Blue Jays reliever Erik Swanson has recently been dealing with a scary situation, as it was announced last week that his son Toby was struck by a car and had to be airlifted to hospital. Thankfully, it seems things have progressed well since then. Swanson spoke with members of the media today, including Keegan Matheson of MLB.com, passing along the good news. “I stand here, very happily, telling you that in the next day or two, he should probably be going home.”
Toby’s health is obviously more important than baseball, but it sounds as though Swanson may be able to start turning his attentions back to his upcoming season. Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet relays that Swanson threw about 20 pitches today at the club’s complex and is on track to be ready for Opening Day, though he may throw another side session before getting into an organized game. Swanson made 69 appearances for the Jays last year, earning four saves and 29 holds while posting a 2.97 ERA.
Turning to the Toronto rotation, a few question marks have popped up here in camp as both Kevin Gausman and Alek Manoah were slowed by some shoulder soreness. The depth was also a bit of a concern, as Yariel Rodríguez was dealing with some back spasms while prospect Ricky Tiedemann was battling inflammation in his calf and hamstring.
As of today, three of those four appear to be progressing in a positive direction, with Manoah being the exception. Per Matheson, Manoah’s shoulder is still sore and he wasn’t able to throw today’s scheduled bullpen session. His recent MRI didn’t show any structural damage but the delays from the continued discomfort are starting to put his readiness for the start of the season in question.
Elsewhere, the news is more positive. Per Nicholson-Smith, the Jays are hopeful that Gausman can be throwing off a mound by Monday and start building up for the season. Tiedemann will be starting Saturday’s game, per Matheson, which could allow him to be almost fully built up by Opening Day. As for Rodríguez, Francys Romero relays that he’s feeling better and will throw live BP tomorrow, with game action to follow if all goes well.
The Jays figure to open the season with José Berríos, Chris Bassitt and Yusei Kikuchi in three rotation spots. Gausman and Manoah would join them if they were healthy but it sounds as though that’s unlikely to be the case with Manoah and at least somewhat uncertain with Gausman. Both Bowden Francis and Mitch White are getting stretched out in spring and could step into a rotation spot to start the year. If only one is needed, White is out of options but Francis still has one option year remaining. That could give White a leg up but he could also find himself in the bullpen as a long reliever if Francis takes the job.
Rodríguez and Tiedemann will be battling Francis and White for innings as well but they may be held back by their spring delays and general workload concerns. Rodríguez had been working as a reliever in Japan and didn’t pitch at all in 2023 after the World Baseball Classic as he waited to be released from his NPB contract. Tiedemann dealt with various injuries last year and only tossed 47 innings in the minors, followed by 18 more in the Arizona Fall League. The Jays would likely prefer to be cautious with both of them as opposed to rushing them into a season-opening big league jobs.
Elsewhere on Toronto’s roster, the Jays are facing an interesting decision with infielder Ernie Clement, as laid out in a column from Nicholson-Smith. Clement has long been considered a glove-first player but seemed to take a step forward offensively last year. He hit .380/.385/.500 in his 52 big league plate appearances and .348/.401/.544 in Triple-A.
He likely won’t be able to sustain the .391 batting average on balls in play he ran in the majors last year or even the .338 mark he had in Triple-A, as major league average was .297 in 2023. But he clearly has a knack for putting the bat on the ball as he hardly ever strikes out. He was punched out just 7.7% of the time in the big leagues last year and just 5% of the time in Triple-A.
Even passable offense can make him a solid bench piece, since he’s considered a quality defender at multiple positions, having lined up at all four infield spots and the outfield corners in his career. But he’s now out of options and can’t be sent down. The Jays will need at least one bench spot for a catcher and then may need others for guys like Davis Schneider, Daniel Vogelbach, Spencer Horwitz, Nathan Lukes or Santiago Espinal.
Nicholson-Smith speaks to a scout from a rival club who suggests Clement would likely draw interest if the Jays tried to pass him through waivers but that he might be kept around as a backup to shortstop Bo Bichette.
jimmertee
I believe that the BlueJays entire season rests on the health of the starting rotation. There is not much quality depth in the minors. Forget the hitting unless Orelvis kills it this year. The bullpen is quality but can’t carry the team the entire year or it will burn out.
More dumpster diving coming by Atkins?
Atkins fired by September?
its_happening
Maybe, maybe not (to your last question). He was over his head the moment he fumbled the teardown in 2017-2018.
Orelvis up late-April, earliest. Without a healthy pitching staff the Jays are praying for miracles.
MysteryWhiteBoy13
Over his head? Back in the playoffs in 3 seasons with 1 top 5 pick. Been in the playoffs every year since except one year that they missed by 1 game
machumizer
Yeah but they did that by spending on free agents, they havent developed a prospect besides Kirk. They fumbled hard when you take into account Alex Anthopolos is the guy they replaced and he’s built the braves into a powerhouse.
Stealing Signs
He hasn’t “built” the Braves. The majority of the roster was in place when he was hired. He’s made trades to fill in the holes. The only 2 he’s responsible for are Strider & Harris.
Who’s going to pitch when Fried & Morton”s depart?
Canuckleball
Bo Bichette is hurt that you don’t consider him as noteworthy as Kirk. (Bo was drafted and developed under Shapiro/Atkins)
Murphy NFLD
Im not a Atkins guy and i want Schneider Shaperio and Atkins all replaced. I will say that overall they have made many more good moves then bad. When it comes to signing and trades the bad moves are few and far between and the trades have been mostly amazing. Even if the player acquired didnt quite live up to expectations then the pieces traded fall off deals like Chapman, Berrios amd Grichuk for instance. The place they have really failed is with drafting. Bo, Biggio, Manoah, Schneider and thats about it when it comes to major league players in 8ish years with a top 5 pick is ridiculous IMO. Even tho they traded some of those away they still failed. Groshans, Zeuch, Martin are all 1st round picks who seem like they wont even be bench pieces. They have hit on some later round picks like Schneider i believe Roden there best OF prospect was drafted 3rd round or later. I know baseball draft is different as it bonus based so guys get pick much higher or lower then projected often that’s how they ended up with a 10th ranked guy drafting 20th this year but just horrendous scouting. Click just should be given the full Reigns Donny Basball and the manager and time to rebuild. If they drafted right they would be in this position were almost the whole team is gone after next season and if there lucky they have 3-5 ready for the show. I thi k unless they come close to winning the ALCS this season they should tear it all down and trade guys. Bo Bichette at a full year brings back a nice package from the Dodgers to really kick start a rebuild. Id like him to stay but with the deals lately 360 at 10 years seem to be his absolute floor as a 28 or so year old SS FA

