The Pirates have added Martin Perez and Marco Gonzales to their rotation this winter but remain in active pursuit of at least one more starter, reports Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The Bucs are in ongoing trade discussions with multiple clubs, including the Marlins, and are still showing interest in various free agents, per Mackey. FanSided’s Robert Murray also wrote this morning, after the Bucs signed Josh Fleming, that Pittsburgh is still active on both the trade and free agent markets.
Miami has reportedly entertained interest in starters Edward Cabrera, Jesus Luzardo and Braxton Garrett at various points this offseason. Ballyhooed right-hander Eury Perez, who impressed with a 3.15 ERA through 91 1/3 innings as a 20-year-old rookie in 2023, is widely considered to be off limits.
Of the other Miami arms, Cabrera has generally been considered the “most” available. The 6’5″ 25-year-old is a former top-tier prospect himself but has dealt with command troubles through his first year-plus of big league service time and has not yet as established as the other three hurlers in question. Mackey indeed suggests that Cabrera is the likeliest target, reporting that a deal between the Bucs and the Fish would likely include an infielder such as Liover Peguero, Nick Gonzales or Ji Hwan Bae.
Each of those three have varying levels of trade value themselves. Peguero has garnered the most prospect fanfare of the group but struggled in a 59-game MLB debut last year, hitting .237/.280/.374 in 213 plate appearances. Gonzales is a former No. 7 overall pick and top-100 prospect, but Baseball America now lists him ninth among Pittsburgh minor leaguers. Bae is another once-well-regarded prospect but exhausted his rookie eligibility last year with a tepid .231/.296/.311 showing through 371 plate appearances. All three are middle infielders, though Gonzales and Bae are considered limited to second base (and, in Bae’s case, the outfield).
Any member of that trio would figure to be just one of several pieces going to Miami, should a deal come together. Though Cabrera himself has some questions about his lackluster command, he’s still performed far better in the majors than any of those Pittsburgh infielders, and controllable young pitching is typically the most difficult type of asset to acquire.
Since making his big league debut in 2021, Cabrera has pitched 197 2/3 innings of 4.01 ERA ball. That includes a rocky debut that lasted just 26 1/3 frames in ’21, however. Over the past two seasons, he sports a more encouraging 3.73 mark in 171 1/3 frames. Cabrera has averaged better than 96 mph on his heater, punched out an above-average 26.6% of his opponents and induced grounders at a strong 50.6% clip. Still, fielding-independent metrics are a bit more bearish on him than ERA due to his 13.7% walk rate. In that same 2022-23 window, Cabrera sports a 4.50 FIP and 4.42 SIERA.
If Cabrera can improve his command at all, he has the makings of a clear big league starter. His fastball and changeup give him a pair of above-average to plus offerings, with the change in particular befuddling lefties and thus mitigating typical platoon issues. Southpaws have flailed away at the pitch and produced a hapless .184/.291/.315 batting line in 433 plate appearances against Cabrera. Because his slider hasn’t been as consistently effective, Cabrera has struggled against right-handed opponents. They’ve hit just .231 against him but posted a huge .376 OBP and slugged .422.
Cabrera’s 1.147 years of big league service time put him on track to be arbitration-eligible as a Super Two player next winter. That’d make him arb-eligible four times rather than the standard three, but he’s under club control through the 2028 season regardless.
Beyond their interest in Miami’s starters, the Pirates have seen free agents Domingo German and Noah Syndergaard throw recently, per Mackey. Either figures to be available on a low-cost deal, and it seems entirely feasible that the Pirates could both trade for a pre-arb starter who won’t alter their payroll and still add another low-cost rotation piece on a one-year deal. Other veterans still on the market –beyond top starters Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery, who are surely out of Pittsburgh’s price range — include Michael Lorenzen, Hyun Jin Ryu, Mike Clevinger and Eric Lauer.
mlb1225
Please, just do something. If we end the off-season with edward and German, I’ll be 100% content.
Treehouse22
I’d be happy with either one. Cabrera would be preferred but German wouldn’t cost prospects. Get it done.
Macbeth
Cabrera would be my pick. Pencils into the rotation for quite some time, along with Skenes, and whoever else makes it among Chandler, Solometo, Ortiz, Priester, and the like.
