The Blue Jays concluded their season-opening 10-game road trip with an 8-3 loss today against the Yankees. Starter Bowden Francis lasted three innings, pitching well in the first two frames but then surrendering a Giancarlo Stanton grand slam as part of a five-run inning for New York. The Jays had their share of offensive chances but left 11 men on base and went 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position. Toronto’s .197 batting average with RISP is the third-lowest in baseball this season, as the Jays’ struggles at cashing in runners have seemingly continued (and even worsened) from 2023.
Some injury updates from the Blue Jays’ roster…
- Jordan Romano is set to throw a live batting practice session on Monday, manager John Schneider told Sportnet’s Shi Davidi (X link) and other reporters. The Jays closer started the season on the 15-day injured list due to elbow inflammation but has steadily been ramping up his work and looks to be heading towards a rehab assignment. The absences of Romano and Erik Swanson have left the bullpen short-handed, though Swanson could potentially be activated as early as Tuesday.
- Schneider also provided an update on Danny Jansen, who is facing pitches from a high-velocity machine as he work his way back from a small fracture in his right wrist. Jansen has yet to resume catching duties, though some consideration was given to the idea of Jansen catching a Single-A rehab outing today.
- With Jansen out, Brian Serven has been acting as the Blue Jays’ backup catcher, though Serven had a bit of an injury scare himself in Saturday’s game with the Yankees. As Davidi relates in another piece, X-rays were negative on Serven’s left hand after Anthony Volpe’s checked swing hit Serven’s glove on what appeared to be a third strike. (Volpe was awarded first base on a catcher’s interference call, leading Schneider to describe the unusual play as “almost like a loophole” in the interference rules.) Serven finished the game but said he couldn’t feel his left hand for the rest of the game. Alejandro Kirk was behind the plate today as Serven didn’t play, but if Serven also has to miss time due to his hand issue, the Jays might to go further down the depth chart. Isiah Kiner-Falefa is a former catcher could fill in as a backup in a pinch, and Payton Henry is catching at Triple-A but would need a spot created on the 40-man roster.
- Alek Manoah began a rehab assignment with a start at Single-A Dunedin today, with some rough results. As related by MLB.com’s Keegan Matheson, Manoah threw 58 pitches over 1 2/3 innings, allowing seven runs (six earned) while also hitting a batter and issuing four walks. Between this outing and a similarly shaky performance in his lone Spring Training performance, Manoah’s recovery from shoulder soreness is only part of the story as Manoah is still seemingly miles away from his pre-2023 form. An All-Star and a burgeoning ace in 2022, Manoah stumbled badly during a 2023 season that saw him battle severe control issues, deal with some injuries, and spend a good chunk of the year in the minors. It isn’t clear what the next step in Manoah’s rehab might be, as Matheson notes that today’s outing could delay the eventual plan to move Manoah’s rehab to Triple-A Buffalo.

2024 Manoah makes 2000 Roy Halladay look like…2011 Roy Halladay.

10 game opening road trip. That’s brutal scheduling.
Still in talks
Boston also had 10 game road trip to start the season.
Dorothy_Mantooth
And Boston’s 10 game road-trip was on the west coast too, which is usually tough on the players. Perhaps it was a good thing they started there as they haven’t necessarily acclimated to time zones yet in the regular season, so it may not have been as taxing as a mid-season west coast trip would be. Either way, you can’t be disappointed with a 7-3 road-trip even though they should be 9-1.

It also helps when you’re playing three games in Oakland. Great start that no one expected but let’s see where the club is in June. My worries continue to be team defense and getting length from the starters. While it’s April, I would have liked to see Houck go one more inning. By June the bullpen could be shot.

The tough part about going from the East to the West is about the back and forth. Staying out West isn’t any different than taking a road trip to the central.
East/West/East/West is the toughie. For a single series, West to East is worse.
Late finish game West, day game East would be brutal.
JoeBrady
Perhaps it was a good thing they started there as they haven’t necessarily acclimated

I agree. The trip happened before the long season starts to wear a team down. And it affects the way you use your players in ST.

Blue Jays Notes: Blue Jays team sucks.
Hey now
Manoah is looking more like an unathletic Rick Ankiel by the day. It’s amazing how someone can lose it so quickly and it’s gone forever.

Maybe the most glaring change of scenery candidate I could think of…

Jays fan here. The jays had more or less the same thing in aaron Sanchez. An elite prospect/young player after there first season and complete falling off there after. Apparently they turned down big offers for sanchez the year he got the era title, only to be a throw in for a derek fisher trade years later

Yup…right from the top….

Didn’t Manoah get torched like that in a rookie league game last year before they called him back up?

