homers, opponents are hitting almost .400 on balls in play — nearly .100 points higher than the league average.
Both the home runs and BABIP will come down to some extent. Hendricks certainly isn’t going to continue running an ERA above 12.00. Yet it also seems that last year’s sub-4.00 mark was probably anomalous. Hendricks surrendered just 0.85 home runs per nine last season but was in the 1.6 HR/9 range in both 2021 and ’22. Maintaining last year’s success keeping the ball in the yard was always going to be a tough task. Even if his home run rate settles back into the 2021-22 range, Hendricks would project for an ERA approaching 5.00.
That could eventually force the coaching staff to consider moving him out of the rotation. They’re not at that point yet. The Cubs list Hendricks as their probable starter for Sunday’s series finale with the Marlins. That’ll be by far the weakest lineup against which he’s gotten the ball this year. Manager Craig Counsell indicated yesterday the Cubs weren’t considering skipping that start.
“I think frankly, all of our pitching stuff is we’ve got to get through every day,” Counsell told reporters (link via Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune). “And then we’re in a tough enough spot, right? We’ve just got to get through the day and then reevaluate it and make an assessment going forward. We’re going to need Kyle’s innings in his next start.”
That could lead the Cubs to proceed with a six-man rotation for the time being. Jameson Taillon has been reinstated from his season-opening injured list stint and will take the ball Friday. He slots back into a starting staff that also includes Shota Imanaga and Jordan Wicks. If the Cubs wanted to go back to a five-man rotation, swingman Javier Assad and rookie Ben Brown would be the straightforward candidates for a move to the bullpen or (in Brown’s case) back to Triple-A Iowa. Yet they’ve each pitched well in the early going. Assad has allowed only four runs through 16 2/3 innings. Brown has allowed eight runs — six of them in a rocky first start — over his first 16 1/3 frames with a solid 23.4% strikeout rate.
The Cubs have been without ace Justin Steele since he left his Opening Day start with a hamstring strain. He’s coming off a recent 25-pitch bullpen session but won’t be back in an MLB game until sometime next month. That could buy the coaching staff time to stick with a six-man rotation or temporarily bump Brown out of the mix. If everyone else is healthy by the time Steele comes back, they might face a tougher decision on whether to continue giving Hendricks the ball every fifth day.
Chicago is midway through a stretch of 10 consecutive game days. They’re off next Monday, their only reprieve before they play 19 in a row through May 8. After his start against Miami, Hendricks would be in line for matchups against the Red Sox and Brewers if the Cubs stay on a six-man trajectory.

I hope it’s just a rough patch. Really enjoyed his resurgence last season, and he’s one of my favorite pitchers to watch work when he’s doing well.
MLB Top 100 Commenter
The Professor is one of my favorite few players of all time. Unfortunately, I do not see a resurgence, but maybe he can tame the fish in his next start.
kripes-brewers
Brewers fan hoping it lasts at least through May…
seth3120
Hasn’t he had rough patches before? I remember hating when he pitched against the Cardinals I would by no means be giving up on him especially this early
For Love of the Game
Hendricks has given up an “MLB-high seven home runs?” Kenta Maeda is jealous he wasn’t given credit for being tied!
SODOMOJO
lol that was like watching bp today between he and the rookie
Mikenmn
In the old days (I’m old) I believe some of the sinker-ball pitchers would get off to slower starts because they needed a little fatigue to get drop–too strong and they’d overthrow. But that could be completely wrong.
woodhead1986
I was thinking about that concept the the other day, being “too strong” for certain pitches to be effective.
drasco036
If I were the Cubs, I’d go with a six man rotation just to see if Hendricks can get himself right. They have Smyly, Thompson and Wesneski in the pen, all three can give you multiple innings of relief. I believe Keegan and Wesneski can both give you high leverage innings if need be as well (assuming Thompson has found his groove). Also, worse case, you can bump any of the starters to relief if absolutely need be for an inning or two and just move up the rest of the rotation and they would still be on full rest.
