Every spring at MLBTR, we publish a list of players who are out of minor league options and cannot be sent to the minor leagues without first clearing outright waivers. Option status is particularly relevant as teams set their rosters prior to Opening Day. A lack of minor league options is often a key reason a certain player will make the roster over another who had a superior spring performance, and it’s a frequent factor in March trades.
The following is a list of all 40-man players throughout the league with fewer than five years of service time — players with more than five years of service can refuse an optional assignment — and no minor league options remaining. We’ve included players who have signed extensions or multi-year deals, even though they’re often less likely to be optioned.

So I guess Jay Groome does qualify for a fourth option year. There was never an article on it like there was for Forrest Whitley or Alex Faedo yet the reasons given for why they qualified for fourth option years all seemed to apply to Groome as well.
Brew’88
I wonder what the Pads will do with Avila, Patino and Kolek? I didn’t think Kolek would make it but he’s looked sharp.
DarkSide830
Apparently he was already optioned
Deleted Userr
I’m aware
5TUNT1N
I believe Ramon Laureano was also subject to an extra year, was it the ped suspension?
Simm
If memory serves isn’t morejon out of options as well? The padres also have Estrada in camp, I don’t believe he has any options left either.
CNichols
According to Fangraphs roster resource Estrada still has 2 options and Morejon has 1. Them being able to be optioned really helps with bullpen depth.
It’s a bummer that Avila hasn’t looked good this spring. I feel like he would have been good trade bait but with no options and him not looking great I’m not sure what value he really carries.
Brew’88
Avila seems to have reverted back to his AAA performance level, which wasn’t good.
Digdugler
That Mitch White trade was so absurd and unnecessary.
thebudlightknight
To be fair the Dodgers haven’t received any big league production from it yet. It could still end up that Mitch White is the only player involved with any major league production
Canuckleball
Moises Brito is still only 21 years old which means as a pitcher, he’s practically still an infant. Nick Frasso will miss this whole season due to shoulder surgery (which is obviously troubling) but was ranked as the #2 prospect in the Dodgers system. If not for the shoulder thing, he could well have been making his MLB debut this year. There’s a decent chance he’s in the majors some time next year.
Jury’s still out on this one.
Murphy NFLD
I was big on Frasso soon at they drafted him. I was also upset they let Ryan Noda go for nothing aswell. Im not saying Noda will ever hit 40HRs or be a lineup anchor. Bit a guy with 20+HR power LHH and geta on nase like that god dang. Even if he bats 9th to turn the lineup over or 6th to get on base and let the 7/8/9 guys drive him in
Murphy NFLD
What are 2-4 jays prospect in the last 20 yrs you liked. Right or wrong. I was Dam Palmegiani to wing the 3B job but that aint happening. That IKF deal looks even worse now aswell
Canuckleball
Don’t really follow the minors that closely. Feels like so many Jays kids flame out that hardly seems worth it to learn their names.
Sad to se Noda go, but it was for Stripling who was pretty effective for us so can’t complain too much.
That IKF signing will forever make no sense unless he learns to hit all of a sudden. Kinda hoping maybe Orelvis Martinez gets hot at AAA and gets brought up for 3rd. Either that or Schneider, Biggio, or Espinal plays well enough to get regular time at 3rd.
Biggio looked particularly good last year at 3rd.
mlbdodgerfan2015
Dodgers sold high on White, who reminded me of a poor man’s Stripling. Never fully trusted those guys even though they saw some success at times with the Dodgers. We’ll see about Frasso. Great trade on paper until he got hurt. Until he actually does something at the MLB level it’s all potential upside.
Smacky
This list is precisely why the Dodgers traded him. The Dodgers shuffle pitchers between the MLB team and their Oklahoma team. They couldn’t play that game with White b/c he can just elect free agency.
It’s the same reason the Braves did all those weird multi-player trades. They wanted to restock optionable relievers and get something for players they were going to probably lose for nothing.
Gomez Toth
I note also that Toronto has had a long history of, let’s call it underwhelming whole-player development. Many good players have come through their system, and not just men currently on the MLB team (e.g., Jason Werth, Orlando Hudson, Alex Rios, et alia). But their development always came, IMO, within an environment in which trying to win games was de-emphasized. If a player isn’t infused with the mentality to, you know, actual try to win the game, they can’t be expected to develop as a whole player. I think that “philosophy” might still be in place, and that White, who received a big does of it last year in the Toronto system might, at 29 yo, be challenged to snap out of it, so to speak. Or, of course, LAD might have fully known what they had, or didn’t have.
its_happening
Gomez roughly 20 years the Jays had the most MLB draft & developed players in baseball. Meaning they produced the most MLB players. That means at one time they had a strong development system in-place, bottom to top.
Then Rogers bought the team, brought in Moneyball-lite in Ricciardi and dumped a bunch of scouts.
its_happening
How dare you besmirch the good name of the “big get” at the 2022 trade deadline. Jays only seem to land the big fish when they’re well behind the last wild card spot like 2021 with Berrios and Brad Hand, who might’ve been with the team a handful of games.
Unclemike1526
Everybody has made the Cubs already except Almonte. The Cubs will never get Amaya through waivers so he’s probably going North no matter what. At least this year. Hopefully Almonte either gets claimed on waivers or they make a deal to lose 2 million dollars. Works for me.
acoss13
Almonte was just a piece to get Michael Busch I believe. But, yes everyone else is making the team no doubt.
Unclemike1526
By the time ST is over and the pitcher injuries grow, I’m fairly certain that Almonte will get grabbed. He has a high end arm and someone will take a chance. The Dodgers figured earlier he wouldn’t get claimed and they’d eat 2 million bucks. I’m not sure Wisdom or Madrigal would get claimed but I’d like to think so. Every few million the Cubs can save will help later. I doubt more and more that anyone will trade for Smyly, Wisdom or Madrigal. They all have warts.
acoss13
Yep I agree someone will pick up Almonte since pitching is always a need and he has high upside.
Smyly, Wisdom and Madrigal all have various levels of value. Maybe Wisdom is the least valuable of that trio, but he has pop and can play 3B and 1B, as much as I rail on him, he’s got value.
steelehere83
The Dodgers also aren’t big fans of players that don’t options. There are twelve former Dodgers on this list.
Drafted or signed as an amateur by the Dodgers
Brock Stewart
Luke Raley
Keibert Ruiz