“The only 2”..AA is directly responsible for Atlanta’s World Series win.

Mystery let’s get a few things straight.
Yes over his head. Not trading assets when at near-peak value.
You cite playoffs. 2020 does not count. A glorified tourney where they placed 7th. They miss the playoffs with regular rules.
Sticking with playoffs. ZERO victories. Not a single win. Not one game.
One of the best assets is Vlad, who was signed by AA. Atkins tried to jettison Romano as best he could. Over-his-head. Below average executive.
Ignorant Son-of-a-b
Schneider definitely the first one to go. And Atkins not much later. Not sure if Shapiro has the power to fire Atkins alone or if they come as a pair and would both leave together.
Larry Elliott
Schneider will go first because Atkins will put all the blame on him. Atkins lies every time he opens his mouth. Rogers will tell Shapiro to fire him or maybe they fire both of them. Atkins and Shapiro hired Schneider so that’s on them.
Canuckleball
If they get off to a bad start, the manager almost certainly gets the axe.
I think that’s why there’s so much ‘veteran’ coaching in the dugout. Mattingly and DeMarlo Hale are ready to take over mid- season as needed.
Atkins could get tossed next off-season if they miss the playoffs,
Shapiro is known as a executive/builder and was brought in to build the organization on all levels. He oversaw the major improvements to the spring training facilities, the triple A park, and Rogers Centre. He’s also overseen the rebuilding of minor league depth which has been used by Atkins.
Ownership is probably pretty happy with Shapiro. He’ll likely get another shot with a new GM. (I could be wrong though)
Larry Elliott
Rogers is in it for the money. If the team does not draw the crowds to pay for all of the stadium improvements then Shapiro may be gone also. He was the one who brought Atkins with him from Cleveland and has stood by and watched/participated in all of Atkins lies and blunders.
Larry Elliott
Under Atkins the Blue Jays minor league depth is now rated 26th out of 32 teams. Terrible.
Larry Elliott
Sorry it is 26 out of 30.
Canuckleball
As I said, it was built up and then used by Atkins. When S/A first arrived the Jays system was in the tank. They built it up and then used it. Ownership may feel Shapiro can build it back up again with another GM.
Also, Baseball America has the Jays system at 24th, Bleacher Report and Fangraphs has the Jays at 23. Not that it makes that big of a deal, just saying.
solaris602
I just think they’ll have to make a major acquisition in season to reduce the chances they’ll blow a very key year of their window. It would have to be along the lines of Pete Alonso or Paul Goldschmidt, but it needs to be a game changer.
its_happening
It’s not just how you build the farm, it’s also how you handle the goods. Atkins and company (his assistant GMs deserve blame too), have had their share of fumbles.
Murphy NFLD
Yea i think they need to tear it down next off season if they dont get close to a WS. Ownership wont let it happen IMO. Same as when Shapiro first came and was told to run it back and not trade Donaldson, EE, Stroman ETC. They ended yp with nothing to show for it. After Rogers paying for the “new” ballpark the oast 2 year theres no way then start rebuilding after this season. I love Bichette as a player and want him around for good but i dont see them giving him the money he wants. So he walks away and the jays get a 3rd/4th round pick same with Vlad etc. instead of getting a massive haul from the Dodgers for BO and trading Vlad, Romero, bull pen arms etc. they would end up with a top 10 farm very quickly or they could target young MLB players or near ready guys in deals as opposed to higher potential Single A guys.
its_happening
Yep. Remember the catcher hype?
Moreno, Adams and McGuire (plus Gurriel) garners a week or so of Brad Hand and Daulton Varsho. That’s not how you maximize assets.
Romano was left open for Rule 5. The Jays should be sending gift cards to Texas and the White Sox every year Romano pitches.
Spot on with your assessment here, Murphy.

