A’s Sign J.D. Davis

By Anthony Franco | March 18, 2024 at 9:55am CDT

March 18: Davis would earn $750K for reaching 500 plate appearances and another $250K if he reaches 550 plate appearances, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

March 16: The Athletics have now officially announced Davis’ one-year deal for the 2024 season.

March 15: The A’s have reportedly agreed to terms with third baseman J.D. Davis on a one-year, $2.5MM free agent contract. The deal, which is pending a physical and has not yet been announced by the team, contains an additional $1MM in performance bonuses. The infielder is represented by ALIGND Sports Management.

Davis stays in the Bay Area after being released by the Giants on Monday. His time in San Francisco ended on an acrimonious note. Pushed out of the starting lineup by the signings of Jorge Soler and Matt Chapman, he was arguably a redundant fit on the San Francisco roster. The Giants also carry Wilmer Flores as a righty-hitting corner infield/DH option.

That prompted San Francisco to shop Davis on the trade market. When no deal presented itself, the Giants placed him on outright waivers. The hope was that another team would claim him and assume the $6.9MM salary which his camp had won in an arbitration hearing in February. None of the other 29 teams took that on, leading the Giants to put Davis on release waivers.

While he was no longer a great roster fit in San Francisco, the release was clearly motivated in large part by finances. Under the collective bargaining agreement, arbitration-eligible players who settle on a contract without going to a hearing are entitled to their full salary even if they’re released. Arbitration salaries determined in a hearing — whether in favor of the player or team — are not fully guaranteed until Opening Day. By releasing Davis more than 15 days before the start of the regular season, the Giants were only responsible for 30 days termination pay. That checked in a little above $1.1MM.

Davis’ deal with the A’s brings his guaranteed money for the upcoming season around $3.6MM. If he hits all of his incentives, he could get to around $4.6MM in earnings. The end of his Giants tenure will cost Davis a few million dollars, although he’ll at least have a clear path to everyday reps.

Oakland was likely to go into the year with either Abraham Toro or Darell Hernaiz logging the majority of their third base work. Toro is a career .211/.282/.354 hitter who spent most of last season in Triple-A with the Brewers. Hernaiz is a talented prospect, but he has yet to make his big league debut. Even if Hernaiz hits his way to the majors this year, he could push defensive specialist Nick Allen for playing time at shortstop. The A’s grabbed Miguel Andújar off waivers from the Pirates early in the offseason. He’s still on the roster but has played mostly in the corner outfield over the past few seasons.

Davis should be a clear upgrade over that group. The 30-year-old (31 in April) has been an above-average hitter in each of the last five seasons. Last year’s .248/.325/.413 batting line was his worst rate production since he emerged in 2019. Still, he played in a career-high 144 games and connected on 18 home runs. Davis has above-average power and draws a fair number of walks. He strikes out at a higher than average rate, yet his .268/.352/.443 slash of the last five years could earn him a spot in the middle third of Mark Kotsay’s lineup.

With between five and six years of major league service, Davis will head back to free agency next offseason. The opportunity to play on an everyday basis is surely appealing as he tries to establish himself as the #3 third base option in a free agent class that’ll include Alex Bregman and, if he opts out, Chapman. Improving his defensive grades would be a big boost to his market value. Davis has typically rated as a fringy defender. Public metrics were split on his value last season. Defensive Runs Saved had him among the least effective third basemen at 11 runs below average in 915 2/3 innings. Statcast was a lot more impressed, rating him four runs better than par.

Davis also drew interest from the Mets this week. Joel Sherman of the New York Post tweets that he chose the A’s in part because of the guarantee that he’ll play on a regular basis. He reunites with former Giants teammates Ross Stripling, Alex Wood and Scott Alexander as veteran additions to the A’s clubhouse. As with any veteran joining a rebuilding team on a one-year deal, he’d be a clear trade candidate this summer if he’s playing at his typical level.

Oakland’s player payroll now sits around $61MM, as calculated by RosterResource. That is a little above last season’s approximate $57MM Opening Day mark but still sits last in MLB by a country mile. The A’s have a full 40-man roster and will need to make a corresponding move once the contract is finalized.

Robert Murray of FanSided first reported the A’s and Davis were in agreement. MassLive’s Chris Cotillo had previously suggested the A’s were showing interest in Davis. Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic reported it was a one-year, $2.5MM guarantee with $1MM in performance bonuses.

