It would be odd be odd but funny if Matt Chapman didn’t sign with the Cubs because he couldn’t have number 26.
rundmc1981
Is he against giving a Porsche for a number? He should be able to afford one, on layaway.
Logjammer D"Baggagecling
The number 26 is retired by Fergie Jenkins so he wouldn’t have gotten it in the first place. Evening he bought Fergie a car of his choice.

Billy Williams and every Cub fan take exception to such a stupid statement, Logjammer.
Logjammer D"Baggagecling
Damn it! Brain fart. I had just read a tweet from Fergie. Completely spaced it.
realsox
Pretty sure Jenkins wore number 31 with the Cubs, mike127.

Logjammer: I’m pretty sure Jenkins wore number 31 with the Cubs.

What are you talking about? Robertson and mahle will combine to make 10.5 mil this year thats probably a third of what the combo of hader and monty will make in 2024…that 10.5 likly had no impact on the non persuit of hader and monty..but hindsight is 20/20..texas did the best they could with the info they had at the time
Whyme
Lol Varsho at catcher smh. He’s the best defensive CF in the game.
Unclemike1525
Wow. Drugs on Sunday? You might need to water down the product.

Hey UncleMike, I know why you asked the question about Smylie. You’re thinking if they could move him, they could sign Minty w/o going over the luxury tax. Damn Ricketts. Cubs need a starter to lead the staff. He would be perfect. Instead, he’ll be wearing a Red Sox uni.
Unclemike1525
No I asked the question because I want the 11 million bucks to use at the deadline in case they need it and the Cubs don’t need another starter. They go 8 deep without Smyly. And I don’t want a crappy reliever around that makes more than any reliever we have. I hate guys who are in the way and Smyly is definitely in the way. Thank God the option for next year is mutual. And everybody needs to stop trying to saying the Cubs need a 3B. Like Mark shot his mouth off saying the Cubs need JD Davis. They don’t. They’ll be fine.

Is Snell getting squeezed? Or is his ask just ridiculous.
C Yards Jeff
I don’t think it’s about Snell specifically as much as it is about more and more teams shying away from long term deals for pitchers. Just too risky.
Fever Pitch Guy
Jeff – Assuming by longterm you mean more than 4 years, I can think of 9 massive longterm pitcher contracts all signed within the past 4 years … and 7 of them were within the past year. (I’m not even including Ohtani).
Cole
Yamamoto
deGrom
Glasnow
Rodon
Nola
Strasburg
Diaz
Hader
I think it’s more a case of teams getting fed up with the tactics of Boras, and too many big spending teams are already saddled with massive SP contracts.
I guarantee if the Yanks didn’t sign Rodon last year, Snell would already be wearing pinstripes.
I guarantee if the Rangers didn’t sign deGrom last year, Monty would already have re-signed with them.
It’s gonna be the same thing with position players eventually, once you have too many locked up in longterm contracts you simply can’t take on any more. We saw that with the Padres, they already had 3 relatively new mega-contracts with Tatis, Machado and Xander so they simply couldn’t afford to take on another one with Soto.
C Yards Jeff
FPG. Big spending teams are not going for a Snell type long term because they are all spent out. Point taken. As evident with speculation right here on MLBTR very recently that the Phillies are interested in a Snell type but short term.
And yes, long term to me is that 4 year mark. Cheers!

BArt and Davis to KC for Lyles
C Yards Jeff
11:39: hoping the Orioles start extending these young fellas. Further hoping focus being on position players more than SP rotation guys … roughly following the Braves lead here
