The Orioles have claimed outfielder Peyton Burdick off of waivers from the White Sox, the team announced. He has been optioned to minor league camp. Baltimore had an open spot on the 40-man roster, so no corresponding move was necessary.
Burdick first joined the Orioles in February, but they designated him for assignment five days later upon trading for reliever Kaleb Ort. The White Sox scooped up the outfielder but DFA’d him themselves following the Dylan Cease trade, as they needed to make room for both Jairo Iriarte and Steven Wilson on the 40-man roster.
The Marlins selected Burdick in the third round of the 2019 draft, and he made his MLB debut with Miami three years later. Across 46 games in 2022 and ’23, the righty batter hit .200/.281/.368 with five home runs, two stolen bases, and -0.4 FanGraphs WAR. Power was his carrying tool throughout college and the minors, but he has yet to tap into his raw power at the major league level. Instead, he has demonstrated a strong proclivity for strikeouts, striking out in more than one-third of his plate appearances and whiffing on more than one-third of his swings.
Burdick’s performance this spring didn’t help his chances with the White Sox; he has gone 1-for-14 with five strikeouts, no walks, and one hit-by-pitch. However, the Orioles clearly see something they like in the 27-year-old. Baltimore has plenty of outfield depth on the roster, but Burdick offers the team another right-handed bat and another option for the big league bench if the Orioles would rather their more promising youngsters get everyday playing time at Triple-A.

The team that once employed Bordick now has Burdick

Wow.. great detective work
Thornton Mellon
The same team has also had not just one but two fat Sid’s.

I would delete your first word “nice” and then concur

They must like something about him (idk what it is) since this is their second time claiming him despite the OF being pretty full
just_thinkin
They don’t really have any right handed outfielders for a possible bench role other than McKenna, who is out of options and may get traded or DFAd. Burdick offers some protection there and hit 24 bombs in AAA last year.
RedFraggle
Don’t need one. Hays and Santander (Switch hitter) are both capable of batting from the right. Mullins and Stowers/Cowser can be the lefties.
C Yards Jeff
Good point about McKenna as well as counter point about Hays and Santander. Interesting. Could somebody be on the move? Hays, maybe?
Nosferatu Zodd
I like Hays, but their are so many upgrades
Ra
Santander can’t play CF and Hays has slowed down to the point that he is not a viable Mullins backup if he goes on the IL for any length of time. Cowser isn’t a viable everyday CF either. So that leaves McKenna or Fabian/?Mateo?. Maybe they see Burdick as capable of handling the position defensively for a spell.

Hilarious file photo that was chosen for him, getting hit by a flubbed pop fly lol

I swear I’ve seen this headline before…

I’m not sure why they want him. Doesn’t even seem like a great “depth” piece. He’s 27 and shown who he is, I’d rather give some promising youngster the chance.
MacGromit
Log jam in the OF, org depth that they wouldn’t mind losing after using in a pinch midseason. They are thin on righty bats for the away games. Righties need extreme power against Walltimore at home. Hopefully they can sneak him through waivers at the end of ST when teams are full and less likely to make a claim. But the fact that he fell all the way to the O’s on this claim bodes well for the hopeful stash to Norfolk.
C Yards Jeff
“Walltimore”. What a beast! If you’re an agent repping a R side power stick, suggesting Baltimore to your client is a last option move?
FOmeOLS
When a player has no redeeming qualities, it is curious that a team has interest in him, especially when that team has a bewildering quantity of players, who do have redeeming qualities, and all of whom can play better.
So this move by Baltimore makes no sense.
Nosferatu Zodd
Unless they know something…
Ra
It’s called “organizational depth.”
Also, Burdick has good ISO.

I will never understand why these random below average players constantly get claimed by the same teams. They like them, but not that much, yet still don’t want to lose them.
Ra
See above.

Why are they claiming a guy, who, in the photo of this story, looks to be scared of catching a ball? He’s in the wrong sport.
Nosferatu Zodd
This OF situation is crazy. Stowers I honestly didn’t expect to be in the mix. He is forcing the issue. I really think a trade has to happen. I am thinking the Orioles will be taking 14 position players. 3 off days in first 12 will help the staff.
Just who will it be? We all assume the 7 infielders are set. If Mayo is ready then he is ready. I think unless Holliday gets hurt he has the 2B job.
The biggest problem is where they gonna get the ABs for everyone. Rutschman and whichever first baseman who ain’t on the field will get about 100 games between them at DH.
slimray
its a long season, they will find at bats for all of them.
Ra
Holliday has not played 2B next to Gunnar at SS in a single game this Spring. He’s going to AAA for a few months.
Nosferatu Zodd
I can’t think of any reason to send him to AAA, the old days of service time manipulation are over. He hit for average, power, and handle the D. He is showing hustle and not just expecting the job. Championship teams always have a few rookies because of the energy they give.
Ra
Service time manipulation is not over. The draft pick has not changed things in absolute terms.
If he were going to start year with the team, they would have him playing next to the Shortstop, Gunnar Henderson, in Spring games. Jax has played ZERO innings at 2B next to Gunnar. Near 0% chance Holliday starts the year in Baltimore.
No, “Championship teams always have a few rookies because of the energy they give.” is specious. Sounds smart, but not a valid claim. Championship teams play the guys who give them the best chance of winning.
Holliday needs more time at AAA, especially learning how to play 2B. He’s not supplanting Gunnar at SS because he is nowhere near as good defensively as Gunnar.
Ra
Don’t worry, Jax should be up in June,
