The White Sox recently received some good news on the injury front, as GM Chris Getz told reporters (including 670 The Score’s Bruce Levine) that the prognoses on injured hitters Luis Robert Jr. and Yoan Moncada aren’t quite as worrying as the club initially believed.
Per Getz, Robert may be able to return from the Grade 2 hip flexor strain that sent him to the injured list last week after just six weeks of rehab, while the club hopes Moncada can return from his adductor strain in late July. The news is surely relieving for White Sox fans, as Robert was reportedly at risk of missing multiple months due to his injury while Moncada was given an initial timeline for return of three to six months. Getz’s comments indicate that both players are on track to return at the earliest end of their projected timetables.
The injuries are yet another blow to a White Sox club that has started the season with a 2-12 record and appears destined for a second consecutive 100-loss season in 2024. While Chicago was never expected to be a serious postseason contender this season, Robert and Moncada were each shaping up to be rare bright spots for the club this year prior to their injuries. Robert is the face of the Sox franchise following the departures of Lucas Giolito and Dylan Cease in recent months and appeared poised to build upon a 2023 campaign that saw him slash .264/.315/.542 in 145 games, while Moncada was off to his best start in years after struggling with injuries in recent seasons. Through 11 games this year, the 28 year old was hitting a solid .282/.364/.410 with strong strikeout (22.7%) and walk (11.3%) figures.
Of course, it’s entirely possible both players will be able to pick up from where they left off upon rejoining the club later in the season. In the meantime, the White Sox are relying on Dominic Fletcher and Kevin Pillar in center field while Lenyn Sosa gets the lion’s share of playing time at the hot corner. Sosa moving off the bench to take up third base and Fletcher shifting from right field to center has also opened the door for the likes of Zach Remillard and Robbie Grossman to impact the club’s roster.
More from around the AL Central:
- Twins shortstop Carlos Correa hit the 10-day injured list yesterday with what was initially described as an oblique strain, but Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com noted last night that Minnesota later reclassified as a mild right intercostal strain following the results of an MRI. While a timeline for Correa’s return to action is not yet known, Park suggests that once could be announced at some point this week. The reclassification of Correa’s injury provides some optimism that he could return to action fairly quickly, as MLB.com notes that mild intercostal strains typically have a recovery time of two to three weeks. Even if the absence is a relatively short one, it’s an unfortunate turn of events for a Twins club that has already lost Royce Lewis to injury on the left side of its infield. Correa had gotten off to a hot start this season, slashing a strong .306/.432/.444 through 11 games this season prior to hitting the injured list.
- The Tigers provided an ominous update on the status of right-hander Sawyer Gipson-Long yesterday, with Evan Woodbery of MLive relaying comments from club manager A.J. Hinch. According to Hinch, the Tigers are getting “multiple opinions” on the righty’s arm after he reported tightness in his forearm last week. To that end, Gipson-Long has returned to Detroit to meet with the team’s doctors and will remain with the club while awaiting next steps. Gipson-Long was already on the injured list due to a groin strain, but an issue with his right arm is far more concerning for the long term. A lengthy absence would be unfortunate for the Tigers, as Gipson-Long impressed with a 2.70 ERA and 3.16 FIP in four starts down he stretch last season during his first big league cup of coffee.
Good Guys
Really need these guys to get healthy and be productive so they can be shipped out at the trade deadline.
Aiden Awe
Robert has zero to little value after that hip flexor injury, Eloy and yo-yo has zero value. Kopech, Wilson has trade value. Could also try to trade Flexen, Fedde, Soroka as well. I doubt all of them get traded.
mlb fan
“Robert has zero to little”…If Luis Robert comes back quickly he still has major value, maybe not what it was last year, but still good value. He’s a plus CF who can hit and those are quite rare. DH Jimenez however, is practically a lost cause and you’ll need a desperate team to move him for anything of value.
Aiden Awe
Nobody seems to want Robert last year. But the White Sox will ask for the Juan Soto deal if they choose to trade him. Getz has very little interest in trading him in the first place.
avenger65
Oh, poor misguided Aiden. Robert has a ton of trade value despite his inability to run successfully to 1b. Eloy is still one of their best hitters, for what it’s worth. And do you really believe the team will be able to trade Flexen, Fedde and Soroka? They’ve already been cast off from other teams. No one wants them, except for that club building wizard Getz. This team isn’t waiting to get better, to start hitting. They simply don’t”t have the ability to play better. What we’re seeing is a team at it’s peak and it’s pathetic Getz, as we already know, doesn’t know how to acquire talent. He’s simply following Reinsdorf’s brief: Don’t spend any money. Just fill those uniforms with any warm bodies you can find on the dfa list.
Yankee Clipper
Aiden: I understand your point, but think of this another way: Harrison Bader has never played a full season in MLB (unless you consider 2018 “full season” play); yet he has received another $10.5MM to play for the Mets, right after another injury-plagued season.
Robert is only 26 and had a full season last year, while also blasting 38 HRs. Moreover, his triple slash is much better than Bader’s, yielding a career 124 OPS+ versus Bader’s career 94 OPS+.
