The White Sox announced they’ve designated outfielder Peyton Burdick for assignment. The move creates a spot on the 40-man roster to accommodate Steven Wilson and Jairo Iriarte, both of whom were acquired in the Dylan Cease trade.
Chicago claimed Burdick off waivers from the Orioles earlier in camp. The right-handed hitter has gone from the Marlins to Baltimore and the Sox within the last five weeks. He could find himself on the move yet again. Chicago will trade him or place him on outright waivers within the next seven days.
A third-round pick by Miami in 2019, Burdick has plus raw power but significant swing-and-miss concerns. The Wright State product has seen brief MLB action in each of the last two seasons. He combined for a .200/.281/.368 line over 46 games, striking out at a 38.1% clip. Burdick spent the bulk of last year in Triple-A. He connected on 24 homers and stole 12 bases in 492 trips to the plate, yet he went down on strikes nearly 37% of the time. Burdick finished the season with a .219/.327/.448 slash at the top minor league level.
The Sox gave him a brief look this spring. He started 1-15 before being optioned to minor league camp. He still has two minor league options remaining, so another team could stash him in Triple-A as a power-hitting depth player if they’re willing to carry him on the 40-man roster.
Fair trade in both directions, Getz timed it fine
Thank goodness for your sound logic. Outside of expert columnists just about everyone else, whether it be on here, Twitter, Bleacher-Report, or The Athletic is preparing to tar and feather Getz.
With that said, I’m really excited about Thorpe. They obviously coveted him before the Yankees sent him to SD in the Soto trade. Getz got his man and some other nice pieces. Zavala could be a beast someday, once he grows into his frame.
People are really panning it?! I haven’t read much yet. I thought it was an amazing return.
The actual experts like it, but the people that wish they were experts think we should’ve either held out for prospects in their top 3 or held onto Cease until the deadline.
I like the deal. My Dad always said it best, “You can never have enough pitching”. Would I have liked more players outside thar position? Sure, but Zavala will be worth the wait and I’m standing by that. Getting another reliever to throw into the fray doesn’t hurt. Iriarte and Thorpe will be staples of the rotation.
People are seriously panning the Cease trade??? That was a solid trade for both sides, people are just..
Chicago meatballs? Yes, yes they are.
What about Peyton Babydick?
It’s Burdick. Your mind seems to be on something else.
I’ve contacted the FBI.
Someone’s triggered by Burdick’s brother, Peyton Babydick.
We don’t talk about him. A child born with a different last name? The family could never explain it to the neighbors.
One has a baby shaped member and the other like a bird. It’s simple.
How do you know these things?
I’ve contacted the FBI, again.
I’m the neighbor and your mom told me all about you Peyton.
You have some questionable choices in conversation topics. Asking your neighbor about their child’s junk.
Third call to the FBI made. Their file on you must be multiple volumes.
3 prospects that appear either in Baseball America or Fangraphs Top 100 lists and a quality MLB reliever?
I would say that’s an outstanding return.
Exactly. I just don’t get why people are crying over it. The Yanks weren’t willing to part with either of Jones or Domínguez. Getz pivoted appropriately.
People get too caught up with getting the elite top prospect from an organization. Getz did well be here by getting three top 10 prospects from a fairly deep Padres farm system. Get a fairly solid return now and avoid any risk of injury derailing any return.
For me, the Quintana trade continues to pay off.
Chicago got a good haul for him especially Zavala. I’m just wondering what Baltimore offered that they turned down.
Balt reportedly offered the same deal as Burnes rental, but with 1 added player (likely low end filler). WSox needed to get either a high floor everyday near ready position player or near ready high floor starter as the headliner. What they did not get from Balt (Westburg) they got in form of an arm (Thorpe).
Ortiz fits high floor everyday starter and Hall is a high floor starter. I think the Sox wanted one of their next-gen starters that Baltimore doesn’t want to give up.
Ortiz is a nice swiss army knife. WSox wanted Westburg instead of him as the headliner. Hall is a project lefty starter who didn’t want to be a reliever in much the same way Crochet wants to be a starter for WSox instead of bullpen.
It is a massive rebuild. Utility players and more likely than not bullpen arms is not what they were going to want out of its trade chip.
Thorpe is a good command starter by training….unlike Hall or Crochet experiments going on now. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
They wanted Thorpe type or a Westburg as the main prize
Westburg is gonna be a beast. He gets forgotten.
I think Ortiz will be an above major league shortstop. Defense off the chart and a 110 OPS+ hitter.
Hall at worse a closer.
Also Thorpe needs to be added to 4o man.
I think that may depend on if they actually sign Lorenzen or not. It might be best to start Thorpe in AAA to let him get acclimated.
No rush on Thorpe. He can keep developing in the minors and be joined by Crochet who wants to stretch out/prove he can start.
WSox can bargain hunt for a cheap vet to start that good teams won’t settle on.
I think it was a good swap. I was hopeful of getting players who aren’t far off from contributing and that’s what they got. I honestly think Getz has done a decent job so far, at least on paper.
There’s No Place for Peyton in Chicago
Unless you’re Walter
