Astros right-hander Justin Verlander is a few weeks behind his normal Spring Training schedule due to a shoulder issue. He spoke to members of the media about it today, with Brian McTaggart of MLB.com relaying video on X of the veteran discussing the situation. General manager Dana Brown also relayed that righty J.P. France is dealing with shoulder inflammation, though Brown isn’t especially worried since both pitchers are playing catch. “If they were shut down, it would be more concerning,” Brown said, per Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle.
“I’m a little bit behind schedule right now, had a little hiccup early on that’s resolved itself but I have to be really cautious with how I’m building up,” Verlander said. “I guess my body doesn’t respond the same at 40 as it does at 25. So, you know, I’m a couple weeks behind.” When asked to elaborate on the hiccup, he continued: “When I first started playing catch, I usually shut it down for a while. This time, when I shut it down and picked the ball back up, my shoulder didn’t feel so great, so kind of had to take a step back and kind of just really be diligent about my buildup.” When asked about Opening Day, he said it would depend on how things go in the next few weeks.
It seems like the concern is fairly minor at this point, though it’s less than ideal for the club that a couple members of its rotation mix are already dealing with issues just as camp is opening. The Astros are already set to open the season with Lance McCullers Jr. and Luis García on the injured list, with both of those pitchers having undergone significant surgeries last year. Brown told MLB Network Radio earlier this week that those two guys are on track for returns in the second half, per Jon Morosi of MLB.com.
Without McCullers or García, Houston’s rotation mix would project to be Verlander, Framber Valdez, Cristian Javier and Hunter Brown, with one spot available for someone like France, José Urquidy or Brandon Bielak. If Verlander and/or France end up requiring a stint on the injured list to start the year, everyone would be moved up a peg or two on the chart.
Verlander, who turns 41 next week, also dealt with a shoulder issue last spring while with the Mets. At the end of March, he was placed on the IL with a teres major strain and didn’t make his season debut until May. He was ultimately able to make 27 starts on the year between the Mets and Astros after a midseason trade, but with diminished stuff from his 2022 Cy Young-winning year. His ERA went from 1.75 to 3.22 and his strikeout rate dropped from 27.8% to 21.5% with the velo on all his pitches slightly lower as well. He did seem to get better as the season went along, however, with a 3.60 ERA and 19.7% strikeout rate in the first half compared to a 2.92 ERA and 23% strikeout rate in the second.
France, 29 in April, tossed 136 1/3 innings last year with a 3.83 ERA, 17.4% strikeout rate, 8.1% walk rate and 42.8% ground ball rate. He’s obviously less essential to the club’s rotation than Verlander, not even guaranteed a roster spot since he has options. But every club has to deal with injuries and reach into their depth at some point during the year. He would have been a candidate to step up if Verlander needed to miss time but that could be in jeopardy if France is himself delayed.
Brown has frequently stated that he’s always looking to add pitching and made similar comments today, with video relayed by McTaggart. “I’m always in the business of trying to add starter depth. I think the season, like I said before, it’s 162 games. If you get a situation where you can trade for a starter or if you can sign a starter, I think you should do it if it makes sense budget wise and all that. But at the end of the day, I’m always in the market for pitching. I’ve said that since day one. I don’t think you can have enough pitching in 162 games.”
The Astros are in unprecedented territory in terms of their payroll. Per Cot’s Baseball Contracts, their highest Opening Day payroll was $188MM in 2021. Roster Resource pegs them at $240MM for this year and also has their competitive balance tax figure at $255MM. They have never paid the tax before, as they only time they went over was in 2020, when the payments were waived in the shortened season. This year’s line is $237MM, so they’re already well over.
If the club decides they need reinforcements, there are plenty of names still available in free agency. That includes marquee guys like Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery but also more affordable names like Michael Lorenzen, Hyun Jin Ryu and many more. Given the club’s payroll and the minor nature of the injuries, it doesn’t seem likely that the club will suddenly go out and splurge, but it will be a situation worth monitoring if another pitcher suffers an injury or a setback is suffered by Verlander or France. Despite Brown’s assertion that he’s always looking for starting depth, they haven’t signed any veterans to minor league deals so could perhaps look to add some non-roster guys in the coming days.
vtadave
At least the Mets are only on the hook for $25 million for Verlander this year.
metsgolf
Yeah, so?
BaseballisLife
At least he is not taking up a roster spot while not being able to pitch for the Mets this year.
Metsman22
This Mets fan hopes that JB only pitches 139 regular season innings this year.

Breaking news: Justin Verlander is human. Dude will be 41 next week. Lot of mileage on that arm. Great mileage. HOF mileage. But Father Time is not forgiving. Not saying he’s done, but Houston needs a Plan B.
Beff Jagwell
@nukeg they need to be smart and sign Bauer.