Given the comparison, I would think many suitors would be interested in Robert. Perhaps Getz would ask for too much, but no doubt he still has decent trade value, imho.
Aiden Awe
It seems to me that the White Sox want to keep him tbh. I understand what your saying though.
Oldguy58
The best news the White Sox could get is if mlb cancelled the remainder of the season. They have little talent and the talent they have can’t stay healthy, however that’s not why they’re bad. According to owner Jerry Reinsdorf the Sox could contend if the state builds them a new ballpark. Even though $50 million is still owed on their current park the state built for them. Dig deep Illinois help out the White Sox and help Jerry to be a good owner build him another ballpark give him $2 billion.
nrd1138
One really has to wonder if Reinsdorf is so spiteful he has purposefully put such a lame example of a MLB team on the field as sour grapes so he can get the city of Chicago to say no thanks so he can move for a deal with another city. I get it makes little sense, but so does ‘The Chairman’
Sportsfantatic
sorry with the roster they have they can play on the moon and still suck. Send them all to AAA and tear the stadium down move the team to mexico that bad.. Their 2 best Assets cant stay healthy not much of a farm system.. If they dont spend you are looking at a 5 yrs of losing till the farm gets loaded on draft picks
Aiden Awe
They are a minum 3 years away from competing.
Aiden Awe
lol.
avenger65
Sportfantatic: Just like the players they are “rebuilding” Getz doesn’t know how to pick good players. He wouldn’t know one of Ohtani say on his lap. He got garbage for Bummer – I mean, does Getz really think he got the better of AA? – what makes anyone think he’ll get anyone of value for Robert? Or will draft the right players? The Sox will be terrible for many years to come, until a new owner comes in and sweeps the FO out onto the street (Remember, guys . This is the South side. Be careful what street you cross).

Carlos Correa, supposedly 29 years old, has the body of a 69 year old man. It’s hard to believe someone could be that fragile at this age(he was barely moving when injured)without some other underlying, possibly unnatural reason. Maybe the rash of position player injuries will finally put a stop to fans railing and complaining about the pitch clock causing injuries.
CKinSTL
Talented but can’t stay healthy? He fits right in with Buxton, Royce Lewis and Kirilloff
This one belongs to the Reds
That contract will weigh like an anchor around a small market team’s neck.
solaris602
But the organization and fan base have been brainwashed to believe Correa’s contracts were a stroke of genius no matter what he ends up doing. Just sit there with a vacant look of contentment on your face and nod any time someone looks your way.
nrd1138
He is like the rest of these guys, no will to be better, to keep up their skill set, and be a better ballplayer (that is within MLB rules of course)… They seem to get their contracts and then stop trying, instead relying solely on their youthful talent instead of doing what it takes to keep up conditioning on their bodies. Are these guys coming into the clubhouse early to get worked on? Likely not. Are they doing more drills before and after games to ensure they are limber? Likely not, are they doing meaningful off season programs that the club endorses (not have their ‘personal trainer’ doing all of the work)? Likely not. The bigger issue is their orgs apparent lack of ‘want’ in that category as well.
Hotdog 2
Tigers need a lefty contact high batting average guy desperately
Motor City Beach Bum
It’s early yet and they have tons of lefties, they just are not hitting great yet. Tork seems to start slow. Keith, Canha, Carpenter, Kelly, Greene and the 3B combo have looked good enough so far. Baez is Baez unfortunately. If Meadows keeps hitting poorly they may need to shift Greene back to CF and either call up Malloy, Leonard or Bigbie for OF at bats or trade for an impact bat (which I doubt they will do this early if at all).
Too bad about Gipson-Long. He was good depth for the starting pitching.
JazzJazz
Poor Sawyer. But what do you expect from a dopey chick who hyphenates?!
Banix12
I will believe the injured White Sox prognoses when they are back on the field.
stymeedone
They will be back for the pennant race! Look out Central!
nrd1138
The Central does look out. Cause when they see the Sox on their schedule they know that they have some days where they can coast through a series.
User 2161944466
The White Sox have to be leading the league in transactions this year.
Melchez17
Are these the same Tiger doctors that chased Spencer Turnbull out of town?
Hotdog 2
He will have a 4.5 era by may
Motor City Beach Bum
Turnbull did that to himself. Not a team player.
stymeedone
It wasn’t the Doctors, it was Harris. He didn’t want to risk Turnbull winning a $2-3mm contract in arbitration. Not when Flaherty was available for $14MM.
tigerfan4ever
Just when I think you’ve made the stupidest comment, you’ve gone even stupider. This isn’t on Harris at all. It’s on Turnbull and the doctors. But, no, STYMEEDONE has the Harris hatred glasses on. You need therapy to get out from under the Harris Derangement Syndrome and go back to making logical, knowledgeable comments again. But it’ll never happen. You’re too far gone, STYMEEDONE!