Zach McKInstry

Unclemike1526
I believe every team is a big fan of pitchers with options. It’s the new MLB currency being able to shuttle guys back and forth without exposing them to waivers. It’s the Gold standard in baseball right now. 40 man spots and options are what makes a good team tick.
mlbdodgerfan2015
One more, Garrett Cleavinger. A lot of former Dodgers, indeed.
Ignorant Son-of-a-b
Uncle Mike, off-topic-, but had a question about Cubs/White Sox fans. Is their any sort of Chicago fan that is equally as exuberant about both teams…or is that impossible?? Either through social shaming or strictly by where one grows up in Chicago, do you have to be one or the other?? I never considered before who I would root for if my hometown happened to have two teams. Just curious…thanks!
Unclemike1526
Most Chicagoans will tell you that you have to pick one or the other. I on the other hand root for both teams. I learned a long time ago that it’s pointless to hate on one or the other. It’s just right now it’s hard for me to get excited about the Sox. They had a good young mostly Latin team 4 years ago and a good manager in Renteria. Then Reinsdorf decided to get involved and brought in a 80 year old lush to manage the team into the ground. Right now the Cubs are doing things the right way building from the ground up. Most of these so called experts who rank on the Cubs have never seen any of them play. I got the MLB package with the Minors and watched a ton of games. Callis and friends are basically clueless. Anyway I root for both, But Reinsdorf makes it hard to be excited right now. Where as Ricketts is building what could be a dynasty soon. Hope that answers your question. 2 Championships in like 200 years, I’m 67 and my dad died without ever seeing one so I’m not picky.
Wheeler Dealer
I really hope they trade Wisdom and Madrigal
Macbeth
I’m surprised but not that Adell hasn’t been moved somewhere else similarly to how Kelenic was. JK showed some actual swing last year where Adell hasn’t at all but I feel he has something in the tank but just not with the Angels.
kellin
No surprise. You answered your own thought with the JK showing skills and Adell not being able to handle major league pitching. He’s still not showing them in spring training, so we’ll see what happens.
Macbeth
I mean, it’s not like the Angels are doing anything and they can carry him on the active roster if they wanted to.
But if he was available I wonder how much interest he might receive.
D-Nice
I’m sure he’s (Adell) been available. I remember reading here over the winter about him being available. Especially once they signed Hicks to go with Ward and Moniak. And whoever else is in their OF picture. They’re probably giving him one last look this spring.
User 4223176798
So there it is – the Giants’ solution. The waiver wire for pitching help.
bag o ballz
wth are you talking about? just because someone is out of options it doesn’t mean they are DFAd
guilderc2000
Some of the arms on this list will not make the 26 man roster. When they get optioned, they’ll be exposed to waivers, because they’re out of options. That’s what he’s talking about bag o.
bag o ballz
yeah but that also makes no sense – why would you claim a guy who doesn’t look good when if you aren’t going to sign a big arm – you got guys like black that are already in the system and would require a roster spot. you are just trading someone you haven’t fully evaluated for someone you have
guilderc2000
Probably because Cobb and Ray will be back. It’d be smarter to plug the hole(s) with cheap veterans off the waiver wire until they return than it would be to start the service time clock on a guy like Black, just to send him back down.
bag o ballz
but why not start the service clock if you think you are going to send him back down at some point – it’s not like the service clock accrues once he gets sent back – you are giving him time at the front rather than the back of the season and if he sticks – he sticks
guilderc2000