TheMan 3
Skenes won’t be brought up until August nor will any of the others you listed except Priester
mlb1225
I doubt he’ll stay down until August. Chandler and Solometo might because they’re still so young, with the former just getting there in the last week of the minor league season. If Skenes is healthy and pitching well, I think we’ll see him by June.
Macbeth
I was referencing long term I should’ve specified.
A lot of question marks on 2025 rotation outside of maybe 1 or 2 names at this point.
Card AG
There is not a single reason for you to think August. When gerrit Cole was a rookie he was brought up by June and that’s usually the month when top prospects get brought up here
TheMan 3
Super two status is why he won’t be brought up until August
Despite their intentions to be competitive next year, controlling a player means more years at a reasonable price
PiratesPundit51
Super 2 is WAY before August, usually about two weeks into June. The ROY thing (getting automatic Super 2, regardless of when the callup was) would loom larger for a guy such as Skenes.
If your thinking is relating to the trade deadline, then team control is really out of the equation, it means the Pirates are out of contention and need to fill the rotation after trading Perez and Marco. If that’s the case, then there’s no reason to bring him up at all next year. Tack another year of eligibility on and wait until June 2025 while giving those starts to a Bido-type who has no long-term future.
mlb1225
The Pirates will still get the extra year of control if they wait until only June.
Scott Kliesen
Why August? Super 2 is in June. If Skenes is blowing away AAA hitters in April and May, I’d expect to see him in mid June.
Scott Kliesen
Super 2 deadline passes by mid-June, not August.
Scott Kliesen
They get extra year on control if they wait something like two weeks after start of season, unless he finishes ROY, or top 3 in Cy Young. Considering Skenes hasn’t shown he can handle pitching effectively on regular MLB rest, this matter is a moot point. 0% chance he comes up before Super 2 passes in June to ensure Pirates only pay 3 years of arbitration wages, not 4.
bennydistefano
June 10th is the magic day, no matter the scenerio
Sometimes teams wait a few days past to make sure
Skenes has a longer road than peeps may think
He needs to get accustomed to MLB while he stretches out again and he needs to do it while pitching in
North East temps
Don’t worry, be greatful its not you fouling off pitches in
40-45 degree temps
Its simple, if Pirates have the same record on June 10th as last year and Skenes is safe to throw 80 P, CALL HIM UP
6 years controlled seems like a nice window
however, that probably shrinks to 4 or 5 when moving him
So you can’t waste the first year if you have a shot
Pirates should be thinking long term right now but that’s more wishful thinking then reality
holecamels35
I need Cabrera, would finish the offseason. Shame because the team looks above average everywhere except for the rotation.
Keller
Skenes
Cabrera
Perez
Priester/Contrares
That’s not a bad rotation midseason if a fifth starter emerges.
Macbeth
I think Gonzalez fits in there before Roansey gets another chance.
Jack Hoffman
Can’t believe no ones taken a flyer on Syndergaard. Dude is a bounce back candidate and could be a stellar number 5 starter.
Steve Adams
Four teams have taken fliers on Syndergaard since he left the Mets. He’s been a bounceback candidate for 3-4 years now and still hasn’t bounced back.
Someone will sign him, of course, but the shine has come off considerably. His four-seamer is down more than six miles per hour from his peak and is now sitting at a lesser average (92.4 mph) than his slider used to (93.1 mph) before the injuries.
Honestly, kudos to his agent if he gets him another guaranteed deal. I’d imagine many (most) clubs are only willing to give him a minor league deal at this point.
Jack Hoffman
Uhhh, where did I say the last four years? Was talking about now.
Braves_saints_celts
Uhhh,he gave you a completely reasonable response. Get over yourself
Chuck from Uniontown
You didn’t say the last 4 years, but the context of him failing to bounce back the last few years is relevant.
Jack Hoffman
Clown
Jack Hoffman
Not relevant to what I was talking about. Go comment on someone else’s post.
Chuck from Uniontown
You were talking about signing Syndergaard as a bounceback candidate. How is him failing to bounce back over the last few years not relevant to that? Do you think GMs don’t see that as relevant?