Great news for the Swansons!

Darragh is from Canada eh? Going to hospital.
Darragh McDonald
Haha, shoot. I gave myself away. I always forget that Americans don’t say this.
Alex Snow
They don’t?
Darragh McDonald
I guess not. This is the second time I’ve been called out for writing this. I suppose an American would say “a hospital” or “the hospital”?
rememberthecoop
It’s not a problem, Darragh. I honestly don’t care, I was just having a little fun with it. All I care about is reading good articles about my favorite sport. Hockey.
LJElliott 2
Atkins has a chance to fix this under achieving off season by signing Snell. Manoah isn’t going to pitch in the majors this year. Signing Snell would also make this rotation one of the better ones in the majors. For some unknown reason Atkins has been scared to sign any bats this off-season and a strong rotation is the only hope the Jays have to succeed.
jdgoat
Dump Espinal if somebody wants to take a flyer on him and keep Clement around. Espinal has regressed in all aspects of the game in the past couple of years. I feel like Clements floor is way higher while being the cheaper option.
LJElliott 2
Agreed. Atkins has flooded this team with under achieving infield players. He should get rid of IKF also. Ooops sorry he just signed him to a ridiculous contract. Some readers feel Atkins is gone by September. I believe that 30 games in might be as far as he gets.
Canuckleball
It’s a shame because just a few years ago they looked like they had found something with Espinal but last year in particular was the first time where he was both bad on offense and more concerning on defense.
Agree on Clement. Really want to see him get more playing time. All his stats are small samples but he has positive marks at 3rd. Could he become at least a partial answer there?
Diggydugler
I have no idea why they tendered him a contract
its_happening
He had to be non tendered to save $2.75-mil this offseason. Unless traded, not the time to dump him.
Murphy NFLD
Yea in my mind i dont see how they can send Clement down with everything has show in the last 12 months or so. Look at Gio Urshela as the most recent example of a career Minor League guy who figures it out and becomes a 1st div allstar for a few seasons. I think they trade Espinal to a club needing SS or infield depth due to injury. IKF, Kirk and Clement on the bench and 1 more soot up for grabs. There either goin power LHH bat (vogelbach) or trading for/signing a platoon OF who hammers RHP. The OF is way more of a pressing need IMO whether they trade Espinal for the 1 which is most likly or sign a duvall, oham or grossman. I thought SF and the jays lined up nice on Slater for espinal trade. If they go with Vogelbach then Espinal will be sent down
its_happening
When you put it that way I think you may be right. Jays deploy Schneider/Cavan as backup OFs. Bench is: a catcher, Clement, Schneider and _______.
It didn’t feel like the Jays were aggressively shopping Espinal or considering a non-tender. Clement can field SS well. That should have made Espinal expendable.
MysteryWhiteBoy13
Time to trade Espinal for someone with options, he’s a waste of a roster spot, Clement can do everything Espinal does plus play more positions
its_happening
Espy gets nothing in a trade. The Jays just need someone willing to take him.
Larry Elliott
When you look at the shape of the starting rotation warning signs are going off that Atkins is ignoring. He would not sign a good bat this off season so the rotation is the only chance the Jays have for success. Monah is not going to pitch in the majors this season. If he signs Snell that might save the rotation, save the season and save his job. I agree with the other readers that Espinal is gone. This team is filled with under achieving over priced infielders. Like the ridiculous money he gave to IKF. One writer suggested Atkins is gone by September. I believe that he may be gone after the first 30 games if he doesn’t do something to help this rotation. I can only hope that when he goes Shapiro goes also,