Yes.

Anybody get a chance to watch the finale of the Yankees jays series. How does angel Hernandez still have a job?
Gwynning
I’ve said this before, but I believe umps should be relegated to MiLB (and vice-versa)
TheHighCheese4Me
Angel should just retire. No need to relegate…

I had a reserved seat on a rocket for him pointed at the sun but there was an eclipse yesterday. Stupid moon.

MLB is afraid of a discrimination suit and yet he’s the one ump where there is overwhelming evidence of his incompetence. If not allowed under CBA rules, it would be worthwhile for the league to take a stand with the next negotiations.

Francis gets one or two more starts before he’s kicked to the pen and White takes over. Rodriguez might even be ready for the 26 man by then.
Ted
Mitch White isn’t clearly a better option, unfortunately.
NoSaint
@Ted
It might not come down to better options but roster management. White has no options and would have to pass through waivers before being sent to AAA. Francis has one option year remaining.

Catchers Interference is a very basic baseball rule….why is Schneider calling it “almost like a loophole” rule? Sounds like a cop out from a manager paid to know the rules…
His catcher has no business sticking his glove into the batters bat swing plane which is in fair ball territory not within the catchers box…..and the rule was created to reward the offense for the interference of the catchers glove preventing completion of the swing……
NoSaint
@rocky7
It looked like the ball was already squarely in the glove before the bat made contact.
damhikt
That was my first thought as well, but after thinking about it a bit, and watching the replay a few times I realized the problem is he caught it before the batter had a chance to hit it

Wonder what they will do with Guerrero. Bad body, bad defense 800 ops guy. Will want a lot of money because of 1985 counting stats. A 2-3 win player
Ted
The Jays in 2021 looked promising, but it isn’t just Guerrero that’s the issue. Toronto has never recovered from losing the 11 WAR that Teoscar Hernandez and Marcus Semien provided. The window on this core closed before it ever really opened, unfortunately.
martras
Sounds like Manoah probably has some mechanical issues to deal with to me. Can’t throw strikes. Hopefully, the Blue Jays can identify it. I’m sure they had plenty of suitors this past offseason. Strangely run club in Toronto based on their offseason.
NoSaint
@martras
“strange run club” is being quite generous
bestone
Completely agree on the Teoscar and Semien comment. For some reason, neither could be re-signed. Seems to be some past friction between Manoah and front office.
Despite having a high payroll, the Jays are horrible. It feels like the players don’t want to work for this front office. Needs to be fixed from the top down.
Why didn’t Chapman want to stay in Toronto for more money?
farscott
My wife and I were at Dunedin and got to see Romano’s session before the game as well as Manoah’s start. Romano looked great. Manoah looked very frustrated by the balls/strikes calls as several close ones did not go his way. One called strike was appealed by Lakeland and was determined to be a ball.
I am no pro, but Manoah’s start did not look good to me. He had trouble throwing strikes, but he said he was only looking for velocity, movement, and the lack of shoulder pain. Velocity was 93 mph per the scoreboard. Movement was there, but he gave up some hard hit balls.
Best part was Joey Votto was at the game and hung out with the fans in the stands. My wife got her picture with him as well as an autographed miniature batting helmet.

Jays need romano back bad

Jays have a 2.25 ERA in the 9th inning.

Cool yea jays dont need him
They have a 225 era after 9 games lol

Manoah is a mystery. How does someone go from young to cy yuk over nite?
DerekBellsMoistMoustache
It’s happened several times before. This is nothing new
Johnny utah
Not this bad, not overnite

Rick Ankiel had a spectacular meltdown in the 2000 NLDS game for St. Louis against Atlanta. He suddenly was unable to throw strikes and threw five wild pitches in one inning. He eventually became a decent outfielder but never successfully pitched in the majors again. That fast.
Johnny utah
Ankiel was never even close to being as talented as manoah
Alek nearly won cy young in only 2nd yr in majors
Manoah has zero chance at switching to hr hitting OF lol. Not with his diet haha
farscott
Not sure I agree as Anklel was 2nd in RoY in 2000. He was being heralded as a great talent. Part of what derailed him was the lofty expectations and his attempts to meet them. He started game 1 of the NLDS. and game 2 of the NLCS in 2000. He literally fell apart in the third inning of the former and never got out of the first inning of the latter.
Johnny utah
Either you’re a delusional cards fan or just plain delusional
Ankiel was fine, not bad
Nowhere close to being a cy young contender
Manoah was absolutely electric for 2 full seasons
Then completely broke down
DerekBellsMoistMoustache
Yes this bad, yes overnight.
