The Braves announced they’ve released veteran outfielder Jordan Luplow to pursue other opportunities. He’d been in camp as a non-roster player after signing a minor league pact in January.
Luplow is a right-handed hitting outfielder who’d been competing for a bench job in camp. Atlanta signed Adam Duvall to a $3MM pact this afternoon to play that role instead. Carrying both Duvall and Luplow would have been a bit redundant, so the Braves decided to let the latter get an early jump on his next opportunity.
The Duvall signing wasn’t a reflection of Luplow underperforming in camp. To the contrary, the well-traveled outfielder has posted impressive numbers this spring. He was off to a .280/.379/.560 start through 29 plate appearances. Luplow had collected two homers and a double among his seven hits. He walked four times against only five strikeouts. Yet the organization has a long history with Duvall, who lingered in free agency deep into the offseason despite hitting 21 homers with a .247/.303/.531 slash for the Red Sox a year ago. Adding him to the bench at such a modest price tag was something the front office didn’t want to pass up.
Luplow shouldn’t have any issue finding another minor league opportunity elsewhere. He has tallied more than 1000 trips to the plate over the past seven seasons between six teams. Luplow got into 39 MLB contests a year ago, hitting .208/.322/.325 between the Blue Jays and Twins.
While he has posted below-average numbers over the past two seasons, Luplow has a decent track record in favorable platoon situations. He has popped 33 home runs in 565 career plate appearances against left-handed pitching. Luplow has reached base at a .338 clip with a very strong .495 slugging mark versus southpaws. He hasn’t had anywhere near the same level of success against righty pitching, posting a .197/.287/.343 slash when matched with same-handed hurlers.
He’ll be leaving a thank you card in Duvall’s locker.
Cornball
The only opportunities left for justin to pursue start & end at the bus station. Exact change only please. Ahahaha!
Who is Justin?
Dude it’s the Riddler. What did you expect?
Listen, it starts with a J & ends in an N, with what they’re paying me you’re lucky to get that. Ahahaha!
You make the internet worse and I guess, in a way, that’s sort of impressive.
That’s funny, I’ve never heard that before, I guess in a way, thank you. Ahahaha!
Thought it was General Sherman making Georgia howl.
Duh
Not sure what Freddie has to do with this, but I’ll bite lol….Miss Freeman being here but he could’ve spared me those crocodile tears when he came back in 2022. If he wanted to stay in Atlanta he’d be here. He simply wanted to go to LA and i just wish everyone would’ve clearly stated that instead of the unnecessary drama both sides displayed.
Didnt Freddie agent get a offer/counter offer thet he didnt tell Freddie about. The braves thought thats our best we got no answer so lets move on. Didn’t freddie fire that agent amd aswell say he may have taken the deal
He gave the Braves a deadline to accept or reject his proposed contract offer, and the day that deadline was due they traded for Matt Olson…lol
I would rather have Matt Olson he wanted to be a Braves and signed for less money. Olson last year had one of the best Braves seasons ever.
This nerd liked Fredi González as manager and still spelled his first name wrong.
What a turd goblin.
I think Fredi G. had something that prevented him from learning.
I thought Russ Nixon managing was something else in the 80s. Then Fredi came along to prove some sort of point, that scientists will later learn from.
It’s possible to make a good living as a weakside platoon hitter who plays MLB-average outfield defense. I wish him the best.
Last time duvall was in atlanta i thought he was a reverse split guy. Had some issues with left handers but hit righties better.
I was actually referring to Luplow, but it fits Duvall as well.
I understood you were referring to luplow. It did not make a lot of sense to me that the braves dropped luplow as duvall and kelenic do poorly against left handers.
Duvall’s splits are super strange year to year. He had reverse splits in 2021 and 2023 and crushed RHP, but was better against LHP from 2019-2020 and in 2022.
Career wRC+ is 97 against RHP and 100 against LHP, so it kind of averages out with a lot of variance between years.
Let me guess, he’s either your BIL or he owes you money? Ahahaha!
Let me guess, you’re an a-hole.
Padres meet your new left-fielder???
Skye bolt just a phone call away
Craig Breslow has entered the chat
That’s what I’m afraid of…
Squarely within the Who Gives a Rat’s Dept, Jordan and his Uncle Al (The Pride of Saginaw) played the same positions for the same team at the same age – and posted about the same WAR in their best season.
To go further up the Rat’s Yang, Uncle Al platooned with Chuck Essegian who is in his 90’s and a heckuva person.
Jordan will not be the Padres LF. But he’ll don that garb someplace somewhere.
#1 was the loss of the King of rock and roll.
While he was gracefully sitting on the toilet.
Shut up already. The guy they have now is pretty darn good
Didnt he have an issue with his agent were the braves made a offer/counter offer and his agent never told him. Thus the braves thought thats the best we can do he never answered by now so lets move in a different direction. He fired the agent then aswell i believe
That was a claim at the time that was debunked.
They could have offered him $1B and he still would have said no. Wife clearly wanted to return home to LA
I thought even with Duvall signed that he was likely to land a bench spot, but they probably want one of the speedier guys now that Duvall is here. Wish we could have traded him for cash or another low lvl project prospect. It’s minor and silly to even say, but I everyone would prefer to get a little something out of someone before releasing them
Guardians on line one (I’m serious)
I thought the same thing. He’s cheap and he sucks, but the most important factor is that he’s cheap.
I’d argue the civil war but sure ok
Yeah that MVP caliber season from Matt Olson last year was a real bummer…
The Cardinals have seen their once crowded OF decimated by injuries to Edman and Nootbar and trades of O’Neill and Palacios. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him get a minor league deal there.
And don’t rule out the Padres. He may not be the “everyday LF” sadly that’s Profar, but they do need OF/bench help and even they can afford Luplow