For Love of the Game
Ungrateful Turnbull. He sucked up two years of salary, so almost $1.5 mill., rehabbing. Pulling that injury cr@p only after he was sent down was….wait for it…bush league.
tiger9
After Scott Boras told him he was hurt…
Off you go….wont miss you…
ChiSoxPain
Okay then… World Series watch back on!!
Yankee Clipper
Hey, look at the bright side….At least you’re not an A’s fan!
ChiSoxPain
Well, let’s just hope it doesn’t get to that point
avenger65
ChiSoxPain: The Sox will not only finish behind the A’s and Rockies, they WILL lose 120 games. That will be their only accomplishment this season.
ChiSoxPain
I don’t care about this team: Whether it’s 100 losses, 110 or 120… it’s a complete embarrassment. Yes, they absolutely look historically bad.
My concern is them moving because you know whenever Jerry kicks off, his kids will sell to the highest bidder. They won’t care if the buyer has any Chicago ties or not… could very well end up like an Oakland situation.
nrd1138
I wonder if this is why Herm Schneider retired from the Sox?
A bunch of prima donnas, getting their contracts and refusing to take care of themselves.. to get their conditioning in, to focus on keeping their bodies ready for games.. Too many of the same type of soft tissue injuries, and in the same locations. Tells me they are not doing enough of building their core, this could be remedied fairly easily by a competent conditioning staff and org, but we see what the Sox are not. Yes, it does fall on the player as well, but it falls on the org to show these guys it matters. to bench them if they refuse to go through programs. To get in early to work on those problem areas and stretch and be ready for the game. To closely monitor and enforce off season conditioning..
Herm was known as Dr Pain. The reason to not get hurt as you would wind up in his hands to rehab you and he would get guys ready. The guy helped get Bo Jackson on the field and ensured he could get on that field every day, he is the guy that worked with Ellis Burks to rejuvenate his career, and countless other players… Now these guys apparently view it as vacation when they have their 3 rd injury in the same location in a season.
avenger65
nrd1138: I agree with all of your suggestions. While you wish for much-needed help with conditioning, etc., please keep in mind that none of this will happen because Jerry doesn’t care. It’s as simple as that. Every time this bunch of rejects takes the field, it’s Reinsdorf spitting in the face of the fans. We want a competitive team. We want a GM that knows what he’s doing. If Reinsdorf cared, he would have gone through with interviewing qualified people. But Jerry doesn’t care. That’s why he gave the job to a lackey who wouldn’t bother jer with trivial matters like increasing the budget. Then again, who in their right mind would want to be the GM for an owner like reinsdorf? So, whenever you find yourself wishing for something better, just remember these words: JERRY DOESN’T CARE.
Sportsfantatic
Went to the White Sox game in the 9th fans were shouting SELL THE TEAM booing them it was very bad.. I can see why thoo. They played horrible 2 weak hits the whole game zero offense at all. Not like the Reds are a World Series team. The South Side deserves better!
Atlanta Jack
Jerry, it is time to swallow your pride and hire Ozzie like you should have before.last year.
avenger65
Atlanta: I would love to see Ozzie manage the Sox, but why should he when the GM is incompetent and the owner won’t put a dime into his team. The day of the Sox’ home opener, one local TV station sent a reporter to Sox Park. His report was about the two new items available at the concession stand. He even interviewed the woman in charge of concessions. Riveting, but what else was there to talk about?
Sportsfantatic
Riseindorf is 87 yrs old. Their were grumblings of him selling The Bulls it was ironic that when that happen MJ sold the Hornets got out of that. He just needs to sell a majority stake of The Bulls to MJ and someone else let them run it. Then sell some of the stock of the White Sox maybe Ozzie would be interested. Last i checked his family dont want much of the ownerships of those teams. Same goin on the Bears the McClaskys virginia dont want to sell the kids are trying to get her to sell one rumor was Bazos was interested and one rumor was he wanted To Tear Soldier Field down and Build a new Amazon Facility a big centeral one where it sits and find new home For The Bears in Chicago.. Just gotta love Chicago Sports
MPrck
The Tigers are hanging in there, but when will they start to move guys up or down ? Baez should have been player of the game Sunday, but it was Tork instead. Saturday was a nightmare sweep by the Twins. Everyone groaned when Holton came out, and then later when Klang come in, oh boy. Go Tigers !
Atlanta Jack
After today’s White Sox game manager Grifol will have a record of 63- 114 . This is simply not good enough to White Sox fans.
Aiden Awe
Yep.
The Saber-toothed Superfife
Greed seems to stop the Tigers from trading.high.on prospects.
The Brokenheart Kid
Even if Baby, Robert and Yoyo return sooner than first forecast, how long before each goes down with another big hurt? Time to move on from this triage trio.
MadSkillsUniversity
These two guys cannot even run to first base. SMH. Thankfully, we are done with sad face Moncada after this year and Eloy still cannot hit as a DH = or run. Their off season training should include running, not hitting. No other team in baseball has it’s only three hitters go out like this – EVERY YEAR! What a joke. Robert is always on the DL too. SMH