Yea im sure he had higher offers or at leat the same on better teams. He just wants to stay in the bay at least this year as he has intended all along. As a bonus he will be traded to a contender and okay some post season ball so its a win win all the way around. This really is the best out come for JD and it certainly is a boom for the A’s as they have actually added someone of substance. They may sell a few extra tickets and ideally get a good return on him at the deadline.

Unless JD Davis goes Super Nova and breaks Aaron Judge’s AL homerun record he isn’t going to sell any extra tickets for the anywhere but Oakland A’s.

I don’t think you know what value is. You are paying a guy twenty million dollars more a year to bring less offense but better defense. Do you think that better defense is worth the twenty million a year and the million plus you gave Davis to walk away for nothing?

Apparently the Giants think so. Defense matters with a ground ball pitching staff. Its 14m difference between Davis and Chapman, Not 20mm. Besides career and 2023 season Chapman has a better ops+.

Doesn’t make sense to argue the matter. SF Giants made the decision they thought was best for the team. Chapman could regain his presence at the plate and be all that he was in Oakland (before the injury). And JD Davis wasn’t the piece that the Giants thought he’d be, so they cut bait. Oakland lucked out by getting a guy that can solidify a position they were likely to fill with a platoon this year. And Davis gets ABs, showcase his talent before going back into free agency. Everyone wins.

As cheap as they are, I have to agree that they have some intriguing players. They have the luxury of being able to test drive players who are roster casualties because of they are always digging at the bottom of the barrel. It appears they found some good hitters with Noda and Rooker. This 2 would actually start on many other teams based on their performed last season. They shouldn’t be as bad this season, but then again they could be worse.

So I guess all a team has to do is refuse to sign an arb-elg player and instead let it go to a hearing, after which, no matter how big of a salary the player wins in said hearing, the team can just cut him and owe him just severance pay. Sounds like a scam.

They have to tender the player a contract or they become a free agent. The max a team can offer is a 20% pay cut so low balling isn’t allowed
If the teams dont want to pay the player just non-tender him. Then they dont have to pay the severance.

I’m sure they could but you are forgetting something, a player makes the decision of where they want to play. They could have technically offered him a 10M dollars contract and maybe he feels slighted from the trade and doesnt want to go there or he doesnt want to move him and his family, etc etc.

Remember Zack Greinke? Im sure the Yankees or the Mets offered him more than the Royals did but he wasnt signing for either team.

How about Matt Harvey after he left the mets the first time. He said he refused to sign with the mets and said that for multiple years.

all the comments about the giants somehow screwing jd davis over and somehow planning this and making a low ball offer are stupid
the giants offered $6.55MM and davis demand was $6.9MM
he made the decision to procede and won
the rules allowed for the giants to release him which they did had they not signed chapman they would have paid and played davis
he gets 3.6 now with a chance at 4.6
    it’s the way it goes,
i recall all the posts about how the giants would end up having to pay him full 6.9 in the original post about the release as they would never get away with this.
if he accepted the 6.55 he would be receiving it, it didn’t work out that way, but all parties acted within the rules and i see no issues

The first and only offer was an hour before the filing deadline and was for less than 6.55. They then declared a self imposed file and trial policy when Davis asked to settle at the 6.55.

It’s no secret Giants are file and trial. It’s their policy.
Why isn’t his agent talking comparative players and their numbers and getting a feel for where he stands at the Giants well before the deadline ?

It’s also been a long standing situation that the Giants could land Chapman. He doesn’t know that, and if that happens JDs roster spot is in jeopardy ? He goes ahead and commits him to a non guaranteed contract anyway ?

Dude was asleep at the wheel. The fact he pulls out the “I’ve been doing this 22 years” just enhances the embarrassment.

        @storm

Do you have proof of that? even if you do is that the teams fault or the agent/player’s fault he took so long to push the issue?

I bet you more players when its a small gap like that in the future will take that deal instead of go to arbitration.

I’m pretty sure FZ said as much in his zoom call explaining the waiver.

I understand both sides and I’m not advocating for the Giants necessarily do anything differently. But it’s conspicuous that the other arb eligible players signed earlier than JDD. I believe the Giants knew they might not need JD Davis at all, and especially at 6+M$. The right thing to do was probably sign Chapman early and let JDD walk, but they couldn’t because the Chapman deal took so long.

          Not Conspicuous at all

Chapman/Boras could have also said he is willing to sign 3 years 54 million earlier in the offseason instead of trying to get 100M+ and probably only signed so low because most opportunities dried up and got desperate.