@metsgolf and @BaseballisLife why are y’all being so sensitive? Poster was just saying at least Houston isn’t on the hook for all of his salary. Y’all are acting like he was trashing your favorite team.
Astrosfn1979
After being a fan for 45 years signing Bauer would chase me away.
Not only is he not worthy of being called human, but he was trashing the Astros Long before any of his perversions and disgusting actions were exposed.
The combination is simply too much.
BaseballisLife
Sensitive? I am stating a fact. Any player that can pitch is better than someone on the IL. At least he is not taking up a roster spot at $43 million for the Mets.
Tippin 44s
This will be the catalyst for the Astros to sign Mike Clevinger.
acoss13
Verlander isn’t getting any younger, so yes I agree Clevinger is definitely on the table. He’s not going to be expensive and I watched him with the White Sox, he’s going to be much better with a better team, better defense behind him, and the Astros will provide both.
Beff Jagwell
I’d rather Bauer, but either one is fine. Houston rotation is 80% injured right now.
Tippin 44s
I’d rather, T. Bauer, B. Snell, & J. Montgomery lol. Was trying to be realistic with their payroll already in uncharted waters though. So I like both M. Clevinger & H. Jin Ryu out of the “cheaper” options.
goastros123
Pass on Bauer and Clevinger, but all in on Snell and maybe Montgomery.
LordD99
The Astros are in expected territory with a late-stage contending club. Older players begin to break down while payroll escalates. I think they realize they may have only one more chance with this core, hence why they went big on Hader in an attempt to maximize 2024.
astros_fan_84
Pundits have been saying the window is closing for years. Obviously, it eventually will.
However, the Astros sold 20k season tickets and the payroll is higher than ever. As long as the team has money and avoids albatross contracts, it will always have resources to contend.
Plus, the astros “weak” farm continually churns out useful players. I’m unconcerned especially since the Athletics, Mariners, and Angels beat themselves. The Rangers are an elite team, but they’re likely to have a hangover.
AirY0rdan
Just putting it out there that people have said many times over the Astros run that “the window will close”, they said it when Cole left for Free Agency, they said it when Correa left, and when Springer left. That has taught me to never doubt the Astros ability, I don’t care if they don’t have any “elite” prospects, was Yordan supposed to be a elite prospect, what about Framber, Javier, Pena and Yainer. Every year you see more surprises in their minor league system.
Old York
Astros will get desperate and sign Snell.
swagsuperawesomeepiccoolman123
and then the yankees will win the world series
Old York
@swagsuperawesomeepiccoolman123
Good luck with that. Management has no plans for that.
nukeg
Of poker?
Beff Jagwell
Hahahaha the Yankees may not even make the playoffs.
AirY0rdan
“May not” more like “Will not”, even if they do we will just kick them out again for the umpteenth time
Beff Jagwell
@Old York I hope not. Snell is vastly overrated and whomever signs him will regret that contract by the end of this season, and then be stuck for another 5-6 years.
User 2161944466
This will be an issue all year. That team is headed for a rebuild and baseball is better for it
Beff Jagwell
How so? Because YOU don’t like them? You should cry about it a little more.
Unclenolanrules
Astros live rent free in so many fans heads
Beff Jagwell
@Unclenolanrules can you imagine how sensitive and fragile those people are? That a sports team can trigger them so easily and for so long. I feel bad for their families, because you KNOW they are miserable to be around.
AirY0rdan
I’ve found the common thread between these kinds of people, they’re jealous Yankees/ AL West Team fan’s who are jealous their team can;t win the same way the Astros are able to. So give 1 guess what they do…
They blame a fair championship in 2022 on a cheating scandal in 2017, makes aloot of sense…
Unclenolanrules
Rebuild? Pay attention. They’re signing people, not trading them.
Tippin 44s
Every….single…..year we hear “The Astros window is closing.” After 2020 when they were under .500 during covidball & had lost Cole previously in FA & Springer after. Again after 2021 when they lost the WS, with Verlander & McCullers injured, & lost Correa & Greinke to FA. After 2022 when the won the WS & Verlander left in FA (The same Ace that is to old when here, was a huge loss when not here.) While McCullers was STILL injured. Now again after 2023 making it back to the 7th straight ALCS losing in a razor close 7 game series to the eventual WS Champs, we hear it again.
Even though most evidence points to a very strong roster over the next 3 years 2024-2026. Altuve under contract over that span & is still bashing over .900 OPS, was a freak injury hit by a ball that injured him. Alvarez the BEST overall hitter in MLB under contract over that time.