And what if he doesn’t stick? What if he gets absolutely shelled, because he isn’t ready? Now his service time started and you sent him back down where he should’ve been all along, while simultaneously putting a dent in his confidence. Let the waiver wire vets get shelled, don’t start his service time, and DFA/claim as needed. A rotating door at the backend of the 40 man can be useful, anyways.
D-Nice
Guys play like crap one place and excel in another all the time. JD Martinez with Detroit is a good example, but there’s many. Sometimes different coaches find things, etc. Martinez couldn’t hit with Houston. Then came to Detroit and, well, you know.
TrillionaireTeamOperator
I think Rortvedt has high upside and I wish there was a spot for him, but I also get that Austin Wells is likely the future and a far better bet/overall player.
I just want a catcher with 10+ HR power who will hit over .220 and can call and frame at average or slightly above average quality. Is that too much to ask for?
leftcoaster
Joey Bart?
Tom the ray fan
I mean yeah…
NoSaint
@TrillionaireTeamOperator
You’re kinda asking for a near starting catcher.
Yankee Clipper
It’s interesting to me that Jahmai Jones is listed as a DH here. That’s probably the one position he *wont see* with the Yanks due to Stanton, Judge, DJ, and Soto all rotating through.
Plus, he’s been a IFer on pretty much every place he’s worked, if I’m not mistaken.
MLB Fanatic
If he’s DH’ing, they’re in trouble.
melfman1
I’m honestly expecting him to be traded at any moment, which is why he is starting so much this Spring (in addition to Trevino’s injury). If his injury extends to opening day, that might be Ben’s best chance to actually make the roster.
LordD99
A bit surprised the Yankees weren’t granted another option on Rortvedt based on his time missed during to injuries. The Yankees will probably try to slip him through waivers at the very end of camp when other teams rosters are mostly set, but I can see him being claimed since he’s regarded as a high-end pitch framer. That’s a skill that teams value from their second catcher. There’s also the possibility the Yankees roster him and send Wells down for some more seasoning. We’ll have a better idea what they’re planning when Trevino returns from injury in the next week. If Rortvedt continues to catch, it may be a sign they plan to keep him.
Yankee Clipper
I concur with all your points. I could easily see the Yanks carrying him because Wells has options. But, if history is any indicator, he will be injured at some point anyway. These super muscular guys just don’t last well without PEDs for healing. Throw in the extra stress of catching and it’s a recipe for treated injuries.
Jamerzz
Isn’t Pierce Johnson of ATL on a guaranteed multi-year deal?
onbase_plus_hugging
Joey Bart and JD Davis might not have a *ton* of trade value, but I do wonder what the Giants might be able to get by potentially packaging them together, perhaps with a surplus pitching prospect thrown in.
jekporkins
You read my mind sir. I am assuming Zaidi is thinking the same thing to get an innings eater on an overpriced salary.
stymeedone
I’m guessing together they would return less than JD Davis by himself.
5TUNT1N
Sty I see your point but let’s not forget the amount of bad catchers getting a couple million dollars. Bart is equal likely and costs far less. This guy needs another opportunity having a good spring!
Ignorant Son-of-a-b
Mariners in need of a third baseman. And Zaidi-Dipoto have traded with each other many times. Maybe something can be worked out.
D Backs GM
I thought Corbin Martin & Luis Frias for Dbacks should be on the list?
highheat
Some guys are given a fourth option year due to missing too much time, that would seem to be the case here.
TJG88
Thought Otto Lopez (SF), JB Bukauskas (MIL), and Max Kranick (NYM) were also OOO – I guess not…
gravel
Otto Lopez has one option left. mlbtraderumors.com/2024/02/giants-acquire-otto-lop…
rxbrgr
Interesting to see Rule 5 guys on this list (for what seems to be the first iteration they’ve been included). Technically they’re not “out of options”
melfman1
True, but they can’t be sent to the minors either. So, the end result is the same… either they make the 26 man roster or the team risks losing them.
