The Dodgers are calling up right-hander Dinelson Lamet, per Robert Murray of FanSided. The righty is not currently on the 40-man roster and will require a corresponding move.
Lamet, 31, had to settle for a minor league deal this offseason after increasing struggles in recent seasons. Though he looked like one of the better pitchers in the league in the shortened 2020 season, his ERA jumped in each campaign after that. But he appeared to be in good form during Spring Training with the Dodgers, as he made four appearances with just one earned run allowed. He struck out five batters, walked just one and got grounders on 60% of balls in play.
If he were to get even partially back on track, it would be a nice find for the Dodgers. Lamet made 12 starts for the Padres in 2020 with a 2.09 earned run average, 34.8% strikeout rate and 7.5% walk rate, finishing fourth in National League Cy Young voting. But he missed the postseason due to biceps tightness and the health issues continued beyond that season.
He dealt with some forearm issues in 2021, with the ailment being labeled as tightness, fatigue and inflammation at various times. He also underwent a procedure for a hip infection that year. He made 22 appearances but only nine of them were starts as the Friars gradually moved him more to a relief role as he battled those issues, his ERA ticking up to 4.40 in the process.
His struggles worsened in 2022 and he got flipped to the Brewers as part of the Josh Hader deal. Milwaukee quickly put him on waivers, indicating his inclusion in the trade was mostly for financial reasons. He was claimed by the Rockies and finished the year with a 6.12 ERA. He split time between the Rockies and Red Sox in 2023 but his ERA jumped all the way to 11.41. His strikeout rate had fallen to 22.1% while his walk rate climbed to 15.9%.
The Dodgers will obviously be hoping to see that trend reversed and have Lamet in better form than that. He has more than five years of service time and can’t be optioned, meaning he’ll have to stick on the active roster or else be removed from the 40-man entirely at some future point.
Adios Crismett?
Bingo
Breaking news—he’s not very good.
Are you saying he’s lame?
Carry – agreed. My crystal ball says after he is called up for someone who is injured, he will last about a week before he gets his DFA.
Most people on this site assume when someone is called up they are supposed to be good and stay on the roster for years to come. That is simply not so. Some call ups are true prospects who will last and contribute, but a significant 40% to 60% are roster churn, depth call ups who are optioned back to AAA, or for players out of options, DFA.
Welcome to the bullpen carousel of the dodgers.
He’s better than lamet
Assuming Crismatt will be sent out, though Joe Kelly would be my choice.
Dodgers aren’t likely to eat Kelly’s remaining salary 5 games into their season
oh wow – they fixed him already
According to the summary, the Dodgers are hoping to see the trend reverse. That would mean a 15% strikeout rate and a 22% walk rate. That doesn’t sound fixed to me.
Don’t be surprised if he does well for the Dodgers. They seem to have the magic potion to turn former DFA’d pitchers into valuable pieces of their bullpen. Just look at Ryan Brasier last year as their latest example. He was DFA’d by the last place Red Sox. He gets called up by the Dodgers after a couple of weeks in the minor and was lights out for them. This has happened multiple times over the last 3-4 seasons in LA. We’ll see if Lamet is the next one to figure it out in LA.
Brasier has a new pitch, Lamet will need one of those
My guess Vesia is optioned.
option the only lefty in the pen? I don’t think so.
It’s a bold strategy, Cotton. Let’s see if it pays off for ’em.
Yarbrough is out there as well. Doubt they’ll give away Crismatt after a promising outing last night. Only Vesia and Grove are optionable and Vesia likely unavailable tonight anyway.
I should have said Vesia is the only short LHR. Yarbs is the swing/long man. But I agree Crismatt bought himself some time with last night’s million changeup outing. I think someone is nursing a minor injury we’re not heating about. I’d send Grove down to work on command.
*hearing about
Ryan Yarbrough is still in the pen
Yarbourgh throwing right handed now?
Vesia pitched the last two days. Roberts not going to use him 3 days in a row. Plus the Dodgers are starting Paxton, a lefty, plus Vesia can be optioned.
Hmmmmmmmm…
They’ll Lamet the day they send Crismatt down:(
*golf clap*
Dinelson Lamet, French for weak sauce
DDT
Participation trophy
I hear that the Dodgers are sending Shohei Ohtani down to AAA.
@BaseballBrewTown
Yeah, he’s been pretty bad to start the season. Those Japanese players don’t always translate well to MLB. Needs more seasoning in the minors.
Have to think it’s Grove getting sent down.
He’d have to come off the 40-man, so I doubt it. Crismatt more likely just polished off his cup of coffee and they will try to clear him through waivers.
Someone mentioned that Frasso hasn’t been moved to 60 day IL yet, so thought they would go that route and move Grove down as he has options. Crismatt was the other option. Looks like Dodgers just playing musical chairs. Lamet probably also gets DFA’d at some point as early as this week.
Well, it was Crismatt who got the plane ticket. Musical bullpen, a Friedman specialty.
Why do the Dodgers always seem to have around 25 guys with big league experience hanging around at AAA, just in case?
foresight
Lamet made one very forgettable appearance for the Sox last year and didn’t look much better with the Rockies prior to that. We’ll see if he lasts through the series with the Giants
Just a few more guys and they will have the Padres 2021 bullpen
He’ll be right back to being a CY caliber player now that he’s on the Dodgers. There guys always immediately turn their careers around in LA, I wonder why
Dodgers pitching is hurting so bad they are taking Padres cast offs like Crismatt and Lamet.
whatever makes you feel better
Pads Fans
Dodgers are on pace to win 108 with Buehler, Kershaw, May and Treinan on way
Giants are doing fine with Cobb and Ray on the way
Padres will be in WC mix but it is a little early to be casting stones
Pace after 6 games? ROTFLMFAO.
Crismatt and Lamet are awful.
Truth hurts doesn’t it?
truth is your knowledge of the Dodgers pitching depth is a joke. Neither Crismatt nor Lamet are long term pieces.
Mojo
In his defense, he is just trying to troll
what gave it away Manny?
Not sure. He may be that dumb.
That the Dodgers are forced to use them at ALL is a harsh truth about the Dodgers pitching staff. Your denial is rough.
Obviously you are if you think that them pitching for the Dodgers at all is not a really, really bad sign about the Dodger’s pitching staff.
I mean you cannot be THAT deep in denial to not see the truth right in front of you.
Or maybe Preller isn’t the genius that Padres fans try to make him out to be. Crismatt had a pretty solid Dodger debut yesterday.
I lament this decision!
Another miracle waiting to happen for the luckiest scumbags in baseball!
Relax Mickey. No one in the Dodger Organization is a scumbag.
Maybe just a couple of their minority owners (not Magic though). At least Bauer and Urias are gone.
The Dodgers spent over $1B and they are now picking up SD Padres castoffs to fill out their pitching rotation & bullpen.
Their pitching rotation is Glasnow, Miller, Yamamoto, Stone, and Paxton. Buehler and Kershaw are likely to take the latter two spots later in the season. Sheehan also likely to get some starts at some point. Knack provides further SP depth.
All they’re doing here is shuffling guys through the final spot in the bullpen.
Crismatt DFA
Who names their kid Dinelson?
Dinelfather & Dinelmother
Lamet was a Dodger killer before he got hurt. They could do nothing against him. I’m curious to see what he can still do.
He somehow made it through 2 mop-up innings with 0 ER but his stuff’s not great. A lot of hard contact right at people. Oh well, it was worth a shot.
