- Do you think it’s possible that the league begins to follow the Angels and Rangers footsteps and call up recent draft picks as soon as they show any signs of potential? Also, do you think it is at all possible that teams start to call up teenagers? (52:25)

Ohtani looks ether guilty or like a big dummy

Steve, when you start the conversation accusing Ohtani of an “about face” and have to be corrected by your colleague, perhaps you should have paused and re-considered your approach? At the conclusion of this podcast, you state “I’m not going to make assumptions”…. Goodness, this podcast simply perpetuated numerous innuendos and assumptions that have been circulating on this website and elsewhere for a week.
Darragh, passing on inflammatory comments that you have “heard on Twitter” that perpetuate unsubstantiated suspicion about this story is really not helpful. It’s certainly not journalism. Maybe that’s not what you’re pretending to do.
I guess I expected more from the paid staff on
this site. To make the kinds of observations and conflate conspiracy theories and other concerns you have about Ohtani, the Dodgers, etc. with the facts known to date seems very irresponsible to me.
I certainly understand that at various points in the podcast you both acknowledge that you don’t know an awful lot, that more facts are going to come out. Perhaps you should have remained focused on what is known?
Certainly there is a difference at this point between what Ohtani has said and what the interpreter has said. What has been made very clear by both Ohtani and his former interpreter is that Ohtani does not bet on sports. Numerous reporters have also interviewed former teammates of Ohtani, who say that he has never to their knowledge participated in betting, unlike other players. I guess those facts weren’t relevant?
This discussion, at best, came off as unprepared and unprofessional. At worst, it came off as a hit piece.
Very disappointing.

Face it.
Ohtani is guilty.
Everyone can see it, except Dodger fans.

Its fair to say that if and when he is formally accused and a trial takes place, you won’t be on the jury.
If he is convicted, I’ll be happy to acknowledge it.

Everyone is conjecturing on what they know to date. Ohtani has brought some of this on himself by being less than forthcoming. He could’ve elected to show every single transfer to the bookie, with the dates and amounts, and explained where he thinks the translator got his log-ins, how and why he wasn’t notified, and why his accountants never caught this.
He doesn’t have to do any of that, but then, I don’t have to believe him.

When it comes to Ohtani, he’ll be added to the investigation when/if necessary. A lot will probably hinge on whether or not Mizuhara had a power of attorney to act on Ohtani’s behalf in facilitating financial transactions, and I suspect Mizuhara did have the document. Without that power of attorney, I can’t imagine any financial institution even talking to Mizuhara, let alone allowing him to direct transactions so it would make sense.
Mizuhara isn’t going to accept an extra 20 years in federal prison for embezzlement to cover for Ohtani, and that’s what it really comes down to.