No way should the Cubs be entertaining moving Assad or Brown out of the rotation.
cubfan16
Wesneski has already been sent back to AAA
Unclemike1525
So you just make stuff up to see how it flies or what?
Unclemike1525
Apologies. I thought there was a minimum of games you had to stay before you can be sent back. Well hey thanks for saving the pitching staff here’s your all expenses paid trip to Iowa and a free ticket to the Corn shucking contest on Sunday. Good Luck!
jb226
He’ll be back as soon as he’s eligible. He just pitched four innings so he wouldn’t be available for a while, and the Cubs need all the arms they can have available with how their pitching staff has performed lately (and with uncertainty around Taillon in his first start back from injury).
mike127
Uncle–there is a minimum of days you need to stay in the minors, not the majors. Of course, that minimum can be manipulated in case of injury at the major league level.
I think Wesneski’s move back down is partially due to the weather and rain out Thursday. Simple math now leaves the Cubs “probably” needing AT LEAST six, probably more bullpen innings on Saturday with the doulbeheader and it’s doubtful that Wesneski would have been available. Perhaps a quick inning…but a fresher arm in Brown gives them a much better cushion.
Also considering Taillon’s first start and Hendricks starts on Friday and Sunday, they have to, at the very least, prepare for shorter outings and a more than average bullpen innings. Here’s hoping that one or both can go six plus.
Ben Brown becomes a very important swing man leading to the off day on Monday. Would be pretty nice if Assad and Imanaga can provide a lot in their starts.
drasco036
I agree, Cubs will need a couple fresh arms for the double header. Question is who gets the extra roster spot?
I think with the double header and then a run of 16 straight, Cubs should keep a six man rotation. Try to keep Brown and Imanaga’s innings managed early on vs possibly seeing them wearing down late in the season like Steele did last year.
mike127
Dras, I guess the “logical” choice is Cuas…but please, i really don’t know the exact rules on eligibility when you go down and if the impromptu doubleheader puts Little or Palencia (or even Wesneski) back in play.
If none of them are legal I think Porter Hodge is the only other arm on the 40 man that can be shuttled.
drasco036
I don’t know the rules either, I know a pitcher has to stay in the minors for 15 days if optioned unless there is an injury but clueless if there is a double header clause.
It’s interesting with Little, Palencia and Wesneski all being optioned recently, the pickings are slim off the 40 man…Arias perhaps?
Unclemike1525
Anyway it’s my worst nightmare realized. A useful player goes down( Wesneski) while 2 underperforming and overpaid lemons are still here( Hendricks and Smyly) And another worthless player( Wisdom) Comes up. Mastrobuoni is a wash. he was hitting the ball fairly hard with no luck just like he did for a spell last year. So let me ask again, Are we really better now? I don’t see it.
mike127
Uncle—that’s really NOT your worst nightmare realized. Please.
Wesneski has been useful for exactly one outing….wildly inconsistent for a couple of seasons now. Recency bias.
The overpaid lemons are in a tough stretch, especially Hendricks, and have no options left. Again, recency bias.
Yes, we are better now—point of fact….we have guys like Little, Wesneski, Palencia in the minors (yes, slight to Cuas)—that means we have 16-17 valid arms to use at almost any given time.
Through this morning we have had our 1-2 starters COMBINE for less than five innings pitched and are 11-7 against a tough schedule and 12 of 18 on the road.
As much as iIm not a Wisdom supporter either—let Jed and crew manage the roster. They’ve built a pretty good one and seem to be doing just fine.
Logjammer D"Baggagecling
They should’ve done this from the start.