Spring training so far looks pretty lame. (I know spring training shouldn’t be an indicator of the season, however;)
There doesn’t seem to be any “swagger”…. That being said; the first 10 “real” games are against Tampa, Houston and the Yankees….Last year, Tampa was on a tear that helped them in the long run. I wonder what the first 10 will be like for the Jays…then the 20 after that…. They needed to sign a Soto like guy. (Not an Ohtani)
Stealing Signs
Name a good bat that was available besides Belli, & even then other GM’s were weary that he’d be able to repeat his stats from last season.
jdgoat
I would have gave Soler or Teoscar one or two years. But they could easily be landlines, and people would just blame Atkins for signing them. The reality is that once they missed out on Ohtani, they were destined to have an underwhelming offseason. What they needed wasn’t available, unless they wanted to mortgage what few prospects they have on Soto for one year.
Diggydugler
No way Atkins gives Teoscar what he got in LA. Atkins dont do deferals sadly.
its_happening
He ignored 3B one year too long. He ignored CF one year too long. He ignored SP at least a year too long. Atkins and the entire front office have a knack for that.
Ownership. Starts at the very top.

Manoah is fighting back against David Wells’ assertion that you can’t pull fat.
acoss13
David Wells was a big boy and he was one of the best left-handed starters in my humble opinion. Boomer was always great, if my recollection is correct he had a great curveball. His perfect game was a thing of beauty. Manoah should embrace the thickness and just go full David Wells or Big Sexy Bartolo Colon.
DonOsbourne
I loved watching Wells. I don’t think Manoah is tough enough physically or mentally to try and imitate Boomer.
Canuckleball
Manoah lost a bunch of weight in the offseason and worked out with a new program. It’s possible he’s built up too much muscle in the wrong places and/or stressed his shoulder during the workouts and is now more worn out then it should be…
Hopefully they can figure it out because I like the way he approached the offseason and he had a good attitude coming into camp.
acoss13
Wells was very competitive, and if he was on winning teams he performed much better. I know this first-hand when he played with the White Sox, he was not good. The following season he went back to the Yankees and regained, not all, but a lot of his form.
Manoah came out like a peacock, so he’s going to have keep that competent edge even when times are down. I’m glad he came in with a much better outlook, but if he bulked up too much that’s a problem too.
Edp007
Wells had incredible control. Look it up
Diggydugler
Any random off the street with no knowledge of baseball would have had a better offseason than Atkins. $15M fo IKF! Had him for free in Ernie! Tendered contract for Espinal! Thats another $2.5M. Signed KK when they have a CF already they mortgaged future for (Varsho),..that’s it, that’s the off season. Still no 4th OF, no major league 3B, same team as last year but worse. Whit and Chapman played
Whit and Chapman played a combined 285 games last year and they were literally replaced with IKF, one of the most consistently bad hitters of the past 5 years.
terrymesmer
Whit was replaced by Davis Schneider.
its_happening
Who hasn’t looked good in Spring.
Digdugler
That doesnt help his case
its_happening
Schneider is a bench guy in my mind. Merrifield was the starting 2B. Terry is incorrect, and he delivers quite a lot of that randomly here.

I just keep thinking how long it would take for me to make $15 million, and I am far from being “halfassed” in my profession. Been a Jays fan since ‘81; and getting tired of watching multimillionaires put in half efforts. They have the 5th highest payroll.
Tired of watching the escapades of the likes of Chapman turning down $20M for a season of games…thinking he deserved more. (Defence was ok, offence was bad). $20M spread amongst the commoners would make many people happy! $100M?…
Rogers/Shapiro have been experts at extracting coins from the peasants. If this season starts out bad….i’ll be spending my coins and time elsewhere…
Sorry for the rant….just tired, and tired of incompetence.
its_happening
Bestone it starts with Rogers.
First they ignored many, MANY great execs in 2001-02 to hire the cheap, Moneyball option in Ricciardi. After churning out the most MLB talent through a good Toronto system, Ricciardi and Godfrey get rid of some talented people in 2002-2003. Scouts, coaches etc.
They have never recovered. People revere Anthopoulos and up to July 2015 he had provided so-so results in drafts and trades. He was fortunate to strike gold in Bautista, and his delivering of Vlad has helped Atkins.

I remember those days. Often it felt like the Jays were content filler for Sportsnet.

I love the declarative manner in which so many speak around here – as they actually know something, rather than just having an opinion. Opinions are a lot like bu++hole$ – we all have one and some stink more than others.
