Padres roster has more holes than Swiss cheese.
Longtimecoming
I like Swiss cheese.

“Developmental year”
Gwynning
I came for the chat, I’ll stay for a ham & Swiss sammich!
Brew’88
Cousin Vinny said that
Gwynning
That’s what I said, the 2 yoots!
jorge78
And higher ticket prices 3 years in a row…..
towinagain
Increase the ticket prices substantially.
Decrease payroll
= Profitability
Great for ownership but awful for the fan.
Gwynning
Let’s start here tow-ster,
in light of everything you know…
Should the Padres reset the CBT this year?
If you believe the answer is “yes” then please respond with how you wish to fill out the roster with (roughly) $21M. Now, and we’ve talked about this, that ($237M MAX PAYROLL) has to be the end-all, be-all number at the end of the year. In other words, you have to leave some room if you’re
A. Contending
&
B. Wish to add in season/at TDL
The Pads should qualify on both directives. So, your take is we look like Swiss cheese, fine, that’s your opinion. Tell us how you’d do it, if I hired you as the GM today.
If your answer is “no” well then, we all know you’d sign Belli and Snell and The Phanatic for Friday games and Randy Jones BBQ would be free 24/7… we can hear the fantasies already. I kindly remind you that it completely depends on the player as to where they sign. You didn’t like that the Pads passed on Rosario? How do you know what the Padres’ offer was? And just WHERE does Rosario play? Let us know, bro. Aloha!
towinagain
Getting tough there Gwynning.
I am not asking for much.
Voit at DH
One of Taylor or Duvall would have been fine in cf
Cron at 1st on a minor league deal
Profar in lf
Could have brought Davies in on a minor league deal.
All that saves the CBT.
But don’t get me wrong I’d love if Bellinger were here.
Honestly though, this team won’t be contending without some veteran additions.
So saving money for mid-season additions is a moot point.
towinagain
So here’s the thing, let’s all throw a big CBT party.
Raise a glass to the CBT, kick back and relax and come back in 25′.
Let Shildt do a little babysitting, take this year off gents and we will see each other in 25′.
I will say this don’t let anyone fool you, this team as its constructed won’t win a wildcard.
Gwynning
Yeah yeah, I didn’t expect to hear you change your tune… but I do like your hypothetical signings. They echo my sentiments, too. Offer M-Taylor 3yr/$15m (5 AAV)? I would opine that he’d heavily consider it. He would help the pitching and D the most. Voit is off the market (thank goodness) but Cron would be perfectly amenable. Davies wasn’t coming back; to my knowledge his “bitter” ex still lives in SD. Be thankful if you don’t know that whole story, just FYI. Which brings about my ultimate point- players decide where to sign, so simply saying “sign Michael Taylor!” doesn’t necessarily slice the bread, iykwim. Cheers amigo, here’s to better days ahead.
towinagain
If they aren’t choosing to sign with the Padres that is more concerning from an organizational standpoint.
Playing in beautiful SD at Petco with a still very talented nucleus should be a draw.
I’ll second that Gwynning and raise a toast to better days ahead!
Longtimecoming
Tow – a guy that grew up in the mid west or east coast most likely isn’t interested in SD or Petco as a home because it’s 2-3,000 miles away from family.
Not everyone feels the way you see things. These players are people too and they have their own personal preferences.
Like Gwynning said, Davies’ ex still lives in SD and that was public mess so he doesn’t want anywhere near there.
Just imagine every other player had their own reasons for liking or not.
It isn’t like a video game where you pick and they come.
I’ll stick with cooper or Votto for 1b / DH but I don’t know their story but I’d bet AJ has made contacted with all of these guys.
towinagain
‘Players are people too’ hahaha
Cute.
Jean Matrac
As nice and beautiful as SD is, players are still going to opt for the best deal in dollars and years.
towinagain
Which is exactly what is concerning about the Pads organizationally.
Are they spending the allotted 20 to 25 million?
Do players want to sign here but are being nudged elsewhere due to the Pads unwillingness to spend even 2 to 3 million?
Duran Daddy
steve adams…. like the old Grizzlies guy
drasco036
I love the responses “if he was willing to sign a one year deal, he would have done so already”… kind of in line with “he wants too much money”…
Look, these guys can want all the desire but the fact is at some point they will have to take the contract that makes the most sense. Maybe what makes the most sense for a guy is a one year deal, maybe it’s a three year deal with opt outs we don’t know. There is a personal aspect involved, these guys are humans with human emotions. One year on a contender may make more sense than 3 on White Sox. (See JD Martinez)
Jean Matrac
Steve was a little harsh on the Giants. He seemed to be saying that the Giants have needs and money so they should just go ahead and make a deal that has a good chance to become an albatross.

John Henry = Harry Frazee
I.M. Insane
The Boston A’s.
Fever Pitch Guy
Steve is fantastic, I love reading his chats. His response to the Devers question was right on the money!
sillywabbit
Anyone else happy when a player seems to be asking for a likely albatross contract gets the cold shoulder from market? To me, it’s a bonus that most of the big fish left are Boras clients.
showmebb
I have the Red Sox finishing just above the As and White Sox in the loss column this season. Gotta be the most disappointing team of this offseason.