Steele (when he returns)
Wicks
Imanaga
Jamo
Assad
Hendricks
Unclemike1525
Well Taillon was injured so there’s that. Wicks is pressing, He just needs to relax and throw strikes. Hottovy needs to earn his pay there. My choice for the extra guy for the DH would be Pannone. He was dealing until his last outing but he should be well rested and can give you innings. So with Taillon and Steele both being hurt by day 1 guess I don’t get the post Jammer.
mike127
Explain me this, Uncle. Pannone???? He’s not on the 40 man so you have to sacrifice a body to bring him up. And, he has no options left, so you risk losing him.
You risk losing two players for one day. In April, not worth it.
For me it’s either Hodge or Arias (thanks dras)—IF any of Cuas, Little, Palencia, Wesneski are truly not eligible to be recalled.
Unclemike1525
40 man space? Really? You have Brennen Davis on the 40 man. Arguably the 8th best OF in the organization. Mastrobuoni on the 40 man. If you’re not going to use him put him on waivers. Cuas on the 40 man. He’s basically useless. Put all 3 on waivers and if they clear assign them outright. Hopefully they’ll decline. That’s 3 right there. Useless players. If you’re going to cry about them ask a question. How hard would it be to replace ANY of those guys? I bet there’s pretty good chance you actually IMPROVE the team Addition by subtraction. And toss in Wisdom too. RH utility payers who whiff 40% of the time are hard to find? Gimme a break.
Unclemike1525
I’ve even got a crazier than crazy trade idea. Cubs trade Smyly and Hendricks to San Diego for Jake Croenenworth. Jake makes 12 million a year until 2030. 12 million a year for the Cubs is peanuts. Jake can play any IF position and is a VERY good LH bat. San Diego would be ecstatic to get rid of Jakes deal for 2 expiring deals. Jake ends the need for, In no particular order, Wisdom, Masrtrobuoni, Smyly, Hendricks and gives the Cubs an extra 15 million for the deadline. Smyly and Hendricks make 27 million, Jake 12, Do the math. Gives the Cubs way more depth and devastating lineup. Crazy right? About as crazy as assuming those 2 pitchers make a reliable duo. Heck Petco might even be a park that they can keep the ball inside.
mike127
So you would really in a 24 hour span lose Pannone and one other guy on the 40 man just to have Pannone there for the DH???
There are no 60 day IL options so you have to DFA someone to put Pannone on the 40 man. Pannone as no options so he would have to be DFAd also on Sunday morning.
You need to take your personal emotion about all those guys out when talking about the roster. It’s all emotion and no thought.
We’ve got an open spot at the weekly poker game if you are interested.
Unclemike1525
I have zero problem DFA’ing the 3 I mentioned before.
Unclemike1525
And Pannone replaces Smyly. Permanently.
Logjammer D"Baggagecling
Can he play 3rd?
Unclemike1525
Croenenworth can play any IF position. And has.
mike127
Just want to be sure I am reading this right—you would DFA any of those guys for a 30 year old relief pitcher that has a lifetime ERA well over 5.00 and you would trade for Cronenworth, who would have absolutely no spot to play on the Cubs, right? A guy signed for another 6 years that would cost either Busch or Morel from the lineup….
Just want to be sure we are all reading that correctly.
You just can’t get rid of guys like Smyly and the such because YOU don’t like the way they pitched last time out.
Unclemike1525
You can’t win anything by sticking with guys you made a mistake on. Jed is keeping his pets ( Smyly, Wisdom, and Hendricks ) instead of facing reality and at least trying to move guys who aren’t championship material. We have better guys than that on the farm. But he needs to control the money better if he’s not going over the tax then he has to reduce the payroll for additions. Starting P’s are dropping like flies and now is when a creative team will make a few bold moves that could win a championship. Yeah sure they will reset a bunch of money in payroll next year. How EXACTLY does that help anything THIS year? If you think the Cubs are Championship right now with this team you’re either delusional or need to cut down on the grains. Brennen Davis has been here for years and is only here because somebody can’t let go. Mastrobuoni is borderline 4A so get off your a** Jed and get somebody better. Bold GM’s make those kinds of moves.
