The Cubs have agreed to a minor league contract with veteran right-hander Dan Straily, reports Craig Mish of SportsGrid and the Miami Herald. Straily had recently signed on with the Long Island Ducks of the independent Atlantic League, but he’ll change course and instead return to affiliated ball on a non-guaranteed pact with one of his former clubs. The agreement between the two parties is still pending a physical.
The 35-year-old Straily has spent the past four season with the Lotte Giants of the Korea Baseball organization, although he also had a brief run with the Diamondbacks’ Triple-A club in 2022. His time in the KBO produced a 3.29 ERA in 503 innings, as Straily whiffed 23.4% of his opponents against an 8.4% walk rate. His 2023 season wasn’t his best, however; he posted a 4.37 ERA over the first half of the season before being cut loose.
Prior to that stretch of overseas success, Straily pitched eight seasons in the big leagues, splitting his time between the A’s, Marlins, Reds, Cubs, Orioles and Astros. He had a fair bit of success, albeit in inconsistent fashion. From 2016-17, Straily posted a 4.01 ERA with a 21.3% strikeout rate and 8.5% walk rate in 373 innings between Miami and Cincinnati. Overall, he has a lifetime 4.56 ERA in 803 1/3 big league frames.
The Cubs already have a fair bit of pitching depth, but they also have Justin Steele, Kyle Hendricks and Drew Smyly — who’s been working in a relief capacity this season — on the injured list. At the moment, the rotation includes Shota Imanaga, Jameson Taillon (who just returned from the IL himself), Javier Assad and Jordan Wicks. Ben Brown and Luke Little have also started games this season. Straily becomes the second notable veteran starter to join the Cubs organization on a minor league deal in recent weeks. Right-hander Julio Teheran also inked a minors pact with the Cubs after being cut loose by the Mets and is currently in the Triple-A rotation in Des Moines.
I completely forgot about Straily, last time I saw him was when he was with the Marlins back in ’17
I know a fairly recent Cy Young winner they could sign for the league minimum…
No
I totally agree. Signing him is no different than when we had Chapman in 2016..
Wouldn’t cost you Gleyber or anyone like him.
I’m sure Jake Arrieta or Dallas Keuchel would probably sign for that.
Zack Greinke or Bartolo Colon.
The 2 cases need to be resolved first
All the cases have already been resolved.
Meh. COVID Cy Young based on 11 starts four years ago. No thanks.
2.76 ERA in Japan last year
He wore out his welcome there, too. That’s why he’s in Mexico now.
Lying ^ just like the women
Better than every team’s fourth starter
Many Cleveland pitchers gave Bauer credit for helping them improve their game.
A lot of what started the “Bauer is a bad teammate” bs stems from him having his own trainer and training regime which is common place now. Nearly every pitcher (and player) have their own pitching coaches/trainers in the offseason and go to their own pitch lab. Prior to Bauer, teams didn’t even have pitch labs, now they are bragging points for organizations.
And people won’t stop talking about him throwing the ball over the fence when Francona came to take him out of the game in his last start as an Indian. Like, who the Hell cares?
You freaking Bauer obsessives are like a damn Amway cult
Reminds me more of a cult involving another criminal.
Cept Bauer’s no criminal
The Cubs have “plenty” of starting pitching, at least enough to make the bad press not worth it.
Manfred did an amazing job ruining Bauers reputation. Seriously, no charges, no law suit, no refusal to press charges, no out of court settlement but in the court of public opinion he is untouchable.
Seriously, rough intercourse is not a crime. The lemmings are chanting “he did and he did and he did” with no evidence, no proof, just saying “well manfred suspended him so…” like that is proof of anything?
Look, there was not even enough evidence to win a civil case! You don’t even have to prove a civil case, just that it was more likely than not and they couldn’t do it.
Bauer would have been so much better off allowing himself to be extorted and blackmailed. He refused and lost his job because of it. It’s absolutely ridiculous.
Why would he be league minimum?
His three year deal with the Dodgers has elapsed.
Because Bauer has stated that he is willing to play for the league minimum.