SalaryCapMyth
You didn’t say that. Steve added that to point out that he has been a bounce back candidate for quite a while, the last 3 or 4 seasons which didn’t work out so it’s unlikely he is viewed that way by many.
PittPirate22
@jakehoffman The point he made and you can’t seem to grasp is the silliness of a team take a flyer on a player who has crash-landed the last four years.
njbirdsfan
Ugh pick a city
Jack Hoffman
“Do you think GMs don’t see that as relevant?”
What a clown.
Chuck from Uniontown
@Jack I don’t see what you think GMs look at if they don’t look at player performance.
Jack Hoffman
You don’t understand how the front office works and thats ok. Not everyone is cut out for this.
Jack Hoffman
I guess you don’t know how to read. Take a flier: “to do something that could have either good or bad results : to gamble on something risky.” That’s part of sports and is very common for someone like Syndergaard who has had past success. Just accept that I am right and you all are wrong.
Chuck from Uniontown
I expect a team to sign him to a minor league deal, but it’s not hard to see why he’s not gotten snatched up yet since the last few flyer years didn’t work out for him.
Jack Hoffman
Just take that L and move on. I was right and you are all wrong.
PiratesPundit51
Syndergaard is only bouncing if he’s made out of rubber at this point in his career. He’s had as many bad seasons as good ones (actually more, 2019 wasn’t exactly great). You’d be paying for the possibility of 2016 Thor, while Chris Hemsworth (the actual Thor) would be just about as good at this point, and would sell more tickets.
holecamels35
If the Dodgers and Guardians couldn’t fix him, no one can.

Jack Hoffman

Scott Kliesen
You used the word “stellar” and ”Thor” in the same sentence. Noah hasn’t been anything close to stellar at getting MLB hitters out for a very long time, Sir.
Jack Hoffman
Lmao I never used the word “thor” you clown. Try again. And sure, maybe stellar is a bit of an overreach but this is a lame comment section, not like some random hot take has to be taken as gospel you goofball.

What is Miami doing trading off their pitching staff?
SalaryCapMyth
It’s the only way they will bring in offense because they use the free agent market very limitedly. Arraez, the Marlins best bat was brought in through a trade with the Twins.
PoisonedPens
One could just simplify that to “what is Miami doing?” and cut and paste it ad lib…
holecamels35
They have no idea what they’re doing. They sneak into the playoffs then never add to the team and keep tinkering with the front office. Been that way for decades now. I feel bad.
Mjm117
But they haven’t traded any SP’ers.
They have “ entertained “ clubs calling.
Hopefully they sneak in the playoff again. Although I find it doubtful.
TheMan 3
Send Bae and Palacios, the other two have far too much upside to trade away
SalaryCapMyth
What kind of pitching do you think the Pirates need because those two aren’t going to land you the starter most Pirate fans would prefer. For the two you are offering, I wouldn’t expect anything better than Trevor Rogers or Brian Hoeing.
If you really think the Pirates don’t need anything more productive than pitchers like Rogers, than that works but when I look at the Pirates roster, it looks like to me the Pirates have plenty of those kind of pitchers.
Karp62
I also heard rumors with talks of Bae and Ashcroft for Cabrera, a deal I would do in a hot minute.
jimmyz
I imagine Peguero probably holds the most appeal to Miami of those three since he can handle playing SS. Definitely have to add an arm with years of club control like Mlodzinski, Jose Hernandez, or Jones that can help the Marlins sooner than later and a third A ball player with potential like Lonnie Smith or Shalin Polanco. But I’d make that trade then sign Keller to an extension before the season starts. Pirates need starting pitching and some certainty about long term starting pitching. Keller, Cabrera, Skenes could be the foundation of the next Pirates playoff teams.
YourDreamGM
Just wait and Bae Palacios will be on waivers.
User 4095290658
Palacios should’ve gone before CSN.
wvsteve
Probably would take Peguero due to fact he can play short. I would be perfectly content with gett Cabrera as well. Come on BC close the deal
TheMan 3
Peguerro played far better than Gonzalez last year but understand your position @wvsteve
wvsteve
Personally think Triolo will be starting 2b.