Tucker currently under contract for 2 of the 3 years & maybe more, Bregman 1 of the 3 but maybe more if not then that will free up 50 million between the 2 of them for a team that will spend it & replace them. Pena under contract the full time. Valdez 2/3 years, Javier the full time, Pressly 2/3 years, B. Abreu 3/3, Hader 3/3, Verlander 2/3, McCullers 3/3, H. Brown 3/3, Y. Diaz 3/3, McCormick 3/3.
Thus run is FAR from over even after 3 years may just need a little reset then to assess the roster & if Tucker, Valdez, & Bregman are still here & whether or not Altuve is still playing at a high level. But as mentioned with a team running a 255 million dollar payroll right now, that owns its RSN & is going to negotiate with MLB for big $$$ next season when MLB wants to have all streaming rights (or most) under an umbrella, & just produced the franchise’s record for most earned revenue ever in 2023. I think it’s safe to say they will spend to replace players as needed.
Not to even mention the fact that this team has been THIS dominant while not having 1st or 2nd round picks to develop & turn into big leaguers by call-ups or trade, over the 2020 & 2021 draft that hurt the farm system. Yet STILL finds gems left & right & keeps the machine turning over no matter what. Kuechel, Morton, Cole, Greinke, Brantley, Correa, Springer, Osuna all left & team replaced through farm system or FA/trades & didnt miss a beat. Now Neris, Maton, Stanek all gone signed Hader in FA, call up Whitley & give Blanco & Bielak bigger roles.
The last thing to point out that non-Astros fans will see, & I TRULY mean this as someone who watches/studies each & every game, reads & absorbs anything Baseball especially Astros related, spend hours & hours on Fangraphs, MLBTR, Baseball ref, MLB.COM/Baseball Savant, etc. Losing Dusty Baker & promoting Joe Espada is worth 5+ wins. Astros easily win 95 games last year without Baker. He is a TERRIBLE manager at this stage/age of his career. The game has more than passed him by, he was OK in the 2022 play-offs, other than that he was terrible for all purposes besides good PR.
He kept Chas on the bench for Straw, so Click traded Straw specifically to get Chas playing time he stated it, Baker starts Meyers. Meyers gets injured & Chas is sole CF on roster so Click calls up Siri for depth…..Baker starts Siri. So click trades Siri & finally bake makes Chas the part time starter with Meyers. Meyers struggles to start the year Chas is awesome, Meyers gets sent down to AAA….Baker still doesn’t let Chas & his .900 OPS at the time with GG defense be the sole CF he then splits time with Mauricio freaking Dubon. This is just 1 tiny specific example of Bakers ignorance & stubbornness. This team will be much better with him gone.
With a good FO, core players already locked up (Yordan, Altuve, Javier, Hader, Chas, Diaz, etc), an owner that spends, & having literally the best hitter in all of MLB, the Astros window as WS contenders is open for at least 3 more years, & as playoff contenders probably the next 6-8 years still. Every year we hear “it’s ending, Astros won’t be good next year.” Yet every year always ends up the same……in the ALCS seeing if we can make another WS.
178iq
Without a steady & ready amount of HGH and stem cells- it’s going to be really hard for Verlander to get back this season. They are watching him (and a few others) like a hawk… random testing etc… But not the billion dollar man, he didn’t get tested once and is already taking MASSIVE bp swings. SO is mashing the ball fresh off TJ surgery hmmmmmm lmao
Beff Jagwell
He’s the current money-maker for MLB. You notice they rarely try to pimp Trout anymore, right? He failed to be their “face of baseball,” so they’ve been trying to pick someone new every year. They’ve hit pay dirt with SO and will do anything possible to protect his image and his ability to make them money.
Stallion97
Only an Astros homer would think Verlander is the face of baseball right now. It’s clearly Ohtani.
Tippin 44s
@Stallion97 are you such an Astros hater that you can’t even read & comprehend sentences about them without hallucinating? He didn’t say ANYTHING about Verlander, you mentioned him WTF? He said “They have been trying to pick a new face of MLB every year. They’ve hit pay dirt with SO, & will do anything to protect his image.”
They= MLB
SO= Shohei Ohtani NOT Justin Verlander.
Beff Jagwell
Too ignorant for reading comprehension. He got so huffy-puffy at the thought of the Astros that his minuscule mind blacked out.
Silver Boot Series Enjoyer
Still sore from that ALCS, huh?
jjd002
He’s got two rings.
Beff Jagwell
@jjdoo2 contact and reason with Rangers fans. They are on a high right now and they are acting like a high school girl with her first beer. There is a better chance that they miss the playoffs this year, then to repeat as champions; but you can’t tell them that.
frankiegxiii
Haha looks like deGrom struck a nerve.
AirY0rdan
Degrom is as fragile as crumble cake…
AirY0rdan
Still sore from the 6 AL West titles we’ve won in the last 7 years, huh?
Niekro floater
Yikes ! Never good especially for grandpa pitcher w/zillion innings on that arm.