Someone else made the stupid comment that Bauer wore out his welcome in Japan which is why he is pitching in Mexico, that isn’t the case at all. He is pitching in Mexico because he wants to sign with a major league team this season. He wouldn’t be able to do that if he pitched in Japan.
That would explain it
He’s guilty in the only Court that matters. The Court of Public Opinion. If the owners get together and decide you’re out you’re out. He’s a PR nightmare nobody wants to bother with. He’s over but the fools will still bring his name up every time a P goes down. They’ll never learn.
He is reaping what he sowed.
But it’s not right. A con artist was allowed to ruin his career. Look at the example it’s setting for the rest of the league, if a woman blackmails you, you better pay because it’s cheaper than trying to clear your name and lose your career.
The fools are the people who think Bauer, a guy who never had any criminal charges filed against him, who had no civil liability held against him, should be out of baseball.
The other issue, that you brought up, is baseball’s responsibility for the public opinion. By suspending Bauer the length they did after their “investigation” it made him look 100% guilty of something he legally was not.
And im sorry if you disagree but look at how baseball has handled Franco… they haven’t issued any suspension against him while he is being investigated by authorities (the way it should be). If he is cleared of any wrong doing, do you think MLB will suspend him? Isn’t what Franco is accused of doing significantly worse?
Manfred took the opportunity to get rid of a torn in his side, Bauer regularly called out MLB for their hypocrisy so Manfred ruined Bauer, thinking he would at the very least face criminal or civil liability, he faced neither. But instead of people doing the right thing and demanding a guy that has zero evidence of wrong doing, be allowed back in the league, they do what you do and believe the bs. No matter how much of the bs is proven to be lies.
Again, there was not even a CIVIL case. All the liar had to do was prove it was more likely than not that Bauer did something and she couldn’t. She knew she had no case and withdrew because Bauer knew the facts and called her bluff.
No he isn’t. He got played by a con artist.
@Unclemike1526 That is called collusion and is expressly forbidden by the CBA.
You do know the Owners have their own meetings and have each other on speed dial right? I’m just wondering, How exactly are you going to prove collusion? Yeah that’s right. You’ll never be able to.
The MLBPA doesn’t have to *prove* collusion to subpoena all the records. They only need to be satisfied that it more likely than not happened. I think they’d find a lot more that the owners don’t want them to find than just blackballing Bauer.
You’re really not the sharpest knife in the drawer. Are you?
You’re a couple sandwiches short of a picnic, aren’t you?
@InsertWittyName Because he can’t get more than that.
Dan Straily just has a way of popping up every few years. Nice to see him still trucking.
Mommy why are people stupid and still talking about Trevor Bauer?
Because stupid people never learn junior.
Stupid to not want an exonerated guy who is better than every team’s fourth starter and is available for the league minimum right now?
Yeah stupid. You don’t see anybody making any offers do you? I guess that means nobody wants him. Hey why don’t you buy a team and sign him? C’mon pony up.
Work on your writing before dropping stupid on others. Thanks.
“Yeah stupid.”
If you say so.
“You don’t see anybody making any offers do you? I guess that means nobody wants him.”
Maybe that’s the problem.
“Hey why don’t you buy a team and sign him?”
Because I’m not a billionaire.
Exonerated*
*not actually exonerated
Yes actually exonerated
You do know that words have accepted meanings, right? And by no definition other than maybe Trevor Bauer’s own was he exonerated. Seriously yall are just so sad.
One accuser texts surfaced from her to friends detailing specific plans to set him up. Another accuser was indicted for felony fraud and extortion. The other 2 accusers never made it past the “accusation” stage. If that’s not exoneration, then what is?
By definition, to clear from accusation or blame, Bauer was in fact exonerated by a court of law.
There were no criminal charges filed, no civil case which pretty much means he is free of any accusation or blame by legal standards. The only people still accusing and blaming him are the MLB and fanatics.
The Journeyman is back!!
Who says you can’t go back?
Hoyer never met one of his pets he wouldn’t take back. Hoyer would sign Smyly if he had both of his arms shot off in a hunting accident.
A blast from the past.
11.75 ERA from 7 games after coming over from the Athletics as part of the package in the Samardzija-Hammel trade