TJG88
Service time graduates: Jeff Hoffman, Ryan Borucki, Trevor Richards, Clay Holmes, Paul Sewald…
Also, I could’ve sworn Andy Ibanez was OOO last year?
BannedMarlinsFanBase
On the Marlins side, it kind of says that Brujan and Nick Gordon will make the roster, and with Berti a sure thing (unless unexpected occurence like an injury), the Marlins position player situation is already settled.
Now with the position player situation settled, Avi Garcia needs to see what signing Trey Mancini is about. Yep…If Avi shows he’s not showing up this year, Trey is getting the spot. Again, as said before, we are on the Avi Garcia DFA Watch.
As for JYT Chargois, he knows what he needs to do to keep his role on the team and the roster. Marlins need RHP relievers to compliment the lefty relievers. Anthony Bender is back, so that makes two with a couple of more spots to fill in the bullpen.
acoss13
Would the Marlins front office really DFA Avi Garcia this season? That’s still a bit of money to eat. Then again the guy has been absolutely terrible for you guys, that at one point he’s just holding up a roster spot.
BannedMarlinsFanBase
I think so. If the Marlins weren’t a team coming back from a Playoff season and trying to be a Playoff team again, they would keep him. But since they are a team looking to be back in the Playoffs again, he is certainly in a position to be DFA’d because they need for someone to produce the numbers they expected from him with his roster spot. The second the Trey Mancini signing was announced, I figured that Trey or Troy Johnston were in position to take the spot from him due to potential better performance and at a low cost that doesn’t spike up the money already that has to be paid to Garcia whether he’s on the roster or not.
acoss13
Trey Mancini didn’t do a whole lot with the Cubs but he’s probably a better option than Avi. Your explanation makes sense now. But hopefully Avi remembers how to hit though.
BannedMarlinsFanBase
A lot of people hope Avi remembers how to hit…including Avi.
or
He gets back to using whatever he was using that got him the performance he needd to get his contract…assuming that MLB didn’t finally start testing for whatever it is.
acoss13
I watched Avi with the White Sox, and when he was with Brewers I saw him against the Cubs. It’s unbelievable to me how much he has regressed since joining the Marlins. When the Marlins signed him, I thought it was a great signing too. I really hope it’s not because of a lack of a certain “substance” for his downfall…
BannedMarlinsFanBase
Yeah, his regression is odd to me. It’s the type of downfall that’s similar to Chris Davis (although not as bad yet), Robinson Cano (although he was much older), or Fernando Tatis Sr.’s decline right after PED testing started and he didn’t get back to MLB caliber until he started seeing Dr. Anthony Galea.
I try to give guys the benefit of the doubt, but sometimes when you see something walk, nibble cheese, and squeak like a rat, it’s a freakin’ rat!
Avi always had off seasons the first year of contracts, but good years in his contract years. Now, he gets a 4-year deal with the Marlins, and he’s done nothing through the first two years, and looking like he won’t do anything this year, so we can expect a big year out of him in the final year of the contract, unless he’s worried about being out of baseball after a third straight bad year.
Rsox
I wouldn’t guarantee either a spot right now as Mancini is hitting .077 on the spring while Garcia is hitting a (slightly) worse .071. Neither one may end up breaking camp with the team if they are actually serious about contending
BannedMarlinsFanBase
Yep. It’s opening the door for a guy like Troy Johnston or other guys at other spots who can help the roster.
SonnySteele
I hope Jon Singleton makes it this year. Not necessarily with the Astros though.
another54pctjoke
is this the year the mariners finally give up on taylor trammell?
Jarred Kelenic's Beer Can