Johnny utah
i’d argue josh hader has had the worst start
it took him 2 weeks to give up more runs than he did all of last season
he’s probly been the #1 closer in all of mlb for about 5 yrs now
those ‘stros are just bad luck this yr
solaris602
Seems their karmic debt has come due, and there are no deferrals available. Must be paid in full in 2024.
Johnny utah
Ye their run is over
No amount of trash cans gonna save em now
rememberthecoop
Look, I know what he’s meant to the Cubs, but you just can’t keep him in the rotation. He’s throwing nothing but garbage. Beachballs. There’s simply no room for nostalgia when you’re trying to win.
Lloyd Emerson
Who do you replace him with?
Cmurphy
When Tallion comes back, he can replace Kyle in the rotation. And when Steele comes back, Assad, Wicks or Brown can be moved to the BP, whoever is doing the worst.
Jgwi2az
I will enjoy him looking like 2021 Jake Arrieta!
ElectricEddie
Hendricks should be out
Just don’t know what to do with him
The 3 kids are doing well and need to stay
I’m also concerned with Taillon
I’m not giving him much rope and maybe he should be gone when Steele returns ?
MLB Top 100 Commenter
Some teams – in consultation with the player – would phantom IL him until they need a spot start to give him a couple last chances.
solaris602
If they need guidance on phantom IL placements, Billy Eppler is available, but he’d prefer to be paid under the table if you know what I mean.
FartCopter
Kyle Hendricks was great in Boo! A Madea Halloween.

Hes not heavy. He just bad

“The Cubs surely don’t want to overrate what amounts to a 17-inning sample.”
I surely do. I love him for everything he has done. But this isn’t his usual slow start. We’re all cooked at some point.
User 624265706
As I mentioned in another post, retirement may be in his near future. But you’re right, eventually we all have to lay the burden down, let a younger generation take over.
SeanStL
Imanaga, Wicks, Assad, Brown, Taillon. Bump the worst performing of those last 2 when Steele returns. Hendricks should be mid relief when we are getting blown out until he rights the ship.
DarkSide830
What looks like 3 bad seasons in 4 doesn’t seem like a fluke. Hendricks may be salvageable as a decent 4, but that’s probably his ceiling now.
cwsOverhaul
Trades with WSox are no longer unusual. They can cherry pick someone like Fedde or Clevinger for back end of rotation if they are looking decent.
Manfred Rob's Earth Band
Why don’t you post stats of what Kyle’s done in April the last 3 seasons? That may be more helpful than the other stats you’ve posted.
jhanley108
Winning teams find the next guy regardless of popularity or what they did 8 yrs ago. It’s a brutal game, but if the young players are ready let them play. The same for Wisdom, why is he on the roster? I’m sick of excuses from this team, but that’s the culture-Yay we’re almost good! Ownership that knows nothing about the game, just making and taking $.
drasco036
Could be the fact Wisdom posted an OPS+ over 1.000 against the NL Central and over .900 in the second half.
Also probably has to do with the fact he destroys sinkers, change ups, sweepers and sliders.
Good managers put bench players in favorable match ups, Wisdom is a good bench player it just took Ross too long to accept it.
Brick House Coffee Tables Inc
Can’t let him see an opposing lineup twice right now. He’s going to have to eat it on Sunday thanks to Saturday’s DH, but after that he needs to be paired with Ben Brown or Keegan Thompson in a piggyback situation until Steele gets back.
MLBTR needs to hire editors
Oh great, another one of these half-hearted attempts to be Fangraphs by regurgitating stats from there or Statcast in order to seem more than just a transactional news site.
User 624265706
When Kyle went through this in the past, didn’t the Cubbies send him down to the minor leagues to figure things out? I’m afraid that if he has one more bad outing, you’re either going to see him benched, demoted to the minor league, or you might even see him retire. Thoughts?