Bob Sacamano 310
They gotta be talking to the Sox about Cease too, right?
ronnsnow
Cease is Archer 2.0. Want no parts of him.
YourDreamGM
Sox don’t want to trade him.
PiratesPundit51
The White Sox know that a healthy Cease with even pedestrian numbers will fetch more at the deadline than right now. They seem willing to risk him getting injured to fetch a king’s ransom for him. I can’t say I blame them, he’s their only legitimate trade chip of high value.
Macbeth
Cease, Cabrera, or even Shane Bieber just pull the damn trigger BC.
holecamels35
I disagree on Cease and Bieber. Bieber is on the last year of his deal and has seen a scary velocity and strikeout decrease. Cease is just not worthy of what would be a huge asking price. They would insist on Termarr Johnson and/or Henry Davis plus.
Macbeth
I would gladly take Bieber over Ortiz/Priester at this moment.
PiratesPundit51
I agree…at this moment. Priester, even if he only gets marginally better and becomes a 4/5 type of guy has more long term value than Bieber, unless you’re all in on this season.
Ortiz’s future is probably more of a backend bullpen arm. He just doesn’t have the arsenal, or at least doesn’t have enough command/trust of it, to get through the order twice. But I’m pretty convinced that he could be successful if he’d just let it rip for 3 outs and that’s all that was expected of him.
Macbeth
If we could combine Roansey, Ortiz, and Priester into 1 guy that would be great haha.
I still have hopes for Priester honestly. I think he could still be a solid #3 or #4 guy. I would love to see Cabrera be brought in and then us sign German and we roll in with Keller, Cabrera, German, Perez, and Gonzalez 1 to 5. I think that gives us a really great rotation with depth coming from Ortiz, Priester, Roansey for spot starts, and Skenes/Jones coming up if someone falters or there is a long term injury.
davemlaw
If the Bucs have Skenes start the season in MLB can they win the NL Central? I think so and they become a very scary playoff team.
YourDreamGM
Or they can wait 2 weeks and gain a extra year. Or most likely wait a few months and avoid arb 4.
Bob Sacamano 310
Yeah and manage his innings and workload early while he is in the minors and then call up with no restrictions/needing to skip him more often in the majors.
YourDreamGM
Needs to adjust to pitching every 5 days. Even if he was ready they would wait until mid April to get the extra year. And if he was good enough to win ROY they would wait until June so he wouldn’t have enough time to win it.
TJECK109
Ok so the pirates are “interested” in Miami staters. Means they will end up elsewhere
joew
Braxton Garrett is one that maybe worth giving up a “couple” top prospects for from 2022 and 23 where pretty not bad. ~3.7 FIP with a ERA to match. a Good WHIP and lots of control.
Think it goes with out saying that Skenes Termarr and Jones are not a fit for this trade but Solomato and Chandler could be along with one or more of Pegeuro, Gonzalez and Bae.. especially if they may push Termaar a bit faster. More i’m thinking about him the more it seems like it might be a good idea.. sitting back here from the cheap seats 🙂
PiratesPundit51
Lower ceiling, higher floor for sure. Don’t see Garrett ever reaching the heights Cabrera could if both reached their full potential. Either way, the Marlins could look at any of the 3 INFs you named and wonder if they’re really upgrading anything, only Peguero reaching his potential as a 15-20 HR guy should really interest them.
Asking for Solometo or Chandler with Peggy is probably too steep for the Pirates if Garrett is the return, it’s not quite enough for Cabrera from the Marlins POV. The Marlins can afford to wait the Pirates out and see who blinks first even if they think the trade is fair, to see if they get the Pirates to toss in someone like Derek Diamond too.
joew
I’d want Garrett for improvement now he is a MLB midrotation starter. . Cabrera needs work still but maybe a mid->top rotation starter. I value Garrett higher at this moment but that could change by the start of the season lol.
I would be fine getting either or both depending on the package
note: I haven’t seen them play that i can recall just a quick look from the cheap seats 🙂
PiratesPundit51
Garrett would be great just so that when Ashcroft gets here, they’d be the first MLB team with two guys named Braxton in the history of baseball. Garrett & Ashcroft sounds more like a law firm than part of a pitching rotation, by hey, maybe they’d lay down the law.