His swing is so godawful that it amazes me every time he runs into a hit. He hasn’t been very good since Double-A but through prospect hype and just the general lack of outfield depth have forced the Mariners to use him. If Kelenic hadn’t struggled out of the gate, if Kyle Lewis’s knee hadn’t blown out, if Haniger wasn’t made of glass bones and paper skin…you get the picture. Trammell was interesting as a prospect because he had enough tools to maybe become a decent 4th OF if he could just hit the ball, but it hasn’t happened and probably never will.
The Saber-toothed Superfife
I always though Joey “Where’d he go?” Wentz was a pretty good starter. He came up very early, after Al got him, to cover for injuries. They should have traded him to someplace where he can flourish. Can’t give up a hr every 4 innings as a reliever.
That’s the bad thing about these cookie cutter GMs. No innovation, no outside of the box solutions. No consideration for the players. That roster churn stuff going on in Detroit is a load of bull testicle tacos. What are you doing to the guys? Did you not have your targets already? Did you not have your guys that you have developed and have confidence in? Guys should land where they can have a career, not get f’d around. It really doesn’t help the team that much, unless he really is your guy that you had your eye on and plan to stick with.
Are the Illiches going broke or something?
Jubilation
There is nothing wrong with roster churn at the bottom of the 40 man roster.
The Saber-toothed Superfife
There are many things wrong with it. It reveals a poor team building philosophy as well. There are exceptions, of course.
The Saber-toothed Superfife
The Illiches must be going broke or something.
highheat
@Saber-toothed
There are 26 spots on an Active Roster, so only 14 more spots occupied by MiLB players on a 40-Man Roster. Unless an injured player is moved to the 60-day IL (which doesn’t exist during the Offseason), they also occupy a spot on the 40-Man.
Pitchers are always one bad tweak away from being lost for extended periods of time, so it’s important to have a stockpile of extra arms on the farm.
Once an injured player comes off of the 60-day IL (either by recovering from injury or entering the Offseason) they need to be added back to the 40-Man; which means that there need to be accompanying cuts.
All of those things are true for every team, and it’s very rare that a club can get through an entire season with only 40 names. There is very little wrong with the backend of the 40-Man being fluid.
The Saber-toothed Superfife
“The churn” is to collect extra guys, hoping eventually you will be the team to pass them through waivers, even though you really don’t expect them to stick on the 40, right?
I’m sure guys appreciate being picked up, but it’s not hard to see the problem with that for the player or the quality (confidence by management) of a team utilizing those types of efforts. I’m not saying it’s a bad idea, there are gems.
For ten tears into a rebuild? The opposite should be happening. It appears.to be cookie cutter action, just doing it because. I mean there is opportunity vs flailing. Grasping for straws and economizing and calling it “depth” is what it looks vs just kicking commie butt like any good red blooded American should.
It’s a good idea.but….
In this day and age there is no reason to be eating “Rocky Mountain Oysters”. Really, it’s idiotic and even the paletos and campensinos pass, or do it just to laugh at someone.
The Illiches must be going broke.
The Saber-toothed Superfife
Since my previous post was too expressive for the gentle tastes of the casual MLBTR reader, let me point out the minor league options young Tiger starting pitchers have, the previous rush to being them up early = to create hype = and ask anyone who cares
to consider what kind of depth might the Tigers have, if only the Illiches weren’t going broke.
I only say that because I think the Tigers have a lot of good players with value but they all won’t fit if they are getting jammed up by a lack of decisiveness. We need a Napoleon to grab the Central crown out of the gutter.
Best Tiger team in years.
Thank you for your tolerance.