This would have been the right thing to do but that is not the Boras way. So if you looking at anyone to blame, i would say Boras is your guy or blame greed from any of the above. Boras & Chapman (for Boras usual tactics and stall) or Davis & Agent (waiting for offer instead of pushing for it earlier, not accepting original deal) for trying to squeeze every dollar.

I don’t think it’s up to the Giants to initiate arbitration discussions. The number they want to pay is the number they want to pay. Surely it’s up to the agent to find out what that is and negotiate as required. Farhan should call the agent and initiate the process of a pay rise negotiation ? I don’t think so. The player side has to be the proactive one.

I’ve always liked JD Davis. This is a good move for the A’s. Glad he found a home.

This definitely looks to be a sign and trade at deadline type of deal.

Why would he do this? Now he will have to move in July to a team he has no say in.

The Giants couldn’t even find anyone who would trade for this guy, but everyone on here thinks he’s going to go out and have some great year like he’s never had before. It’s not happening. If he does get flipped at the deadline it’ll be for peanuts because JD Davis just isn’t that good. And he’s 30 so he’s most likely already peaked.

Good move for Davis. Moving would be rough right now. Yeah the As are bad, but he can still shine especially more in the middle of the lineup. Play well, stay healthy, and get a good contract next year.

His agent probably tried to talk him out of signing with Oakland. There were better deals on the table. Oakland is close to home tho and it’s perfect for him to showcase his skills for half a season and go to a contender at the deadline

Seems likely he wanted to stay out in the Bay area as that’s where his family and housing is, or it may simply be that there wasn’t a match with other teams this late. The good news for him is he likely gets traded to a contender come July. He doesn’t have to guess which teams are contending. They will come find him midseason.

The Giants technically didn’t do anything wrong, but they totally manipulated the situation and screwed over Davis. Players should take note.

how did they manipulate the situation?

From what i see, They offered him a contract he didnt like it thought he would do better in arbitration won abritration. Then Chapman offered a price i dont think anyone saw coming and they jumped on a major sale.

Your out to dinner and you order a burger. Just as the waiter placing the order you find out they have a special of filet mignon and lobster for a dollar more than the burger. Is that you manipulating the situation?

I’m a jd fan but sometimes just a bad situation for one and good situation for another and not manipulation.

So does San Fran still have to pay the 6.9 from arbitration? or was that only if he played the 2024 season with SF? Or J.D only get the 2.5 from the A’s?

Arbitration isn’t guaranteed. Giants are on the hook for 1.1, a prorated figure for JD’s time in Spring Training.

I am sure Manager Mark Kotsay will see that his fellow Cal State Fullerton alum J.D. Davis will have the opportunity to show everyone he deserved the arbitration finding.

This is what happens when you get to greedy. Would have never happened if accepted the 6.5mil. Getting the extra 400k in court cost you 3million. He can’t blame Giants only himself and his agent…

I doubt he got greedy. He probably just thought he was taking the standard shot at going for a little more money.

I wouldn’t particularly expect a player to be aware of the downside. That’s more on the agent to alert him to it. The enormous majority of the time it’s you either win arb, or you lose arb—the team pays you either way and you get on with it.

Still, a 31 year old guy who hasn’t beaten 0.9 WAR since 2019 should be made aware by his negotiators that he’s on the edge even with 1/$6.9m.

Quite a few players have been cut after winning their arbitration cases. Interestingly Davis had won an arbitration case against the Mets. Maybe that influenced their decision to proceed with filing.

This should 100% be illegal. If you tender a player you should be on the hook for paying him whether its settled initially or winning an arb case. Otherwise why would a player go to arb panel.. Garunteed this will be addressed next cba if not sooner.

Thats a risk a player can take. Most players going to arbitration have an open market value larger than they’ll make by filing so teams gladly keep them. Not that long ago the tender contracts weren’t guaranteed until opening day but that provision was negotiated out. The players are getting more guaranteed money and situations that ever and I almost always side with the players regarding wages, but this time im siding with the team. Davis had a chance to secure a solid contract and instead he tried to squeeze an extra 600k.
Giants signed superior players at his primary positions and they just decided to cut their losses. His loss for trying to squeeze every last buck out of the team.

Or you can say that he took a gamble on himself and his career. Had he remained with the Giants, he’ll be a bench player with Matt Carpenter there. He’s now getting ABs and a starting job with the A’s. If he has a good season, that $3MM loss won’t be that meaningful on his next big contract with a new team.