21Clemente21
Signing German will give them additional leverage in a trade with Marlins. The Marlins know the Pirates need a right handed starter, once German signs with Bucs, the price should come down a bit, not much, just a bit enough to get a trade done.
Cabrera and German will be good adds for Pirates and the future.
PiratesPundit51
German is an interesting case for sure. Inconsistent, but with talent and a fair amount of baggage. He’s served out his punishment and sought help (more than what can be said about another pitcher who fans seem to want).
It’s hard to say that he’s put his troubles behind him, but leaving the pressure-cooker in New York for a relaxed place such as Pittsburgh might be the thing he needs. There’s no hypocrisy in taking one damaged guy over another, you weigh all of the factors (including contrition or a lack thereof) when deciding whether he’s past it or going to relapse. Having Chapman on this roster, a guy who’s lived through some of the same issues and put them in the past, would undoubtedly help German as well.
German would be a good add regardless of a Marlins trade, it would be excellent if paired with one for Cabrera. I’m not saying he couldn’t do well elsewhere, but the chances of him keeping a clean nose and showing off his talent is better in Pittsburgh than most other teams.
YourDreamGM
Signing German or anyone else won’t change leverage.
PiratesPundit51
I don’t think the Marlins are that desperate to move a starter. If they truly were in love with any of the Pirates’ “MLB ready” INFs, a deal would have already been done. A deal with the Pirates (for someone like Bae) is akin to taking a $20 into a casino and having a penny slot bleed you dry, when what the Marlins want is a spot at the craps table where the odds of turning that $20 into $100 are much better.
Chuck from Uniontown
I think Jack believes that 2024 exists in a vacuum and previous data points mean absolutely nothing.
PiratesPundit51
To the contrary, I think Jack hasn’t seen Syndergaard throw a pitch since about 2018 and uses those (now ancient) data points as rationale to sign him. That and a name on the back of a jersey that he’s heard of, good or bad. After seeing him throw a first pitch at the World Series, I’d be more inclined to sign Nolan Ryan than Syndergaard.
HEHEHATE
Gimmie Cabrera gimmie Bauer both moves make this team a series playoff contender in the division
Mike Adamson
I wouldn’t give up on Peguero just yet and insist on Bae or Gonzalez being part of the package going the other way!
IndyNorm
I agree on Peguero, however everything I have read indicates that the Marlins want a guy who can play SS. That makes him the more likely target. I assume BC would rather trade Gonzo who is limited to 2B, or maybe 3B and has less of an MLB resume. Gonzales or Bae would require a much better Pirate pitching prospect to be included in any deal.
YourDreamGM
Bae Gonzales have such little value they won’t really matter. Peguero has more but nothing huge. He has ability to play ss but pirates didn’t develop it. Teams will be buying low on any of these. Peguero much more valuable though.
You can insist all you want. It doesn’t matter. They will trade to the highest bidder or just keep their pitcher.
Mike Adamson
Nobody thinks it will be just that. We realize the prospect or prospects will be the prize! Just saying I think Peguero could have a breakthrough year! He showed some flashes of potential!
YourDreamGM
Peguero has real value. Could start at 2b as is. Gonzales looks weaker and less value. Bae much much less value. You can insist all you want. I wouldn’t want Gonzales Bae. If coaches said they can improve them then I would buy low.
Mike Adamson
100% see it the same way
PiratesPundit51
This has been my thought from the beginning. The Mariners would be more improved getting Peguero than the Marlins ,their INF depth is thinner, older and already less productive; the Marlins already have the same production and would be trading for power potential while also dealing with developing Peguero as an SS.
The value of starters is so high that even lousy ones can get $8-9 million per year. For a controllable guy who’s got potential, let’s say just starting arb, you’d need probably $15-18 million per season for that guy as an FA as a starting point. The team who has the pitcher is holding around $30 million in excess value (FA price – arbitration salary average), so that’s what they want back, or close to it.
TJECK109
Maybe the Grandal signing was done to move Davis in a deal. Yes I know he can play RF but they have a ton on the roster that can play the OF
PiratesPundit51
The Grandal signing was the answer to the question “what happens if we lose Delay in Spring Training, then Sanchez goes down before the end of April?”