I apologize. I thought the previous post had been removed.

Looks like at least half the bullpen the Mets will begin the season with are out of options.
A necessarily long leash is not to the team’s overall benefit, given how marginal all these talents are.
SgtGrumbles
What difference does it make when they come in down 3+ runs.

Orioles predictions. I’ll do on a 1-10 scale with 10 as a definite yes.
Mike Baumann, RP 8
Cole Irvin, SP 10
Jorge Mateo, SS 9
Nick Maton, 3B 2
Ryan McKenna, RF 5
Tyler Nevin, 1B 2
Cionel Perez, RP 10
Ramon Urias, 3B 9
Jacob Webb, RP 8
Baumann can be good just not consistent. Feels like he will be first RPcut if he struggles during season.
Irwin should be the 5th starter and would revert to bullpen if and when the other 2 make it back.
Mateo is very versitile and has +++ speed. He could be traded though.
Maton yeah right. AAA depth
McKenna is a true 4th OF, but way to far behind on depth chart. Won’t make it through waivers.
Nevin see Maton.
Perez is a lock.
Urias see Mateo.
Webb is solid, but I can see him cut if he struggles.
C Yards Jeff
McKenna. Seems to me to be an Orioles FO & mgr favorite. 5 is a good guestimate there. Personally, I’ve been ready to move on from him since 2022. Baffling to me that he’s still around. But then again, what the heck do I know!
CardsFan57
As a Cardinal fan, JoJo Romero looks like guy who doesn’t need more options. He looks like a valuable bullpen arm. The other guy won’t be missed if he chooses to leave the organization.

Does a rehab assignment count as going back to the minors? Or is that the only way a player from this list is able to go to triple a?

That doesn’t count as being optioned, but there’s a strict time limit on how long they can be on a rehab assignment

Reds really need to move on from Barrero and Fairchild.

Looks like a pretty decent AAAA team.

Cardinals only really have JoJo with this issue because Fernandez is a rule 5 pick, plus JoJo has been on our roster the past two years and showed good promise in both middle relief and the closer role in 2023 so I’m not concerned

So many of these are entrenched with their teams you wouldn’t even think of sending them down anyway.

With Justin Steele out of options with the Cubs even thou he’s probably their Ace, and with the Mets not going anywhere this year, we should trade Alonso, Marte and Quintana ( Mets giving $20-$30 mil) to offset the $$ to the Cubs for Steele, Morel, Ben Brown and Wisdom. The Mets can put Vientos at 1b, Morel or Wisdom at 3b with the other at DH, sent Baty back to AA. The Mets can add those 2 pitchers in the rotation for years to come. Sign Bauer and their rotation can be Bauer, Steele, Severino, Manae and Houser until Senga comes back, than it’ll be Senga, Steele, Bauer, Severino and Manae moving Houser to the bullpen. Gilbert or DJ Stewart can take over RF for Marte. Lineup: Nimmo, Bader, Lindor, Wisdom, Morel, Alvarez, McNeil, Vientos and Gilbert or Stewart.

It takes more than one team wanting to trade for a trade to be accomplished; I don’t see how the Cubs want to make that trade