The previous answer to that question, prior to the signing, was Grant Koch. And that answer should scare you more than it probably does. Scared the Pirates enough to sign a 35-year-old catcher on the decline.
Scott Kliesen
A ton on the roster who can play OF?
Besides Reynolds and Suwinski, they have nothing but question marks. Olivares, Polacios, Davis, Cutch, Joe, and Bae shouldn’t give any Pirates fan much comfort there’s solid RF production.
Makes way more sense to sign Michael A Taylor to man CF and move Suwinski to RF. Trade Bae and demote Polacios to AAA for depth like Andujar was last year. And most importantly give Davis a chance to Catch 4-5 days per week to start year.
YourDreamGM
Davis can’t play rf. Might not be able to catch either. Pirates will be lucky to teach him to hit enough to make up for lack of defensive value.
wvsteve
If they do make a trade for Cabrera then believe they can be in a great position to sign another player like a Taylor or Merrifield for like around 5 mill
IndyNorm
That would be great and make the off season very successful for BC.
M.Kit
The NL Central could get really interesting if we see the Pirates make a jump like the Reds did, and if Cincinnati’s young stars are able to perform over a full season
BrianStrowman9
Giving away Cabrera for one of those infielders would be a mistake. There better be a comp balance pick and some further off minor leaguers.
Cabrera can at minimum be a very solid reliever. I don’t think anyone of those 3 infielders will ever be a starter on a playoff team.
But if that’s the Marlins asking price—-Elias need to give them a call and send Norby down to FL for Cabrera.
Robertowannabe1
Thinking one of the middle infielders is only a piece of what would be going back. The comp pick would not come tor 4 more years.
YourDreamGM
Peguero should be a fine 2b. Gonzales needs swing fixed or will k at high rate. Bae needs lots more work.
Top 20 at least probably top 15 prospect as well. Pirates have 15 guys who could make a top 100 list.
stretch123
Peguro and a mid level pitching prospect like (Barco, Wolf or Ashcraft) for Cabrera is fair for both sides.
YourDreamGM
Wolf is likely a lefty specialist. Marlins might think they can turn him into a starter but wouldn’t take him over any of the pirates dozen elite pitching prospects. His mlb prospect rating is fake.
Scott Kliesen
I’m thinking it’s going to take something like Peguero/Gonzales/Bae + Jared Jones/Brandon Ashcraft + an A ball lottery ticket bat to get Cabrera.
If Pirates really want to compete this year, they should pull the trigger.
YourDreamGM
Give them all 3. They will probably dfa Gonzales Bae. More likely then them becoming the starting 2b. Peguero could be and average or above. Pirates didn’t make him a starting ss though. And TJ will likely take his 2b job 2025.
PiratesPundit51
The first guy on the list is going to determine the second and third pieces. If it is either Gonzales or Bae, Jones is probably more likely than Ashcroft, and you’re probably no longer talking about a lottery ticket at the A-level, probably more like Chandler AND Jase Bowen. That package doesn’t look as appealing to the Pirates — giving up one of your few power prospects, and two-upper tier pitching prospects AND Bae/Gonzales. Would almost guarantee that’s closer to the Marlins’ ask, and I can’t blame them for that.
Big Smoke
Termarr Johnson, YOU are a Miami Marlin
User 4095290658
Bucs are dangling the other 2B players to open a path for Termarr – unless the Marlins are trading Eury Perez.
PiratesPundit51
If the Marlins are shopping in that price range in terms of return, and they’re looking to stay competitive, Adames makes more sense for the short term; asking for Termarr without getting someone who can play in the majors now would be punting on the season to some extent, and if they want both Peguero and Johnson, it’s too much for Garrett for sure, maybe even too much for Cabrera.
Long story short, I don’t see a path toward Pirates trading Termarr to Miami as the Marlins are not looking to trade Perez.
Big Smoke
A future SP1 is worth Termarr? Yeah, maybe in The Show with the trade sliders turned all the way to easy
User 4095290658
Nobody said Eury straight up for TJ. But if the Marlins wanted him included then the Bucs would be looking at Perez not Cabrera.
